Gladys Melcher

Funeral services for Gladys Melcher, 75, of El Campo will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo with Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery in El Campo.

Mrs. Melcher died Sept. 4, 2004, at Garden Villa Nursing Home after an extended illness. She was born April 20, 1929, in El Campo to Claud D. and Lula Johnston Jacobs.

She was a 1947 graduate of El Campo High School and attended Wharton County Junior College for two years. Mrs. Melcher was employed at O.F. Walzel Office Equipment in El Campo for 33 years. She also worked part-time for Collis Haynes, CPA. Mrs. Melcher married Andrew Melcher on Jan. 17, 1951, and he preceded her in death in 1993. She was a member of First Baptist Church in El Campo.

Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Dr. Garland Novosad of Wharton and Sharon and Randy Hudson of Hartville, Mo.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Eva Lois and Raymond Williams of El Campo and Ruby and Seymour Wright of Missouri; brother, Bruce Jacobs and wife of Pflugerville; six grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one step-granddaughter and one step great-grandson; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; infant daughter, Terrie Sue Melcher; husband; and two brothers, Marvin and Donald Jacobs.

Charlotte Orsak

Following cremation, memorials services for Charlotte Nadine Orsak, 78, of Wharton, will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Church in El Campo with Pastor Keith Gibbons officiating. Burial will follow in the Garden of Memories Cemetery in El Campo.

Mrs. Orsak died Sept. 5, 2004, in a Bay City nursing home after an extended illness. She was born on March 3, 1926, in Orange, the daughter of the late Abraham Cooper and Nellie Chapman Cooper.
She was a 44-year resident of Wharton and Baptist by faith. She was self-employed until her retirement in 1994.

Survivors include her son, Herschel S. Williamson Jr. and wife, Ruth Ann of Linwood, Mich.; daughters, Patricia Ann Fink and husband, Richard of El Campo, Charlotte R. Long and husband, Carl of Wharton and Donnia S. Davis and husband, Randy of Groveland, Ill.; sister, Alice Walters of Vinton, La.; 10 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

H.R. Bass

Memorial services for H. R. Bass, 57, of Wharton, were held Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church of Wharton with Rev. Debbie Cenko officiating. Graveside services and interment were Thursday at Resthaven Cemetery in Shawnee, Okla., with Rev. J. Clifton Briscoe officiating.
Mr. Bass died Oct. 16, 2004, in a Houston hospital after an extended illness. He was born on Sept. 17, 1947, in Shawnee, Okla., the son of Harvey Murl Bass and Delores Bryce Bass.

He was reared in Oklahoma and following graduation from high school he received his bachelor’s degree from Oklahoma Baptist University and later his MBA from Oklahoma University. Mr. Bass served in the U.S. Army as a payroll officer in Fort Dix, N.J., until his honorable discharge. He was a former Oklahoma State Bank Examiner, restaurant owner and radio station manager in Oklahoma City, Galveston, Wharton, Palestine and Bay City.
Most recently Mr. Bass was the owner of his advertising agency, Texas Media and Production Company. He was in the process of making his first movie, “No Place But Texas,” with Chalk Peak Productions, as a partner of the company and producer and director of the movie.
Mr. Bass married Regena Louise Ham on July 4, 1992, in New Orleans, La. He was a 20-year resident of Wharton and a former resident of Oklahoma and Galveston. Mr. Bass was an elder and member of First Presbyterian Church of Wharton.
Survivors include wife, Regena Bass of Wharton; daughters, Lacy Squires of Wharton and Shellie McClary of Oklahoma City, Okla.; parents, Harvey and Delores Bass of Shawnee, Okla.; and three grandchildren.

Ruth K. Smith

The funeral service for Ruth K. Smith of Victoria, Texas, age 87, will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2004 at the Rhodes Funeral Chapel, 115 South Esplanade, Karnes City, Texas. Rev. William Menn will preside over the service with burial to follow at Karnes City Cemetery.

Mrs. Smith died Thursday, October 21, 2004 in Yorktown, Texas. She was the mother of Helen S. Kerlich of Wharton.

Esther Schroeder

Following cremation, memorial services for Esther Schroeder, 96 of Wharton, will be held 2 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Wharton.

Ms. Schroeder died Dec. 1, 2004, in Wharton. She was born on Sept. 8, 1908, in Brenham, the daughter of the late Fred Schroeder and Emma Steinman Schroeder.
She was a former resident of Eagle Lake before moving to Wharton in 1981. Ms. Schroeder was a homemaker and a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Wharton.

Survivors include her sister, Lilly Reese of Wharton, and five nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Ola Reagan, and two brothers, Willie and Charlie Schroeder.

Loraine Ward

Funeral services for Loraine “Low” Ward Sr., 66, of Texas City, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, at Mount Olive Baptist Church, 3602 Sealy, in Galveston with Rev. Walter Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Bowden Cemetery in Wharton at 2:30 p.m. under the direction of E.R. Johnson Family Mortuary, 3828 Avenue O, in Galveston. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at E. R. Johnson Family Mortuary.

Mr. Ward died Feb. 10, 2005, in Texas City. A native of Wharton County, he was born Jan. 13, 1939, to Eugene Sr. and Willie Edna Brown Ward.

He attended public school in Wharton County and was a retired operator from the Kelso Company.

Survivors include his wife, Irene Ward; son, Loraine Ward Jr.; daughters and son-in-law, Loretta and Larry Lewis, Tonya and Sonya Ward and Andrea Cahee, all of Texas City; 12 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, James and Rosa Bell Ward and Sylvester “Tip” Ward; sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and James Heard.

Cleveland Hobby Brown Jr.

Funeral services for Cleveland Hobby Brown Jr., 37, of Wharton will be Saturday, July 29, 2006 at 1 p.m. at Macedonia Baptist Church with Rev. L.C. Humphrey officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, July 28 from 6 to 9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Brown died July 24, 2006 at his home. He was born July 9, 1969 in El Campo to Cleveland Hobby and Earnestine Hahn Brown Sr.

Surviving are his father, Cleveland Hobby Brown Sr. of Houston; mother Earnestine Hahn Brown of Wharton; sons Patrick Noel Dickerson of Wharton, Cleveland Hobby Brown III, Cedric Hobbier Brown and Corie Dewayne Brown all of Houston; daughter, C’erra Monique Scott of Houston; sisters Cheryl Yvette Brown of Bay City, Cara Denise Brown Bess of Richmond and Chrystal Lanette Brown of Wharton; grandparents Costella Hahn and Deloris Gray of Wharton; a host of other relatives and friends.

Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Victoria Anderson

Funeral services for Victoria Anderson, 99, of Egypt, will be held noon today, Saturday, at Camp Zion Rising Star United Baptist Church with Rev. A.C. Gardner officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson died April 3, 2003, at Triumph Hospital of Southwest Houston. She was born Dec. 8, 1903, in Wharton to Alex and Cora Robertson Coleman Sr.

Survivors include daughter, Dorothy Shorter of Egypt; brother, Milton Coleman of Texas City; sisters, Jo Bessie Gray of Oakland, Calif., and Fannie Turner of Missouri City; 18 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren along with a host of other relatives and friends.

Cherry Dickerson

Funeral services for Cherry Lee Dickerson, 81, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Center Union Baptist Church with Rev. M. Gray officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Sunday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Mrs. Dickerson died June 4, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 22, 1921, in Wharton to Clarence and Parthenia Edwards Bowden.
Survivors include her sister, Bernice Emerson of Houston.

Shirley Ferguson

Shirley Ann Tally Ferguson, age 59, of Round Rock and a former resident of Wharton, died Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, in Austin following an extended illness. She was born on May 12, 1944, in Wharton, the daughter of the late Clifford Marion Tally and Gearldine Tyson Tally.

Shirley was raised in Wharton and was a 1962 graduate of Wharton High School. She was employed as an apartment office manager in Austin and most recently as an assistant manager for Eckerd’s Pharmacy in Austin. Mrs. Ferguson was a resident of Austin from 1985 until 2000 when she moved to Round Rock. She was Methodist by faith.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held 2 p.m. today, Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, at the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thomasson officiating.

Survivors include her daughter and son in law, Debby and Robert Moody of Round Rock; son, Jon Kenneth Ferguson Jr. of Katy; sister and brother-in-law, Kathy and Tom Hudgins of Bay City; and grandchildren, Jon Kenneth Ferguson III, Rebecca Ann Ferguson, Rachel Marie Ferguson, Bailey Dee Moody and Thomas Royce Moody. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Marion Crump and brother, August Tally.

George Hevener

George Phillip Hevener, age 84, of Boling, died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, in a Wharton hospital. He was born on March 14, 1919, in Houston, the son of the late Jay Hevener and Lucy Strach Hevener.
Mr. Hevener was a graduate of Boling High School and he attended John Tarleton College. He was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict having served in the U.S. Army. He married Marian Adelaide Gregory on Dec. 15, 1946, in Newgulf and she preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 1994. Mr. Hevener was an 11-year resident of Newgulf before moving to Boling in 1961. He was employed by Texas Gulf Sulphur for more than 40 years, having worked in the traffic department until his retirement in 1982. Mr. Hevener is a member of the First Baptist Church of Boling and the Wharton American Legion. He was a former leader of the Royal Ambassadors in Newgulf, a former coach of the Newgulf Little League and was an avid supporter of the Boling High School Athletic Programs.
Graveside services and interment will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at the Wharton City Cemetery with Mickey Reynolds officiating and Rev. Skip Holman assisting.

Friends may call for visitation from 8:30 a.m. until noon Sunday at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Nettie and Jon Mosteller of Woodstock, Ga.; son, Jay C. Hevener of Boling; and grandson, Joshua Glen Harvey of Waco.

If desiring, memorials may be made to a charity of personal choice.

Dorothy Williams

Dorothy Valerian Williams, age 78, of Wharton, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, in Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born on Sept. 30, 1924, in Wylie, the daughter of the late Morris A. Callaway and Iva L. Donihoo Callaway.

She married Joe Valerian in 1942 in Wallis and he preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1953.

She later married Harold Williams in 1956 in Houston and he preceded her in death in July of 1976.
Mrs. Williams was a 21-year resident of Houston before moving to Wharton in August of 1977. She was a lifelong homemaker. Mrs. Williams enjoyed playing bridge with her bridge club. She worked in Wharton early voting elections for many years.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Charles Kelly officiating. Interment will follow in the Wallis Catholic Cemetery.

Survivors include brother, Kenneth R. Callaway and wife, Louise of Bay City; niece, Jean Callaway and nephew, Terry Callaway, both of Wallis.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Judith Valerian in 1953, and by a son, Harold Andrew Williams in 1980.

Pallbearers are Terry Callaway, Michael Callaway, Jonathan Callaway, Albert Horvath, Cecil Verm and Dick Curry.

Jay Cooper

A memorial service for Jay Gerard Cooper, 44, formerly of Wharton, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Winchester, Va. Burial will follow in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mr. Cooper died March 23, 2003, in Winchester, Va. He was born April 25, 1958, in Portsmouth, Va., the son of Robert Carl and Rosalie McGoldrick Cooper, also formerly of Wharton.
He was an assemblyman for Northwestern Workshop in Winchester, Va. Mr. Cooper attended St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his father, Robert Cooper of Washington, D.C.; sisters, Mary Boushie of Los Angeles, Calif., Frani Boberg of Farmville, N.C., Rosalie Cooperchase and Martha Olivo, both of Crockett, Donna C. Hall of Wharton and Maggie Frye of Winchester, Va.; and brothers, Robert Cooper Jr. of Greenville, S.C., Joe Cooper of Grapeview, Wa., and Christopher “Chris” Cooper of Wharton.

Memorials may be made to Northwestern Workshop, 828 Smithfield Avenue, Winchester, Va., 22601; or to Wharton Enterprises, 1017 1/2 North Alabama Road, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Richard Melton

Funeral services for Richard Brock Melton, 52, of Owensboro, Ken., and formerly of Wharton, were held Thursday at Christ Chapel at Owensboro Memorial Gardens. Burial followed in Owensboro Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Melton died March 31, 2003, at his home. He was a pipefitter in the construction industry and a former resident of Wharton for 46 years. Mr. Melton was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a para medic. A son, Richard Brock Melton Jr., preceded him in death in 1980. His parents, Orval Richard and Prebble Lucille Chambliss Melton, also preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife, Margaret Mann Melton of Owensboro; sons, Peter Joseph Melton, Matthew Louis Melton and Russell Benjamin Melton, all of East Bernard; step-sons, John T. Mann of Owensboro and Michael A. Mann of Newart, Calif.; brothers, Harold V. Melton of Wharton and John W. Melton of Marlin; and sister, Leona P. Housos of Houston; and three step- grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Richard Melton Memorial Fund, 900 Old Hartford Road, Owensboro, Ken., 42303.
