SAMUEL S. Johnson SR.

Samuel S. Johnson Sr., 79, of Beaumont died Oct. 16, 2000, at his residence.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Baptist Church with entombment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum under the direction of Calvary Mortuary. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday to time of service at the church.

A native of Bunkie, La., he lived in Beaumont 63 years, was a retired truck driver and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include Isadora Johnson of Beaumont; sons, Samuel S. Johnson Jr. and David A. Johnson, both of Houston, Darrell L. Johnson of Gretna, La., and Vincent W. Johnson of Beaumont; daughters, Rita G. Thibeaux and Alice F. Johnson, both of Beaumont, and Cassandra Richardson of Hudson; brothers, Joshua Johnson Sr. of Beaumont and Andrew Johnson of Houston; sisters, Eura Johnson, Rose Johnson and Leslie Williams, all of Beaumont, Gladys Rice and Dorothy Glynn, both of Houston, Josephine Malone of Cheneyville, La., and Mary Young of Riverside, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

WILLETTE CORA KERSEY

Willette Cora Kersey, 94, of Bronson died Oct. 18, 2000, at Colonial Pines Nursing Home in San Augustine.

Cremation arrangements were handled by Starr Funeral Home in Hemphill.

A native of Jackson, Ohio, and a former resident of Miami Springs, Fla., she lived in Bronson four years and was a seamstress.

Survivors include her son, Dal C. Kersey of Jupiter, Fla.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

ROSE M. LANE

Rose M. Lane, 56, of Port Arthur died Oct. 17, 2000, at Park Place Medical Center.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home in Groves with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

A lifelong resident of Port Arthur, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Richard A. Lane Jr. of Groves and Ricky A. Lane of Port Arthur; daughter, Rosalie M. Smith of Port Arthur; brothers, Mitchell Cricchio and Ronnie Cricchio, both of Groves; sisters, Margaret Little of LaMarque and Tiney Robinson of Port Arthur; and five grandchildren.

EUNICE MARIE LAVERGNE

Eunice Marie Lavergne, 74, of Orange died Oct. 18, 2000, at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Friday at Dorman Funeral Home in Orange with burial at Autumn Oaks Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Church Point, La., and a former resident of Lafayette, La., she lived in the Orange area 38 years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Tricia Davis of Orange and Shirley Thacker of Porter; sons, Pat Lavergne of Mauriceville and Joseph Lavergne of Las Vegas; sisters, Mable LeJune of Baton Rouge and Mary Savoy of Church Point; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

PATRICK H. O’CONNELL

The Rev. Msgr. Patrick H. O’Connell, 74, of Beaumont died Oct. 16, 2000, at The Clairmont.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Cathedral with burial at Magnolia Cemetery under the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary in Beaumont. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday with a Christian vigil at 7 p.m. at the church.

A native of Fort Worth, he was a retired Diocese of Beaumont diocesan priest.

Survivors include his sister, Rosemary Dibrell of Kerrville.

Memorials may be made to Diocese of Beaumont Seminary Fund, P.O. Box 3948, Beaumont, Texas 77704-3948.

ROBERT SHELTON SIMMONS

Robert Shelton Simmons, 84, of Vidor died Oct. 16, 2000, at his residence.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Houston National Cemetery in Houston under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home in Vidor. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of DeRidder, La., he lived in Vidor 20 years and was a retired U.S. Steel machinist and a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include sons, Scott Steven Simmons of Stuttgart, Ark., Leonard Shelton Simmons of Baytown and Mark Christopher Simmons of Vidor; brothers, Brent Simmons of DeRidder and Buck Simmons of California; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

EDNA OLLIE STAFFORD

Edna Ollie Stafford, 93, of Beaumont died Oct. 17, 2000, at The Clairmont.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park under the direction of Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Walker, La., she lived in Beaumont many years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Charles Stafford of Virginia City, Nev., and Jerry Stafford of Beaumont; daughters, Betty Schmidt and Marie Stafford, both of Lake Station, Ind.; sisters, Eunice Phillip of Baton Rouge and Lillie Hendren of Liberty, Miss.; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Boys’ or Girls’ Haven.

ARTHUR I. SUNDAY

Arthur I. Sunday, 52, of Honey Island died Oct. 17, 2000, at Christus St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Broussard’s Mortuary in Kountze with burial at Village Mills Cemetery in Village Mills. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.

A native of Raymondville, he lived in Kountze several years and was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Sherry Darlene Sunday of Honey Island; sons, Scott Sunday of Silsbee, Richard Sunday of Honey Island and Sammy Reynolds of Garden City, Kan.; daughters, Tonya Breaux and Suzette Talley, both of Kountze, and Theresa Bryant of Yigo, Guam; mother, Susie Lee Sunday of Crosby; brothers, Grady Sunday of Dayton, Stevie Sunday of Segno, Curtis Sunday of Lufkin and Phillip Sunday of Crosby; sisters, Eara Lee Ward of Houston, Judy Wilson of Livingston, Lillie Hollingsworth of Daisetta and Janie Goodwater of Coldspring; and nine grandchildren.

DORIS MARIE ROBERTS TANNERY

Doris Marie Roberts Tannery, 75, of Conroe died Oct. 17, 2000, in Conroe.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Cashner Funeral Home in Conroe with burial at Garden Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native and former resident of San Augustine, she lived in Conroe several years.

Survivors include her husband, O.E. "Gene’’ Tannery of Conroe; daughters, Patricia Ann Wellborn of Spring and Sandra Bowden of Conroe; son, Gregory E. "Greg’’ Tannery of Conroe; and seven grandchildren.

SUSIE TRAHAN

Susie Trahan, 78, of Orange died Oct. 12, 2000, at her residence.

Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Orange with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery under the direction of Colonial Memorial Chapel in Orange. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday with a rosary to be recited at 7 p.m. at the church.

A native of Mowata, La., she was a longtime resident of Orange.

Survivors include her daughter, Coretta Ambers of Orange; sons, Tommy Lee Trahan, Earl J. Trahan, Harry Trahan, Burt Trahan and Peter Trahan, all of Orange, and Michael Trahan of Houston; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

FANNIE TURNER

Fannie Turner, 90, of Fort Worth died Oct. 17, 2000, at HIS Benbrook Nursing Home in Benbrook.

Funeral will be at 1:30 a.m. Friday at Clayton-Thompson Funeral Home with burial at China Cemetery in China. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of Walker, La., and former resident of Port Arthur for 65 years, she lived in Fort Worth seven years and was a homemaker.

Survivors include her sons, Edward Turner of League City and Max Turner of Santa Fe, N.M.; daughter, Zemley Turner of Fort Worth; and brother, Redrick Courtney of Walker; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

BERNARD J. ‘BEN’ WEISZ

Bernard J. "Ben’’ Weisz, 63, of Dayton died Oct. 16, 2000, in Dayton.

Funeral will be at 6 p.m. Friday at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

A native of St. Stephen, Minn., and a former resident of Memphis, Mich., he lived in the Dayton area 18 years and was a retired Beeline truck driver in LaPorte. He also was a retired assistant fire chief and a Korean War U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include his mother, Claire Weisz of Foley, Minn.; sons, Dale Weisz of McCalla, Ala., Andy Butterfield and Iree Butterfield, both of Memphis, and Tracy Butterfield of Humble; daughters, Irene Pointkowski of Memphis, Terri Weisz of Baytown and Sandy Durant of Port Huron, Mich.; brothers, Tony Weisz of Sarasota, Fla., and David Weisz and Virgil Weisz, both of Foley; sisters, Joyce Bergh of St. Cloud, Minn., JoAnn Weisz of Foley, Jennette Staussenjer of Duluth, Minn., and Yvonne Boyette of Dayton; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

THELMA OPHELIA WILLIAMS

Thelma Ophelia Williams, 94, of Boerne died Oct. 17, 2000, in Boerne.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. today at Desdemona Cemetery in Desdemona under the direction of Vaughan’s Funeral Home in Boerne. Visitation was Wednesday at the funeral home.

A native of Big Sandy, Tenn., and a former resident of Beaumont, she lived Boerne three years.

Survivors include her son, Robert M. Williams of Wharton; daughters, Billye Lou Whitt of Beaumont and Patricia Cole of Boerne; sisters, Betty Ownby of Graham and Ann Gray of San Bernardino, Calif.; brothers, Bob Patterson of Graham and Roy Patterson of Gustine; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hill Country Family Services, 118 W. Advogt, Boerne, Texas 78006.

MARY ATWOOD

Mary Atwood, 86, of Hamshire died Oct. 17, 2000, at Memorial Hermann Baptist Beaumont Hospital.

Funeral will be Thursday morning at First Baptist Church in Hamshire with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Winnie under the direction of Broussard’s Mortuary in Winnie. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary.

A native of Elkhart, she lived in Hamshire 52 years.

Survivors include her son, Ted Atwood of Beaumont; daughters, Peggy Atwood of Beaumont, Mary Ward of Austin, Myra Selmser of Friendswood, Sarah Bardwell of Fannett and Andrea Sticker of Nederland; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
