Jesse Sidney Martin
January 07, 1924 - September 21, 2010

Jesse S. Martin, 86, of Stafford, TX passed away in the afternoon of September 21, 2010. He was born on January 7, 1924 in Sheldon, TX. Jesse graduated from Milby High School in May of 1942. He served in the military from 1943 to 1946. He married Mary Sue High on July 3, 1948, who would be his wife for 55 years before her passing in December, 2003. Jesse attended the University of Houston on a basketball scholarship and the G.I. Bill, and graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor's of Science and a Master's of Education.
Jesse's first coaching job was at Johnston Jr. High from 1950-1953, where he coached football and track. From there he went to San Jacinto High School in 1954 to coach basketball, golf, and J.V. football. During the summer months he would lifeguard, teach swimming lessons, and conduct a youth program at Lakeside Country Club. From 1960-1968, Jesse coached football, golf, and varsity basketball at Waltrip High School, winning the city championship in basketball in 1966 and 1967.
From 1968-1969, he served as elementary P.E. supervisor for HISD before becoming principal of Cooley Elementary School. He stayed at Cooley until 1974 when he transferred to Neff Elementary as their new principal until his retirement in 1987. Working with the students and teachers at the elementary level provided great joy for him. He missed everyone very much and spoke highly of his staff following retirement.
Coach Martin is survived by three brothers, Foster, Lawrence, and Alfred; brother-in-law, Carl High; son, Phil and wife Susan; son, Steve; and son, John and wife Nancy; and grandsons, Matthew and Michael.
A Memorial Gathering will be held Friday, October 1, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. at Miller Funeral Services, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77074. A Graveside Service and inurnment will take place at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 2, 2010 at Forest Park Westheimer cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial contributions to The American Cancer Society.

Joseph F. Balius
June 24, 1939 - September 04, 2010

Joseph F. Balius, 71, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Saturday, September 4, 2010. He died in Houston, TX with his wife, Marie, and his daughter, Candace by his side.
Joseph was born on June 24, 1939, in Biloxi, MS to Rudolph and Mildred Demoruelle Balius. A lifelong resident of the coast, Joe was a star athlete at Biloxi HS. He lettered in football, baseball, basketball and track. It was on the football field where Joe really set himself apart. The Herald often referred to him as 'Joltin Joe', he was an All-American quarterback excelling as a runner, passer, defensive back and place-kicker. He earned a football scholarship to MSU.
Joe was a family man and worked as a roofer for 29 years. He and Marie raised a beautiful daughter, Candace, and Joe helped raise his step-daughter, Andrea. His passion for athletics carried over into his family life teaching his girls both to play sports and have a working knowledge of the game. An avid outdoorsman, Joe loved to hunt, fish and spend time at the camp. He was a great cook and didn't ever need a recipe. Joe never met a stranger and valued his friends greatly.
Joe was preceded in death by his father, Rudolph; his beloved mother, Mildred; and brother, Warren. His is survived by his wife, Marie; his daughter, Candace Adkins and her husband, Jason; step-daughter, Andrea Crawmer and her husband Bob; daughters, Tina Sullivan, Laurie Guise; and sister, Linda Godsey; along with many nieces, nephews and four grandchildren.
A visitation with the family will be held Monday, September 13, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima, 2090 Pass Road, Biloxi, MS, with a Memorial Mass to be held at 11:00 a.m., and reception immediately following at the church. A private interment will take place at Biloxi cemetery later that day. In lieu of flowers, the family requests Mass Intentions be offered on behalf of Joseph Balius. We will miss him deeply until we are joyfully reunited forever in Paradise, with our God who loves us so much!

Frank L. Campbell
May 31, 1921 - September 29, 2010

Frank Lee Campbell, 89, retired police officer and WWII military veteran, died September 29, 2010. He was born to Thomas Finley Seney Dora Burfiend on May 31, 1921, Hamlin, TX. Upon graduation from Hamlin High School, he joined the U.S. Army serving as a sergeant with the military police during World War II. After the military, he served the Houston Police Dept. as a sergeant until he retired. From there he served the River Oaks Police as a sergeant.
He married Dovie Louise Grubb on October 11, 1944. They were blessed with 65 years of marriage.
Frank is survived by his loving wife, and his children, Donna Oden (Dennis); F. Wayne Campbell (Audrey); and Sherry Morris (Ramon); and all their 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Frank, known as the 'Candy Man' and the 'Hugger' was the ultimate example of someone who lived to serve others. He spent many years serving as a Deacon at First Baptist Church, and was always ready with a helping hand to anyone who needed it.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 6, 2010 with a reception to follow in the Chapel of First Baptist Church, 7401 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77024. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Star of Hope Ladies Mission or the Children's Center, both through First Baptist Church.

Jarrett Warrick Harper
May 20, 1975 - August 11, 2010

JARRETT WARRICK HARPER, 35, was born May 20, 1975 in Nashville, TN, and went to be with the Lord on August 14, 2010.Those left to cherish the fond memories and everlasting love of this educated, easy going, spirit-filled young man are his dedicated mother and father, J.W. and Elizabeth Harper of Houston, TX; his loving brother, Harvey Harper (Jacqueline) of Houston, TX; and a host of loving family members and friends, as well as the Word of Faith Church in Austell, GA.A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Windsor Village United Methodist Church, 6000 Heatherbrook Drive, Houston, TX 77085. Jack 'John' Herbert Westerland born September 24, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois died August 29, 2010 at the age of 87. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty; and their three daughters and spouses: Sandra David Dotter, Julie Rick Goolsby, and Wendy Westerland; and his seven grandchildren. Before retirement Jack was a real estate broker and worked in radio. He was also a Third Degree Mason and member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 2, 2010, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., with a Funeral Service to follow on Friday, September 3, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Miller Funeral Chapel, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77074. Interment will be at Forest Park Westheimer cemetery.

Louise M. Parsons
August 21, 1921 - September 18, 2010

LOUISE ROSS-PARSONS passed away September 18, 2010. She was born August 21, 1921 to Albert G. and Rose Miller in Chicago, Illinois. She resided in Houston, Texas for 60 years and was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Rose Miller; her sister, Rose Austin; and her son, Ernie Paul Ross. She is survived by sons, Fred and wife Mary Ross of Richmond, TX; and George Albert Ross of Bellaire, TX; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; also many nieces and nephews. She was a loving mother and grandmother, a strong independent woman who was kind and generous to others.
A Memorial Gathering will be held Thursday, September 30, 2010 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Chapel, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77074. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial gifts to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.

Pamela Ann Burgess

Pamela Ann Hatzenbuehler Burgess, 68, of Pearland, TX, died October 7, 2010. Her final days were spent surrounded by family and friends who loved her. She is survived by her mother, Bonnie Hatzenbuehler; brother, John Hatzenbuehler and wife Pam; nieces, nephews, brother-in-law, cousins, and her two beloved Bichons, Charlie and Angel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mike Burgess; and her sister, Nan Helmcamp. She will be missed greatly by all.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, October 23, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Chapel. James Lee Carley
September 28, 1947 - September 24, 2010

James (Jim) L. Carley, 62, passed away on Friday September 24, 2010. He was born on September 28, 1947 in Flushing NY to Clyde and Margaret McAlister Carley. His family later moved to Broken Arrow, OK. Jim graduated from Broken Arrow High School in 1965.
Jim had a passionate love of music, both as an avid listener and as a performer. In Tulsa after high school, Jim played in some rock and roll bands. He was the lead singer in a band called Bo Velvet and the Desert Snakes. Jim also had an avid passion for sports and excelled as an athlete in his early life. He had an expansive career as a highly respected sportswriter. His interest in writing and his fascination with the world of journalism was passed down from his father, Clyde Carley, who had also excelled as an accomplished writer and journalist. Jim's initiation into the world of newspapers began at the Broken Arrow Ledger. He later went on to work for the Tulsa Tribune, Fort Worth Star Telegram, the Houston Post, Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, and the National Sports Daily. In his later years he worked for the Katy Sun, and he also wrote for various magazines including The Sporting News and Street and Smith's. For years he also wrote stories for the Associated Press, MLB.com and Texans.com. In his career which spanned over four decades, Jim has interviewed and written stories covering just about every major sports figure and event. This includes numerous bowl games from the Orange, Cotton, Sugar, Sun, Liberty and Fiesta Bowls, as well as two Super Bowls, two USFL championships, one World Series, three NBA finals, several College World Series, countless major league baseball games and hundreds of NFL and NBA games.
With the demise of many newspapers in recent years, Jim transitioned into television news writing four years ago. At the time of his passing, he was working as an associate producer for the local Fox station in Houston and was still doing some occasional freelance sportswriting on the side.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Margaret Carley; and his sisters, Ann and Mia. He is survived by his 2 children, Caycee of Houston, TX; Tommy and his wife, Jill of Cypress, TX. Jim was especially proud of his 2 grandchildren, Jackson, 7 and Kathryn, 4 of Cypress, TX.
A visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., with a Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. in the Miller Funeral Chapel, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX, 77074. For those desiring, memorial gifts may be made to the American Diabetes Association or a charity of your choice.

James R. Jennings
February 17, 1931 - September 24, 2010

James R. Jennings died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of Friday, September 24, 2010 with his loving family surrounding him. He was born
February 17, 1931 in New York City and attended Xavier High School and Niagara University in New York. Jim played college basketball, but his passion was golf. He was the co-captain of the Niagara University golf team while attending college and continued playing throughout his lifetime. Jim was a First Lieutenant in the US Army.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Janet; his seven children: Colleen Dallara (husband Bob), Patrice Konarik (husband Victor), Jim Jennings, Hugh 'Bud' Jennings, Jeffrey Jennings, Rob Jennings (wife Karin) and John Jennings (wife Sonia). He will also be fondly remembered by his 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He was a family icon and teacher of 'life lessons'. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 9, 2010 in the Miller Funeral Chapel, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX, 77074. Reception for friends and family will follow at Colleen Dallara's house at 5821 Grape St., Houston, TX, 77074.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that those desiring make memorial contributions to Resolutions Hospice, 8305 Knight Road, Houston, TX 77054 for the special care they administered during Jim's final days.

Thomas Benkenstein Jr.
April 25, 1932 - September 16, 2010

Thomas Benkenstein, 78, great-grandfather and retired construction supervisor, died at home on Thursday, September 16, 2010 from respiratory failure.
Tom was born in Bayshore, Long Island, New York on April 25, 1932 to Florence and Thomas Benkenstein. He attended Patchogue High School. He and his former wife, Patricia Benkenstein, lived on Long Island and had four children before they moved to Houston in 1978.
He was later married to Sue Benkenstein for 20 years and lived in Fresno, Texas until she passed away in 2008.
Tom was a construction supervisor and consultant. He worked for Amelang/Gilchrist, an investment builder partnership, and then for Charles Barney Management Firm at 950 Echo Lane for the time he was in Houston. Tom was dedicated to his work and always on the go. In 2002, he retired at the age of 70.
In his retirement, Tom enjoyed sports and going to the games. He fished with his son, John, and grandson Johnny, attending fishing tournaments throughout the Gulf Coast. His family remembers him as a jokester. He loved to travel to Louisiana to play the slot machines, and often won. Tom was also involved at his church, New Harvest Church, and the Mustang Civic Center.
Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sue; and in-laws, Katherine and Henry Keizel. Tom is survived by his son, John Benkenstein and wife Kathy of Rosharon, Texas; daughter, Mary Ann Church and husband John of Derry, New Hampshire; daughter, Teresa Rojo and husband Stewart of Austin, Texas; and daughter, Patty Rodriguez and husband Tim of Missouri City, Texas. He is also survived by former wife, Pat Benkenstein; grandchildren, Brenda Cooper and husband Stephen; Tom Church; Johnny Benkenstein; Michael Church; Christine Benkenstein; Anthony Rodriguez; Katie Rodriguez; and Hannah Rojo; and great-granddaughter, Zoey Benkenstein. Tom was also loved by Sue's children and grandchildren. Tom is remembered by his sister, Florence 'Snooky' Carde of Patchogue; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, September 19, 2010 in the Miller Celebration of Life House, 7723 Beechnut, Houston, TX 77074. A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, September 20, 2010 at New Harvest Church, 12216 Broadway St., Pearland, TX, near the Pearland Town Center at Hwy 288 South and FM 518.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make memorial gifts in Tom's honor to The American Lung Association.
