Adrianus Cornelius "Kees" Jobsis

ADRIANUS CORNELIUS "KEES" JOBSIS, beloved husband, father and grandfather, departed this life on March 30, 2008. Born on September 21, 1929, Kees was a charismatic adventurer and romantic, with a brilliant, creative and intuitive mind, vibrant personality, sharp wit, and kind and generous heart. His passions included travel, exploration, nature, sailing, diving, music, and the literary and visual arts. An admired and respected civil engineer with Royal Dutch Shell and later Texaco, Kees was also an accomplished artist, creating poems, stories, writings, drawings, paintings, and photographs of remarkable insight and sensitivity. Born to Dutch parents, Annie Gieben and Gerrit Jobsis, on Billiton Island, Indonesia (then part of the Dutch East Indies), Kees enjoyed an idyllic early childhood as part of a privileged family within a refined Dutch colonial community (his father was a senior executive with the Dutch Billiton Tin Company). Kees roamed and explored his beloved island with unbridled freedom and childish wonder. It was there that Kees developed deep respect and appreciation of nature and cultural differences. While Kees was known for his strong will and sometime rebellious spirit, he was universally adored, with his elementary school teacher (who often referred to him as "the little rascal") still chuckling about his antics and fondly corresponding with him regularly into old age. Kees' idyllic early childhood on Billiton Island came to an abrupt end during World War II at age 13, when Kees and his family were separated and forced into concentration camps by the Japanese. Kees survived the horrors and trauma of his incarceration through wits, inner strength and fighting spirit. Sadly, Kees never saw his father again. While the torture he was forced to endure and witness haunted him for life, he never allowed it to define his existence and seldom spoke of the experiences. That determination to survive enabled him to rise like a phoenix from the ashes again and again throughout his life. Ever the flamboyant, charismatic romantic, he followed his dreams and lived life to its fullest. With fierce determination, he accelerated his education from the years lost. Brilliant mathematically, he earned undergraduate and advanced degrees in science in both the Netherlands and the United States. He became a highly successful civil engineer, troubleshooting and managing projects for Texaco throughout the world. He also had an academic post with the Institute of Technology in the Middle East. During his career, he was accredited several patents and awards for his inventions, designs and contributions in the energy industry. Known as a handsome charmer, Kees, along with his lovely wife, Bouk (known also as "Bea"), were gracious hosts and easily transcended cultural differences to forge lifelong international friendships. Together with their two daughters, they enjoyed an international life in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States (immigrating to the United States in 1964 and proudly becoming American citizens), eventually making Houston, Texas their home. Their marriage was a love affair lasting over 51 years. In 1976 Kees suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury, which resulted in permanent partial paralysis. He courageously fought his physical disabilities and continued to live life on his terms. He later joined the technology department at Texaco, and took up scuba diving exploring the depths and beauty of the underwater world. He called the water "the great equalizer, " and took other paralyzed friends (made during rehabilitation at TIRR) diving to experience freedom from physical limitations. After giving up their sailboats, Kees and Bouk continued to cruise and travel the world together. He adored his daughters and their families and was a genuinely loving, supportive and protective family man. He generously shared his passions with them and encouraged theirs. He was deeply loved and is greatly missed. Kees is survived by his wife, Bouk de Vries Jobsis, his daughters, Janneke Margeret Jobsis Brown and Anna Jobsis Nemeth, son-in-laws, Donald Brown and Peter Nemeth, grandchildren, Alexandra Nemeth, Nicholas Nemeth and Dakota Adrian Brown, his brother Harman Jobsis, and sister, Mechtelien de Haan-Jobsis. Kees' parents and brother Gerrit Jobsis predeceased him. The family wishes to specifically acknowledge the kind and dedicated care and compassion of Kees' cardiologist, Dr. Madjid ("Mirzai") Mirzaitehrane. A private family memorial at sea will be held. In addition, arrangements are being made for a memorial service for friends of the family to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kees' name to Texas Rehabilitation and Research ("TIRR").
