Kevin Johnson

Funeral services for Kevin Wayne Johnson, 33, of Wharton, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Concord Baptist Church with Rev. T.J. Cunningham officiating. Burial will follow in Jaw Bone Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Friday. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mr. Johnson died at his home Sept. 13, 2003. He was born Feb. 26, 1970, in Wharton to L.P. Richardson and Ruby Johnson.

Survivors include brothers, Russell Johnson and Alfred Johnson, both of Wharton; sisters, Lillie McClatehy, Helen J. Crockett, Mary J. Ephran, Sylvia Johnson, Joyce Johnson, Cheryl J. Axel and Karen Johnson, all of Wharton, and Vera B. Johnson of Corpus Christi.

Albert Meyers

Funeral services for Albert Meyers Sr., 75, of Los Angeles, Calif., were held Tuesday at the Gooden-Hatton Funeral Chapel with Rev. E. Matthews officiating. Burial followed in Bowden Cemetery.

Mr. Meyers died Sept. 9, 2003, at Centinella Medical Center. He was born Jan. 4, 1928, in Wharton County to Jessie and Emma Nickerson Meyers Sr. In 1961 he moved to Los Angeles, Calif.

Survivors include sons, Christopher Meyers, Ozzie Massey Jr. and Albert Miles-Meyers Jr.; daughter, Shirley Miles; brother, Rev. Cleveland Meyers; and nine grandchildren.

Sotero Luera

Sotero R. Luera, age 90, of Wharton, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, in an El Campo nursing home following an extended illness. He was born on April 22, 1913, in Nursery, the son of the late Tilesforo Luera and Sara Rodriguez Luera.

Mr. Luera had been a longtime resident of Newgulf and moved to Wharton in 1980. He worked as a tool pusher for Texasgulf Sulphur until his retirement in 1975. Mr. Luera married Pilar Montelongo on Jan. 6, 1940, in Wharton. He was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers. Mr. Luera enjoyed working in his yard and outdoors.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. A funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Henry Rachunek officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Pilar Luera of Wharton; daughter, Mary Helen Rodriguez of Richmond; sons, Henry Luera of Houston, Dario Luera of Rosenberg and Sotero Luera Jr. of Wharton; a sister, Sara Trevino of Victoria; 15 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers were Bobby Luera, Henry Luera Jr., David Luera, Michael Luera, Rodney Rodriguez, Steven Luera, Richard Luera, Dario Luera Jr., Sotero Luera III, Joey Rodriguez and Alfred Rodriguez.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests memorials to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 506 S. East Avenue, Wharton, Texas 77488; or Hospice Support Inc., 1102 N. Mechanic, Suite B, El Campo, Texas 77437.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lillie Ray

Funeral services for Lillie Mae Ray, 102, of Brenham were held Tuesday at Camp Zion Rising Star Baptist Church with Rev. C. Owens Jr. officiating. Burial followed in Camp Zion Cemetery.

Mrs. Ray died at her home Sept. 13, 2003. She was born July 4, 1901, in Wharton to Sam and Lula Isreal Johnson.

Survivors include sons, Roscoe Ray and Roy James Ray, both of Houston, and Rev. Raymond Ray of Brenham.

Virgil Richards

Virgil Berry Richards was born Sept. 24, 1901, in Indian Territory near Wetumka, Okla., the son of James Charles Richards and Laura Ann Crawford Richards. He was delivered at home by Dr. Berry, and his middle name is in honor of the doctor.

Mr. Richards grew up with eight brothers and one sister on a farm at Spring Hill, not far from his birthplace. He attended a one-room school, completing all 10 grades that the school offered.
On April 24, 1923, Mr. Richards married the former Janie Lancial, and the couple enjoyed a close relationship that lasted more than 75 years, until her passing in 1998 at the age of 93. Mr. Richards took great pride in his family, including his daughter and son-in-law, Louise Mary and Henry Volz; his grandsons and their wives, John and Candace Volz and Robert and Pauline Volz; and five great grandchildren, Warren, Emery, Evelyn, Stephen and Megan Volz.

This industrious young man farmed and also was a house mover, coal miner, oil field worker and refinery stillman. He moved to Corpus Christi in 1938 to work for Pontiac Refining Company, which later become Great Southern, and in 1946 he began a 19-year career with Phillips Petroleum Company at its refinery in Old Ocean, retiring in 1965 as assistant superintendent.

After retirement, Mr. Richards and his wife moved to Okmulgee, Okla., to be near old friends and for the fishing. Then in 1979 they moved back to Texas and bought a house near their daughter in Wharton.

Over the course of his 101 years, this esteemed gentleman lived under the leadership of 19 presidents, survived the Great Depression, and saw the development of myriad historic inventions, including coal-fired, then oil-fired, steam trains, the automobile and national road system, airplanes and computers.

Mr. Richards brought significant happiness to his friends and relatives and has had a positive impact on countless individuals whose lives he touched. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and gardening and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wharton.

Funeral services were Monday, Sept. 15, at 3 p.m. from Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Mack Mathis officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his daughter, Louise Volz of Wharton; brothers, Frank Richards of Illinois and Garland Richards of California; grandsons, John Volz and Robert Volz, and five great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Robert West, Garland Novosad, Bill Joines, Tim Barker, Paul Svatek, Warren Volz, Emery Volz and John Reed.

Honorary pallbearers were Ed Eppes, Roy Whitsett, William Barker, Franklin Sommers, Doc Barfield, Clay Richardson and Doug Soderstrom.

If desiring, memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488; or the Wharton Cancer Center, 1400 Highway 59, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Albina Sablatura

Albina Kathryn Sablatura, 87, of Wharton died Sept. 15, 2003, in Wharton. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in El Campo.

Friends may call for visitation starting at 6 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. today at the Funeral Home.

Charlie Bledsoe
Funeral services for Charlie Bledsoe Sr., 65, of LaMarque, were held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, at East Gate/New Prosperity Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. Bledsoe died Dec. 15, 2003, at his residence. He was born July 16, 1938, in Wharton to Freddie and Catherine Woodard Bledsoe.

He worked as a refinery foreman.

Survivors include wife, Verna Buck Bledsoe of LaMarque; mother, Catherine Bledsoe of Wharton; daughters Stephanie Johnson, Cynthia Rich, Maggie Bledsoe and Belinda Fleeton, all of Texas City, Bridgett Jones and Carlette Bledsoe, both of LaMarque; sons, Charlie Bledsoe Jr., Kenneth Johnson and Marcellous Johnson, all of LaMarque; 28 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Cara Owens Bledsoe, and one sister.

Shane Hough

Memorial services for Shane Alan Hough, 29, of Needville, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Wheeler Funeral Home in El Campo with Thomas Hlavinka officiating.

Mr. Hough died Dec. 17, 2003, in Houston, after a brief illness. He was born Oct. 21, 1974, in Wharton to Jack and Patti Hough.

He married the former Brandi Haga and was employed at Center Point Energy.

Survivors include wife, Brandi Hough of Needville; parents Jack and Patti Braden Hough of Lissie; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Jim and Shirley Haga of Wharton; daughters, Shawna Hough and Kaitlyn Hough, both of Needville; brothers, Corey Hough, Brady Hough and Cole Hough, all of Lissie; and five nieces.

William Keprta

Funeral services for William Joseph “Bill” Keprta, 70, of Beaumont, were held Friday at St. Jude Thaddeus Catholic Church in Beaumont. Entombment followed at Magnolia Cemetery. Rosary services were held Thursday.

Mr. Keprta died Dec. 16, 2003, after a lengthy illness. He was born April 12, 1933, in East Bernard, the son of Joe and Marie Keprta.

Following graduation from East Bernard high school, he served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956. He moved to Beaumont in 1959. Mr. Keprta was a retired operator from Texas Gulf Sulfur Company in Beaumont and spent the past 14 years serving at St. Jude Catholic Church in Beaumont, where he was also a member. He was a member of the Catholic Czech Organization of Texas-KJT, St. Jude’s Men and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Patricia; daughter, Erica Keprta of Beaumont; sons and daughters-in-law, Sean and Kathie Keprta of League City, Colin and Kelly Keprta and Joel Keprta, all of Seabrook; one grandson; sisters and brother-in-law, Henrietta and Edward Norris of Galveston and Elaine May of San Antonio; and brothers and sisters-in-law, George Keprta of Plano, Dennis and Dorothy Keprta of Rosenberg and Lydgie and Justine Keprta of Clute.

Memorial contributions may be made to Some Other Place, 1240 McFaddin, Beaumont, TX 77701; or Catholic Charities, P.O. Box 829, Beaumont, TX 77704-0829.

Harlan Speidel

Harlan Richard Speidel, age 56, of Wharton, died Sunday night, Dec. 14, 2003, in a Wharton hospital following a sudden illness. He was born on Dec. 22, 1946, in Great Bend, Kan., the son of Edwin Jacob Speidel and Doris Krause Speidel.

Mr. Speidel was a 1965 graduate of Monahans High School and received his BS degree from Sul Ross University in 1976. He was a former resident of Monahans and moved to Wharton in 1972. Mr. Speidel married Barbara Ann Knott on May 23, 1970, in Odessa. He has worked with Wharton I.S.D. for the past 31 years and was in charge of the Marketing Co-Op Program at Wharton High School. Mr. Speidel also taught business law and accounting. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Wharton Masonic Lodge AF & AM No. 621. Mr. Speidel was also a Shriner and a member of the Scottish Rite and the Order of the Eastern Star. He was a former member of the DeMolay. Mr. Speidel was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Speidel, Feb. 9, 1981, and his father. He was Methodist by faith.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and graveside services followed at the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery and were under the direction of the Wharton Masonic Lodge No. 621.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Speidel of Wharton; mother, Doris Speidel of Temple; brother and sister-in-law, Durwin and Candyce Speidel of Houston, three nephews and one niece also survive.
Pallbearers were Paul Fertsch, Jay Knott, Jamin Speidel, Stuart Speidel, Doug Dusek and Roy Taylor.
Honorary Pallbearers were all of his fellow teachers, students, former students, friends and neighbors.
In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the American Diabetes Association, 2400 Augusta Drive, Suite No. 420, Houston, TX 77057; or Shriner's Hospital, 815 Market Street, Galveston, TX 77550.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home, 515 Boling Highway, Wharton, TX 77488, (979) 532-3410.

William Evans

Funeral services for William Hayward Evans, 47, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Stephen’s Missionary Baptist Church.

Mr. Evans died Dec. 17, 2003, after a sudden illness.

Martina Aguilar

Martina “Aunt Martha” Aguilar, age 92, of Wharton, died Tuesday Aug. 17, 2004, in a local hospital. She was born on Oct. 15, 1911, in Houston, the daughter of the late Gavino Aguilar and Luisa Molina Aguilar.

Ms. Aguilar was a homemaker and a lifelong resident of Wharton. She was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Ms. Aguilar will always be remembered as a very loving, caring, adorable person, who was full of love.

Funeral mass services was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Wednesday evening at the Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include her niece, Minerva Munoz and husband, Joe of Wharton, and their son, Jeffrey of Austin; and her family pet, Macy; niece, Victoria Zavala of Galveston; nephews, Charlie Aguilar of Houston, Louis Gutierrez of Houston and Felipe Gutierrez of Aransas Pass; and great-nephews, Anthony Aguilar of Houston and Joseph Aguilar of Houston. She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Pallbearers were Bardo Martinez, Joe Munoz, Lester Paredes, Wes Guerra, Louis Gutierrez and Daimus Lopez.

Honorary pallbearers were Dr. James Tran, Dr. Keith Dowell and the Gulf Coast Medical Center nursing staff who assisted in her care.
