Delno Schultz

On April 1, 2004, Delno Fritz Schultz, well-loved by family and friends, passed from this earthly life of 86 years to a life in heaven with his eternal Father. He was born in Garwood on Aug. 16, 1917, to Fritz H. and Whilmine “Mamie” Georg Schultz. He died in Wharton after a lengthy illness.
Preceding his death were his parents, his brother, Wilton “Dub” Schultz, and his sisters, Annie Minnie and Laura Mae Schmeekle.

Mr. Schultz is survived by his wife, Adele; his son, Preston Schultz and wife, Becky, of Austin; daughter, Kristine Berry and husband, George, of New Braunfels and daughter, Kathy Miller and husband, Tom, of Wharton. Delno is also survived by seven grandchildren, Kyren Schultz of Austin, Guy and Dustin Matula of Wharton, Kelly and Katherine Berry of New Braunfels, and Melissa Rotholz and Rebecca Huber, both of Houston; and three great-grandchildren, Carson and Reade Rotholz and Joseph Thomas Huber.

As a child, Delno and his family moved to Crescent where he attended schools through his junior year, graduating as an honor student, then transferred to Wharton High School in 1934 where he completed his senior year. His career with the U.S. Postal Service began that same year as a part-time clerk in Wharton. In 1937 Mr. Schultz was promoted to regular full-time clerk and worked his way up through various positions until he was appointed Postmaster in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy. For the next 16 years he served his fellow citizens as postmaster, including a time as president of the Texas 9th district of the National Association for Postmasters of the United States. Because of his vigorous promotion of the zip code system, Delno earned the affectionate nickname of “Zip Code Schultz.”

During his early days at the Post Office, Delno met his future bride, Adele Peterson of Louise. They married in Wharton on May 10, 1942, their marriage lasting just short of 62 years.

Very dear to his heart were the First United Methodist Church of Wharton and his Sunday School class. For 21 years, he served as chairman of the Building and Ground’s Committee and for 14 years he was superintendent of church school. He also served as head usher and greeter for many years, and as lay leader. In February of 1994, a banquet was held to honor his 50 years of continuous service to the congregation.

As a father of three active children, he served as a Little League coach, consultant for Boy Scout Explorer Post No. 536, girls’ softball coach, chaperone and bus driver for Girl Scouts and MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship). In 1962 Mr. Schultz was instrumental in the inception, development and realization of the Wharton Girls’ Softball Association program and in 1966, he, with the help of other volunteers and suppliers, built the field, concession building and stands. For the association’s first 12 years, he served as its president.

Mr. Schultz served as a member of the local Red Cross for many years and the Building Design Committee for the Construction of the Wharton Community Civic Center. He also chaired the City of Wharton’s Building Standards Commission and held various positions in the Chamber of Commerce. The Wharton Rotary Club, however, was his favorite area of community service in which he was an active member for many years, holding several offices including president in 1967-68. The highest Rotary honor was bestowed upon him in 1976 when he was designated as a Paul Harris fellow, presented during the “Delno ‘Zip Code’ Schultz roast night.”

Retiring in 1977 after 42 years with the Post Office, he took a part-time position as building construction inspector for the then Wharton Bank & Trust Co. and later became host/usher with the Wharton Funeral Home. In 1990 he fully retired.

He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, church, and community. Mr. Schultz never met a stranger and he set a lifelong example of service, dedication, honesty, and hard work that will be lasting in those who knew him and loved him and in their generations that follow.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, April 3, 2004, at 4 p.m. in First United Methodist Church of Wharton with arrangements by Wharton Funeral Home. Burial took place at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery of Wharton. Officiating were Rev. Paul Thomasson and Rev. Don Storey.
