Frank Longoria

Frank Longoria, age 73, of Wharton, died Thursday, April 17, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born on May 19, 1929, in Gussettville, the son of the late Eligio and Enriqueta Muniz Longoria.

Mr. Longoria married Patsy Cadriel on Sept. 26, 1954, in Wharton. He worked as a self-employed brick layer prior to retiring in 1991. Mr. Longoria had resided in Wharton the past 50 years and was a former resident of George West and Boling. He was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and loved horse racing, fishing and working on old cars.

Graveside services will be held today, Saturday, at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, April 18, 2003, in the Wharton Funeral Home Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Longoria of Wharton; daughter, Linda Kay Longoria of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Marcus and Carmen Longoria of Wharton, Leroy and Mary Alice Longoria of Wharton, Ricky and Mona R. Longoria of Wharton, Henry and Mary Longoria of Wharton and Larry Longoria of Wharton; sisters, Estella DeLeon of Victoria and Janie Garcia of Bay City; brothers, Alonzo Longoria of California, Bennie Longoria of San Antonio and Lupe Longoria of Minnesota; 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by sisters, Marcela Longoria and Epaphina Longoria and brothers, Eno Longoria and Paul Longoria.

Pallbearers will be Austin Williams, Lester Williams, Henry Longoria Jr., Phillip Castro, Philip Longoria and Mark Longoria.

Honorary pallbearers are Daniel Mata, Henry Charles, Ceasar Morales, Joe Cadriel, Lito Rodriguez, Albert Ortiz, P.A., Dr. Dan Madsen, Dr. David Jansen, Dr. Henry Lopez Roman, Dr. Arthur Chau and Dr. Suresh Philip.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Ave., Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mike Ford

Funeral services for Mike Ford Jr., 69, of Kendleton, will be held at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, at New Faith Church with Rev. M.D. Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mr. Ford died Oct. 14, 2003, after a sudden illness. He was born Aug. 5, 1934, in Glen Flora to Mike Ford Sr. and Serelda Stephens.

He was a lifelong resident of Kendleton and worked as a machinist in the oil field. Mr. Ford was Baptist by faith. He married Kathryn Ford on Aug. 7, 1955.

Survivors include wife, Kathryn Ford; daughters, Georgia Lee Green, Deborah Mosely, Sheryl Foster, Dianna Irving, Angelia Packard, Charlotte Shanks and Valencia Humphrey; sons, Anthony Ford and Terrance Humprey Jr.; sister, Zola Sanford; 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Herminia Garza

Funeral services for Herminia M. Garza, 81, of Wharton, were held Thursday at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Thomas Matthews officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Garza died Oct. 13, 2003, in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. She was born in Bishop on March 27, 1922, the daughter of the late Juan Martinez and Hermina Sandoval Martinez.
She had been a lifelong resident of Wharton County and was a homemaker. Mrs. Garza married Pedro Garza Sr. in Bay City in 1941 and he preceded her in death on Feb. 3, 1977. She was also preceded in death by one sister, one brother, one grandson and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Garza was a member of the Agape House Ministries in Bay City.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law; Eva Reyna of Bay City and Tina and Alex Ramirez of Wharton; son, Pete Garza Jr. of Lane City; sisters, Olga Blanco of Corpus Christi, Delia Luera, Rosalinda Mireles and Rosalva Garza, all of Bay City; brothers, Oscar Martinez of Ashwood and Lalo Martinez of Boling; eight grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Cancer Society, 204 Second Street, Wharton, TX 77488.

Ruby Harper

Ruby Mae Goeckler Harper, 89, of Wharton died Oct. 9, 2003, at the home of her granddaughter Gwen Pierce in El Campo. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 25, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 608 E. Emily in Wharton with Bro. Donald Roogers officiating.

She was born Feb. 4, 1914, in the historic Alley log cabin near Ramsey in Colorado County to Gustav and Frances Glaiser Goeckler. The eldest of three children, she left school at 16 to care for her younger sister and brother when their mother died. Although circumstances did not allow her to graduate from high school or continue her formal education, her lifelong passion was helping others to stay in school and get an education and a diploma. She marked each occasion with celebrations, gifts, and words of love and wisdom. She married Horace G. Harper in 1938 and moved to Wharton where she lived her adult life with her husband and two children. A homemaker and a writer, Mrs. Harper spent her life caring for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A member of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, she spent many hours spreading her faith. For years she and her husband were active with the Wharton County Fair. She was a member and a past officer of the Home Demonstration Homemaker Clubs in Columbus and Wharton. She delighted in gardening, canning and cooking. She was a natural teacher who gladly shared recipes, advice, observations and life’s lessons. On her 80th birthday, she wrote “Looking Back Eighty Years,” chronicling her life growing up on a farm and ranch.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Horace; her son, Robert H. “Bobby” Harper; her grandson, Mark Lange; her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Elvie Herndon Goeckler; her nephew, Robert T. Moody; and niece, Ruth Goeckler Corner.

She is survived by her sister, Gladys Moody of Alleyton; daughter, Elizabeth Dickerson of Wharton; daughter-in-law, Patricia Daniels Harper of Wharton; grandchildren, Gwen Pierce and friend Mike Marrs of El Campo, Tim Dickerson and wife Nyet of Houston, Tiffany Riner and husband Larry of Wichita, Kan., and Paul, Jody and Helen Harper, all of Wharton; eight great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Harper is also survived by nieces and nephews throughout Texas and Louisiana.

Memorial contributions may be given to El Campo Hospice, 1102 N. Mechanic Street, El Campo, TX 77437. Or in honor of her generous spirit, do a good deed for someone today.

Markel Taylor
Graveside services for infant Markel Deshard Taylor of Wharton, will be held 3 p.m. today at New Prosperity Cemetery in Sorrel Community with Rev. L. Taylor officiating.
Markel was born in Wharton July 3, 2002, to Henry Louis and Bertha Kemper Taylor Sr. He died Sept. 4, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.
Survivors include grandparents, Ernestine Kemper and Norshia Chavis, both of Wharton; parents, Henry Louis and Bertha Kemper Taylor Sr. ; brothers, Henry Louis Taylor Jr., Keyshawn Taylor and Jamall Taylor, all of Wharton.

Daniel Zahradnik
Funeral services for Daniel Ray Zahradnik Sr., 59, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Zahradnik died Thursday at his residence after a brief illness.

Elsie Andel
Funeral services for Elsie Jetelina Andel, 74, of Victoria, will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Saturday, at Holy family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services will be held before the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m.

Mrs. Andel died Oct. 24, 2002, in Victoria. She was born Oct. 7, 1928, in East Bernard to the Late Mathew Jetelina and Mary Vaclavik Jetelina.

She married Frank Andel Jr. on July 9, 1946, in East Bernard and he preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1991. Mrs. Andel was a former resident of Egypt and a longtime resident of Boling. She worked as a food service manager at Iago Junior High School for 20 years and was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling. Mrs. Andel was also a member of the American Legion, Catholic Daughters and K.J.Z.T.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and William Bearden of Overland Park, Kan.; son and daughters-in-law, Edward and Romona Andel of Grand Prairie, Richard and Lori Andel of Victoria and James Andel of Grand Prairie; sisters, Mary Sebesta of Spring and Eleanora Socha of Galveston; brothers, John Jetelina and Joe Jetelina, both of Lane City; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Eric Christal

Funeral services for Rev. Eric Andre Christal, 38, of Eagle Lake, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church in Eagle Lake with Rev. T. Kuykendall officiating. Burial will follow in Eagle Lake Community North Cemetery.

Rev. Christal died Oct. 20, 2002, at Twelve Oaks Medical Center after an extended illness. He was born March 27, 1964, in Eagle Lake to Marvin and Joyce M. Aldridge Christal.

He was a lifelong resident of Eagle Lake and worked as a truck driver. Rev. Christal was Baptist by faith. He married the former Teresa Sue Prudue.

Survivors include wife, Teresa Sue Prudue Christal of Eagle Lake; daughter, Jaranessa Christal of Eagle Lake; sons, Jarrett Christal of Eagle Lake; sisters, Margaret Williams, Cynthia Kirkwood, Debra Maxwell and Berlinda Williams, all of Houston; parents, Marvin and Joyce Aldridge Christal of Eagle Lake; and grandmother, Margaret Aldridge of Eagle Lake.

Sylvia Gomez

Funeral services for Sylvia Chavela Gomez, 80, of Wharton, were held Wednesday at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Tuesday.

Mrs. Gomez died Oct. 20, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born on Sept. 10, 1922, in Hillje, the daughter of the late John Valdez and Anastasia Gonzalez Valdez.
She had been a resident of Wharton for the past 66 years and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. She married Miguel Gomez Sr. on April 30, 1949, in Wharton and he preceded her in death on April 11, 1982. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Janie “Penny” Gomez, two sisters, one brother and one grandchild. Mrs. Gomez was a former member of the choir at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, the Holy Sacrament and helped take care of the church for many years.

Survivors include daughter, Lily Rodriguez of McKinney; sons, Guadalupe Gomez and Mike Gomez, both of Wharton; brothers, Manuel Valdez of Corpus Christi, John Valdez Jr. of Deer Park, Jimmy Valdez of El Campo and Paul Valdez of Houston; 12 grandchildren, 31 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Arthur Jackson

Funeral services for Arthur Jackson Jr., 86, of Wharton, were held Friday at Little Concord Baptist Church with Rev. T.J. Cunningham officiating. Burial followed in Jaw Bone Cemetery.

Mr. Jackson died Oct. 22, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Sept. 1, 1916, in Wharton to Arthur and Vitula Dixon Jackson Sr.

He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and married the former Edith Tisdale. Mr. Jackson was a farmer and Baptist by faith.

Survivors include wife, Edith Jackson of Wharton; daughters, Lee Edna Potts of Corpus Christi and Helena J. Jones of San Antonio; sons, Warren Jackson and Lloyd Jackson, both of Houston; sister, Liza Nash of Houston; brothers, Nook Jackson, James Jackson and Hayward Jackson, all of Wharton, and Otis Jackson of Houston; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Louis Tuttle

Funeral services for Louis Tuttle Jr. (Capt. U.S. Navy Ret.), of Potomac Falls, Va., will be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 21, at Ft. Meyer Old Post Chapel with interment to follow in Arlington National Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20 at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon, Va.

Capt. Tuttle died Oct. 14, 2002, at Bethesda Naval Hospital. He was born May 5, 1922, in Shipley, Fla., to the late Louis K. and Blanche Alpard Tuttle and was reared in Wharton.

He lived in the Washington area since 1979. Capt. Tuttle was a member of the Class of 1943 of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. He served in the Pacific during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars. Capt. Tuttle served in Italy and the Philippines before retiring in 1972 as a fiscal officer for a Navy research and development program. Upon his retirement after 30 years in the Navy, Capt. Tuttle was awarded the Legion of Merit Medal for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the U.S. as well as several other combat decorations. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the National Genealogical Society and the Sons of the American Revolution. Capt. Tuttle was a volunteer reading instructor at Lowes Island Elementary School in Leesburg, Va. He was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Janet G. Tuttle. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Margaret T. and Corey Zimmerman of Leesburg, Va.; brother, Philip Tuttle of Houston; two grandsons.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, P. O. Box 64740, Baltimore, Md., 21264-4740 or Oak Leaf Club of the Washington, D.C. Area, National Navy Medical Center, P.O. Box 248, Bethesda, Md., 20889-5001.

Della Farris

Della Mae Wilbeck King Farris, age 102, of Ganado died Dec. 23, 2002, at her home in Ganado. She was born July 4, 1900, in Pierce, to Anton Christian and Elizabeth “Lizzie” Hattenbach Wilbeck. She was a lifelong resident of Jackson and Wharton counties. Mrs. Farris married Robert Clay King Dec. 24, 1925, and he preceded her in death Sept. 20, 1941.

In August 1946, she married Samuel Elbert Farris of Ganado. While there, they began ranching near Cordele, where she had often worked with her father. Mr. Farris passed away in January of 1951. She continued to be involved in ranching until the mid 90s.

Mrs. Farris has been a member of First United Methodist Church in Wharton since a young child. She was a member of the ladies circle group and participated in bible studies. Mrs. Farris was actively involved in the Home Demonstration Ladies and the Wharton County Fair. She was a member of the Wharton 42 Club and she enjoyed doing handwork, sewing, quilting, gardening, and canning throughout her life.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002, at First United Methodist Church in Wharton with Rev. Don Storey officiating. Interment followed in Wharton City Cemetery.
Her survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Kathryn and Wayne Adam of Wharton and Margaret Watkins of Ganado; grandsons, Frank Watkins and wife, Dorendia of Beaumont, Clay Adam of Austin, Gary Adam of Waco and Neal Adam and wife, Karen of Hungerford; great-grandson, Wade Watkins and wife, Amber of Ganado; sister, Montez Shackelford of Corpus Christi; four nieces and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Dora Hudgins, Elma Whittington and Elsie Harrison and one brother, Sidney Wilbeck.

Pallbearers were Frank Watkins, Clay Adam, Gary Adam, Neal Adam and Wade Watkins.

Honorary pallbearers were her nephews, Thomas Hudgins, Monte Shackelford, Alfred Whittington, Cruze Harrison, James Wilbeck and Clark Wilbeck.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 1717 Pioneer, Wharton, Texas 77488 or a charity of personal choice.

Gene Hobson

Memorial services for Gene Owen Hobson, 64, were held Tuesday, Feb. 11, at Earthman Southwest Chapel, Stafford.

Mr. Hobson died Feb. 6, 2003. He was born Oct. 10, 1938.

A graduate of Wharton High School, he had worked as an engineer for Dow, Nicholas and Mustang Engineering.

Survivors include his son, David Joseph Hobson and family of Richmond; and daughter, Lisa Kim Sheppard and family of Tampa, Fla.
