Georgia Edwards

Funeral services for Georgia Edwards, 93, of Fort Worth, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. A.J. Hatfield officiating. Burial will follow in Jake Ford Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at New Zion Bethel Baptist Church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Edwards died Jan. 26, 2003, at Emery J. Lilge Hospice House in Burleson. She was born April 10, 1909, in Wharton to Andrew and Georgia Hill Sanders.

Survivors include sons, Richard Edwards and Harold Edwards, both of Los Angeles, Calif., Curtis Edwards of Wharton and Rev. George Edwards of Fort Worth; daughters, Joyce Mitchell of Wharton, Delores Edwards of Arlington, Lula Lynch of Fort Worth, Merle Edwards of Wichita Falls and June Faye Sanford of Fort Worth; 18 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.

Lydia Kubena

Funeral services for Lydia Ann Kubena, 82, of East Bernard, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Rev. Don Ruppert officiating. Entombment will follow at Holy Cross Mausoleum in East Bernard. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. A rosary will be held at 7:30 p.m. today.

Mrs. Kubena died Jan. 27, 2003, in Houston. She was born Nov. 10, 1920, in East Bernard to Fred Fojtik and Albina Kubena Fojtik.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters of the Americas, Altar Society and the SPJST. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Kubena, and her parents, Fred and Albina Fojtik.

Survivors include children and their spouses, Joan and Lehnert Miculka of Florence, Patricia and Jerry Kolacny of Houston and Dennis Kubena and his wife, Terri Musgrove, of Simonton; a brother, several sisters, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and many other relatives also survive.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wharton County Public Library, The East Bernard Branch.

Grace Lingo

Funeral services for Grace Elizabeth Lingo, six-weeks-old, of Needville, were held Monday at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia with Rev. Jerl Watkins officiating. Burial followed in Sweeny Cemetery.

Grace died Jan. 24, 2003, in Needville. She was born Dec. 9, 2002, in Houston to James and Tia Lingo Jr. of Needville.

Survivors include parents, James and Tia Lingo Jr. of Needville; grandparents, James and Carol Lingo Sr. of Boling, Buck and Lisa Wenglar of East Bernard and Sandra and Byron Richards of Groveton; great-grandparents, Joe and Ruby Lingo of Sweeny, J.C. and Isabel Koudela of Hillje, Mrs. Ernest Wenglar of El Campo and Bruce and Nadine Latimer of Santa Fe; aunts and uncles, Nicole Lingo of Boling, Tara and Tiffany Wenglar of East Bernard and Ty Wenglar and wife Dezda of Katy; and cousins, Zohe and Vivian Wenglar of Katy.

Pallbearers were Russ Farrel, Price Phillips, Sean Wenglar and Ty Wenglar.

Honorary pallbearers were Cole Applegate, Lee Cherry, Cheyenne Hearing and Neal Wood.

Emma Moore

Funeral services for Emma Lee Moore, 69, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall with elder James Goynes officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation is from 6-9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Moore died Jan. 22, 2003, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in Houston. She was born Aug. 31, 1933, in Wharton to Monroe and Rebecca Stephens Phillips.

Survivors include husband, Sylvester Moore of Wharton; son, Michael Moore of Los Angeles, Calif.; daughters, Virginia Lee Pervis of Wharton and Debra Kay Brown of Houston; brother, Daniel Phillips of Wharton; sisters, Ida Fisher and Louvina Brown, both of Wharton, Lillian Williams and Nellie Gordon, both of Houston; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lucy Peterman

Funeral services for Lucy Mae Peterman, 79, of Hungerford, were held Sunday at Seven Star Baptist Church with Dr. R.I. Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Bowden Cemetery.

Mrs. Peterman died Jan. 23, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Sept. 28, 1923, in Sylvester to Johnnie and Florence Steward Young.

She worked as a nurse’s aide and was Baptist by faith.

Survivors include step-daughters, Helen Livings of Lafayette, La., and Margaret Peterman of Phoenix, Ariz.; step-son, Charles Sayles of Texas City; and one grandchild.

Mary Fisher

Funeral services for Mary Fisher, 80, of Wharton, will he held 11 a.m. Saturday at Mt. Scilla Baptist Church with Rev. C. Spradley officiating. Burial will follow in Roberts Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Fisher died April 6, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born Aug. 22, 1922, in Wharton to Weldon and Ella Brown Roberts.

Survivors include sons, Robert Lee Fisher of Wharton and Rev. Leroy Fisher of Houston; daughters, Ollie Jackson and Ella Mac Evans, both of Wharton; 26 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren with a host of other relatives and friends.

Glen Brod

Funeral services for Glen Edward Brod, 49, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A wake service was held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home with Tim Duyka officiating.

Mr. Brod died late July 30, 2003, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born on Aug. 23, 1953, in Wharton, the son of Bennie Frank Brod and the late Helen Bernadette Kutach Brod.
He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Mr. Brod was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Hurley Council No. 3262 in Wharton. He was a quality control manager at Safoco for the past 10 years. Mr. Brod worked with Babe Ruth Baseball in Wharton and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a veteran of the Vietname War having served in the U.S. Army in Germany. Mr. Brod married Elaine Georgie Kveton on Feb. 28, 1981, in Wallis. He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen Bernadette Kutach Brod in 1993.
Survivors include his wife, Elaine Brod of Wharton; daughter, Kristi Lynn Brod of Wharton; son, Chris Brod of Wharton; father and step-mother, Bennie and Annie Mae Brod of Cape Carancahua; sister, Cynthia Ann Guillot of Caldwell; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Honorary Pallbearers are his fellow co-workers, friends, neighbors and members of the Knights of Columbus in Wharton.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 3262, P.O. Box 1155, Wharton, Texas 77488; or Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral services for Marjorie L. Green, 70, of Wharton, are pending at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home.

Freddie Jenkins

Funeral services for Freddie L. Jenkins, 50, of Wharton, will be held 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. T.J. Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.

Mr. Jenkins died July 26, 2003, at his home. He was born July 26, 1949, in Wharton to Fred and Hazel Lee Samuel Jenkins.

Survivors include his mother, Hazel Lee Jenkins of Wharton; twins, Vernice Ray Jackson and Eddie L, Jenkins, both of Wharton; sister, Netha Lee Gardner of Houston; and two grandchildren.

Jessie Johnson

Funeral services for Jessie Mae Sonnenberg Johnson, 75, of Bay City, were held Friday at First United Methodist Church in Bay City with Rev. Kay Johnson and Rev. Kevin Young officiating. Burial followed in Cedarvale Cemetery.

Mrs. Johnson died July 29, 2003, at Avalon Personal Care in Houston. She was born Aug. 17, 1927, in Columbus to the late Otto and Jessie Mae Schroeder Sonnenberg.

She was reared in Wharton and graduated from Wharton High School in 1947. Mrs. Johnson worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company beginning in the 1950s as a switchboard operator and retired from the business office in 1982. She then worked in the office of McAllister Junior High School in Bay City for 17 years and retired in May of 2000. Mrs. Johnson was a member of First United Methodist Church in Bay City and taught the 3-4 year old class in Sunday School from 1964 until 2000. She was a former Girl Scout and later a troop leader and co-leader as an adult. Mrs. Johnson played the trombone in college and in the community band.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Becky Shane and Tom Lyons of Fulshear; one granddaughter, sisters-in-law, Mildred Johnson Mengerelli of LaPorte, Kay Johnson Poe of Houston and Beth Sonnenberg of Odessa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Harold Barton Johnson in 1988 and by her son Jeffrey Barton Johnson in 1978.

Memorials may be made to the Fulshear First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 100, Fulshear, Texas 77441; or the Alzheimer’s Association, 11251 Southwest Freeway, Houston, Texas 77092.

Addie Keton

Following cremation, memorial services for Addie Mae Keton, 96, of Wharton, will be held at 7 p.m.
Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. Private graveside service will be held on Monday in West.

Edmundo Sanchez

Edmundo Montelongo Sanchez, age 79, of Houston died Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, in a Houston hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Oct. 29, 1923, in Matagorda, the son of the late Manuel Sanchez and Jacinta Montelongo Sanchez.

Mr. Sanchez was a former resident of Boling and worked at Texasgulf Sulfur from 1947 until 1954. He worked as a policeman with the Harlingen Police Department from 1954 until 1955 when he moved to Houston. Mr. Sanchez was employed as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years until his retirement in 1983. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army and was a member of the “Dirty Dozen.” Mr. Sanchez married Germana Bermudez on March 9, 1942, in Goliad. He was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church in Houston and the Knights of Columbus Council No. 3910. He was also a member of the VFW.

A rosary was recited Tuesday evening at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2003 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military graveside honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Germana Sanchez of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Edulia and Vidal Rubio of Needville; sons and daughter-in-law, Juan Manuel Sanchez of Houston and John Anthony and Jeannine Sanchez of Holly Springs, N.C.; sisters, Santos Suaste and Angela Sepeda, both of Wharton, Lucia San Miguel of Manvel and Genoveva Torres of Missouri City; brothers, Isiderio Sanchez of Decatur, Ga., Manuel B. “Ben” Torres of Missouri City, Genaro Torres of Rosharon and Astolfo Torres of Corpus Christi; grandchildren, Miguel, Christina, Elena and Lianna Sanchez.

Pallbearers were Isiderio Sanchez, Manuel B. “Ben” Torres, Genaro Torres, Manuel Bermudez, Raymond Cantu, Luis San Miguel and Vidal Rubio.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Callie Shorter

Funeral services for Callie Shorter, 80, of Wharton, are pending at Matthews Funeral Home.
Ms. Shorter died Oct. 3, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

James Coats

Funeral services for James W. Coats, 74, of Edna, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at Baptist Temple Church in Edna with Rev. Danny Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Edna.

Mr. Coats died April 7, 2004, in Edna. He was born Jan. 12, 1930, in Angleton to the late Samuel and Lila Fay Skeeters Coats.

He was a retired industrial mechanic from Gulf State Tube, and was a member of Baptist Temple Church in Edna. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Beryl Coats. He married Eva Swinea Ferguson of Edna on Oct. 23, 1993, in Edna. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Norma Mae Barrett.

Survivors include wife, Eva Coats of Edna; daughters, Susan Behan of Sharon, Ontario, Canada, Carol Baldwin of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Sandy Bryant of Edna; sons, Clayton J. Coats of Wharton, Duncan J. Coats of Clear Lake and Darrell Ferguson of Edna; sisters, Josie L. Jones of Cypress, Sammie Fay Mooney of Houston and Catherine Ann Spann of Tomball; brother, Homer Lee Coats; 11 grandchildren, one grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
