Russell Stewart Jackson "Rusty"

RUSSELL STEWART "RUSTY" JACKSON Feb. 4th, 1957 -- Jul. 19th, 2007 Only son of John David Jackson and the late Sally Ann Tatum Jackson, Rusty was born at Methodist Hospital in the Houston Medical Center. He died in the Vitas Hospice Unit of the Memorial Hermann Memorial City Hospital after a ten month battle with lung cancer. Rusty lived his entire life in Houston, first with his nuclear family, then independently for a while, and, finally, with his mother for the last twenty-five years. As a child and young man, he attended St. Martin's Episcopal Church, where his mother taught Sunday School. Rusty attended Sunday School, then sang in the adult choir for several years. Rusty was a gentle, multi-talented man who made friends easily. He was a voracious wide-ranging reader and a talented Scrabble and chess player. He loved to shoot pool. While he attended the High Scool for the Performing and Visual Arts, graduating from the vocal music curriculum, his real vocation was painting and graphic arts. His life and career centered around providing circumstances in which he could continue to paint, sculpt, model or print without serious competition from making a living. He became a registered Massage Therapist, seen as a possible alternate career or sideline, but nothing replaced his job as a man of all work with the Amherst Apartments where he and his mother lived. He continued to paint all his life, developing a unique style best described as Pointilist Surrealism. He exhibited at small galleries and at the St. Francis' Episcopal Church annual Art Show. Rusty's mother pre-deceased him by a year and a half. He never married . He is survived by his father and step-mother, David and Joyce Jackson, his step-sister Debbie Day, his aunt Frances Elliot Jackson, and uncle John Edward Norris, M.D., and cousins Dava Jackson McWhorter and her husband Archer McWhorter III, all of Houston, and John and Bruce Norris, of New York, Jana Norris Cole of Mt. Rusty will be interred next to his mother in The Garden of the Holy Cross at St. Martin's. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Save The Children, a cause Rusty supported all his life, or to The Community of Hope at St. Martin's Episcopal Church.

Etta Frances Roman

ETTA FRANCES HANEY ROMAN, born September 5, 1932 in Pampa, Texas awoke in the arms of Jesus on Tuesday morning, July 17, 2007. Though her loss will be deeply felt by her 3 children: John Roman and wife Sue, Catherine Epps and husband Darrell, and Carolyn Leach and husband Steve, we rejoice that she is now in the presence of her dear husband of almost 49 years, Richard W. Roman, her mother, grandmother and first grandchild. We're sure now that she is free of her breathing difficulties, she is revamping all of Heaven's vegetable gardens, while Lady Bird Johnson works on the flowers. What a pair! In the past few days, many friends have described Etta as a "force of nature" and a true Texas lady. We couldn't agree more. She was extremely petite but in physical size only; her love could absolutely fill the room. After suffering through some extreme health issues she was back...full of life and joy-her passions being her God, her family, giving hugs and her garden. It was her garden that brought her back to life and she most felt her Lord's presence amid her plants. There will be a memorial service celebrating her life at Southwest Presbyterian Church, 6033 S. Rice in Bellaire (713-432-0400) Saturday at 11 am with a reception immediately following. The family wishes to honor her desire of "flowers for the living rather than the dead" therefore donations can be made for the medical care of her precious grandson, Iain Epps, who suffered a severe brain injury. Checks should be made out to Etta Roman, with Iain Epps name in the memo line and sent to Guaranty Bank, Attn: Carlos Escamilla, 14703 Eagle Vista Dr., Houston, TX 77077. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Eagle's Trace who treated her like a queen!

Alan Craig Landry

ALAN CRAIG LANDRY, 55, died of multiple complications on Tuesday, July 17, 2007. Born April 6, 1952, in Little Rock, Arkansas, he was the son of bandleader Sonny Land (Claude P. Landry--deceased) and Rosamond Landry (Shelley) of Houston, Texas. Surviving Craig is Sue Riley, his faithful and loving wife of 10 years; mother Rosamond Landry and step-father Clyde Shelley; sister Kathleen Raitt of New York City; stepchildren Patrick and Danielle Riley and Tosha Riley of Mechanicville, NY. A graduate of Westbury High School and the General Motors Training School, Craig's technical and mechanical skills were honed from childhood. As a young boy, he developed an interest in racing slotcars--by age 13 he was beating out adult competitors for regional trophies. While he owned Broadway Hobbies in Pasadena, TX, he wrote a Raceršs Handbook and newsletters to stimulate and educate aspiring racers. Craig then established ZAP RACING PRODUCTS where he produced handbuilt chassis and related products. He established a reputation for quality that was sought world-wide. Craig also became adept in racing his own hand built slotcars. His pro efforts brought him many awards in National meets, write-ups in national Scale Auto Racing magazines, front page pictures, and requests for advice on understanding the physics of slotcars as a factor toward winning were sought. He worked tirelessly to introduce new ideas and products to the Slotcar Hobby Industry. Craig's life-long love of music manifested itself in his playing the bass drum in the Westbury High School marching band, and later, in the company of professional musicians, playing drums in a rock band at gigs at many clubs in and around Houston. His love of music, cars, computers, television, electronics and other avenues of exploration never stopped. His mind was a "steel trap" of information. The family has chosen cremation. A memorial service to honor Craig's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 21, 2007 at the Miller Funeral Home, 7723 Beechnut, Houston. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Cancer Society.
