DR. Gilbert Riley Whitaker, Jr.

DR. GILBERT RILEY WHITAKER, JR. passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 21, 2007, after a long illness. Gil was born on October 8, 1931, in Oklahoma City, OK, the son of Gilbert Riley Whitaker and Melodese Kilpatrick Whitaker, who preceded him in death. He graduated from Oklahoma City Classen High School in 1949 and enrolled in Rice Institute in Houston, TX, where he received a BA in Economics in 1953. He was a member of the Navy ROTC and upon graduation from Rice was commissioned an Ensign and assigned to the U.S.S. Isherwood destroyer, serving in both the Mediterranean and Pacific. In December 1953, while on leave from the Navy, Gil married Ruth Pauline Tonn, at the First Presbyterian Church in Houston, TX. The two first met at the church while attending Rice as undergraduates. After completing his Navy service, Gil attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX, for one year, and then transferred to the University of Wisconsin in Madison, where he received his Master's Degree and a PhD in Economics. In 1960, he was appointed to the faculty of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. In 1966, he joined the faculty of the Washington University in St. Louis School of Business and served as Associate Dean until 1976. From 1976 to 1978, Gil served as Dean of the MJ Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. In January 1979, Gil was appointed Dean of the University of Michigan Business School. During his tenure as Dean, he doubled the faculty, upgraded the curriculum and improved the recruitment of minority students. Under his leadership, the school reached out to the business community and greatly expanded the physical facilities with the addition of the Kresge Library and the Executive Residence. In 1990, he was appointed Provost of the University and during his 5 year term, he emphasized strengthening academic programs and implanted a more demanding and thorough budget process. Throughout his career, Gil had a fond place in his heart for his undergraduate alma mater, Rice University, and in 1997, returned to lead the Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management as Dean. Gil once again took a struggling program and brought it into national prominence. He led the school to full accreditation by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) within his first year, recruited top-flight faculty, instituted an Executive MBA program and was recognized by Time magazine for his achievements in minority student recruitment. Once again, Gil reached out to the local business community to help strengthen the school both academically and financially. His efforts led to the funding and construction of Janice and Robert McNair Hall, a new 167, 000 square foot home for the Jones School. Gil and Ruth led the way, as they had many times before, by personally pledging $100, 000 to the project. In addition to his academic career, Gil also served on many corporate boards including Johnson Controls, Comerica Bank, Lincoln National Corporation, Westlake Chemical Corp. and several others. He was a senior advisor to the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and also served as chairman of the Graduate Management Admissions Council, president of the AACSB, and as a board member of the Consortium of Graduate Study in Management and the Forum for the Future of Higher Education. He was a strong supporter of the arts. Gil's leadership philosophy could be summed up in his favorite quote: "But of a good leader, who talks little, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say, `We did this ourselves."' (Chinese philosopher, Lao-tzu) Gil is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth, and their three children: Kate Whitaker of Ann Arbor; David Edward Whitaker of Oviedo, Florida; and Thomas Gilbert Whitaker (Susan) of Ann Arbor, and also by his sister, Michael Whitaker Arike of Mamaroneck, NY. He also leaves five grandchildren: Rachelle, Meaghan, Emma, Gus and Andrew. A reception for friends, family and colleagues will be held Sunday, June 24, at 2:00PM in the McNair Building, Jesse H. Jones Graduate School of Management, Rice University. A memorial celebration is being planned for the Fall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that friends and well-wishers make a donation in Gil's honor to the charity of their choice, or to the Ruth and Gilbert Whitaker Endowed Scholarship Fund at the Jones School - - MS 531, Rice University.

Kris Rusty Bouldin

Kris "Rusty" Bouldin, 34, a native of Houma and resident of Houston, died Father’s Day, Sunday, June 17, 2007.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Samart Funeral Home of Houma. Memorial service will be at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
He is survived by his parents, Sheila Bergeron Allredge and Glen Allredge; his fiancée, Christina Meiburger; his grandparents, John and Lillian Bergeron; two uncles, Michael and Kenneth Bergeron; three aunts, Cindy Bergeron, Myra Gautreaux and Karen Montgomery; and numerous cousins.
He followed his mom from Louisiana to Colorado and back again and again, thus developing a traveler’s outlook. After obtaining his GED in Houston, he traveled across the southeast from Georgia to Florida obtaining a trade in ceiling-tile installation. He said that while walking on the 8-foot stilts listening to his music he felt like he was walking on top of the world. He loved to travel, explore, fish, ride his motorcycle, play with his cats and his fiancée, Christina.
On Mother’s Day, May 13th, Rusty and Christina rejoined his parents in Houston to begin a business of his own in his trade. Rusty and Christina seemed like reflections of his parents, Rusty was the mirror of his mom while Christina reflected Rusty’s dad’s stability. Rusty and his mom loved (and dared) to dream, or "enjoyed just thinking" is how the two of them explained.
Rusty loved fishing with his grandpa and his dad. He loved everything about the bayous; the smell, the color of the brackish water and the feel of the fish grabbing his hook. And, if he brought the biggest fish home, well, that made his day.
Rusty loved the moon, the feel of the sun on his face, and Christina next to him. He was looking forward to following in his father’s footsteps by running a successful business, being married to the woman he loved most in his life and having children.
Samart Funeral Home of Houma is in charge of arrangements.
