Cecil Jones

Funeral services for Cecil Rhea Jones, 93, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery.

Mrs. Jones died Feb. 7, 2003, after a long illness. She was born July 27, 1909, in Wharton, to John Franklin and Margaret Ellen Rhea.

She attended San Marcos State Teacher’s College and graduated from the University of Houston in 1950. She taught in the Houston Independent School District for 25 years. Mrs. Jones lived for a while in Sweeny and retired to Wharton in 1975 where she was active in the First Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1993; by three brothers, Alfred Rhea, Floyd Rhea and John Rhea; and sister, Mabel Frankum.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Wayne Maddox of Fort Worth; son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Bailey Rhea and Pat Jones of Mohnton, Pa.; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Dorothy Mosley

Funeral Services for Dorothy Jean Mosley, 62, of Altair, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wright Grove Baptist Church in Altair with Rev. A.J. Jones officiating. Burial will follow in Willing Workers Cemetery in Columbus. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friday at the church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Mosley died Feb. 8, 2003, at her home. She was born July 1, 1940, in Altair, to William I. Scott and Mattie Lee Booker Scott.

Survivors include husband, Rev. James Mosley of Altair; son: Kenneth W. Mosley of Austin; daughters, Debbie Baines of Wharton and Debra Jones of Eagle Lake; brother, Charles Scott of Altair; 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

William Sharp

Funeral services for William L. “Bill” Sharp, 84, of the Travis-Westphalia community will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the C.G.G.P. Funeral Home in Rosebud. Burial will follow in Phillips Cemetery in Travis.

Mr. Sharp died Feb. 9, 2003, at his home. He was born July 22, 1918, in Fannin County to Arthur and Mattie Sharp.

He served in the U.S. Navy from Oct. 16, 1941, to Oct. 6, 1945, most of the time aboard the U.S.S. Tennessee in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Sharp married Mary Virginia Stuckey on Jan. 7, 1945, at First Baptist Church in Dallas. Mr. Sharp retired from Merico, Inc. in July of 1983 and has lived in the Rosebud community since that time. He was an avid gardener, sharing produce with many in the community. Mr. Sharp was a member of First Baptist Church in Rosebud, VFW Post No. 6117 in Westphalia and the U.S.S. Tennessee Reunion Association.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia Sharp; daughter Patricia R. Sharp of Irving; sons and daughters-in-law, William Barry and Elaine Sharp of Wharton and Steven W. and Brenda Sharp of Upland, Calif.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Charles Stuckey.

Pallbearers are George Ganze, Leroy Spivey, Benjamin Sharp, Jarrod Sharp, Joshua Sharp and Zachary Sharp.

Marjorie Styles

Funeral services for Marjorie Odell Styles, 54, of East Bernard, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Friday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Styles died Feb. 10, 2003, at her home. She was born Feb. 13, 1948, in Detroit, Mich., to Albert Taylor Nelson Sr. and Marjorie E. Crawford Nelson.

Survivors include parents, Albert and Marjorie Nelson Sr. of Detroit, Mich.; husband, Paul E. Styles of East Bernard; brothers, Nadir Arbar of Detroit, Mich., Alford Nelson of San Antonio, Eddie Nelson of Detroit, Mich., and Albert Taylor Nelson Jr. of Troy, Mich.; sisters, Senora Lee of Detroit, Mich., and Lucretia Sain of Marietta, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Houston Hospice, 8811 Gaylord, Houston, Texas 77024.

Jesusa Garza

Jesusa Munoz Garza, age 79, of Hungerford, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born on May 22, 1923, in Runge, the daughter of Delores and Masinina Luera Munoz. From age nine, she was raised by Juan and Antonia M. Villegas.

Mrs. Garza married Trinidad Garza on Aug. 14, 1945, in Karnes City. She worked as a housewife and loved to cook and make tamales. Mrs. Garza was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Hungerford. She was a longtime resident of Hungerford and a former resident of East Bernard and Wharton.

Funeral mass was held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at St. John’s Catholic Church with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Interment followed in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. A rosary service was held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 21, 2003, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her husband, Trinidad Garza Sr. of Hungerford; sons and daughters-in-law, Trinidad and Frances Garza Jr. of Hungerford and Eduvi and Susie Garza Sr. of Hungerford; brother, Rudy Rivas of San Antonio; grandsons and wives, Miguel and Saunja Garza, Eduvi and Tina Garza Jr., Steve Garza and Edward and Teresa Garza; granddaughter, Eva Garza; and great-grandchildren, Nikolle, Alek, Edward, Valerie, Skye and Allison.

Pallbearers were Miguel Garza, Steve Garza, Edward Garza, Eduvi Garza Jr., Rudy Lozano and Robert Scott Collins.

Archie Hetherington

Archie Herbert Hetherington, 94, of Reagan, passed away Sunday, April 20, 2003, at Falls Community Hospital in Marlin. Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at 11:30 a.m. at Adams Funeral Chapel in Marlin with the Rev. Curtis Holland officiating.

Interment will be at the Calvary Cemetery in Marlin.

Mr. Hetherington was born Sept. 24, 1908, in Reagan, to John Charles and Frances Emma Tanner Hetherington.

He married Vida Elizabeth Sissom in Belton on Dec. 24, 1934. Mr. Heterington lived his entire life at Reagan, where he farmed and was a carpenter and paper hanger. He was a member of Reagan Baptist Church.

He is survived by daughter, Frances Elizabeth “Beth” Boettcher and her husband, Charles, of East Bernard; son, Dan Herbert Hetherington and his wife, Sharon, of Waco; grandchildren, Jerry Clem Boettcher and his wife, Robin, of East Bernard, Brenda Boettcher Hood and her husband, Jeff, of Austin, Kevin Hetherington and his wife, Michelle, of Waco, Jason Hetherington of San Marcos; step-son, Kris Neill of Austin; eight great-grandchildren and one foster great-grandchild; sisters-in-law, Irene Hetherington and Obelia “Bill” Hetherington of Oklahoma City, Okla., and Evelyn Snodgrass of Irving; brothers-in-law, Edward Sissom and Bill Sissom of Irving; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Vida Hetherington, his parents and his brothers, Andrew Monroe Hetherington and John Arthur Hetherington.

Margarita Rueda

Margarita “Margie” Longoria Rueda, age 54, of Wharton, died Saturday, April 19, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness. She was born on April 20, 1948, in Wharton County, the daughter of the late Pablo Longoria Sr. and Victoria Coronado Longoria.

She was a lifelong resident of Wharton County and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. She was a self-employed paint contractor for the past 10 years until her retirement in 2000. Mrs. Rueda was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a close friend to many.
Funeral mass services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, April 23, 2003, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Rosary services were held 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2003, at Wharton Funeral Home.
Survivors include her daughters, Jessica Cortez of Boling and Victoria Zavala of Needville; sons, Raymond Rueda of Boling, Ricky Garza of Wharton and Paul Longoria of Arcola; sisters, Jane Fuentes of Arcola, Mary Jane Marcus of Houston and Rose Montoya of West Columbia; brothers, Pablo Longoria Jr. of Houston and Benny Longoria of San Antonio; grandchildren, Jennifer, Adam, Chris and Victor Zavala, Venessa Mendez, Michael Marin, Ashley, Ricky and Julian Garza, Andrew, Anthony and Bailey Longoria, Bridget and Austin Childs, Chrystal, Mirinda and Samuel Cortez; and great-grandson, Joel Omos.

Pallbearers are Ricky Garza, Raymond Rueda, Paul Longoria, Ricky Garza Jr., Samuel Cortez, Roger Guzman, Andrew Longoria and Austin Childs.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Ralph Thomas

A memorial service for Ralph “Rusty” Thomas, 85, of Eagle Lake, will be held on at 2 p.m. Saturday at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake. Family and friends will gather following the service.

Mr. Thomas died April 16, 2003, after several years of residency at River Oaks Heath Care Center in Columbus. He was born to Moses and Clara Bell Causey Thomas in Lissie on Jan. 15, 1918.

He spent his childhood in Lissie and Eagle Lake and graduated in the class of 1935 at Eagle Lake High School. He was a rancher and rice farmer in the area for more than 60. Mr. Thomas was co-founder and managing director of the Thomas and Clipson Rodeo Company.

He was a 50-year member of Eagle Lake Lodge No. 366 A.F.& A.M., Arabian Shrine Temple of Houston and Eagle Lake Lions Club. Mr. Thomas was also member of the American Rice Growers’ Association and the Southwestern Cattlemen’s Association. He was recognized for his promotion of the American Cowboy and the sport of rodeo. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold Thomas and Dr. Raymond R. Thomas; and sisters, Alice Mae Hale and Ruth Seaholm.
Survivors include his wife, Kay Tilton Thomas; former wife, Mary Hight of Mill Valley, Calif.; daughter, Sandra Thomas of Raleigh, N.C.; son, John Thomas and wife, Marilyn, of Fredericksburg; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; step-sons, Craig Tilton of San Marcos and Mike Tilton and wife, Adriana of West Chester, Pa.; and nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the River Oaks Center, 300 North Street, Columbus, Texas 78934; or to a charity of personal choice.

Ignatious Majewski

Funeral services for Ignatious Majewski, 77, of East Bernard, were held Jan. 15, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Chappell Hill with Rev. Eugene Shepard officiating. Burial was in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Chappell Hill.

Mr. Majewski died Jan. 12, 2004, in Wharton. He was born in Chappell Hill to Willie and Brigetta Kaminski Majewski.

Survivors include his sister and brother-in-law, Frances and William Trclek of East Bernard; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Gertrude Majewski of East Bernard, Wallace and Barbara Wajewski of East Bernard, Chester and Ada Majewski of Katy, Leon and Linda Majewski of East Bernard and Victor and Gloria Majewski of Wallis; and numerous nieces, nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and infant siblings, Pete and Mary Majewski.

Bernarda Gusman

Funeral services for Bernarda “Lala” Gusman, 88, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary was recited Friday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mrs. Gusman died Jan. 14, 2004, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. She was born Dec. 29, 1915, in Pleasanton, the daughter of the late Ramon Alcorta and Rita Lopez Alcorta.
She had been a resident of Wharton for the past 65 years and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church and was a former member of the Guadalupanas. She was married to Alfredo Gusman and he preceded her in death in June of 1963. She was also preceded in death by 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Survivors include daughters, Lucinda Belasquez and Teresa Ramirez, both of Wharton, and Consuello Correra of Colona, Ill.; son, Richard Gusman of Wharton; sister, Cruz Robles of Angleton; 19 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Arthur Holland

Arthur I. Holland, 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, in Wharton. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was born in New York City, N.Y., Dec. 5, 1912, to David and Ida Gilbert Holland.

At age two, he proudly became a Texan. Mr. Holland was reared in Hallettsville and Beeville and graduated from the University of Texas in 1934, where he was a member of Tau Delta Phi fraternity. His enthusiasm for University of Texas continued throughout his life. Mr. Holland joined the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in World War II with the 460th Antiaircraft Battalion in Europe. He entered France on D-Day plus Three. On Jan. 17, 1943, he married Adine Harrison of Wharton, and following his military discharge as a captain in November of 1945, he made his home in Wharton, establishing his CPA practice with his father-in-law, Alex Harrison. Involved in many civic activities, he served as president of the Wharton Lions Club, was an active member for over 50 years, and was a Melvin Jones Fellow in the Lions International Foundation. For 57 years he was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Holland served as treasurer of Shearith Israel Congregation for 40 years and after his retirement from his accounting practice, he devoted himself to handling the day-to-day affairs of the congregation.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Adine Holland; his daughter, Libby Marvins and husband Buz of Houston; son, Gilbert Holland of Hong Kong; grandson, Bryan Marvins of Houston; granddaughter Alyssa Kay Beck and husband Micah of Austin; and great-grandson, Oscar David Beck.

Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 18, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home, 515 Boling Highway in Wharton, with burial at Shearith Israel Cemetery with Rabbi Roy Walter officiating.

Pall bearers are Bryan Marvins, Micah Beck, Herb Klein, Maurice Dubinski, Ellis Tudzin, Joe Staller, Larry Wadler, Norman Oshman and Mike Marvins.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Wharton Chapter of Hadassah, c/o Marlene Rosenberg, 1217 La Delle, Wharton TX 77488, Wharton Lions Club, P.O. Box 106, Wharton TX 77488 or a charity of personal choice.

Gumecindo Prado

Funeral services for Gumecindo S. Prado Sr., 74, will he held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the chapel of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg with Rev. Paul Aguilar officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Rosenberg. Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. Sunday, at Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home in Rosenberg. A prayer service will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Mr. Prado Died Jan. 14, 2004, in Wharton. He was born Oct. 13, 1929, in Donna to Bonefacio L. Prado and Leonor Sanchez Prado.

He retired from Wharton County after 17 years of service. He served in the U.S. Army from Nov. 4, 1952, through October 16, 1954.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Anita Prado; his parents; a brother, Lionel Prado; and a sister, Josephine Tamez.

Survivors include children Belen Harris and husband, Wyatt of East Bernard, Lionor Martinez and Rafael Diaz of East Bernard, Lionel Prado and wife Mary of East Bernard, Gumecindo Prado Jr. and his wife Loretta of East Bernard; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brothers, Bonefacio Prado Jr. of Donna and Robert Prado of Wharton; sisters, Lupe Rocha of Houston and Clara Conger of Alaska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

S.A. Anderson

Funeral services for S.A. Anderson, 91, of Wharton, will be held Monday, February 16, at 11 a.m. at Sand Ridge Baptist Church with Rev. A.C. Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Sand Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held Sunday from 6 to 9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday.
Mr. Anderson died February 9, 2004 at Avalon Place. He was born March 13, 1912 in Wharton to Joe and Liza Gordon Anderson.

He is survived by his wife, Pauline Winston Anderson of Wharton; daughter Lena Benford of Seattle Wash.; four grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friend.

Mattye O. S. Carroll

Funeral services for Mattye Olivia Sadler Carroll, age 95, of Wharton, will be held 12:00 p.m. Saturday February 14, 2004 at the Wharton Funeral Home with Reverend S. Denton Bassett officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mrs. Carroll died Wednesday, February 11, 2004 in Hurst, following a brief illness. She was born on June 21, 1908 in Bedias, Texas, the daughter of the late Robert E. Lee Sadler and Emma Stephenson Sadler.
Mrs. Carroll was a 54 year resident of Wharton and a member of the First Baptist Church. She married Edward A. Carroll on November 11, 1930 in Yoakum, Texas. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1967.
Mrs. Carroll was a graduate of Bedias High School and she later earned her teaching certificate from Sam Houston Normal Institute in Huntsville. She taught for many years in Kennedy County and the Tivoli School District until her retirement.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Eddie W. and Jill Carroll of Colleyville and Don H. and Kitty Carroll of Pflugerville,; grandchildren, Wednesday Carroll Fettig, Clinton Carroll, Lindsay Carroll; grandchildren by marriage, Monica Ward and Gary Ward; great-grandchildren Zachary, Taylor and Jessica Fettig; and one great-grandson by marriage, Joshua Peetoom. She is also survived by her sole remaining sister, Pearl Sadler Thompson who resides in Huntsville, attended to by her family.
Pallbearers are Toby Fettig, Major Benge, Jeffrey Blair, Larry Sitka, Darell Stewart and Ben Mulhausen.
