Wayne Moses

Funeral services were held Tuesday for Wayne Lee “Pop” Moses, age 63, in Slaton at First Baptist Church. He was buried in Englewood Cemetery in Slaton.
Mr. Moses died Oct. 12, 2002, in Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond. He was born Nov. 25, 1938, in Chaulk Bluff.

He graduated from Mission High School in 1957. Mr. Moses attended Texas Tech University and Texas A&I. He married Pat Runnels on Feb. 24, 1962, in Brownfield. They moved to Slaton in 1966 from Lone Star. He was gin manager for Farmers Gin in Slaton, Moses Gin in Gordon, Beasley Gin in Beasley and Tavener Community Gin since 1988 in East Bernard. Mr. Moses was a former member of the U.S. Marine Corps, member of the Texas Cotton Ginners Association, Texas Independent Cotton Ginners Association, past member of the Slaton Volunteer Fire Department. He was involved for 13 years as a coach or president of Slaton Little League, Eagle Lake Golf Association, an active supporter of the Slaton Tiger Tigerette Athletic Booster Club and a member of First Baptist Church of Slaton.

Survivors include: wife, Pat Moses of Slaton; sons, Troy Moses of Ransom Canyon and Nathan Moses of Levelland; sisters: Peggy Leitzel of Grantz, Pa., Lois Marie Hook of Belleville, Mich., Betty Ann Kirkland of Waco; and two grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to First Baptist Church, 619 Fitzgerald, East Bernard, Texas 77435; East Bernard Athletic Booster Club, P.O. Box 577, East Bernard, Texas 77435; or the Eagle Lake Gold Association, 201 Golf Course Road, Eagle Lake, Texas 77434.

Jessie Pinkney

Jessie Mae Bowers Pinkney was the firstborn child of Newton Amos and Martha Jane Bowers. She was born in Wharton County on Aug. 25, 1903, and transcended this life Oct. 14, 2002.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Mount Olive Baptist Church in Mackay with Rev. Jimmy Wright officiating. Burial will follow in New Mount Olive Cemetery.

During her early years, Mrs. Pinkney worked very hard on the land but still found time to further her education. She graduated from the University of Houston, which was also called the Houston College for Negroes and received her bachelor of science degree June 1945. Later she attended Texas Southern University and Wyler College where she completed her masters of science degree.

Mrs. Pinkney taught home economics and political science at the T.L. Pink School and in the Wharton, Boling and El Campo Independent School Districts.

She still found time to be a devoted member of New Mount Olive Baptist Church, serving as secretary of the church and as a devoted missionary. Devoting all of her years to the care of her family, church and community, she placed the education of many very dear to her heart.

On July 30, 1966, Jessie married Guy Pinkney. They shaped the world around them as they continued their blessed and happy lives together. Her finest service and greatest commitment was to God and her family. She was an inspiration to many and a role model for those who loved her.

She received an award from the Wharton-Fort Bend NAACP on March 25, 1986, for Outstanding Contribution to Education. She also received many other awards and tributes for the countless, selfless, sacrifices she made for those who knew her.

In 1993, Jessie moved to Austin to live with her niece and nephew, Rev. Leroy and Harriett Jones, and her great-nieces and nephew, Scotty Jones, now a senior at the University of Vermont, Cecily Jones, now a sophomore at the University of Colorado, and Jordan Simone Bailey, now a third grader in Houston. In Austin, Jessie began another life, but continued to be a strong and loving family member. There she made many new friends in the local church and community.

Later, as her health began to fail, she went to live at the Gracy Woods Assisted Living Center, where her uplifting spirit soon motivated the workers and cohabitants of the facility to crown her the Queen of Gracy Woods. She greatly enjoyed her final years there and lived a very active life participating in church, parties, field trips, cooking and many other activities.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Newton and Martha; two sisters, Ruby and Tillie; three brothers, Alvin, Marvin and Newton Jr.; and her loving husband. She is survived by many, many, many, many relatives and friends as well as a loving and devoted canine companion Chaka.

Mary Salazar

Mary Salazar, age 71, of Wharton died Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 27, 1931, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Roman Rodriguez and Vivian Ruiz Rodriguez.

Mrs. Salazar was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She married Guadalupe Salazar Sr. on Jan. 24, 1955, in Wharton. He preceded her in death on Feb. 16, 2001. Mrs. Salazar worked as a custodian at Wharton High School for 12 years prior to retiring in 1989.

A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Nympha and Moses Moctezuma of Wharton and Margaret Monroy of Rosenberg; sons, Lupe Salazar, of Wharton, and Ernest Salazar of Orlando, Fla.; brothers, Fernando Rodriguez of Wharton, Roman Rodriguez Jr. of Wharton and Jesse Rodriguez of Snyder; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were John Gomez, Nicklos Gomez, Jose Guzman, Moses Moctezuma Jr., Romero Garcia and Moses Moctezuma Sr.

Elida Salinas

Funeral services for Elida Salinas, 64, of Boling, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarvale Cemetery in Bay City. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home. Friends may call after noon on Sunday.

Mrs. Salinas died Oct. 17, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born April 27, 1938 in Newgulf, the daughter of Placido Chavez and Higinia Alvarado Chavez.

She was a former resident of Newgulf before moving to Boling in 1934. She was a homemaker and Catholic by faith.

Survivors include her husband Eliseo Salinas of Mexico; sisters, Diane Pena, Lucy Garcia and Mary Garcia, all of Palacios, Beatrice Gomez and Ester Chavez, both of Boling; brothers, Alfonso Chavez of Bay City, Ralph Chavez of Wharton and Roy Chavez of Boling; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by a sister, Isabel Salazar and brothers, Jacinto Chavez, Placido Chavez Jr., Richard Chavez and Rudy Chavez.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the charity of personal choice.

Juan Garcia

Funeral services for Juan L. Garcia, 54, of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors provided by Wharton American Legion Post No. 87. Rosary services were held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Garcia died Dec. 15, 2002 at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 11, 1948, in Wharton, the son of the late Antonio Bernal Sr. and Herminia Garcia Bernal.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Mr. Garcia was a 1968 graduate of Wharton High School and was a former student at Wharton County Junior College. He was a veteran of the Vietname War having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Garcia also served in the U.S. Army Reserve and the Army National Guard. He married Juanita I. Garza on June 28, 1997, in Wharton. Mr. Garcia was a member of the National Rifle Association and his favorite pastime was cooking and playing pool.

Survivors include his wife, Juanita Garcia of Wharton; daughters, Abby Rosalez of Houston and Diana Lynn Garcia of Wharton; sons, Gilbert Solis of Houston, Efrain Escobedo of Santa Rosa and Jaime Solis of Donna; sisters, Rebecca Cruz of Wharton and Melva Sampayo of Rosenberg; brothers, Agapito Bernal of San Antonio and Anton Bernal Jr. of Baytown; and 22 grandchildren also survive.

Walter Hoehn

Walter Hoehn, 91, of East Bernard, died Dec. 15, 2002, in Wharton. He was born in New York City and was reared and attended school in Nyack, N.Y.

On July 8, 1967, Mr. Hoehn was united in marriage to the former Marian Rose in Clarkstown, N.Y.
He worked for Ford Motor Company as a salesman. Mr. Hoehn was a member of the Nyack Volunteer Fire Department, serving as fire chief, the Nyack Lions Club and was an elder at the Presbyterian Church in Clarkstown, N.Y.

He is survived by his wife, Marian Hoehn of East Bernard; daughter, Dorothy Hopper of Bloomingburg, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law, Warren L. and Margie Hoehn of East Bernard; three grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Funeral services are under the direction of Knesek & Sons Funeral Home in Wallis.

I.J. Irvin

I.J. Irvin Jr., 83, a Glen Flora native and a leading citizen of Wharton County, died of cancer on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2002, at the home in which he was born on Sept. 13, 1919. His mother was Nellie Parr nee Hood and his father was I.J. Irvin Sr., both of Glen Flora.
Completing Wharton High School, Mr. Irvin attended Texas A&M University from 1936 to 1940 finishing his undergraduate work at the University of Maryland following World War II. He attended graduate school at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa.

A veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he volunteered in the U.S. Army in 1941, retiring as a colonel with more than 33 years of service. He was a graduate of the Army War College.

Returning to Glen Flora, Mr. Irvin became engaged in the real estate business and was active in community affairs. He served for five years as executive director of the Wharton Chamber of Commerce and then as the elected Wharton County Judge for 10 years.

Mr. Irvin was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton. He served the church as a senior warden, Sunday School teacher, Altar Guild, Bible teacher and a member of the Blue Aprons. He was also a member of the American Legion, the Lions Club, Wharton Masonic Lodge No. 621 AF&AM, the Association of Former Students of Texas A&M University and the 12th Man Foundation.

He served on the Houston-Galveston Area Council, Southeast Texas Housing Finance Corporation, Wharton County Central Appraisal District, WISD Board of Trustees and Wharton County Industrial Development Corporation.

As executive Director of the Wharton Chamber of Commerce, he was instrumental in locating NanYa Plastics and J & M Manufacturing in Wharton County and made several trips to the corporate headquarters in Taipei, Taiwan.

He helped establish Riceland Regional Mental Health Authority in Wharton County. Under his guidance, Wharton County became part of the National Flood Insurance program and developed a Federal Emergency Management (FEMA) plan. He introduced and chartered Wharton County Crime Stoppers, Inc. Working with the Johnson Foundation and local citizens, Mr. Irvin was successful in securing a site for a vastly enlarged Wharton County Museum, capable of being expanded as time goes on.

As county judge, he successfully led opposition to a hazardous and toxic waste site in the Boling salt dome. Through his efforts and with the help of others, Wharton County now has a Veterans Memorial dedicated to those from the county who gave so much in WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam and Lebanon for the freedom of our country.

Memorial services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton. Rev. Carl Shannon officiated with Rev. Hoss Gwin assisting. Several members of the family also participated in the service as well.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Irvin, whom he married in San Antonio on Sept. 28, 1989, of Glen Flora; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Raymond Smith of Drayden, Md., Kaye Ellen and John Connor of Columbus, Ind., and Candice and Dr. H.L. Whitley of Goldsboro, N.C.; step-children, Chuck and Becky Eastwood of San Antonio, Chris Eastwood of Glen Flora and V.J. Eastwood of Austin; sister and brother-in-law Betty Parr and E.C. Muegge of Glen Flora; sister-in-law, Kip Wooldridge of San Antonio; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. A sister, Ellen Hood Eldridge, preceded him in death.

Honorary pallbearers were Lawrence Brock, Bob Brooke, Dr. Bob Caraway Raymond Harrison, Chuck Merritt, C.E. Muegge, E.C. Muegge, Dr. Charles Norton, Travis Smith, Marcial Sorrel, Bob VonDerAu, Curtis Wilkins, Dr. C.E. Woodson and Dr. John T. Wynn.

Memorials may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal School, 207 Bob-O-Link, Wharton, Texas 77448; American Cancer Society of Wharton County, 204 2nd Street, Wharton, Texas 77488; Hospice of El Campo, 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437; or the charity of personal choice.

Pablo Martinez

Pablo “Paul” Martinez, 70, of Kenner, La., died Dec. 11, 2002. He was born Jan. 25, 1932, in Pharr.
Mr. Martinez had lived in Kenner, La., for the past 33 years. He was an operating engineer at Dixie Brewery and retired operating engineer at Loyola University. Mr. Martinez married Manuela Vasquez Martinez and to the couple was born a son, Pablo Martinez Jr. He was preceded in death by his first wife and son. Mr. Martinez then married the former Otilia Longoria.

Funeral services for Mr. Martinez were held Friday in Kenner, La.

Survivors include his wife, Otilia Longoria Martinez; sons, Joe “Chito” Martinez of El Campo, Pablo Martinez Jr. of El Campo, Lionel Martinez and Steven Martinez, both of Kenner, La., John Paul Martinez and Wilfred Martinez, both of Houston; daughters, Maria Martinez and Elizabeth
Martinez, both of Houston, and Melba M. Thompkin of Kenner, La.; brothers, Felix Martinez of Bay City, Lalo Rodriguez, Leo Bazaluda and Chavelo Bazaluda, all of California; sister, Olga Martinez of California;12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grand-children. Besides his first wife and child, Mr. Martinez was also preceded in death by his brother, Ernest Bazaluda and grandson Larry Martinez Sr.

Pallbearers were Joe “Chito” Martinez Sr. and Pablo Martinez Jr., both of El Campo, Lionel Martinez, Steven Martinez, Darren Thompkin Jr. and Doug Romasho, all of Kenner, La.

Maggie Reed

Funeral services for Maggie Lee Owens Reed, 83, of Alvin, will be held Saturday at Greater New Hope in Alvin with minister Donald Archie officiating. Graveside services followed in Jerusalem Cemetery in Spanish Camp.

Mrs. Reed died Dec. 13, 2002, at her home. She was born March 2, 1919, in Wharton County to Sadie Miller and Willie Sanford.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Rev. Clarence and Martha Owens Jr. of Spanish Camp, Carl and Audrey Owens of Lake Charles, La., and Ardley and Sheila Owens of Alvin; daughters and sons-in-law, Ceasie Owens of Hitchcock, Emma and Robert Thornton of Alvin, Crystal Pleasant of Alvin and Tina Pleasant of Alvin; sisters and brother-in-law, Clara Sanford and Nelly and Harbert Moses; brothers and sisters-in-law, Eddie Campbell, Jewel and Martha Pleasant and Willie and Lillian Sanford Jr.; 41 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

Claudia Schmidt

Memorial services for Claudia Elsa Schmidt, 46, of Houston, will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Church of Jesus Christ in Boling with Rev. Bobby Charles officiating. A church service will follow.

Ms. Schmidt died Nov. 9, 2002, at Methodist Hospital from complications of pneumonia. She was born Dec. 30, 1956, at Gorgas Hospital, Ancon, Canal Zone, to Wilbur F. “Bronco” Schmidt of Waller and the late Gladys B. Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her mother; brother, Joseph E. Schmidt; niece, Crystal L. Jansky; and nephew, Eddie P. Jansky.

Survivors include father, Wilbur Schmidt of Waller; brothers, Rocky S. Schmidt of Wharton, John W. Schmidt of Austin, Richard L. Schmidt of El Campo and Eric Schmidt of Oregon; sisters, Pamela K. Schmidt of Boling, Lastenia L. Schmidt of Angleton, Laura Schmidt of San Antonio, Karen Schmidt of California and Lane Schmidt of Houston; nieces, Shirley A. Jansky of Austin, Lisa M. Venglar of Boling and Amanda and Salina Schmidt of Wharton; nephews, Arthur Castillo of Boling and Kurt T. Jansky of Austin.

Bruce Webster

Bruce Herbert Webster Jr., age 82, of Boling died Wednesday, Dec. 12, 2002, at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He was born on Sept. 3, 1920, in Wharton, the son of Hester “Betty” Elizabeth Webster and Bruce Herbert Webster.

He married Muriel Triffitt while serving as a member of the military Police with the armed forces stationed in England during World War II. She preceded him in death on March 7, 1982.
Mr. Webster is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Susan and Robert Zielonka of Needville, Glenna and Richard Senf of Boling and Christine Webster and Alfred Dube of Wimberley. He is survived by seven grandchildren, Angela Aguilar of Needville, Christopher Zielonka of El Maton, Heather Zielonka of Needville, Rick Senf of Boling, Kimberly Lamascus of Junction, Robert Senf of Boling and Nathan Reid of Austin. He also has seven great-grandchildren, Jessica and Jairon Aguilar of Damon, Andrew, Myranda and Blake Zielonka of El Maton, Landon and Lauren Lamascus of Junction.

Mr. Webster worked at Texasgulf, Inc. for more than 35 years and was an active member of the Boling Lions Club. He is a Past Grand Master of the Wharton Masonic Lodge No. 621. Mr. Webster loved the outdoors and music of all kinds. He supported the National Rifle Association with contributions and volunteer work. Mr. Webster was a deeply spiritual man and for many years he was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton. During the last four years he supported Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda, “The Mother Church of Texas,” as a lay reader and licensed lay Eucharist minister.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda with Rev. Harley Savage officiating. Graveside services and interment were held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 16, 2002, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Pallbearers were Rick Senf, Robert Senf, Nathan Reid, Christopher Zielonka, David Zielonka and Johnny Lamascus.

Honorary Pallbearers were Alfred Rogers, Bert Koons, Norman Hill, all members of the Boling Lions Club, Wharton Masonic Lodge No. 1621 AF&AM and the “X” Team of Christ Episcopal Church.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to Christ Episcopal Church in Matagorda or the American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite 420, Houston, Texas 77057.
Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.
