Virgil C. Fruth

VIRGIL CHARLES FRUTH Virgil was born February 5, 1925 in Lilbourne, Missouri and died at the age of 83 on February 14, 2008, in his Houston home. Houston has been home to Virgil and his family for the past 45 years. He was a devoted husband to his beloved Jeannie for 54 years and a dedicated and giving father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. Virgil was a brilliant financial investor, but he'd always worked hard too. Even as a young boy, spraying apple trees with his father, he drug a hose many times his size and weight through the orchards. Always industrious, as a youth he earned 50 cents per week, lighting the stove each day for his teacher at the schoolhouse. In 1943, Virgil graduated from Napoleon High School in Ohio. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy to Officer Candidate School. On February 19, 1944, he earned his Commission, his Ensign promotion to Officer. He learned of the honor via a congratulatory telegram sent to him by his older brother Lloyd and his wife Katy. Virgil attended and graduated from The University of Pennsylvania's highly esteemed Wharton School with a BS in Economics. He married Betty Jean Bettridge April 5, 1947 in Napoleon, Ohio; they were united in marriage in the living room of his parents, Edward Harmon and Freada Emma Fruth. Virgil worked for Gulf Oil Company for 37 years as a Financial Forecaster and Analyst. He was transferred from Toledo, Ohio, to Houston, in 1963. Retiring from Gulf in 1985, he maintained friends with many of his colleague's, even to date. While dedicated and hardworking, Virgil was never `married ' to his work. He pursued many hobbies with great passion, over the years. He was an avid and accomplished bowler. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for nearly two decades, leading Troop 177 to Philmont Scout Ranch in NM and countless other camping expeditions and Jamboree's. Virgil earned the highest leadership honor in scouting, the Silver Beaver Award, for his many years of dedicated service. Also, he and Jeannie were avid line dancers who enjoyed practicing and participating in local expositions. A master at the card games Pinochle and Euchre, he won the last Pinochle game he played on Feb 2, 2008, partnering with his son Rob, defeating his daughter Lori and son-in-law Mike; he enjoyed a rare `Double Pinochle' that game as well. There is no doubt that one of Virgil's favorite pastimes was cycling. Virgil joined the Houston Bicycle Club in 1974 and served as President for the 1977-1978 term, and as an officer in various capacities for much of the 1970's. In 1985 Virgil got his first tandem, and from then on he and Jeannie were a tandem team. Virgil was instrumental in starting the Houston Area Tandem Society (HATS) in 1986, and also had served as President. Virgil and Jeannie toured in England and all over the United States. They attended many tandem rallies including the Southwest Tandem Rally, Midwest Tandem Rally and the Northwest Tandem Rally. They also loved cycling in the Richmond/Rosenberg area as well as the Texas Hill Country. Virgil loved to bike and he and Jeannie made many long-time friends through cycling. Virgil also loved traveling and going on cruises. He and his brother Larry and wife Barbara, brother Lloyd and wife Katy, and brother Melvin and wife Marshann, often met at the Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera, Texas or in Branson, Missouri, for food, fun and family. Often they cruised together too, or he and Jeannie would travel with close friends. They cruised from the Eastern to the Western Caribbean as well as to Alaska, Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Scotland, England and Canada, making friendships that were, despite the miles, often maintained indefinitely. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannie Fruth, his son, Richard Virgil Fruth, his brother, Melvin Fruth and his parents, Edward and Freada Fruth. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Ann Fruth and her husband Mike Kupsinel, his son Robert Charles Fruth and his grandson, Jason Fruth, his daughter-in-law, Marlene Fruth and his granddaughter, Sarah Fruth, his brother Lloyd Fruth and wife Katy, his brother Larry Fruth and wife Barbara and his sister-in-law Marshann Fruth. He is also survived and will be greatly missed by his lifelong neighbor and friend, Calvin Pickard and countless other friends and neighbors. Last but not least, he is survived by his favorite grand-pup, Noah. Virgil's church family meant a great deal to him. Our family appreciates everyone at Gethsemane who embraced him after the losses of Jeannie and Richard. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chris Logothetis and his team at M.D. Anderson, including but not limited to, Geo, Cynthia, Claudette, Donnah, Valerie, Lisa and Betsy for a decade of kind and compassionate support. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Gethsemane Methodist Church, 6856 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, Texas, 77074, (713) 774-7693 for a Memorial Service, followed immediately, at the church, by fellowship and BBQ from the Swinging Door. Those wishing to honor Virgil with Memorial contributions may send them to M.D. Anderson Cancer Research or the American Heart Institute in his name.
