Lorene Love

Lorene Love, age 86, of Wharton, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, in Avalon Place Nursing Home following an extended illness. She was born on Oct. 20, 1917, in Tanglewood, Lee County, the daughter of the late Marcus Wesley Owens and Vida Mae Provence Owens.

Mrs. Love had been a resident of Wharton since 1977 and was a member of Christ Is Life Church. She married John Cargill Rochelle in October of 1939 in Houston and he preceded her in death in November of 1966. Mrs. Love worked as a checker in grocery stores for many years and later enjoyed babysitting for many families. She enjoyed working in her church. Mrs. Love was preceded in death by eight brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Orville Roberts of First Baptist Church of Wharton officiating. Graveside services and burial will follow at 3 p.m. today, Tuesday, at San Jacinto Memorial Park Cemetery in Houston.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jo Ann and Roy Taylor of Wharton; granddaughter, Suzanne Rochelle Taylor of Houston; sister, Louise McKnight of San Antonio; brothers, Archie Owens of Houston and Jerry Owens of Rockdale.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, P.O. Box 4486, Houston, TX 77210 — 4486.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Gregory Samora

Graveside services for Gregory “Goyo” Samora, 63, of Wharton, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Samora died Aug. 15, 2004, in a Wharton hospital after a brief illness. He was born May 26, 1941, in Wharton, the son of the late Ramon Samora and Louisa Longoria Samora.

He had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was Catholic by Faith. He worked as a construction laborer most of his life. He was a former amateur boxer.

Survivors include sisters, Patsy Pena, Lupe Sedillo, Mary Louise Garza and Erminda Cordero, all of Wharton, and Isabel Cordero of Deer Park; brother, John Samora of Wharton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lee Langston
Funeral services for Lee Langston, 91, of Glen Flora, will be held at 11 p.m. today, Saturday, at Mount Vernon Baptist Church with Rev. C.E. McWashington officiating. Burial will follow in Camp Zion Cemetery.
Mr. Langston died July 30, 2002, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Jan. 11, 1911, in Ocilla, Ga., to Johnnie and Georgia Coleman Langston.
Survivors include wife, Cora Lee Bradshaw Langston of Glen Flora; daughters, Delores Aubrey of Houston, Velma Burrell of El Campo, Dorothy Brightman, Lee Ann Gullory and Veda Chambers all of Glen Flora; 2l grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and nine great- great-grandchildren.

Yvonne Morrison
Funeral services for Lillian Yvonne Morrison, 78, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Wharton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Wharton City Cemetery.
Friends may call for visitation after 6 p.m. Sunday at Wharton Funeral Home.

Lena Austin

Funeral services for Lena Cotton Austin, 85, of Eagle Lake, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Eagle Lake with Rev. T.E. Kuykendall officiating. Burial will follow in Elm Grove Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-9 p.m. Friday at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake or from 10 a.m. until service time at the church on Saturday.

Mrs. Austin died Sept. 7, 2002, at Rice Medical Center in Eagle Lake. She was born Sept. 22, 1916, to Johnny Cotton and Laura Glenn.

She was reared and attended school in Wharton. Mrs. Austin began her journey of faith at an early age as an active member of Union Baptist Church. She later moved to Houston and united with Christian Hope Baptist Church. Mrs. Austin led a career of service at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston for almost 20 years and was a member of Greater Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church of Eagle Lake. She married Curly Austin.

Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her parents; son, Clarence Austin; sisters, Odessa Franklin, Laurena Norman and Lou Minnie Gooden; step-brothers, Joe Gooden and M.L. Harris; half-brother, Lloyd Cotton; and half-sister, Willie M. Cotton.

Survivors include son, L.V. Austin of Houston; sisters and brother-in-law, Nina Mae Hatton of Eagle Lake, Doris and Tommie Sims of Eagle Lake, Elizabeth McAfee of Eagle Lake, Alberta Davidson of Houston; half-sister Pearle Bennett of El Campo; step-sister, Jessie Bell Harris of Garwood; brothers and sisters-in-law, Tom and Helen Gooden of Houston, Willie and Dorothy Gooden of El Campo, Tommie Charles and Vernell Gooden of Chapel Hill; daughter-in-law, Ella Austin of Houston; one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Mansfield Parson

Funeral services for Rev. Mansfield Parson, 66, are pending at Matthews Funeral Home. Rev. Parson died Sept. 8, 2002, at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Daniel Zahradnik

Daniel Ray Zahradnik Sr., age 59, of Wharton died Thursday morning, Sept. 5, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness. He was born on May 2, 1943, in Wharton the son of the late August and Mary Matula Zahradnik.

Mr. Zahradnik had been a lifelong resident of Wharton and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. He married Janie Marie Bearrick on Jan. 25, 1969, in Wharton. Mr. Zahradnik was employed as a concrete superintendent for Uticon Construction Company in Rosenberg for the past 10 years. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam Conflict. Mr. Zahradnik enjoyed woodworking, building birdhouses, windmills and whirligigs. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
A rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Friday at the Chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton with military honors provided by American Legion Post No. 87 of Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Janie Zahradnik of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Denise and Cary Abbott, Theresa Zahradnik and April Zahradnik, all of Wharton, and Janie and Kevin Schmidt of Cat Springs; sons and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Kelley Zahradnik Jr. of Orchard and Kevin Zahradnik of Wharton; sisters; Mary Ann Gaines of Huntsville, Elsie Loesch of Rosenberg, Agnes Dunn and Leona Orsak, both of Wharton; brother, Marvin Zahradnik, August Zahradnik and Edward Zahradnik, all of Wharton, and Anton Zahradnik of Sugar Land; four grandchildren, Emily Abbott and Matthew Abbott, Skyler Zahradnik and Kenzie Zahradnik.

Pallbearers were Ronnie Lenox, Joe Morton, Adolph Rachunek, Bennie Husinecky Jr., Charles Roberts and Johnny Byrd.

Honorary pallbearers were his grandchildren, sons-in-law, his brothers and sisters.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Jeronimo Gaona

Jeronimo R. Gaona, age 74, of Wharton, passed away Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, in Wharton. He was born July 20, 1928, in Goliad, the son of Toribio and Rita Rodriguez Gaona. He married Concepcion Martinez on Oct. 1, 1953, in Wharton. He worked as a machine operator for El Campo Aluminum from 1969 until his retirement in 1993. He was a lifelong resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Camel Catholic Church.

A rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at the Wharton Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass was held Saturday, Nov. 9, at 3 p.m. at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Father Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Concepcion Gaona of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Antonia and Harold Matula of Wharton, Lydia Gaona of Wharton, Victoria Ocanas of Wharton, Amalia Gaona and Randy Montez of Wharton, Susie and Marion Garcia of Wharton, Diane and Edward Garcia of Dallas, Janie and Martin Ramirez III of Wharton and Olga and Gilbert Reyna of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Jesse and Maria Gaona of Wharton, Florentino and Joann Gaona of El Campo, Phillip Gaona of Wharton, George Gaona of Wharton, and James and Paulina Gaona of Wharton; sisters, Lupe Ramos of Wharton and Margaret Rodriguez of Wharton; brothers: Gumesindo “Shorty” Gaona of Wharton and Jose Angel Gaona of El Campo; 24 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by a son, Jacinto Gaona, his parents and brothers, Marin Gaona, Sixto Gaona and Johnny Gaona Sr.

Pallbearers were Manuel Rodriguez, Marin Canales, Chevelo Tovar, Adan Canales, Oscar Gaona, Alex Gaona, Toby Gaona, Danny Gaona and Ruben Gaona.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the charity of personal choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Jennifer Hermis

Funeral services for Jennifer L. Hermis, 46, of Guy, will be held today, Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2002 at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard with Father Don Ruppert officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard. Visitation was held Tuesday as was a rosary service at Davis Funeral Home in East Bernard.

Mrs. Hermis died Nov. 10, 2002, in Richmond after a long battle with cancer. She was born Oct. 13, 1956, at Ellington Air Force Base in Houston to Thomas L. and Laurell Palen Hennigan. She has gone to her final resting place feeling no more pain, only happiness.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas L. and Laurell Hennigan; grandparents, Edward and Gladys Acker Hennigan and Herbert Jeter and Lucille Palen; her aunt, Rosemary Fuedo; her uncle, John Edward Hennigan and her brother-in-law, Harvey Hermis.

Survivors include her husband of 15 years, Wayne Alan Hermis of Guy; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice F. David Griffin of Porter, Rebecca Geishaker Chlebus and husband Jim of Reno, Nev., and Jeanette M. and Kenneth Kresta of East Bernard; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew and Vicki Geishaker of Augusta, Ma.; in-laws, Frank and Mary Hermis of Bedias, Wallis and Mary Ann Jones of Thompsons; and numerous nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 570127, Houston, Texas 77257.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, 3900 B.F. Terry Boulevard, Rosenberg, Texas 77471.

LeeRoy Lundquist

LeeRoy Louis Lundquist, 71, of Garwood, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002. He was born July 3, 1931, in Garwood to the late David Lundquist and Hulda Olson Lundquist.

He was a graduate of Wharton County Junior College and the University of Texas. Mr. Lundquist was a former member of the Garwood Lions Club and was chosen to receive the El Campo Jaycee’s Outstanding Young Farmer of the Year Award in 1965. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and member of Christ Lutheran Church in El Campo. Mr. Lundquist was a self-employed farmer/rancher and had worked for Muegge Real Estate in Wharton.

Survivors include wife, Peggy Marek Lundquist of Garwood; daughter, Cheri Lunquist Muegge of Wharton and husband Eric Muegge; sons, Todd Randolph Lundquist of Baytown and wife Becky Lundquist; sisters, Margaret Montello of El Campo and Lillian Parolini of Hanover, Calif.; and five grandchildren, Lyle, Mason and Layne Muegge of Wharton and Brooke and Presley Lunquist of Baytown. He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Hulda Lundquist.

Visitation began Sunday at Triska Funeral Home in El Campo. Funeral services were held Monday at Christ Lutheran Church in El Campo with Rev. Art Weiss officiating. Burial followed in Garden of Memorials Cemetery in El Campo.

Victor Marak

Funeral services for Victor Marak, 82, of Schulenburg, will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, at Kubena Funeral Home in Hallettsville with Father Royce Hughes officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Creek Cemetery in Vienna.

Mr. Marak died Nov. Nov. 10, 2002. He was born Dec. 26, 1919, in Lavaca County to the late Frank and Mary Smolik Marak.

He was a veteran of World War II and member of the American Legion Post in East Bernard. He married Mamie Rae Whitley on Nov. 26, 1946, and she preceded him in death on May 31, 1998. Mr. Marak was preceded in death by his wife, parents and three brothers, Joe, Frank and George Marak.

Survivors include one step-daughter; sisters, Marie Naiser and Albina Boehm, both of Schulenburg; sisters-in-law, Helen Marak of Schulenburg, Mildred Marak of East Bernard and Jacklyn Marak Bartosh of Weimar; and six step-grandchildren.

Marshall Melton

Marshall Lampert Melton, 68, of Wharton, died Nov. 8, 2002, after a long illness secondary to Post-Polio Syndrome. He was the only son of the late Vernon Alonzo Melton and Oramae Lampert Melton.

He attended Wharton High School and graduated from Allen military Academy in Bryan. Mr. Melton was employed as a maintenance technician for Richmond State School in Richmond Texas for 15 years before his retirement in 1995. He married Jo Ann Chancey on Dec. 24, 1985, in East Bernard. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Wharton, a former volunteer for the Wharton County Youth Fair and a former member of the Civil Air Patrol. Mr. Melton enjoyed traveling, camping, and looked forward to trips to visit relatives and friends out of state.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at Wharton Funeral Home with Paul Jones officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Melton of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Marsha and Dudley Wooten and Pam and Robert Hubenak of Wharton and Debbie Cherry of Goldsboro, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, June and Johnnie Cook of Wharton; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Texas Polio Survivors’ Association, P.O. Box 35688, Houston, Texas 77235.

Frank Michulka

Funeral services for Frank G. Michulka, 83, of East Bernard were held on Monday at Holy Cross Catholic Church with Rev. Don Ruppert celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Burial was in Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in East Bernard.

Mr. Michulka died Nov. 8, 2002, in Wharton. He was born to Josef and Frances Sula Michulka in East Bernard. Mr. Michulka was reared in East Bernard and attended Holy Cross School in East Bernard. On May 13, 1946, Mr. Michulka was joined in marriage to the former Vlasta Ovesny at Holy Cross Catholic Church in East Bernard. He served his country during World War II in the United Sates Army. Mr. Michulka worked most of his life as a farmer. He was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, American Legion and a 50-year member of S.P.J.S.T.

He is survived by his wife, Vlasta Michulka of East Bernard; daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and William Jalowy of Wallis and Lorraine and Wayne Chumchal of East Bernard; sons and daughters-in-law, Daniel and Cheryl Michulka of Austin, Stanley and Judith Michulka of East Bernard and Michael Michulka of San Marcos; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Josef and Frances Michulka, 20 brothers and sisters and son, Frankie Michulka.

Nina Northington

Nina Lee Lane Northington, age 85, of Wharton, passed away Friday, Nov. 8, 2002, in Wharton after a brief illness. She was born Dec. 20, 1916 in Lane City, the daughter of the late Thomas William and Nina Dayvault Lane.

She was a 1934 graduate of Wharton High School and attended Sam Houston State Teachers College and Texas Women’s Institute in Denton. She married Dr. Harold M. Northington on Dec. 11, 1946, in Houston. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Women’s Circle. She was also a member of Wharton Country Club, various bridge clubs and the Ladies Auxiliary at Caney Valley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Northington was a lifelong resident of Wharton County, having lived in Lane City and Wharton.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at First United Methodist Church with the Reverend Paul Thomasson, officiating. Burial followed in the Northington Family Cemetery in Egypt.

Survivors include her husband; Dr. Harold M. Northington of Wharton; daughter and sons-in-law, Ginger and Burt Hooton of San Antonio and Dr. Mike Connelly of Houston; sons and daughters-in-law, Mac and Carla Northington of Boerne, Tom and Kathy Northington of Kerrville and Guy and Cindy Northington of Houston; grandchildren, Tom and Kristan Northington, Mona and Perry George, McCann and Margye Northington, David Northington, Gene Hooton, Lane Hooton, Will Northington, Wes Northington, Ginny Northington, Stacey Connelly, Patrick Connelly and Mac Connelly; and two great-grandchildren, Shelton Northington and Mac Northington. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Gay Northington Connelly, on May 12, 2001; three sisters, Dorothy Lane, Helen Lane and Eloise Connoly; and a brother, Col. Tom Lane.

Pallbearers were Tom Northington, McCann Northington, David Northington, Gene Hooton, Will Northington, Wes Northington, Stacey Connelly, Patrick Connelly and Mac Connelly.
