Carmel Belasquez

Carmel G. “Star” Belasquez, age 80, of Wharton, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, in a Wharton hospital following an extended illness. He was born on Nov. 25, 1923, in Victoria, the son of the late Selvano Belasquez and Guadalupe Garcia Belasquez.

Mr. Belasquez had been a resident of Wharton for most of his life and was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Wharton. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Belasquez married Lucinda Gusman on Aug. 24, 1961, in Humble. He worked as a salesman for Cochran Motor Company and enjoyed a career in retail sales for many years. He also was a former security guard and served as a cook at the Wharton County Jail.

Following cremation, memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. today, Friday, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Mack Mathis officiating.

Survivors include his wife, Lucinda Belasquez of Wharton; daughter, Marla Jane Belasquez of Wharton; son, Carmel Belasquez Jr. of Texas; sister, Delores Mata of Richmond; five grandchildren, including Marley Alcalar and Matthew Alcalar, and six great-grandchildren.

Richard Boehm

Richard F. Boehm, age 82, of Wharton, died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, in a Houston hospital following an automobile accident. He was born on April 13, 1922, in De Costa, the son of the late Emil Boehm and Frances Mikeska Boehm.

Mr. Boehm had been a resident of Wharton since 1951 and was a member of First Baptist Church of Wharton. He married Dorothy Whalan on June 10, 1946, in Gonzales. He worked with the Wharton Independent School District for many years as an agriculture teacher, junior high school principal, high school principal, tax assessor-collector and business manager until his retirement in 1985. After his retirement, he worked as the manager of Sparkles Car Wash in Wharton, Sealy and Bellville. Mr. Boehm was a past president of the Wharton Lion’s Club. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith Carmichael officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Boehm of Wharton; son, Dr. Richard J. Boehm, D.D.S., of Houston; sisters and brothers-in-law, Allene and Ivan Psencik and Dorothy and Lester Fuzzell, all of Victoria; four nephews, Kevin and Michael Psencik and Norman and Kenneth Fuzzell; and dearest family friend, Vernell Brightmon.

Pallbearers were Joe Urbanovsky, Forrest Lewis, Oscar Rasmussen, Jack Thornton, Charles Svoboda, Ed Lechler, Ray Reed and Don Hillis.

Honorary Pallbearers were Max Rotholz, William Barker, Tom Pickett, Tommy Taylor, Tom Gladden, Hugh Hoffman, Dan Sweeney, Lawrence Socha, Dr. Victor H. Driscoll, DVM, and Dr. Frank Mann, DVM.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family requests donations to the Wharton County Junior College Dental Hygiene Program, c/o Wharton County Junior College, 911 E. Boling Highway, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home in Wharton

Pete Martinez

Pete Martinez Sr., age 79, of Glen Flora, died Sunday, Jan. 15, 2006, in Wharton. He was born on Jan. 31, 1926, in La Grange, son of the late Jose Martinez and Catarina Nieto Martinez.

Mr. Martinez was a longtime resident of Pierce before moving to Glen Flora in 1961. He married Isabel Vargas on Feb. 1, 1948, in Pierce. Mr. Martinez was a self-employed trucker. He retired in 1980. Mr. Martinez was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He enjoyed playing his accordion for his family and friends.

Funeral mass services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2006, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment will follow in the Glen Flora Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Isabel Martinez of Glen Flora; daughters and son-in-law, Mary Flores of Glen Flora and Josie and Joe Flores of Glen Flora; sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Mary Jane Martinez Jr. of Glen Flora, Floyd and Janie F. Martinez of Wharton, Joe Martinez of Glen Flora and John and Rosana Martinez of Hungerford; sister, Guadalupe Alvarado of Orchard; 29 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren. Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by two sisters and eight brothers.

Pallbearers are John Martinez Jr., Floyd Martinez Jr., Joe Flores Jr., Pete Martinez III, George Flores IV and Joe Martinez Jr.

Elvis Castro

Graveside services for Elvis Aaron Castro, infant son of Ralph and Lorene Castro, were held Tuesday at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. He was born and died on March 1, 2003, in Wharton at Gulf Coast Medical Center.

Survivors include parents, Ralph Castro and Lorene Danielle Cardenas; sister, Briana Estrada of Germany; brothers, Ralph Castro Jr., Frank Castro, Brandon Galabeas, Brandon Castro and Christian Castro, all of Wharton; grandparents, Julia De Leon of San Antonio, Mr. and Mrs. Juan Castro Sr. of Wharton and Mr. and Mrs. Julian Machuca of Boling.

W.C. Guffey

W.C. “Clifford” Guffey, 77, of Bay City and formerly of Wharton, died Feb. 28, 2003, at Hermann Hospital in Houston. He was born Feb. 8, 1926, in East Bernard, to the late O.V. and Tressa Blanch Shelton Guffey.

He was a retired manager for American National Insurance Company. Mr. Guffey was also a veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He was a devoted family man and a friend to all, with a perpetual smile on his face and a laugh in his soul.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Margaret Love Guffey of Bay City; son, David R. Guffey of Lake Jackson; daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Greg B. Westmoreland of Bay City; sisters, Mary Obenhaus of Bonus and Doris Lee Lechler of Wharton; brothers, Gene Guffey of Wharton and Donald Guffey of Bay City; three grandchildren, Kip Baer Westmoreland and wife Kameron of Pearland, Jay Baer Westmoreland of Houston and Erin Stone and husband Chance of Bay City; three great-grandchildren, Cody Baer Westmoreland, Katelyn Michelle Stone and Riley Elyse Westmoreland. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Winnie Ruth Shroyer; and brothers, Lloyd and Vernon Guffey.

Funeral service were held at 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 3, 2003, at Taylor Brothers Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Pauline Harvey officiating. Interment followed at Cedarvale Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kip B. Westmoreland, Jay B. Westmoreland, Chance Stone, Curtis Stroyer, Harold Boles and Bert L. Huebner.

Arrangements were with Taylor Brothers Funeral Home in Bay City.

Mozelle Vonderau

Funeral services for Mozelle Vonderau, 79, of Wharton, are pending at Wharton Funeral Home.
Mrs. Vonderau died March 4, 2003 in Wharton.

Bruce Waddell

Funeral services for Bruce W. Waddell, 86, of Eagle Lake, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Dulany Funeral Home in Eagle Lake with Rev. Ed Triem officiating. Burial will follow in Lake Side Cemetery in Eagle Lake.

Mr. Waddell died Feb. 24, 2003, in Hermann Hospital of Houston from injuries received in an auto accident near Columbus earlier that day. He was born Feb. 8, 1917, in Matthews, to William Waddell and Zeta Catherine Sunderman Waddell.

He was a lifelong resident of Eagle Lake, a graduate of Eagle Lake High School Class of 1933, followed by two years at Schreiner Institute then graduated from the University of Texas in 1931 with degrees in marketing and banking. Mr. Waddell served as a 1st lieutenant with the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater of Operations. He married Rosemary “Bun” Gautreaux in White Castle, La, on April 10, 1943. Mr. Waddell had a lifelong career in rice farming and ranching in Colorado and Wharton Counties and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Eagle Lake and former member of Eagle Lake Lions Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Rosemary “Bun” Waddell on June 20, 1993; son, Bob Waddell on Nov. 11, 1982; and brother, Raymond Waddell July 6, 1999.

Survivors include sons, Gary Waddell of Wharton and Jim Waddell and wife, Janice, of Bonus; two grandchildren; sisters and brothers-in-law, Louise and Ted Brunner of Eagle Lake, Zeta Mae Herzik of Schulenburg, Evelyn Walsh of Katy and Myra Lucille and Bill English of Kingsville; nieces, nephews, other relatives and loved ones including sister-in-law, Liz Waddell of Eagle Lake and daughter-in-law, Marsha Waddell Turner of Eagle Lake.

Cecil Albert White

Cecil Albert White, age 75, of Wharton died Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003, in Gulf Coast Medical Center in Wharton following a brief illness. He was born on April 29, 1927, in Cuero, the son of the late Albert Payton White and Ethel Cleo Holland White.

He was married for nearly 56 years to his beloved wife, Georgia Mae Elizabeth Thieme White, whom he married on April 6, 1947, in Cuero.

Mr. White has been a resident of Wharton since October of 1953 and was a former resident of Cuero in Dewitt County. He was the owner and operator of Grapette/Frostie Bottling Company and Wharton Beverage Packers for 27 years and was a member of the National Soft Drink Association. He also owned and operated Payton Freight Ltd. for the following 13 years until his retirement in 1995.
He was a veteran of World War II serving as a First Class Seaman in the U.S. Coast Guard. While in the Coast Guard, he competed in the amateur fight program of the Olympic Boxing Association and won the Heavyweight Class title. Following his honorable discharge, he trained and sparred with the great Joe Lewis and placed in the National Golden Gloves competition.

Mr. White became a private pilot in 1960 and was an avid “fly boy.” Among the favorite of his planes was his 1954 twin Bonanza which had been used to transport officials with the U.S. Army. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 87 in Wharton. Mr. White was also a member of St. Paul’s American Lutheran Church in Wharton and was instrumental in the construction of its Fellowship Hall.

He was preceded in death by one son, Glenn “Tank” White; a son-in-law, Henry Pete “Buddy” Holesovsky III; and one grandson, Timothy Duane McPherson.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 3, at the chapel of the Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Kersten of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church officiating. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.

Survivors include his beloved wife, Georgia White of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dennis McPherson of Richmond, Susan Holesovsky and Ted Meuth of Brazoria, Cynthia White and Geep Reid of Austin, Rebecca and Mark Wick of Hallettsville and Jane and Randy Lane of Port O’Connor; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Becky White of Wharton; daughter-in-law, Kathy White of Wharton; a sister, Jerry Moore Parker of Cuero; and two brothers, Clarence Odell White and Billy Joe White both of Cuero; grandchildren, Shelly McPherson Grant, Jason McPherson, Julie White, Dusty White, Melissa Holesovsky Clark, Brad Holesovsky, B.J. Holesovsky, Bobby Osterloh, Rick Osterloh, Nate Reid, Mike White, Krissy White, Amy Wick, Payton Wick and Sterling Wick; great-grandchildren, Karis McPherson, Amber McPherson Grant, Sydney White, Chase Grant, Madelyn Clark, Ty Clark, Blaine Holesovsky and Lil Buddy Holesovsky; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Pallbearers were Tommy Clark, Greg Whatley, Jason McPherson, Brad Holesovsky, B. J. Holesovsky, Mike White Jr., Bobby Osterloh and Rick Osterloh.

Honorary Pallbearers were Dusty White, Payton Wick, Sterling Wick, Nate Reid, his great grandsons and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Robert Armstead

Funeral services for Robert Armstead, 61, of Kendleton, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Newman Chapel United Methodist Church with Rev. Brian Lakin officiating. Burial will follow in Green Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Gooden-Hatton Funeral Home in Wharton.

Mr. Armstead died April 5, 2004 at Gulf Coast Medical Center. He was born Sept. 14, 1942, in Hallettsville to Jewel and Celo Herrin Armstead.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Humphrey Armstead of Kendleton; sons, mark Brinkley Armstead of Fort Worth and Avis Earl Armstead of Richmond; daughter, Winifred Armstead of Kendleton; brother, Eddie James of Richmond; sisters, Ruby Hayes of Elgin, Ill., and Marion Jean Burleson of Los Angeles, Calif.

Jessie Bell

Funeral services for Jessie Alice Bell, 92, of Bay City, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, at Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Michael Atherton officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Vale Cemetery in Bay City.

Mrs. Bell died April 2, 2004, in a Bay City hospital. She was born on Sept. 10, 1911, in Louise, the daughter of the late Leonard Barker and Dora Alice Allen Barker.

She had been a resident of Bay City for the past two years and was a former resident of Wharton. She was a member of Christ Is Life Church in Wharton. Her parents, and her first husband, William Fred Greer, preceded her in death in 1948. She married George Donald Bell in 1959 in Magnet and he preceded her in death on Aug. 18, 1980. Two brothers, Robert and Floyd Barker and three sisters, Inez Waters, Lois Joines and Gertrude Bock also preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters and son-in-law, Debbie and Robert Jones of Bay City, Betty Shull and Frances Chatwick, both of Tucson, Ariz.; sons and daughters-in-law, James Greer of Houston, William and Jackie Greer of Angleton, Oscar and Donna Greer of Smiley, Garland and Sandra Greer of Houston and Ralph and Vicki Greer of St. Anthony, Idaho; sister, Maggie Cartwright of Tomball; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Carl Garman

Carl Frederick “Fritz” Garman, age 74, of Wharton, died Friday, April 2, 2004, in a Wharton nursing home following an extended illness. He was born on Jan. 11, 1930, in Sunbury, Pa., the son of the late John Adam Garman and Sara Abbey Hine Garman.

Mr. Garman had been a resident of Wharton for the past 18 years and was a former resident of Houston. He was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Wharton. Mr. Garman worked as a carpenter, roofer and painter and enjoyed fishing and playing the lotto. Besides his parents, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Jim Garman, sisters Minevera Karnes and Carrie Stettler and an infant son, Carl Garman Jr. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, in the Chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Don Hurley officiating. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include his daughter, Paula Sue Garman of Ohio; step-daughter, Kimberly Downs of Houston; sons, Phillip Garman of Wharton, Anthony Garman of Missouri, John Garman of North Carolina and David Garman of California; grandchildren, Maryssa Renee Alvarado, Blake Adam Garman, Lauren Downs, Meagan Downs, Jillian Downs, John Downs and five other grandchildren living out of state.

Special friends were Carolyn Davenport and Veronica Hernandez and his special adopted families, Clyde and Sheila Brenk and family; Ken and Becky Barnett and family; Freddie and Lillie Alvarado and family.

Pallbearers were Hondo Marin, J.C. Rodriguez, Bobby Barnett, Shawn Brenk, Freddie Alvarado and Ken Barnett.

Honorary Pallbearers were the members of the Wharton Volunteer Fire Dept. and the Wharton E.M.S.

Funeral services were under the direction of the Wharton Funeral Home.

Anita Harrison

Funeral services for Anita D. Harrison, 96, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Seven Star Baptist Church in Hungerford. Burial will follow in Jawbone Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home.

Mrs. Harrison died April 3, 2004, at Gulf Coast Medical Center. She was born March 30, 1908, in Egypt to Louia Davis and Mattie Pratt. She married A.D. Harrison, who preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters, Gertrude Mitchell and L.C. Poindexter; one god daughter and two god grandchildren.
