Larry Macha

Larry Lee Macha was born April 14, 1948, in Wharton, the son of Leroy W. and Ann Kovar Macha. He grew up and attended school in East Bernard graduating from East Bernard High School. In 1970, he graduated from Texas A&M University and, in 1973, he graduated from the University of Texas School of Law.

Mr. Macha was united in marriage with Margaret Guilbeaux in Rosenberg. They made their home in Bellville where they have been members of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.

A prominent, well-respected attorney in Austin County, he had been active in numerous civic organizations. Mr. Macha was currently legal counsel for Industry State Bank, San Bernard Electric Coop and First National Bank in Bellville.

A country boy at heart, he loved ranching and tending his cattle. Mr. Macha also enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a devoted husband and father and had a great sense of humor.

He passed away Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, in Houston at the age of 55.

He is survived by his wife of more than 30 years, Margaret Macha and children Ross Macha and Sarah Macha, all of Bellville. Mr. Macha is also survived by his mother, Ann Kovar Macha of Hungerford; sister, Judy Macha Brown of Houston; brother, Gene Macha of Hungerford; father-in-law, Charles Guilbeaux of Houston; and many other dear friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his father, Leroy Macha.

A vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bellville. Funeral mass was celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Tim Bucek as celebrant. Graveside services followed at 2 p.m. at St. John Catholic Church Cemetery in Hungerford.

Pallbearers were Guy Schultz, Gary Frank, Jimmy Marik, Dale Sikora, Terry Logan and Charles Goeke.

Honorary pallbearers were Nelson Davis and J.R. King.

In lieu at usual remembrances, friends may make memorial gifts to the American Heart Association, Memorial Processing Center, P.0. Box 15186, Austin, Texas 78761; American Diabetes Association, Always and Forever Memorial and Honor Program, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, Ohio, 44720; or to a charity of personal choice.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Schmidt Funeral Home in Bellville.

Willie Mayes

Funeral services for Willie P. Mayes will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Union Memorial United Methodist Church Sandy Community in Mexia.

Mrs. Mayes died Aug. 15, 2003, at Gulf Coast Medical Center after an extended illness. She was the only child born to Jerry and Edna Owen Briscoe in Mexia.

She graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 1960 with a bachelor of education degree. During her career, she taught at several school districts in Wharton County.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Charlie Mayes Jr., cousins and other relatives.

Janie Talafuse

Janie Agnes Talafuse, age 89, of Wharton, died Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, in a Houston hospital. She was born on Jan. 12, 1914, in Wallis, the daughter of the late Joseph Macha and Louise Klecka Macha.

Mrs. Talafuse lived in Wharton from 1931 until 1963 before moving to Falfurrias, where she lived for 24 years. She and her husband have been permanent residents of Wharton since 1987. She married William Frank “Bill” Talafuse on Nov. 16, 1938, in Wharton. Mrs. Talafuse was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was a homemaker, who loved to garden and grow beautiful flowers.

Funeral services were held 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2003, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Wake services were held Monday evening at Wharton Funeral Home with Deacon Alvin Matthys officiating.

Survivors include her husband, William “Bill” Talafuse of Wharton; sons, Bill Talafuse and wife Margaret of Houston and Larry Talafuse and wife Melanie of Littleton, Colo.; sister, Mary Martin of Tilton, Ill.; brother, John Macha of Wharton; grandchildren, Steven Talafuse, Sarah Talafuse, Shane Brian and Kris Brian. She was preceded in death by a sister, Rosie Talafuse; and by brothers, Robert Macha, Joe Macha, Frankie Macha and Benjamin Macha.

Pallbearers were Gilbert Talafuse Jr., Steve Talafuse, Lester Macha, Frankie Bacak, Larry Janicek, Russell Janicek, Wilbert Talafuse and Thurman Talafuse.

If desiring, memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or Holy Family Fellowship Committee, both at 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, Texas 77488; or to a charity of personal choice.

Lydia Hundl

Lydia Lillian Hundl, age 85, of Wharton died Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2003, in a Wharton hospital following a brief illness. She was born on May 13, 1918, in Fayetteville, the daughter of the late Josef S. Kostka and Mary Gerik Kostka.

Mrs. Hundl had been a resident of Wharton since 1920 and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton. She married Edmund B. Hundl on June 22, 1937, in Wharton. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters, the Holy Family Altar Society and was a past-president of the Holy Family Mother’s Club. Mrs. Hundl was a homemaker, a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She enjoyed cooking and growing flowers.

A rosary service was held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home and a funeral mass was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, 2004, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton with Rev. Joe Vrana officiating and assisted by Rev. John Kunnathukuzhy. Burial followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery in Wharton.

Survivors include her husband, Ed Hundl of Wharton; daughters and sons-in-law, Jo Marie and Raymond Rabius of East Bernard, Priscilla and Sidney Davis of Richmond, Lorna and Marvin Kaiser of Wharton, Debbie and Jim Lee of Lane City, and Carla J. Hundl of Houston; sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Gloria Hundl and Gilbert and Theresa Hundl, all of Wharton, John and Donna Hundl of Brazoria and Gene and Belinda Hundl of East Bernard; 14 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Pallbearers were Russell Rabius, Travis Hundl, Chris Bock, Eric Hundl, Chad Hundl and Jared Hundl.

Honorary Pallbearers were all of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In lieu of usual remembrances, the family request memorials to Holy Family Catholic Church Building Fund or the Holy Family Altar Society, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Otis Koebelen

Funeral services for Otis Albert Koebelen, 79, of Boling, will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Joseph Catholic Mission in Boling. Burial will follow in West Gethsemane Cemetery in Rosenberg. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday with a rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Koebelen died Jan. 1, 2004 after an extended illness.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Mission, c/o Holy Family Catholic Church, 2011 Briar Lane, Wharton, TX 77488.

Joe Popp

Joe August Popp, age 73, of El Campo, passed away at his residence on Dec. 31, 2003. He was born on Aug. 2, 1930, in Nada to the late Ferdinand F. and Anna Marie Popp.

He was a retired truck driver and served as a private first class in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by son Allen Popp and wife Doreen of El Campo; daughters, Sandy Popp of East Bernard, Darlene Kahanek of El Campo and Lynell Ustynik and husband Scott of Wharton; grandchildren Cody Kahanek, Meagan Kahanek, Jenna Popp, Taylor Ustynik and Hunter Ustynik; sister-in-law, Mary Popp of Nada; brother-in-law, Albert Winter of Hillje; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Virginia Valigura Popp; sister, Cecilia Winter; and brothers. Albert Popp and Louis Popp.

A parish rosary was recited at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Triska Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, Saturday, at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Gary Janak officiating. Burial with military honors, under the auspices of American Legion Post No. 251, will follow at the Holy Cross Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was held from noon on Friday.

Serving as pallbearers are Gene Rab, Cody Kahanek, Glenn Kahanek, Taylor Ustynik, Preston Dornak, David Popp, Jerry Winter and Laddie Kocian.

Memorial donations may be made to St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 304 W. Church St., El Campo, TX 77437.

Services are under the direction of Triska Funeral Home in El Campo (979)-543-3681.

Zerenie White

Funeral services for Zerenie White, 75, of Kendleton, will be held at 1 a.m. today, Saturday, at New Prospect Baptist Church in Needville with Rev. E.M. Phillips officiating. Burial will follow in Paradise Cemetery in Kendleton.

Mr. White died Dec. 26, 2003, at Hospice of Texas Medical Center. He was born April 12, 1938, in Queen City to Joseph and Lillian Mayberry White.

Survivors include sons, Larry White and Marcus White, both of Texarkana, Ark.; daughters and sons-in-law, Dianne and O.W. Lollies and Federia and Chet Smith, all of Texarkana, Ark., Loretta and Gary Lynch of Cedar Hill, Beverly and Willie Viels of Mesquite, Gwendella Nash of Milwaukee, Wis., Evette McCoy of Garland, and Zerenia and Randolph Jones of Houston.

Joshua Barron

Joshua “Jogie” Sixto Barron, age 26, of Wharton, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004. He was born on Aug. 5, 1977, in Bellville, the son of Raymond Barron and Betty Louise Gaona.

Mr. Barron was a lifelong resident of Wharton and was Catholic by faith.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, in the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Raymond Jackson officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. A rosary service was held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2004, at Wharton Funeral Home.

Survivors include his mother, Betty Louise Rojas of Wharton; father, Raymond Barron of Texas; fiancée, Jennifer Dybala of East Bernard and her children, Isaac Vasquez and Christian Torres; grandmother, Maria Guadalupe Gaona of Wharton; grandfather, Pilar Guerrero of Wharton; sisters, Casey Lynn Barron of Wharton, Betty Paulette Diaz of Wharton and Leslie Ann Diaz of Wharton; brother, Aaron Barron Sr. of Houston; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Sixto Gaona, and by his paternal grandparents, Siprano and Inez Barron Sr.

Pallbearers were Felix Pena Jr., John Castillo Sr., John Castillo Jr., Aaron Barron Sr., Jesus Lozano, Bradley Barron, Rudy Castillo Sr., Issac Vasquez and Joey Garza.

Mary Fields

Mary Francis Dixon Fields, age 84, of Boling, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at her residence in Iago. She was born on Jan. 6, 1920, in Claremore, Okla., the daughter of the late Calvin Dixon and Grace Agnes French Dixon.

Mrs. Fields family moved to the Eagle Lake area as a young child and she was a graduate of Eagle Lake High School. She later attended the Caney Valley Hospital Nursing Program in the late 1930s. Mrs. Fields married Robert Lee Fields Sr. on Dec. 24, 1938, in Iago. She was a homemaker and a 66-year resident of the Boling/Iago area. Mrs. Fields was a longtime member of Iago Federated Church and attended Christ Is Life Church in Wharton. She was preceded in death by a sister and five brothers.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 6, 2004. at the chapel of Wharton Funeral Home with Rev. Herbert Low officiating. Interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Lee Fields Sr. of Boling; sons and daughters-in-law, Jack Lee and Jan Ellen Prather Fields, Robert Lee and Barbara Evon Ferguson Fields and Benjamin Charles and Margaret Nadine Smith Fields, all of Katy, and Richard James and Linda Kathleen Low Fields of Lake Jackson; sister, Alice Pavlu of Wharton; grandchildren and spouses, Ellen Prather Fields McDougal and B. J., Lee and Kim Gardner Fields, Robert Greg Fields, Kathleen Marie Fields, Charles Lee Fields, Dara Aileen Fields, Heidi Michelle Fields and Holly Beth Fields; great-grandchildren, Kathryn Ellen McDougal, Bethany Grace McDougal, James William Thomas McDougal, Michael Joseph Lee McDougal and Jackson Lee Fields.

Pallbearers were her sons and grandsons: Jack, Bobby, Ben, Rick, Lee, Greg and Charles Fields.
Honorary Pallbearers were Mike Wooten, Dr. Dwight King, Don Rivera, Gilbert Pospisil and all of her many friends and neighbors.

In lieu of usual remembrances the family requests memorials to: Hospice Support Care, 1102 N. Mechanic, El Campo TX 77437; or Iago Federated Church Building Fund, Rt. 1, Box 208, Boling TX 77420.

Funeral services were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Lloyd Peebles

Lloyd Hugh “Cotton” Peebles, age 73, of Alvin, died Monday, Aug. 2, 2004, in Veterans Administration Hospital in San Antonio following an extended illness. He was born on April 6, 1931, in Wharton, the son of the late Charles Peebles Sr. and Claudia Thomas Peebles Page.

Mr. Peebles was raised in the Wharton and Boling areas and had been a resident of Alvin for the past 10 years. He was a graduate of Boling High School and he later attended the University of Houston. Mr. Peebles joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. Peebles was Protestant by faith and a member of the Alvin VFW Post.

Graveside services and interment services were held at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, at the Wharton City Cemetery with Pastor Elizabeth Hanley officiating. military services were under the auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post No. 87.

Survivors include his daughter, Yvonne Peebles Day of New Braunfels; sister, Gloria Page King of Duncan, Okla.; brothers, Charles Peebles of Austin and Clarence “Red” Page of Alvin; grandchildren, Jordon Day and Loren Day, both of Alvin.

Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Rimmer, Jack Simmons, Joe Macek and Larry Boehle.

If desiring, memorials may be made to the Lloyd Peebles Memorial Fund, for the V.A. Hospice Program, c/o Yvonne Day, 1633 Hunter Road No. F, New Braunfels, TX 78130.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Wharton Funeral Home.

Iris Harris

Funeral services for Iris Harris, 75, of Wharton, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Little Zion Baptist Church in Kendleton with Rev. R. Booker officiating. Burial will follow in Bowden Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today, Friday.

Mrs. Harris died May 16, 2006, at Avalon Place. She was born Nov. 28, 1930, in La Grange to Seth and Claudia Mae Moore Dobbins.

Survivors include sons, Robert Harris of Rosenberg, David Harris of Atlanta, Ga., Jerry Harris of El Campo and Roy Harris of Spring; daughter, Sandra Harris of East Bernard; sisters, Johnnie Mae Dickerson, Fannie P. Hightower, both of Houston, and Le Etta East of Dallas.

Tommie Gaines Lowe

Tommie Gaines Lowe, age 93, of Wharton, died Saturday, July 22, 2006 in Wharton following an extended illness. He was born on September 2, 1912 in DeLeon, Texas, son of the late Bill Lowe and Pearl Matelsky Lowe.

Mr. Lowe was a 20 year resident of Wharton and a former longtime resident of Boling. While living in Boling, he was owner and founder of Lowe’s Texaco Station for 38 years until his retirement in 1977. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the U. S. Army. He married Burnis Lorene Cook on June 15, 1943 in Marlin, TX and she preceded him in death on May 31, 1986. Mr. Lowe was a member of Abell St. Church of Christ. He enjoyed fishing and being with family, especially his grandchildren.

Funeral services were held 2:00pm Tuesday, July 25, 2006 at Wharton Funeral Home Chapel with Mr. Paul Jones officiating. military graveside services and interment followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery under the Auspices of the Wharton American Legion Post #87.

Survivors include his daughters, Barbara Gustafson and husband, Jimmie Lee of Boling, Karen Pyka and husband, Fred of Wharton, Shirley Zahradnik and husband, Anton of Sugar Land, and Rosalie Pekar and husband, Gary of Wharton; son, Tommie D. Lowe of Matagorda; sister, Lucille Brown of Alice, TX; brother, Lin Lowe of Bremond, TX; grandchildren, Lori Schindler, Shannon Berntsen, Denise Hudspeth, Danette Hudspeth, Shaina Lowe and Tate Lowe; five great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by sisters, Maggie Jackson, Bertie Lee Johnson and Francis Butler, brothers, Bill Lowe and Wallace Lowe; and granddaughter, Amy Zahradnik.

Pallbearers were Joe Melancon, Kory Melancon, John Hobbins, Scott Hobbins, Tim Schindler and Kenneth Berntsen.
