Frank Shannon

Frank Albert Shannon Jr., age 76, of Wharton, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston. Known as “PaPa” to his grandchildren, he was born June 12, 1926 in Wharton, to Mary Lee (Wilson) and Frank Albert Shannon.

He was to be their only child, but was adopted into friends’ families all over town. The “Andy Hardy" of the neighborhood, always clowning around and sometimes getting into trouble, he was good-natured and fun-loving from the beginning. Sports, especially football, played a major role in his young life.

Mr. Shannon attended Bullis Preparatory School in Suburban Washington, D.C., and was on the All-Metro Prep Football Team. He was inducted into the Bullis Athletic Hall of Fame in November of 2002. He graduated from Wharton High School, enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps and rose to the rank of corporal while serving in Germany at the close of World War II. After the war, he was in the first class to attend Wharton County Junior College and lettered in basketball. He then went to Baylor University and was given the nickname “ Cheetah,” because of his small frame and cat-like quickness on the gridiron. Known for his hard-nosed style of play, he won a letter his senior year and earned a BS degree in 1951.

Mr. Shannon returned to Wharton to help his mother run the Wharton Spectator, following his father’s death, Widely known for exceptional writing skills, he devoted most of his attention to local sports. He later began a career in sports and news broadcasting at KULP radio in El Campo. As his professional career developed across the county, so did his reputation as a man of integrity and commitment to serve. Perhaps his favorite position was as a public relations representative for Gulf Oil Corporation. Frank drove a sound truck across the southern U.S. setting up a portable public address system, while occasionally serving as emcee and playing music. His friendly manner in dealing with people and professional announcing skills were a perfect match for customers’ needs and Mr. Shannon’s abilities. It was an especially gratifying experience for him, which ended when Gulf Oil terminated the program due to cost cutting measures. Mr. Shannon worked as a bank officer for Wharton County Savings and Loan and an appraiser for DEBCO prior to becoming justice of the peace for Wharton County. His 20 years of service to the citizens of Precinct 1 were of real importance to him. As a justice, who was sworn to uphold the law, he treated everyone equally and with respect. Even though some of the defendants who appeared in his court or appeared before him in jail were fully aware their wrong doings, Mr. Shannon saw the good in them and treated them like human beings. They respected him for this. He was loved by all for his kindness and respect for other people.

Mr. Shannon loved the Lord and his family and friends. He enjoyed golf, had been a lay reader and lector at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, taught Sunday School at First Baptist Church and was adjutant and chaplain for American Legion Post No. 87. He was a Master Mason, receiving his 50-year pin in 2002 at Lodge No. 621. Mr. Shannon was chaplain of the South Texas Justices of the Peace for the past five years.

He is survived by his lovely wife of 52 years, Patsy C. Shannon of Wharton; sons and daughter-in-law, Frank A. and Debbie Shannon III of Charleston, S.C., and Paul Dayvault and Patty Shannon of Wharton; seven grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 16, 2003, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Wharton with the Rev. Hoss Gwin and the Rev. Carl Shannon officiating.
