Beatrice Pina

Beatrice Bermudes Pina, age 36, of Wharton passed away Saturday, Nov. 9, in a Houston hospital. She was born June 20, 1966, in Newgulf, the daughter of the late Benito G. Bermudes and Antonia Horta. She graduated from Boling High School in 1986. She married Edgar Pina on March 3, 2001, in Boling. She was a former child care provider with the Christ Is Life Church. She was a resident of Boling until 1997 when she moved to Wharton. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Mrs. Pina loved to write poetry and sing.

A rosary service was recited Monday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel. A funeral mass was held on Tuesday, Nov. 12, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church with Father Joe Vrana officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Edgar Pina of Wharton; mother, Antonia Horta of Wharton; sisters, Berta Bermudes of Wharton and Belle Hernandez and husband, Francisco, of Boling; brother, Benito Bermudes Jr. and wife, Cynthia, of Wharton; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ruben Pina of Port Lavaca; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ceasar and Alicia Pina of Port Lavaca; nieces and nephews, Jose Alvino Hernandez, Juan Benito Hernandez, Jerome Anthony Garcia, Victoria Nicole Bermudes, Brittany Renee Garcia, Brianna Elaine Garcia, Mia Faith Hernandez, Maya Hope Hernandez and Ceasar Allen Pina. She was preceded in death by her father, Benito G. Bermudes; sister, Elida Bermudes, and nephew, Adam Bermudes.

Pallbearers were Ralph Castro, Bryan Powell, James Mark Raymond Sr., Andy Reyes Jr., Ceasar Pina and Francisco Hernandez.

Honorary Pallbearers were Darrell Hodges, Jose Benito Hernandez, Ignacio Bermudes, Jerome Anthony Garcia and Jose Alvino Hernandez.

If desiring, memorials may be sent to American Association of Kidney Patients, 100 South Ashley Drive, Suite 280, Tampa, Fla. 33602.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Sylvia Poessel

Funeral services for Sylvia Poessel, 84, of Beasley, were held Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Beasley with Rev. Henry C. Rachunek celebrating the funeral mass and rite of committal. Visitation was held Monday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and there was also a parish rosary recited. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery in East Bernard.

Mrs. Poessel died Nov. 9, 2002, in Rosenberg. She was born in Moravia to Alfred Hajek and Agnes Chovanec. She was reared in the Moravia area and attended school there and at Schulenburg. She was a graduate of the University of Texas and was a Homemaking teacher in East Bernard and Shiner for many years. On Aug. 25, 1946, she married Frank G. Poessel in Moravia. Mrs. Poessel was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, baking kolaches for bazaars and bake sales and the St. Ann Altar Society.

Survivors include son, Frank G. Poessel Jr. of Beasley; brother and sister-in-laws, John Vacek of Dickerson, Gertrude Hillman of East Bernard, Mary Malek of Edna, Betty Kopecky of Wesleco, Tillie and Joe Dusek of East Bernard and William and Lillie Poessel of Fannet. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Agnes Hajek; husband, Frank G. Poessel Sr.; and sister, Mildred Vacek.

Memorial contributions can be made to the St. Wenceslaus Building Fund.

Jonah Svoboda

Graveside funeral services for Jonah Sepeda Svoboda, infant son of Dewayne Edward and Marina Sepeda Svoboda will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Jonah was born on Nov. 10, 2002, in Wharton and died on Nov. 10, 2002.

Survivors include mother, Marina Sepeda; father, Dewayne Edward Svoboda; brother, Alonzo Rene Svoboda; grandparents, Maria Svoboda and Edward Svoboda, all of El Campo, Rosa Rodriguez of Wharton and Victor Sepeda of Lubbock; great-grandparents, Herbert Garcia of Hungerford, Guillerma Sepeda of Lubbock and Adelina Morales of Goliad.

Funeral services are under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Joseph Auer

Graveside services for Joseph Cecil Auer, 79, of Victoria and formerly of El Campo, were held Tuesday at Oaklawn Memorial Park Cemetery in El Campo with Rev. Rick DuBroc officiating.

Mr. Auer died June 29, 2003. He was born June 28, 1924, in Vienna to the late Joseph Julius and Lola Clark Auer.

He worked as a carpenter and was employed by C&C Farm Maintenance.

Survivors include wife, Helen Auer of Lake Jackson; daughters, Gennivie Krenek of Boling, Hattie Woodburn of Lake Jackson, Ruby Willis of Lake Jackson and Doris Jo Kalmus of Hallettsville; sons, Herman Allen Auer of Santa Fe and Joe Cecil Auer Jr. of Splendora; half-sister, Evelyn Boone of Hillsboro; brothers, Carl Auer of Fresno, Calif., and Robert Auer of Danbury; 17 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

W.I. Baird

Funeral services for W.I. “Doc” Baird, 71, of Eagle Lake, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Dave King officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Mr. Baird died June 30, 2003, at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital in Houston after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 19, 1931, at McDow Switch in Wharton County to Wilburn Terrell Baird and Lilly Mae Willtrout.

He attended schools in Bonus and Crescent and was a plant superintendent and plant foreman for Tenneco for 38 years and then Enron Corporation for three years before retirement. Mr. Baird married Frances Baird March 1, 1951, at the Wharton County Courthouse. He was a member of Eagle Lake United Methodist Church and raised cattle.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Frances Baird of Eagle Lake; daughter and son-in-law, Lana and Elroy Adamek of Pasadena; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Carolyn Baird of Eagle Lake, Mark and Debbie Baird of Pittsburg, Pa., and Stephen and Amy Baird of LaPorte; sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and James Davis of Temple; five grandchildren and other relatives.

Pearline Green

Funeral services for Pearline Green, 64, of Wharton, will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. James Baptist Church with Rev. B.B. Willis officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday.

Mrs. Green died June 27, 2003, at her residence. She was born Dec. 9, 1938, in Wharton to Sun and Pearline Francis Thomas.

Survivors include mother, Pearline Francis of Wharton; sons, Larry James Thomas of Cuero, Charles Lee Thomas, Bennie Louis Thomas and Connell Green, all of Wharton; daughters, Arma Lee Dawson of Rosenberg, Leona Faye Green of Wharton; brothers, Robert Williams of Houston, Raymond Shanklin and Oscar Williams, both of Wharton; sisters, Shirley Austin of Texas City and Corine Jones of Wharton; 15 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Mattie Justice

Funeral services for Mattie Lee Justice, 72, of Matagorda, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, at United Methodist Church with Rev. Francis Fogger officiating. Burial will be in Matagorda.

Mrs. Justice died June 29, 2003, at her residence. She was born May 31, 1931, in West Columbia to the late Roy Hoot and Leola Kaminski.

She married J.T. Hoot. Mrs. Justice was a housewife and Methodist by faith.

Survivors include husband, J.T. Hoot; daughters, Kathy Livingston, Jonie Beamish and Starla Justice; sons, John Walton and Roy Justice; sisters, Diana Ellerman and Ruth Holtman; brother, Frank Hoot; and eight grandchildren.

Johnny Salazar

Funeral services for Johnny Salazar, 58, of Wharton, were held Tuesday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Rosary services were held Monday in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home.

Mr. Salazar died June 28, 2003, in a Houston hospital. He was born on Oct. 20, 1944, in Brownsville, the son of the late Francisco and Candida Aleman Salazar.

He married Dolores Valles on Feb. 14, 1968, in Wharton. Mr. Salazar was employed by Wharton County Precinct No. 1 for the past 19 years. He was a longtime resident of Wharton and a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Dolores Salazar of Wharton; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Shannon Salazar of Katy, John Anthony Salazar of Katy and Kenneth and Lucinda Salazar of LaPorte; daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Steve Kimbell of LaPorte; sisters, Sara Cantu of Houston, Francis Llanes, Ramona Llanes and Lupe Cordero, all of Wharton; brothers, Pete Salazar of Wharton, Henry Salazar of Houston, Steve Salazar, Pablo Salazar and Paul Salazar, all of Wharton; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Manuel and Lupe Salazar.

Leslie Singer

Funeral services for Leslie J. Singer, 63, of Charlotte, N.C., will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ross Prairie Brethren Church Cemetery with Rev. Milton Maly officiating.

Mr. Singer died June 17, 2003, in Charlotte, N.C. He was born in Taylor on Aug. 20, 1931.
He was reared in Boling and attended Boling Independent School District schools. Mr. Singer worked for Bank of America in Charlotte, N.C.

Mr. Singer is survived by his wife, Karin; two sons, Eric Singer and Neal Singer; one brother, Frank Singer; one sister; Lou Ann Matsumoto; and four grandchildren.

Clifton Spears

Funeral services for Clifton Spears Sr., 65, of Kendleton will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Little Zion Baptist Church with Rev.C. Spears officiating. Burial will follow in Powell Point Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 6-9 p.m. Saturday at the church. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Spears died June 30, 2003, at Polly Ryon Memorial Hospital in Richmond. He was born March 23, 1938, in East Bernard to Clarence and Mary Robinson Spears Sr.

Survivors include wife, Emma Jean Steward Spears of Kendleton; sons, Clifton Spears Jr. and Carl Spears, both of Midland; daughters, Carol Jean Spears, Colleen Dickerson and Christiana Spears, all of Midland, and Carrie Goodjoint of Rosenberg; brothers, Rev. Clay Spears of Wallis, Calvin Spears of Kendleton and Carvell Spears of Hungerford; sisters, Cassie Robinson of Kendleton, Chris Spears of Rosenberg, Clarice Spears of East Bernard and Irva Lee Upson of Eagle Lake; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

Lottie Crofton

Funeral services for Lottie M. Crofton, 76, of Portland, were held Tuesday at St. Andrew’s by the Sea Catholic Church. Burial followed in Zapata County Cemetery. A rosary was recited Monday night.

Mrs. Crofton died Dec. 6, 2003, in a Portland nursing center. She was born March 5, 1927, in Wharton, to Eugene H. and Emma Aleen Lyons.

She had been a resident of the coastal bend area most of her life. Mrs. Crofton was also a former resident of Wharton and Zapata. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Crofton; a daughter, Barbara Gayle; and her mother, Emma Aleen Lyons.

Survivors include sons and daughter-in-law, Thomas Edward and Karen Crofton Jr. of Friendswood and Patrick Lee Crofton of Saudi Arabia; daughters and sons-in-law, Dottie Ann and Bryan Wellbrock of Burlison, Tenn., Lottie Mae Crofton of Corpus Christi and Peggy Lou and Les Hyder of Corpus Christi; brother, Bobby R, Lyons of Houston; sister, Eugenia Jean Newlin of Wharton; 9 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Vista Care Hospice, 5151 S. Staples No. 305, Corpus Christi, TX 78411.

Adolf Sabrsula

Funeral services for Adolf Joe “A. J.” Sabrsula, 60, of Magnolia, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Magnolia Church of Christ. Burial will be in Klein Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Magnolia Church of Christ.

Mr. Sabrsula died Dec. 7, 2003, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in The Woodlands after being in an accident Friday. He was born in Wharton on Nov. 23, 1943, to the late Adolf and Ludmilla Sabrsula.

He lived in Magnolia and was a member of the Church of Christ. Mr. Sabrsula worked for the Spring Independent School District in the transportation department. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Anton Sabrsula; and sister, Betty Dry.

He is survived by his wife Nell Sabrsula; daughters and sons-in-law, Pamela Sabrsula of San Antonio, Evelyn and Robert Hill of Loga Vista, Cynthia and Keith Huddle of Pflugerville, Susan and David Crosby and Debbie and Kevin Haynie, all of Magnolia; sons and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mara Minshew of Navasota and Derral Minshew of Copperfield; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alfred and Ruth Sabrsula of Wharton, Paul Sabrsula of Simonton and Mae Sabrsula of Boling; sisters and brothers-in-law, Viola Kalina of New Gulf, Pauline and Julius Kalina of Wharton, Lillie and Melvin Kalina of Bastrop, Mary Ann and Billy Dorris of El Campo, Clara and Adolph Kutach of Wharton, Tracy and Preston of Edna; 12 grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mike Salas

Funeral services for Mike Salas, 57, of Pledger, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mr. Salas died Dec. 8, 2003, at Hermann Hospital.

Stephanie Sunderman

Funeral services for Stephanie Ann Sunderman, 48, of Eagle Lake, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at the chapel of Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Dave King officiating. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Mrs. Sunderman died Dec. 6, 2003, at her residence following a battle with leukemia. She was born July 31, 1955, in East Bernard to Lois Marguerite Cessna Naiser and Charles R. Naiser Sr.

She was a 1973 graduate of East Bernard High School, attended Wharton County Junior College for two years and earned her degree as a Registered Nurse in 1978 from the University of Houston Victoria College School of Nursing. Mrs. Sunderman served as school nurse for Rice Consolidated School District for the past four years and Lamar Consolidated School System in Richmond for 11 years prior. She was a member of the Eagle Lake Recreation Center, past president of the Women’s Golf Association and a member of the Eagle Lake United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sunderman was preceded in death by her father, Charles R. Naiser Sr., and mother-in-law, Elenor Dutcher Sunderman.
Survivors include her husband of 25 years, Glen Thomas Sunderman of Eagle Lake; mother and step-father, Lois N. and Harrison Stafford of East Bernard; son, Coy Thomas Sunderman of Eagle Lake; sister and brother-in-law Elyce and Fred Kahn of Richmond; brothers and sisters-in-law, Charles R. “Chuck” and Marguerite Naiser Jr. of Rockport, her twin, Stephen Dan and Beth Naiser of Sandia; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones.

The family has requested memorials be made to the Stephanie Sunderman Memorial Scholarship Fund, First National Bank, P.O. Box 247, Eagle Lake, TX 77434.
