Alice Barbara Lane

Alice Lane was on hand for thousands of childbirths as St. Luke's 'surrogate mother'
To 'Miss Alice, ' nursing was all about people.

ALICE Lane, a nurse who helped deliver thousands of babies at St. Luke's Episcopal Hospital, has died. She was 82.

"She was kind of a surrogate mother to all her patients, " said Lane's son, Peter Johnson. She often received thank-you cards from new parents for her help in the delivery room, he added.

Born in 1926 in Worcester, Mass., she aspired to become a nurse at an early age, her son said. As a teenager during World War II, she volunteered with the Army corps in Massachusetts and got her first real glimpse into the nursing field. After graduating from high school, she pursued her passion and completed nursing school in 1948. She moved to Texas in 1956 and began working as a labor and delivery nurse at St. Luke's, her family said.

After divorcing her first husband, Rufus Johnson, she married Tom Lane in 1969. Tom Lane said she had a no-nonsense personality.

"She was hell when she was well and seldom sick. That is one of the reasons why I married her, " he said. "When we first started dating, I saw that she could make a decision."

Remembered as forthright

Friends and other family members agreed that she was forthright.

"She never minded saying what she was thinking or meant, regardless of who she was around, " said former neighbor Mary K. Ault, who lived across the street from Lane from 1972 to 2006. The two often reflected on how much the nursing field was changing, said Ault, a former pediatric nurse. "We would talk about the paperwork, and how there was less and less time to spend with patient care."

For "Miss Alice, " as she was known to colleagues and patients, nursing was about people.

"I believe had she been in government, there would have been peace throughout the world, " her son said, explaining that his mother sometimes helped resolve conflicts among other nurses at work. "She was so good with people."

Retired in 1989

Lane went on to become a nurse supervisor at St. Luke's and retired in 1989. She became an avid fan of crossword puzzles, often tackling them with a ballpoint pen over her usual breakfast of coffee and a bacon strip, her family and friends said.

She died May 23. Besides her husband and son, she is survived by a sister, Margie Rossetti, and a brother, Paul Lamoureux, as well as stepchildren Melissa Lane Allstun and Mark Lane. A memorial service was Saturday at Miller Funeral Services, 7737 Beechnut.

Julia Baranowski Sterbenz

JULIA BARANOWSKI STERBENZ, age 90, passed away May 25, 2008. Julia was born in New York on June 23, 1917 to John and Sophie (Heinz) Baranowski. She moved to Dallas, Texas in 1968 with her husband, Henry William Sterbenz Sr., and family, then to Houston in 1970, where she has lived ever since. She was a faithful and active parishioner at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She is preceded in death by Henry, her beloved husband of 45 years, who passed away in 1987. Julia is survived by her seven children, son Henry Jr., and his wife, Ann; son John and his wife, Rosemary; daughter Cecilia Murphy and her husband, Rick; daughter Mary Loredo and her husband, Lou; son Jerry and his wife, Trisha; daughter Peggy Stautberg and her husband, Jon; and daughter Elizabeth Moon and her husband, Brad; 25 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, with two more great-grandchildren on the way. Julia also leaves behind her sister, Helen Farrell, and two brothers, John and William Baranowski, numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. Julia's greatest love was for her family, and her pride in each and every family member was evident in her smile whenever she spoke of them. Over the years, she and her husband had loved to travel around the U.S., visiting their children and grandchildren. Julia also was an avid reader and was constantly busy with her books and magazines. She very much enjoyed listening to her favorite shows on public television; and the strains of music often filled her apartment (especially Lawrence Welk and Roy Orbison). In addition, Julia truly loved her church. She served it well for many years, volunteering in the Twice Blessed thrift store, tutoring children in reading, working at the annual church bazaars, leading the prayer team ministry, and participating in retreats and study groups. Her loving nature and generous giving of herself will be dearly missed by the many lives she touched. The viewing and rosary will take place on Thursday, May 29 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 8002 Roos, at 7 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on Friday, May 30, also at St. Francis de Sales, at 4 p.m. Julia's remains will be laid to rest at Forest Park cemetery in Houston. There will be no graveside service. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, they would appreciate donations made in Julia's honor to St. Francis de Sales Church, Clarewood House, the American Cancer Society, or the charity of your own choosing.

Neita W. Faulkner

NEITA WILD FAULKNER, 96, passed away after a brief struggle with cancer on August 20, 2009. She was an extraordinary lady, caring, giving and quietly selfless. Neita was a world traveler, bridge player, social butterfly and always "en vogue". Her great sense of humor and joy for living endeared her to all. Her greatest fulfillment, however, was being a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother - family was always first. Neita was born July 1, 1913 to John and Fannie Holmes in Pilot Point, Texas, but grew up in Tioga, Texas (with the cowboy Gene Autry). After attending the University of Oklahoma, she taught school until her marriage to Dr. William B. Wild in 1934. They resided in Pampa, Texas for several years before moving to Pasadena, Texas. There she helped develop many youth programs, worked with the Boy Scouts, numerous charitable efforts, and was a founding member of the Pasadena Little Theater. She was a life-long Presbyterian, her last church home being the First Presbyterian Church of Houston. Neita is survived by her two sons, Drs. Bill and Tom Wild and their wives, Elpidia and Karla; two stepsons, David Woodlock and Staley Faulkner; three grandchildren, Kim Lockwood, Terry Moorhead, and Jennifer Gillis along with seven great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by husbands William Wild, David Woodlock and Silar Faulkner, and grandson Thomas Wild Jr. Our heart felt thanks and appreciation to all her caretakers at Bayou Manor Health Care for the last 5 years. We are also grateful to Hospice Compassus at a very difficult time. A memorial service and reception will be held on Saturday August 29th at 2:00 PM at Bayou Manor 4141 So. Braeswood, Houston, Texas. Please send charitable contributions of your choice in lieu of flowers.
