THOMAS RAYMOND ODELL JR.

Thomas Raymond Odell Jr., 76, of Liberty died April 3, 2000 at his residence.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Liberty with burial at Cooke Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Allison Funeral Service in Liberty. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Throckmorton, he lived in Liberty many years and managed Allsurance Insurance Agency. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Odell of Liberty; sons, Michael Odell of Houston and Dennis Odell of Liberty; daughter, Patti Dickinson of Kingwood; and six grandchildren.

RALPH C. PETERSON

Ralph C. Peterson, 52, of Port Arthur died April 4, 2000 at his residence.

A private memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Charles Catholic Church in Nederland.

A native of Hoboken, N.J., he lived in Port Arthur four years and was retired from the computer industry. He was a U.S. Marine Corps Vietname War veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Linda Robinson Peterson of Port Arthur; son, Russell Peterson of Elgin, Ill.; and stepsons, Craig Robinson, Alan Robinson and Blake Robinson, all of Austin.

LILLIE MAE SMITH

Lillie Mae Smith, 84, of Beaumont died April 3, 2000 at Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Community Funeral Chapel on Irma Avenue with burial later at Live Oak Cemetery.

A native of Taylor, she lived in Beaumont 53 years and was a retired private home cook.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

OTIS DEAN SWAYZER

Otis Dean Swayzer, 42, of Beaumont died March 30, 2000 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

A graveside service will be at noon today at Pear Orchard Cemetery under the direction of Mercy Funeral Home on Gladys Avenue. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. today to time of service at the funeral home.

A native of Monroe, La., he lived in Beaumont 41 years.

Survivors include his mother, Margaret Swayzer of Beaumont; sister, Robin McGriff of Beaumont; and brother, Cecil Brown of Beaumont.

EDDIE LEE WHITAKER

Eddie Lee Whitaker, 81, of Beaumont died April 2, 2000 at Dubuis Hospital.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church with burial at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Calvary Mortuary. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a memorial service from 7 to 9 p.m. at Maxson Memorial Church of God in Christ.

A native of Fletcher, she lived in Beaumont more than 30 years.

Survivors include sons, Leon Whitaker Jr. of Compton, Calif., and Ollis Whitaker Sr. of Beaumont; brother, Albert J. Reed of Houston; 15 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

VIOLET BERNICE BENNETT

Violet Bernice Bennett, 81, of Beaumont died April 17, 2000 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Funeral Home with burial at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Glenpool, Okla., she lived in the Beaumont area 58 years and was retired in sales.

Survivors include her husband, Earl Bennett of Beaumont; son, Earl Eric Bennett of Beaumont; and brother, D.T. Miles of New Iberia, La.

GERTIE BLACKWELL

Gertie Blackwell, 95, of Hankamer died April 15, 2000 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at Broussard’s Mortuary in Winnie with burial at Whittington Cemetery in Hankamer. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. today to time of service at the mortuary.

A lifelong resident of Hankamer, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Elsie Blend and Ida Haskins, both of Hankamer; brother, Wilburn Hill of Anahuac; 21 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and 34 great-great-grandchildren.

NELL M. CALLAHAN

Nell M. Callahan, 85, of Orange died April 18, 2000 at Mid-Jefferson Hospital in Nederland.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Claybar Funeral Home in Orange with burial at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley, La. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

A native of Ragley, she lived in Orange most of her life and was a pickle packer for Del Dixie Pickle.

Survivors include sons, John C. Callahan of Nederland and Jerry B. Callahan of Wyoming; daughter, Janelle of Colorado; sister, Hazel Robertson of Butner, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

ONNIE L. CARROLL

Onnie L. Carroll, 92, of Beaumont died April 18, 2000 at Spring Creek Manor.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary in Beaumont.

A native of Village Mills, he lived in Beaumont 45 years and was a bi-vocational pastor.

Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Siver of Beaumont; grandchildren, Karen Forcier of Fannett and Ray Siver of San Antonio; and six great-grandchildren.

JOSEPH ‘BEEF’ CHAVIS

Joseph "Beef’’ Chavis, 69, of Beaumont died April 15, 2000 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church with burial at Pear Orchard Cemetery under the direction of Community Funeral Chapel on East Lucas Drive. Visitation will be from 8:30 a.m. Thursday to time of service with a rosary to be recited at 9:30 a.m. at the church.

A native of Liberty, he lived in Beaumont a number of years and was a retired laborer for Bridges Construction.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine Chavis of Beaumont; mother, Odelia Chavis of Beaumont; daughters, Janie Mae Gilford, Melva Jean Turner and Lynda Chavis Wilson, all of Beaumont, and Jo Ann Harvey of San Antonio; brothers, Lee Ernest Chavis, Paul Chavis, Peter Chavis and Walter Chavis, all of Beaumont, and Elroy Chavis of Seattle, Wash.; sisters, Genevia Roberts, Jennie Mae David, Josephine Scott and Mary Ann Chavis, all of Beaumont, and Aneva Edwards of China; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

HELEN ROSE COLBURN COUTHRAN

Helen Rose Colburn Couthran, 58, of West Orange died April 17, 2000 at Jacqueline’s Place in Vidor.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Orange with burial at Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery in West Orange under the direction of Claybar Funeral Home in Orange. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A lifelong resident of Orange, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Donnie Couthran of West Orange; sons, Jeffery Couthran of Orange and Gerald Couthran of Anahuac; sister, Edith Ann Ballard of Orange; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association, 15825 Shady Grove Road, Suite 140, Rockville, Md. 20850.

RAYFORD T. CROW

Rayford T. Crow, 77, of Broaddus died April 18, 2000 at Memorial Hospital in Lufkin.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Liberty Hill Cemetery in San Augustine under the direction of Wyman Roberts Funeral Home in San Augustine.

A longtime resident of Broaddus, he was a retired supervisor for DuPont and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his sister, Lillian Dickerson of San Augustine.

NATALYE RUTH DOUGLAS

Natalye Ruth Douglas, 71, of Beaumont died April 15, 2000 at her residence.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with burial at Live Oak Cemetery under the direction of Community Funeral Chapel on Irma Avenue. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church.

A native of Chicago, she lived in Beaumont 42 years and was a retired teacher for Beaumont Independent School District.

Survivors include her husband, Jake Stanton Douglas II of Beaumont; son, Jake Stanton Douglas III of Beaumont; and three grandchildren.

DOROTHY VIRGINIA FOMBY

Dorothy Virginia Fomby, 61, of Newton died April 17, 2000 at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home in Newton with burial at Newton City Cemetery.

A native of Springhill, La., she lived in Newton 31 years and was a former lunch room worker for Newton Independent School District.

Survivors include sons, Bobby Don Fomby and Gene Fomby, both of Newton, and Gary Fomby, Jeffery Arnold and Jason Arnold, all of Jasper; daughters, Dorothy Sue Fomby and Wendy Gill, both of Newton; brothers, William E. Bearden of Magnolia, Ark., John A. Bearden of Alvarado and Frank Bearden of Mt. Holly, Ark.; sisters, Faye Willis of Beaumont and Florence White of Magnolia; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

JACOB JAMES HUFF

Jacob James Huff, infant son of Gary and Melanie Huff of DeRidder, La., died April 15, 2000 at Baynes-Jones Medical Hospital in Fort Polk, La.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Beauregard Vernon Funeral Home in DeRidder with burial at Beauregard Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday to time of service at the funeral home.

Survivors other than parents include brothers, Christopher Huff and Matthew Huff, both of DeRidder; sister, Ernie Huff of DeRidder; and grandfather, John A. "Fred’’ Melancon of St. Martinville, La.
