Lucian Robb Smith, Jr. died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday March 18, 2009. He was 90 years old.
Lucian was born on March 6, 1919 in Mt. Horeb, Jefferson County, Tennessee to Lucian Robb Smith, Sr. and Christine Bradshaw Smith. He had one younger brother, Richard Lewis Smith. He grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and graduated from high school there.

He was enrolled at the University of Tennessee when the United States entered World War II. He joined the service in January of 1942 and was assigned to the Army Signal Corps attached to the Air Corps. His duty stations with the Signal Corps included Houston, the Tennessee Maneuvers in Central Tennessee, and Fort Polk, Louisiana.

Feeling as if he wasn't doing enough to help in the war effort, in the summer of 1944 he volunteered for arial gunnery in the Air Corps and was trained as a nose gunner for the B-24 "Liberator" heavy bomber. After he finished his training he was posted to Europe as a member of 8th Air Force, 2nd Air Division, 96th Wing, 466th Bomb Group, 787th Squadron stationed at Attlebridge near Norwich, East Anglia, England. After V-E day he was posted to Nellis AFB in Nevada for B-29 gunnery training however the war was over before his training was completed.

He was honorably discharged from the service in November, 1945 and returned to Knoxville and the University of Tennessee to complete his degree. He remained a life-long University of Tennessee Volunteer always interested in how his alma mater's teams were doing. He especially enjoyed rooting for the Lady Vols basketball team.
After he graduated from UT he joined the field staff of his fraternity, Delta Tau Delta, and helped rebuild Delt chapters at schools through-out the Deep South that had been hit hard by the war effort.
In August of 1949 he married Elizabeth Lowman DuPuy in Pikeville, Kentucky. Shortly afterwards he and his wife moved back to Knoxville and he entered the hardware business.

In the mid-fifties he moved with his family to Houston where he would spend the rest of his life. His work in Houston varied from hardware, to his own magazine subscription business, to working part-time in the sports department of the Houston Post. He was also involved at First Presbyterian Church and later at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church where he was a member for over 40 years.

While Lucian was a University of Tennessee Volunteer, "Volunteer" was much more than a slogan to him. He enjoyed giving of his time to help people. He was a member of The Loin's Club for over 20 years; a major project of The Lion's Club is working with the blind and visually impaired. He was involved with Meals on Wheels, whose mission is delivering meals to the homebound. He gave gallons upon gallons of blood and platelets at the Texas Medical Center Blood Bank to assist those undergoing chemotherapy and other procedures. He enjoyed singing as a member of his church's choir until his advancing age no longer allowed him this pleasure.

Lucian will be missed by his family. He was the best Dad he could be and always took joy in his children's successes.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother.
He is survived by his four children and their families: son Lucian Robb Smith, 3rd (Luke), his wife Kristin, and their son Nathan; daughter Elizabeth Bradshaw Smith Asnes, her daughter Beth Hatchett, Beth's husband Saxon, and their children Zoe and Addison; daughter Anne Constantine Smith and her daughter Grace; and daughter Jane Poates Smith. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Margie Smith of Florida, her children Lewis Smith and Pam Smith Culp, both of Tennessee, and their families.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 24th at 2pm in the chapel of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive at Blalock, reception to follow. Interment will be in Knoxville, Tennessee at a later date.
