Helen Maclin

Funeral services for Helen Stoppenhagen Maclin, 82, of Stanton, Tenn., were held Dec. 22 at Brownsville Funeral Home in Brownsville, Tenn. Burial followed in Stanton Cemetery.

Mrs. Maclin died Dec. 19, 2002, at Baptist Memorial Hospital. She was born Feb. 8, 1920.

She was a homemaker and active in the community. Mrs. Maclin was a graduate of Wharton High School.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lancelot M. Maclin; her parents, and two brothers.

She is survived by two sons, Glenn M. Maclin of Stanton and William H. Maclin of Bartlett; a daughter, Martha Carol Maclin Hechinger of Memphis; sister, Doris S. Talafuse of Wharton; three brothers, Ed F. Stoppenhagen of Richardson, Raymond Stoppenhagen of Houston and Rev. Norman W. Stoppenhagen of Downey, Calif.; aunts: Elsie W. Brown and Lydia S. Wuthrich, both of Wharton and Virginia H. Wuthrich of Rosenberg; five grandchildren and a great-grandson.

Pallbearers were her nephews, Harold Walker, Carl Stoppenhagen, Danny Stoppenhagen and Cecil Hart; and friends Billy Martin and Pete Wasmund.

The family requests that memorials be sent to Immanuel Lutheran Church or Stanton Preservation & Trust Fund.

Pete Wilson

Thornton Evan “Pete” Wilson died Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2003, at his home after an extended illness. Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 3, 2003 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Donnie Melton, Rev. Mack Mathis and Rev. Orville Roberts officiating. Interment followed in Wharton City Cemetery at the Wilson family plot.

Mr. Wilson was born Sept. 19, 1919, in Navasota, the son of the late Clara Augusta Lum Wilson and Henry Evan Wilson Jr. The family moved to Wharton when he was one year old and has resided here since that time. His nickname of “Pete” was acquired as an infant.

He attended Wharton schools and graduated from Allen Academy in Bryan. He attended Texas A&M University prior to entering the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. He served in the North Africa Theater until the close of hostilities in November of 1945. Mr. Wilson owned a feed store from 1945-1959 and later operated a mobile milling service for ranchers in the area. He was with the Wharton Independent School District for 10 years after selling the feed store and milling service.
He was married to Mary Kaye Northrup of Columbus, April 11, 1943, and two children were born to the union, Patricia Ann Wilson Crosby and Henry Evan Wilson II. Mr. Wilson was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Board of Ushers and various committees. He helped organize the Junior Chamber of Commerce, where he served as secretary. Mr. Wilson was also a member of the Lions Club and many organizations before prior to working for W.I.S.D Basically he was a family man where his philosophy was “Faith, Family and Friends.” He was quiet by nature with high morals and integrity.

Mr. Wilson is survived by his wife of 59 years, Mary Kaye Wilson; his children, Patricia Ann Wilson Crosby and husband, John E. Crosby III of Houston and Henry Evan “Duke” Wilson II of Hurst; four grandchildren, John M. Crosby and wife, Laurie, Cathe Crosby Aguirre and husband, Fernando, Cindy Crosby Witt and husband, Colin, and Russell Evan Wilson; five great grandchildren, Kaylie Crosby, Austin Evan Crosby, John Reagan Crosby, Courtney Witt and Mia Aguirre; and a brother, Thurman N. Wilson of Wharton. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Horace Wilson and Harry Wilson, and his sister, Mary Lee Stevens.

Pallbearers were Horace Earl Wilson, William Neal Wilson, Frank Shannon Jr., Frank Shannon III, Paul Dayvault Shannon, Dr. John E. Martin Jr., Richard Scott Martin, Jack Thornton and M.J. “Pic” Dupuy.

Honorary pallbearers were Peter G. Brooks, Robert Kleas, Frank “Jiggs” Maerz, Bob Ladd, Lawrence Brock, Paul Francoeur, Tom Hudgins, Dr. Herman Wolff and Louis Preisler.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to the Child Development Center (the former Jack & Jill School), First Baptist Church, 507 N. Fulton, Wharton, Texas 77488 or the charity of personal choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Frank Sagala

Memorial services for Frank Gonzales Sagala, 84, were held Friday at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Sagala died March 10, 2003, in Houston. He was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Wharton.

Survivors include wife of 60 years, Betty; sister, Lupe Ochoa; brother, Charlie; sons, Darrell, Duane and Dwight; two grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Frank Shannon

Memorial Services for Frank A. Shannon, age 76, of Wharton, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Mr. Shannon died March 13, 2003, in Houston following a sudden illness.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to the charity of personal choice, St. Thomas Episcopal School or St. Thomas Book of Remembrance, 207 Bob-O-Link, Wharton, Texas 77488.

Cam Graves

Funeral services for Jon Cameron “Cam” Graves, 47, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Holcomb of First United Methodist Church in East Bernard officiating. Burial will follow in the Methodist Cemetery in East Bernard.

Mr. Graves died March 14, 2004. He was born Aug. 31, 1956, in East Bernard to Polly Novosad Graves of East Bernard and the late Willie Graves.

He was the manager of the Tavener Gin and a member of First United Methodist Church in East Bernard. Mr. Graves was also a member of the East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department, Wharton County Farm Bureau and the Bimbo Cookers.

Survivors include wife, April Powers Graves of East Bernard; mother, Polly Novosad Graves of East Bernard; daughters, Alexis Renee Graves and Callie Ann Graves, both of East Bernard; son, Garrett Neal Graves of East Bernard; sister, Melinda Sue Graves of Richmond; brothers, William DeWitt Graves of East Bernard, Russell David Graves of El Campo and Robert Joel Graves of Lissie. He was preceded in death by his father and a nephew, Blake Graves.

If desiring, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in East Bernard; East Bernard Volunteer Fire Department; or Cam Graves Children’s Fund, First Prosperity Bank in East Bernard.

Dora Guttenberger

Dora Bockhorn Guttenberger, age 86, passed away after a lengthy illness on March 15, 2004, at Avalon Place in Wharton.

She was born on Nov. 2, 1917, to Dorothea Meier and Edward Bockhorn in Needville. Dora was baptized Dec. 25, 1917, at Salem Lutheran Church at Welcome by Rev. J. Appel and confirmed Oct. 23, 1932, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Rosenberg by Rev. H. Probst.
Mrs. Guttenberger was united in marriage to Edwin “Slim” Guttenberger on Oct. 28, 1937, at St. Paul Lutheran in Rosenberg by Rev. H. Probst.

They were members of Immanuel’s Church in Needville from 1941 until 1951 before joining St. Paul’s Lutheran in Wharton, in which they served together until the death of Edwin on July 15, 1984. Mrs. Guttenberger remained a faithful member until her health failed. Over the years at St. Paul’s, she taught Sunday School, served on the Altar Guild and took part in the Women of the Church. She particularly liked the making of the Chrismons project for the Christmas Tree.

Dora and Edwin lived in Needville on a farm when they married but in 1940 they left Needville and spent short times in La Ward, Louise and East Bernard before settling in Wharton in October of 1943. She was a housewife, mother and seamstress until 1950, when she went to work at Rugeley & Blasingame Hospital. In 1951, she enrolled in Nursing School at Wharton County Junior College and became an LVN in 1952. Mrs. Guttenberger continued her nursing career at the hospital for many years and in later years served as Wharton County Mental Health Nurse and did some private duty nursing.

After retiring in 1979, she and “Slim” bought a motor home and enjoyed going camping in the area and some travel. They were members of several of the Good Sam camping clubs where she enjoyed crafts and visiting with the ladies and “Slim” would play music with the men.
After the illness and death of “Slim” in July of 1984, she spent some time visiting and enjoying handwork until her health began to fail. She entered Avalon Place in Feb. of 2001, when her health needed round the clock care. Even in the years of bad health, she enjoyed hearing what the grandchildren and great-grandchildren were doing and liked to hear about old friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Edwin “Slim” Guttenberger; her parents, Dora and Ed Bockhorn; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Konrad Guttenberger; brother-in-laws, Arthur Schulze, Raymond Klawitter and Gus Eismann; and sister-in-law Katherine and husband “Buddy” Zwahr.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 18, 2004, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wharton with Rev. Paul Kersten officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton. Friends may call for visitation from 5 until 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, March 17, at Wharton Funeral Home, with family greeting friends from 5 until 7 p.m.
She is survived by daughter, Eddie Faye Ludwig and husband, Harvey and by son, George Ray Guttenberger and wife, Mary Helen. Seven grandchildren survive: Julie Claydon and husband, Frank, Laurie Speck and husband, Mike, Carl Ludwig and wife, Jill, Kristie Roberts and husband, Troy, Kerrie Cunningham and husband, Allen, Guy Guttenberger and wife, Coi, and Kelly Guttenberger. Twelve great grandchildren and two step-grandchildren survive: Jonathan, Jeffrey and Jennifer Claydon, Colby and Carson Speck, Taylor Ludwig, Sophie, Anna and Chloe Roberts, Alyx and Zye Cunningham, Dalaney Guttenberger and Matt and Allison Holland. Three sisters survive: Ida Schulze, formerly of Richmond and now at Avalon Place, Freda Klawitter and Willie Mae Tielke and husband, Melvin of Needville; and two sister-in-laws, Ella Eismann of Needville and Irma Beeson and husband, Howard of Enterprise, AL. Numerous nephews, nieces and cousins also survive.

Pallbearers are her grandsons, Frank Claydon, Mike Speck, Carl Ludwig, Troy Roberts, Allen Cunningham, Guy Guttenberger and Kelly Guttenberger.

Honorary pallbearers were her nephews and nieces, whom she loved deeply.

Doris Kohleffel

Funeral services for Doris Lois Baca Kohleffel of Needville will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Needville United Methodist Church with Rev. Torn Bain officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Garmany & Carden Funeral Chapel in Needville.

Mrs. Kohleffel died March 15, 2004, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond. She was born June 21, 1929, in Wharton to the late Adolph L. and Birdie Allie Miller Baca.

She graduated from Wharton High School. On June 15, 1950, she married Leroy Kohleffel at the First United Methodist Church in Wharton. For 28 years Mrs. Koleffel worked as a secretary for the Needville Independent School District before retiring in 1992. She was a life member of the Needville PTA, a member of Needville United Methodist Church, the Smart Club and the Bunco Babes.

Survivors include husband of 53 years, Leroy Kohleffel of Needville; children and spouses, Karen and Andrew Bohac of Needville; Kerry W. and Rebecca Kohleffel, Charles A. and Sandy Kohleffel; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Evelyn Hannusch; brothers-in-law, Melvin Hannusch and Oscar Kohleffel Jr.; and step-mother, Lydia Baca.

Georgia Urbanovsky

Georgia Louise Urbanovsky, age 68, of Boling died Friday March 12, 2004, in a Houston hospital following a prolonged illness. She was born on Nov. 10, 1935, in El Maton, the daughter of William John Hickl Sr. and Marie Nemec Hickl.

Mrs. Urbanovsky has been a resident of Boling since 1968. She married Merlin John Urbanovsky Sr. on Feb. 18, 1958, in Blessing and he preceded her in death on Dec. 27, 1998.
She was also preceded in death by her father.

Mrs. Urbanovsky was a homemaker and an active member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boling and the K.J.Z.T. She always took time to check on friends and neighbors who were ill.

A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday evening, March 14, 2004, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia Ann and Sid Chaka of Katy; Sons and daughter-in law, Merlin John and Diana Urbanovsky of Richmond, and Tommy Urbanovsky of Wharton; sisters, Ann Bilicek of Taiton, Marianne Holliday of Tallahassee, Fla., Elizabeth Taylor of West Columbia and Mildred Borak of Sugar Land; brothers, William Hickl Jr. of Stafford, Charles Hickl, Frank Hickl and Anthony Hickl, all of Lake Jackson; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Madeline and Gene Schumaker of Wharton; and grandchildren, Jason Chaka, Kevin Chaka, Paige Urbanovsky and Kristin Urbanovsky.

Pallbearers were William Hickl Jr., Charles Hickl, Frank Hickl, Anthony Hickl, Ted Taylor, Kenneth Holliday, Donald Borak and Jerry Bilicek.

Honorary Pallbearers were her grandsons, Jason and Kevin Chaka, and all the members of her Bible study group in Boling.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Elinda Wetz

Funeral services for Elinda Faye Wetz, 60, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Wetz passed away March 15, 2004, in Houston.

Enoch Gillis

Funeral services for Enoch George Gillis, 58, of Houston, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at Camp Zion-Rising Star United Baptist Church with Rev. R. Hatton officiating. Burial will follow in Jerusalem Cemetery.

Mr. Gillis died Aug. 13, 2004, at his residence. He was born June 18, 1946, in Wharton to Roosevelt and Alberta Myers Gillis.

Survivors include sons, Eric Gillis of Richmond, Brian Gillis and Christopher Gillis, both of Houston; daughter, Tiffany Gillis of Houston; brothers, Thomas Gillis of Houston, Emanuel Gillis of Pearland, Michael Gillis, Herbert Gillis and Dwight Gillis, all of Wharton; sisters, Marion McCloud of San Francisco, Calif., and Mara Gillis of Houston; and one grandchild.

Alvin Howard

Alvin Louie Howard, age 73, of Wharton, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. He was born on Jan. 23, 1931, in Sealy, Tthe son of the late Charlie Howard and Mary Svec Howard Caletka.

Mr. Howard has been a resident of Wharton for the past 40 years. He married Mabel Ann Krancher on March 6, 1957, in Rosenberg. Mr. Howard worked as a brick mason for many years until his retirement in 1990. He was Presbyterian by faith and enjoyed gardening and raising and caring for animals.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wharton with Mickey Reynolds officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Mabel Howard of Wharton; daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Ronnie Boedeker of Wharton; son and daughter in law, Charles and Maria Howard of Brigantine, N.J.; daughter-in-law, Sharon Bemis of Rosenberg; sister, Vera Twardowski of Sealy; brother, W.C. Howard of El Campo; grandchildren, Daron Boedeker, Ryan Boedeker, Sonny Howard and Amber Boedeker; step-grandson, Nicholas Nistico. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Veseley.

Pallbearers were Daron Boedeker, Ryan Boedeker, Sonny Howard, Ricky Howard, Chris Howard and Scott Howard.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family request memorials to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 325 N. East Avenue, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.
