Nancy J. Smithwick

Graveside services for Nancy J. Smithwick, 79, of Westcliff, Colo., will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7 at the San Saba City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at Howell-Doran Funeral Home in San Saba.

Mrs. Smithwick died Saturday, April 3, 2004 in Pueblo, Colo.

She was born August 1, 1924, in California, the daughter of Joe S. Clark and Farybel Walters Clark. On July 7, 1942, she married Jack Smithwick in Long Beach, Calif. He preceded her in death October 8, 1997.

Survivors include three children, Jack Smithwick and wife, Lenice, of Florence, Texas; Peggy Gillum of Westcliff, Colo. and Larry Smithwick and wife, Joy, of Frisco, Colo.; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Joe Clark, on March 28, 2004.

Donald R. Jones Sr

MAY -- Donald R. Jones Sr., 83, passed away peacefully at Brownwood Regional Medical Center on Sunday, April 4, 2004.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Opal Loveta Smart Jones; his sons, Tommy and wife Becky, Don Jr. and his wife Sue, Charles, Vernon and his wife Virginia; grandchildren, David, Delena, Brent, Grant, Jennifer, Kevin, Shawn, Jeremy; great grandchildren Alfonzo and Michaila; and his sister Betty Jones Galaway and her husband Mike. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law Pearl Shank, Marylou Liles and husband Spencer, Martha Boiles, Hattie Keys and husband Clint, Wanda McEwen and husband Don, Malta Seaton, Barbara Herpeche and husband Dempsey, Heloise Smart, Zoann Skillen, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Jasper Milton Jones, his mother Lucille Foster Jones, and seven other brothers and sisters, Lottie Lucille Jones Clemmer, Alyene Jones Main, Georgia Bell Jones Thornton, John K. Jones, Katherine Faith Jones Moore, Oscar Dell Jones, and Barbara Helen Jones Whitt.

Don was born in Dekalb, Texas, on June 5, 1920. He joined the Army in World War II and fought with the 64th Infantry Battalion in the Western Pacific Theater, surviving seven beach assault landings, and was part of the occupational forces in Japan after the war. He began his career after the war working for several building and hardware companies before settling in Abilene and working for West Texas Wholesale Supply Company. He moved his family to May in 1964 and retired in 1979, after 27 years with West Texas Wholesale.

Don lived his life to the fullest and upon retiring spent his time fishing and gardening. He was a member of the Brownwood Farmers Market for 19 years.

Our heartfelt thanks to all our friends and extended family for their love and compassion and to Don's final caregivers for their concern and attentiveness.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 6, at the United Methodist Church in May. Visitation will be today, April 5, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Tuesday from 8 a.m. to noon at Higginbotham Funeral Home in Rising Star. At Don's request cremation will take place after the funeral service.

Ruby Ethel Lewallen Halford

Memorial services for Ruby Ethel Lewallen Halford, 89, of Brady, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, April 9 in "the South Room" in the Family Life Center of Oak Hills Church of Christ, 19595 I-10 West, San Antonio with Dennis McDonald officiating. Private interment will be held in the Live Oak Cemetery in Brady under the direction of the Leatherwood Memorial Chapels.

Mrs. Halford died Sunday, March 28, 2004, in Brady.

She was born Feb. 2, 1915, in Doole to Henry M. Shuffield and Nettie C. (Partin) Shuffield. She married Allen Lew Lewallen on Jan. 2, 1936. He preceded her in death. She married John Halford on June 30, 1967, in Odessa.

Survivors include one son, Joe B. Lewallen Sr. of Bellville, Texas; one daughter Lynnette E. Long and husband, Tommy, of San Antonio; one brother, Clayton Shuffield of Odessa; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law and one great nephew.

She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; four brothers and one sister.

Lillie Waisman

Lillie Waisman was born July 15, 1912, in Dublin, Texas, and died peacefully April 2, 2004. She attended the University of Texas before moving to Dallas where she met her husband Sammie Waisman. They lived for 35 years in Brownwood, where they owned Waisman's Department Store.

Lillie had an enjoyment for work and a strong sense of public service.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Sammie. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Terry and Harmon Cohen of Dallas, son and daughter-in-law, Dr. Jerry Waisman and Lenore Gale of New York City; sister, Minnie Siegel; sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Jack Wiles; sister-in-law, Stella Novit; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren, and two great great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, April 4, 2004, at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Dallas. Please call Sparkman/Hillcrest for the time at (214) 363-5401. Alton Monroe Beaty

Funeral services for Alton Monroe Beaty, 80, longtime resident of Comanche County, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, April 5 at the Hall & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Jackie Auvenshine and Gerald Burns officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of the Hall & Sons Funeral Home of Comanche.

Mr. Beaty died Friday, April 2, 2004, at his home.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Downing to the late Daniel Beaty and Dona Mae Lindsey Beaty. He married Annie Nelson on Nov. 20, 1941, in Comanche County. He was an automobile upholsterer and car dealer. He owned and operated Beaty's Used Cars and Trim Shop and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Comanche.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Annie Beaty of Comanche; five sons, Dan Beaty and wife, Sue, of Arlington, Joe Beaty and wife, Nancy, of Comanche, Wayne Beaty and wife, Gloria, of Stephenville, Paul Beaty of Dublin and Ron Beaty and wife, Pattie, of Cleburne; two daughters, Wanda Hall and husband, Weldon, of Comanche and Lana Grand and husband, Dennis, of Merkel; one sister, Dorothy Burks and husband, Harold, of Brownwood; one brother, Tom Beaty and wife, Jimmie, of Lake Kiowa; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one daughter, Lou Ann Basham in 1986 and one sister, Allene Bausell in 1972.

Pallbearers will be grandsons and spouses of granddaughters.

Family visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening at the Hall & Sons Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Comanche Community Health Care Hospice, 108 West Oak, Comanche, Texas 76442.

Matilda A. Emert

Funeral services for Matilda A. Emert, 84, of Brownwood, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8 in the Comanche Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park in Early. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at the Comanche Funeral Home.

Mrs. Emert died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Eloise Wisdom Williams

DESDEMONA -- Funeral services for Eloise Wisdom Williams, 72, of Desdemona, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8 at Desdemona First Baptist Church with Jackie Auvenshine officiating assisted by Gary Hughes. Interment will follow in Garden of Memory Cemetery in Desdemona under the direction of the Nowlin Funeral Home.

Mrs. Williams died Sunday, April 4, 2004, at her residence.

She was born Nov. 17, 1931, in Cheaney Community in Eastland County to the late David E. Wisdom and Hazel Buckley Wisdom. She married Leo C. Williams on Jan. 23, 1949, in Desdemona.

Survivors include her husband, Leo Williams of Desdemona; son, David Clayton Williams of Cache, Okla.; three daughters, Donna Moore of Strawn, Delores Helms of Hico and Enid Williams and husband Paul Yanko of Akron, Ohio; brother, Bobby D. Wisdom of Desdemona; sister, Patsy Kincanon of Hico; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Joyce Thornhill.

Family visitation will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at Nowlin Funeral Home.

Melvin Storm

Funeral services for Melvin Storm, 82, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8 at the Central United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in the Eastlawn Memorial Park under the direction of the Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Storm died Monday, April 5, 2004, at a local nursing facility.

Nell B. Mitchell

Graveside services for Nell B. Mitchell, 75, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 p.m. today, Wednesday, April 7, at Greenleaf Cemetery in Brownwood with the Rev. Lynn Starnes officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Mitchell died April 5, 2004, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

She was born April 12, 1928, in Brownwood. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church and had been a resident of the community since 1981. She was a retired civil service cashier. She married Richard Mitchell in Brownwood on Oct. 17, 1972.

Survivors include her mother, Beatrice Dwight of Brownwood; one son, James Allen Campbell and wife, Sally, of Carterville, Ill.; one daughter, Linda Karen Powers and husband, Rick, of Brownwood; seven grandchildren; one brother, John Bailey Anderson and wife, Jeannette, of Dumas; two sisters, Gwen and husband, Dean White of Brownwood and Jo and husband, Jerry Dunn of Deer Park and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, James Archie Campbell and Richard Mitchell; one son, John Michael Campbell and one grandson, James Austin Campbell.

Melvin Storm

Funeral services for Melvin Storm, 82, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8 at Central United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7 at the funeral home.

Mr. Storm died Monday, April 5, 2004, at a local nursing facility.

He was born on June 25, 1921 in the Clabber Hill community of Brown County, the son of Stanley R. and Ethel Lee Storm and was a lifelong resident of Brown County. He graduated from Brookesmith High School, attended Daniel Baker College and graduated from the Landig College of Mortuary Science in Houston. He worked at Davis-Morris Funeral Home in Brownwood for 55 years, from 1939 until his retirement in 1994. Mr. Storm married Mary Lou McIver in November, 1946 and they had been married 58 years at the time of his death.

He co-founded the Directors Investment Group and Funeral Directors Life Insurance Co., both out of Abilene.

He was a World War II veteran and served as a United States Marine in the South Pacific from 1942 until 1945.

Mr. Storm was past president of the Brownwood Kiwanis Club; past president of the Brown County Fair Association and Youth Fair; past captain of the Brown County Sheriff's Posse; past chairman of the Child Welfare Board; past chairman of the local Red Cross and was a former director on the United Way board, the Heart of Texas Girl Scout Council and the Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce.

He was also the past president of the West Texas Funeral Directors Association and the Texas Funeral Directors Association. He was honored as the "Outstanding Citizen over 35 Years of Age" in Brownwood in 1974 and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the Texas Funeral Directors in 1977. He received the Daniel Baker College Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1992.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou McIver Storm; their sons, Stephen R. Storm and his wife, Bebe, of Brandon, Miss.; Loy M. Storm and his wife, Patricia, of Brownwood; their daughters, Judy K. Bowers of Tallahassee, Fla.; Betty S. Alvey and her husband, Ron, of Irving and Ann M. Swanson and her husband, Philip, of Irving; a sister, Ona Lee Sansom of Kerrville; 18 grandchildren, including Mathew Storm and his wife, Sarah; Melissa and husband Morris Wiltshire, Mark and his wife Jennifer Storm; Marcia and her husband Chuck Woods, Margaret Storm, Emily Storm, Meri Storm, Megan Storm, Mallory Storm, Elizabeth Bowers and her husband, Kevin Manderville; Beverly Bowers and her husband Jaime Escuder; Ashley Storm, Jake and his wife, Wendy Storm; Hunter Storm, Claire Storm, Debi Alvey, August Swanson and Ethan Swanson; and two great grandchildren, Ashlyn Storm and Mia Wiltshire.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Beverly Lou Storm.

Matilda A. Emert

EARLY -- Funeral services for Matilda A. Emert, 84, of Brownwood, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 8, in Comanche Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Eastlawn Memorial Park, Early, Texas under the direction of the Comanche Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004 in Comanche Funeral Home.

Mrs. Emert died Monday morning, April 5 in the Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

She was born on July 16, 1919, in Salina, Texas to Robert and Bonnie Loftice Webb. On October 11, 1957, she married Martin L. Emert in Denver City, Texas.

Matilda had previously lived in the Beattie Community in Comanche County and assisted her husband in the Emert Fire Extinguisher Company for over 30 years. Upon their retirement they moved to Brownwood in 1988. She was a member of the Pompey Mountain Congregational Methodist Church, the Beattie Quilting Club, Brownwood Rebekah Lodge #26, and Brownwood IOOF #219. She contributed a hand-made quilt to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center each year for 19 years.

She is survived by her husband, Martin L. Emert of Brownwood, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Inez and Bobby New of Magnolia, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Ken and Fay Green of Brownwood, Texas; grandchildren, Garland New of Alvin, Texas; Sue Dumas and husband David of Magnolia, Texas; Dr. Lisa New-Freeland and husband Charles of Charleston, Illinois; Dee Anne Wood and husband Larry of Fort Worth, Texas; and Jeffrey Green of Spring, Texas. Also surviving are great-grandchildren Kenny Wood of Fort Worth; Nikki Green-Cristan of Texas City, Texas; Jade and husband Michael Dobbs, of Richmond, Texas and Cody Dumas of Magnolia, Texas; Chelsea Freeland of Charleston, Ill.; Shelbie New of Alvin, Texas; and Rowdy Freeland of Charleston, Illinois; and Morgan Wood of Fort Worth, Texas; great-great-grandchildren, Bear and Ryanne Dobbs of Richmond, Texas; and Angelina Marie Cristan of Texas City, Texas. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Donna Queen and husband John of Fort Worth, Texas; brother, Dr. Robert Webb, Jr. and his wife Roma of Round Rock, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Emert was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Green; son, Donald Green; granddaughter, Kelly Green and grandson Dewey Green. Also preceding her in death were her parents Robert and Bonnie Loftice Webb; brother, James Webb; and sister, Ruth Webb Christopher.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Beattie Quilting Club, 2131 Highway 2247, Comanche, Texas 76442; or the West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford Street, Abilene, Texas 79605.

Bernice Harris

Funeral services for Bernice Harris, 84, of Brownwood, are set for 11 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2004 in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery. Mrs. Harris died Tuesday, April 6, 2004 in a Dallas hospital. Davis-Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Johnny Lee Cate

Funeral services for Johnny Lee Cate, 76, of Brownwood, will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, April 8, at Rocky Creek Baptist Church of Brownwood with the Rev. Rick Justice officiating. Interment will follow in the Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park in Colleyville, Texas, at 4 p.m. under the direction of the Davis-Morris Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at the funeral home.

Mr. Cate died Monday, April 5, 2004, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

He was born Dec. 31, 1927, in Brown County. He was a member of Rocky Creek Baptist Church and had lived in Brownwood for 30 years. He was retired from the City of Fort Worth Fire Department and had served in the U.S. Army. He married Sylvia Lamkin in Brown County on Feb. 21, 1980.

Survivors include his mother, Viola Cate of Haltom City; his wife, Sylvia Cate of Brownwood; two daughters, Melinda Aten and husband Robert, of Briar, Texas and Diana Emrick of North Richland Hills; two sons, Hollis Cate and wife Margaret, of North Richland Hills and David Emrick and wife Sheila, of Lawrenceburg, Ind.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; five sisters, Audrey Dollar of North Richland Hills, Rita Patterson of North Richland Hills, Joyce Melber of North Richland Hills, Carolyn Smith of Haltom City and Marion Ella of Fort Worth; one brother, James Cate of Haltom City; one uncle, Hollis Pace of Lake Brownwood and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, James E. Cate.

Glorris A. "Dale" Wolford

Graveside funeral services for Glorris A. "Dale" Wolford, 79, of Brownwood will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 7, 2004 in Greenleaf Cemetery with Rev. Ellis J. Villareal, of Milton Avenue Baptist Church, officiating. Services are under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home of Brownwood.

Mrs. Wolford died on Tuesday, April 6, 2004 in Brownwood. She was born on Feb. 3, 1925 in Coleman County to Alfred and Gertie Williams Furry. She married Dale Wolford in Texarkana, Ark. on May 7, 1944. Dale worked at Bangs Nursing Home for 17 years as an administrator. She was a member of Milton Avenue Baptist Church.

She is survived by her daughter Pat Lemmons and husband, Travis, of Mansfield, son Bob Wolford and wife, Deborah of San Saba, two grandchildren, Shaylor Wolford and wife Heather and Shannon Nobles and her husband Marc; two great-grandsons, Shaylor and Hayden Wolford.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Geraldine Patton.

Mrs. Bernice Bonner Harris

"A precious one from us is gone. A voice we love is still. A place is vacant in our hearts, that never can be filled."

Bernice Bonner Harris was born on Aug. 12, 1919, in Bellville, Texas to the late Theodore and Annie Bonner. She grew up and was educated in Bellville schools. She departed this life on Tuesday, April 6, 2004.

She was joined in holy matrimony to John Willie Harris, who preceded her in death. They moved to Brownwood in 1939, from Bellville and lived a happy, loving life for a number of years. To this union, two loving and devoted sons, Ted and James, were born.

She confessed Christ at an early age. She was a faithful and devoted member of Lee Chapel AME Church for many years. She worked for many years for the Brownwood ISD, until she retired. After her retirement, she remained devoted to Brownwood High School and her community for many years. Mrs. Harris was admired by many and touched many lives for 65 years in Brownwood.

She leaves to cherish her memory, two devoted sons, Theodore "Ted" Harris and Verdie, of Waxahachie and James Harris and Gladys, of Dallas; one sister, Helen Davis of The Colony, Texas; two grandsons, Theodore Harris and Teddy, of New Orleans, La. and John Harris of Austin; four granddaughters, Bernita Robinson of Arlington, Jamiee Smith of Bowlbrook, Ill., Jackie Harris of Dallas and Cornelius Brewer of Dallas; one niece, Annette Woodfork-Hall of The Colony, Texas. She also leaves four great-granddaughters; four great-grandsons; two great-nieces; and a host of many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services for Bernice Harris, 84, of Brownwood, are set for 11 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2004 in Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Greenleaf Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Doris Natalie Gray Mays

SAN SABA -- Funeral services for Doris Natalie Gray Mays, 85, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the Howell-Doran Funeral Home Chapel in San Saba with the Rev. Ben Hubert officiating. Interment will follow in the San Saba City Cemetery under the direction of Howell-Doran Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Friday, preceding the service, at the funeral home.

Mrs. Mays died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, in San Angelo.

She was born on March 27, 1919, in Crosbyton, Texas, the daughter of Mary Jane Potts Gray and Oliver Gray.

Survivors include her daughters, Cheri Inglis of Abilene and Pam McGowen of San Angelo; son, Buddy Mays of Coleman; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary Jane Potts Gray and Oliver Gray; her brother, J. G. Gray and her husband, Alvin Mays.

Margaret Lue Dixon

Funeral services for Margaret Lue Dixon, 88, of Brownwood, will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel in Brownwood with Dr. Art Allen officiating. Interment will follow in the Cedar Point Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dixon died April 7, 2004, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 8, at the funeral home.

Margaret was born on March 15, 1916, in Abilene, the daughter of the late Joseph and Maggie Pardue Heleman. She married J. W. Dixon in Abilene on May 29, 1937. She was a retired State School employee and a member of Southside Baptist Church. She had lived in Brownwood since 1956.

Survivors include her daughter, Carolyn F. Banta and husband, Riley, of Brownwood; two sons, Waylon Dixon and wife, Nevelyn, of Brownwood and Harold Dixon also of Brownwood; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Maggie Pardue Heleman; her husband; and 11 brothers and sisters.

Nina Pearl McGahey

SANTA ANNA -- Nina Pearl McGahey, 82 of Santa Anna, passed away at 3:40 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Brownwood Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Henderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Raymond Jones officiating. Interment will follow in the Santa Anna Cemetery under the direction of Henderson Funeral Home of Santa Anna.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the funeral home.

Nina Pearl was born on Feb. 9, 1922, in Coleman County, to the late James Miles and Edna Elsie Gunn Nichols. She was raised in Coleman County attending the Coleman Schools. On Dec. 26, 1939, Nina married Aura Linton McGahey, Jr. in Coleman and they celebrated 58 years of marriage. A. L. preceded her in death in 1997. Nina has been a resident of Santa Anna since 1986. She was a member of the Pentecostal Church and a homemaker.

Survivors include her daughter, Linda Vasquez of Brownwood; sister, Louise Peavy of Houston; brother, Leroy Nichols of Big Spring; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Lorena "Peggy" Bonser

COMANCHE -- Funeral services for Lorena "Peggy" Bonser of Comanche will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Comanche Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Van Christian officiating. Interment will follow in the Oakwood Cemetery in Comanche under the direction of Comanche Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bonser died Thursday, April 8, 2004, in Fort Worth.

She was born in Sulphur Springs, the daughter of William Allen Thornton and Louella Payne Thornton.

Survivors include her daughter, Juanita Bain of Arlington; three grandsons; two granddaughters; one granddaughter-in-law; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Scott Bain in October of 1989 and son-in-law, Kenneth Bain, in August of 1993.
