Annie Donaldson

Annie Marie Elms Donaldson, age 88, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, in Wharton. She was born in Stuart, Okla., to Albert Lee and Rebecca Ann Estes Elms on Sept. 11, 1916. Mrs. Donaldson attended the Stuart Church of Christ where she was baptized and began her lifelong walk with the Lord. Graduating from Stuart High School, she was presented with the American Legion Award and was named salutatorian of her class.

She married Elzie Loyd Donaldson on May 8, 1937, beginning a wonderful marriage that would continue almost 60 years. Making their home in McAlester, Okla., the couple had three children: Gerald, Patty and Vicky. In 1954, they left a family-owned business in retail grocery sales to move to Boling and purchase a farm.

The change from urban to rural environment brought many opportunities, challenges and joys to Mrs. Donaldson. It was there that her beloved husband saw her blossom as beautifully as all the seasonal flowers she loved growing near their home. It was there her children witnessed their mother living completely the life described in the Old Testament, Proverbs 31. Her dear husband’s “full confidence in her” made Marie his true partner in everything they worked so hard to accomplish together. One small farm became three!
She worked tireless hours with “eager hands” growing every vegetable that went on her family’s table and those of many friends and relatives. The freezers were always overflowing, and the pantry was always filled with delicious canned foods and freshly baked desserts, evidence that “she set about her work vigorously, her arms strong for her task.”

This godly woman “saw that her trading was profitable” gathering yearly pecan crops and selling them, producing pounds of butter weekly and selling it.

“She opened her arms to the poor” — no worker ever started to the fields without breakfast or finished his work on the Donaldson soil without a wholesome home-cooked lunch.

“She extended her hands to the needy.” Whether teaching a Bible School Class or serving as a 4-H Adult Leader or doing her part in the PTO, Mrs. Donaldson had a special passion for helping kids, her and those of others, to become more than they thought they could be.

How she could sew! Whether with a machine or with her quick fingers, garments and their enhancements were made in duplicate for two daughters who were dressed just alike — “for all of them are clothed in scarlet.”

“Her husband takes his seat among the elders”— she was the wife, and more, the true help-mate of one serving for many years as an elder in the church.

“She is clothed with strength,” a woman who though left an orphan at eight years old, still learned to know everything about nutrition, gardening, hosting, sewing and household management. One who helped produce perfect cotton bolls, watched as rain destroyed them, and then planted yet again the next year. One who battled loneliness and cancer when her beloved husband was no longer there to comfort her. One who by enduring and never giving up taught her children that strength comes not in what we do, but in what God can do through us.

“A wife of noble character who can find? Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her.” Marie — beloved wife, mother, grandmother. We are so thankful she was ours.

Survivors include son, Gerald Donaldson and wife Billie of Wharton; daughter, Patty and husband Jerry of Friendswood; daughter, Vicky and husband Harvey of Houston; granddaughter Melanie Lambert and husband David of Charlottesville, Va.; granddaughter, Lilya Edwards and husband Derek of Augusta, Ga.; grandson, John Donaldson and wife Elise of College Station; granddaughter, Laura Matheidas and husband Michael of Yokohama, Japan; granddaughter, Angela Penny and husband John of Clear Lake; granddaughter, Meredith Savage of Friendswood; great-grandchildren, David and Melanie Matheidas, Madison and Lauren Edwards, and Melody, Olivia and Karis Donaldson.
