He will always be remembered as being quick with a smile, a joke, and a bad pun. He refused to leave until he was able to see his revered OU Sooners kick the longhorns one final time. In 1978, Eric took a bicycling and hiking trip to Kauai before leaving for college, and Kauai always remained a very special place for him. He received his Bachelor of Science in Geophysics in 1982 from New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology. He received a Master of Science in Geophysics from the University of Texas at Dallas in 1990. Eric began his career when he joined McElvain Oil & Gas as a Petroleum Geophysicist after receiving his bachelor degree. In 1987 he went to work for the University of Texas in Dallas researching polarization filters for multi-component seismic data. After receiving his M.S. in 1990, he joined Oryx Energy Company as a prospect geophysicist developing exploration plays and high grading drilling locations by using shear wave surveys and fracture modeling. In 1997 he joined PGS as a Senior Geophysicist processing multi-component surveys. While at PGS he developed several methods of processing multi-component data and has co-authored several papers on the subject. He is the first inventor of US patent #6061298 "Method of Processing Multi-Component Seismic Data". Eric was open with his enthusiasm for the subject of multi-component processing which inevitably spread to his coworkers and clients. Eric and Arlene met in Santa Fe, NM on May 2, 1986. They married on a beach in Kauai on May 22, 1991. Their meeting day so cherished was celebrated year after year. Eric and Arlene were married sixteen years. Eric was an awesome father! Two of the best days of his life were when Alex and Zoe were born. Alex, ten years old, and Zoe, six years old, were the loves of his life. He so wanted to live, to have longevity, to continue experiencing their beauty and intelligence and see them thriving in their lives. He touched the lives of many children and parents through coaching soccer with FFPS and serving as an active Cub Scout Den Leader in Katy, TX. Eric gave all of us strength and courage from his inner being. This core fiber and resolve carried him over and through the ups and downs life offered. He grew from a gentle, tender-hearted child to a tender-hearted man of great quiet courage and strength, never needing to use his quick intelligence or his tall stature to intimidate or diminish. Eric saw life as a series of challenges to be attacked and often won with optimism and determination, and for these past years, months, and days he gave those who love him the gift of happiness. We will miss him always. The Madtson family acknowledges with heartfelt gratitude and thanks all the doctors, nurses and staff at MD Anderson Cancer Center who treated and aided Eric.
