Edwards

Jonathan Robert Edwards, 61, of Spring, Texas, died Sunday, January 15, 2017 in Conroe, Texas.

He was born on September 15, 1955 in Fort Worth, Texas to Robert E. and Violet V. Harris Edwards. He graduated from Del Valle High School in Del Valle, Texas, class of 1974. Jonathan worked as a draftsman for Sterling Steel in the Houston area for several years.

Jonathan had several hobbies, some of which included reading and his interest in Sci-Fi and horror movies. He was also interested in the paranormal from ghosts to extraterrestrials. Jonathan was a member of the NRA.

Jonathan was preceded in death by his father; and his sister Sharon Robbins. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his mother Violet Edwards of Spring, Texas; his siblings Stephen Edwards and wife Bridget of Spring, Texas, Pennie Kennerly and husband Sandy of Brownsville, Oregon and Sandi Edwards-Gard of Portland, Oregon; his nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Jonathan will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A graveside service and committal will be held at 2pm on Friday, January 20, 2017 in Huffman cemetery on FM 2100 in Huffman, Texas.

Garza

Juan “Johnny” Aureliano Garza, 53, of Anahuac, Texas, died unexpectedly on Sunday, January 15, 2017.

He was born on February 3, 1963 in Reynosa, Mexico, the son of Guadalupe and Maria Perales Garza. Johnny graduated from Waltrip High School class of 1982 in Houston, Texas and attended Spartan College Aeronautics and Technology. On August 26, 1989 Johnny and Theressa married in Tulsa, Oklahoma and had their only child in February 6, 1992. In 2008, Johnny, his wife Theressa and son Johnathan relocated to Anahuac from the Pearland area. He worked as a machinist for Schaffer Precision Machining in Houston until 2015.

Johnny was an amazing and talented artist. He enjoyed drawing, painting and building model airplanes. He was an airplane enthusiast who would spend countless hours of his childhood years at air bases and air shows to obtain as much information as he could on all types of aircraft. Johnny loved his television and was a Sci-Fi movie buff. He was a kid at heart with a passion and love for Walt Disney World. When his son Johnathan was younger, they made it a point to travel there every other year.

Johnny was preceded in death by his father; his brothers Julio, Eddiberto and Crisoforo Garza; his sister Doraelia Garza; and his father-in-law Don Watson. He leaves behind to cherish his memory loving wife of 27 years Theressa Simone Watson Garza; one son Airman Johnathan Mitchell Garza (24), Beale AFB; his mother Maria Perales Garza; his brothers Jose Enrique Garza and Aldo Garza, both of Houston, Texas; his sisters Diane Garza Hernandez and husband Johnny and Vanessa Garza Hernandez and husband Antonio, all of Houston, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Johnny will be missed by all who knew him.

Honoring the family by serving as pallbearers will be Johnathan Garza, Oswaldo Jimenez, Albert Crews, Cody Crews, Cole Crews, Brad Watson and Demarcus White. Honorary pallbearers are Danny Alms and Dr. Ben Beauoi.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5pm until 8pm on Thursday, January 19, 2017 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main Street, Anahuac, Texas. Funeral services will be held at 10am on Friday, January 20, 2017 at First United Methodist Church, 204 Trinity Street, Anahuac, Texas. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in Anahuac cemetery.

Barnhardt

Velna Mae Derry Barnhardt was the sixth child (a twin) born to the late Volna and Lelia Evans Derry on April 15, 1931 in Fayette County TX. She went home to be with the Lord on January 12, 2017 at Memorial Hermann TX Medical Ctr in Houston. At an early age she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and became a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church.

Velna attended Albrecht School in Armstrong Colony where she completed the tenth grade. She then entered Phyllis Wheatley High School in San Antonio, TX as a junior and graduated there. Her desire to become a teacher inspired her to enroll at Prairie View A & M University (then Prairie View A & M College) where she earned her bachelor and masters degrees in elementary education. During her college years she helped to pay her college expenses by working at River Bend Lodge in Hunt, TX (near Kerrville) during the summer months. She taught school for 35 years beginning in Ballinger, TX and ending in Laporte, TX., where she taught third grade, which she was an active member in the Retired Teachers Association. She received several honorariums for her service as a third grade teacher in the Laporte ISD. Upon retirement in 1991 her career ended sooner than planned in order to help care for her mother.

Velna was the family story teller. She kept her siblings entertained at family gatherings reminiscing about funny childhood memories. She was always wearing a warm smile, and was an excellent cook.

Velna was a dedicated servant of God in her churches where she held membership and attended regularly until her health failed. While working in the community for her church in Laporte, she met and later married Thomas Barnhardt on August 6, 1968. She was blessed with three daughters immediately upon saying “I do and I will.” They were Kym, Karyn, & Kyla. Later they were blessed with the birth of another daughter, Kelna. She was a caring & loving mother to her children, always encouraging them and supporting them, because she wanted the best for them.

Velna was preceded in death by her parents: Lelia & Volna Derry; brothers: David L. Derry, Dolphus J. Derry, Sr., & Cornell W. Derry; sisters: Rosecy R. Wilkinson & Norma J. Derry.

Memories of Velna will be cherished by her survivors: husband of 48 years, Thomas “Barney” Barnhardt, stepdaughters: Kym Armstrong, Karyn Barnhardt, Kyla Barnhardt, and daughter: Kelna Barnhardt, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; twin brother: Volna Derry (Juanita) of Sealy, TX; one sister: Eva Richards (Bryant) of Greenville, TX; a dear friend Ligaya Breaux and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Pitts

Gary Wayne Pitts 69 of Hardin, died Saturday January 14, 2017 at Houston Hospice.

A native of Texas City, he had lived in Hardin since 2004 and was retired as a pipefitter and was also a U.S. Army veteran. He was preceded in death by his father, Virgil Clarence Pitts and stepfather, Dave Laird. Survivors are his wife, Kathy Pitts of Hardin; mother Clara Pitts of Llano. Sons, Gary Morris and wife Karen of Denton, Roy Pitts of Hardin, and Dale Pitts and wife Hillary of Hardin. Brother, John Owen Pitts of League City, and sisters, Abbie Kaper of Llano, and Connie Center of Sunrise Beach, TX, Grandchildren are Cameron Morris, Gary Morris, Jackson Morris, Jameson Morris, Brennyn Pitts and Jaxsyn Pitts. Cremation under the care of Faith & Family Funeral Services.

Shirley

James Oliver Shirley of Liberty, died Saturday January 14, 2017 at his residence surrounded by his family and friends. He was 81.

James was born June 8, 1935 in Daisetta, to Bernard Lyle Shirley and Loucile Drake. He had lived in Liberty, most of his life and was a self employed Independent Oilfield Consultant, and a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife LaDell Shirley of Liberty; son, Kenneth Shirley of Denham Springs, LA; and daughter, Karmon Shirley DuBose and husband Jim of Beaumont. Life long friend, Roy Baucum of Liberty, and grandchildren, Madison Zickefoose and Sloane Zickefoose.

Russell

Marian Lee Russell, 73, of Dayton, Texas, died Thursday, January 5, 2017.

She was born on August 9, 1943 in Channelview, Texas to Lester and Jimmaie Glover Hyde. Marian was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many.

Marian was an LVN who worked as an IV specialist for a private nursing company. She was a member of Praise Tabernacle Church in Dayton, where she played an instrumental part in building the church. Marian was very devoted to both her faith and the church. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Marian was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Cecil Randolph; her daughter Deborah Herndon-Pierdon; her son Lucas Herndon; her sister Patricia Allen; and brothers Jerry and George Hyde. She leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband of 26 years Edward Russell; her sons Jerry Randolph and wife Mary of Kenefick, Texas and Robert Randolph and wife Christy of Dayton, Texas; her 9 grandchildren and multiple great-grandchildren; her sisters Sue Stedman of Liberty, Texas and Reba Dorsett and husband Mike of Liberty, Texas; and a host of other loving relatives and friends.

A celebration of Marian’s life will be held at 1pm on Friday, January 21, 2017 at Praise Tabernacle Church, 4611 FM 1960, Dayton, Texas. .

Singletary

Audrey J. Singletary, age 65, of Dayton, Texas died peacefully on January 12, 2017 from a long battle with heart disease.

Audrey was born on September 16, 1951 in Anamosa, IA. She was a 1969 graduate of Channelview High School, and lived her adult life in Dayton, Texas. She enjoyed the arts of stained glass, making jewelry, crocheting and was an avid reader. She also loved taking long, family road trips with her siblings. Audrey was a loving grandmother and loved spoiling her grandchildren and her sidekick, Tilly.

Audrey was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Annette Willis and her husband of 23 years, Michael Singletary.

She is survived by her three daughters and their families: Heather and Scott Jentho and their children Kyra, Tyler, Scott Jr., and Kory, Darbye Davenport and her children Rilea and Jesse, and Dena Parker and her son Aiden. Her siblings, Susan and Jorge Gonzalez, Barbara and Mike Mueller, Howard and Lisa Willis and Claudia Willis. And numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to be made to the American Heart Association.

A memorial service will be held Sunday, January 15th from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Crespo and Jirrels located at 6123 Garth Rd in Baytown, Texas. All family and friends are welcome to join. A celebration of her life will begin at 2 p.m.

Services are under the direction of Crespo & Jirrels Funeral Home, 6123 Garth Rd., Baytown, TX 77521.

McCants

Dorothy Mae Sims McCants of La Porte, TX formally of Conroe, TX died January 11, 2017 after a long battle with cancer.

She was born in Latexo, TX, April 26, 1933 to Robert Jackson Sims and Irene Black Sims. She lived in the Cleveland/ Conroe area most of her life. She loved the country life, her favorite job was at the Boot Barn in Cleveland. She loved horses and trail rides, especially the Spanish Trail Ride, bingo with her family and friends, singing to her gospel cd's, and going to church with her friends at West Conroe Baptist Church.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, husband Sam McCants, her daughter Cynthia Ann Yocum Red, her brother Billy Jack Sims, and half brothers and sisters; Garland, Emma Irene, Ollie Lorene, Buster, Clifford, Jewel, Louise, Merkie, JC, Lovie, Robert and baby twin boys.

She leaves to cherish her memory her twin sister Rex Faye Bell, her granddaughters Cristyan Bowen, Kelly and Kyle Berry, her great grandchildren Dusty Berry and Cierra Berry, her great great granddaughter Kennedy Grace Mainer, and half sisters Gladys and Bobbie, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

Dorothy will be buried at Latexo Cemetary with graveside services.

Mettlen

Sherry Lynn Mettlen, of Moss Hill, died Tuesday January 10, 2017 at her residence with her loving family by her side.

She was 51. Sherry was born on July 27, 1965 in Corry, Pennsylvania, to Glenna Scadden and Bruce Stebbins. Sherry graduated from Hull-Daisetta High School in 1984 and attended North Harris Community College. She then married her high school sweetheart, Daron Mettlen in 1985.

She began working at Carol Bond Health Foods in Liberty in 1988 as a cleaning lady making $4 an hour. By 2013, she was the proud owner of the business in which she had worked for 25 years. She worked tirelessly serving her customers and often working seven days a week. She was a passionate community leader and believed in giving back to her community. Sherry was a member of the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce, a member and past president of Hardin Lions Club, a member of the Trinity River Wildlife Refuge, a driving force for the Moss Hill cemetery fund raisers, a recipient of the Masonic community builder award, a member of the Liberty Rotary Club and Bridgehaven Children's Advocacy of Liberty.

Sherry had a huge heart when it came to her family which she lovingly gave of herself to all her family. Her special talent was her love for her nieces and nephews. There was no problem or challenge that was ever too big or too small for her to tackle. Sherry was always willing to help any family in the community who was in need. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

A service of remembrance will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at 11:00 A.M. at Mount Calvary Baptist Church - Marysee of Moss Hill, with Pastor Carlton Bailey and Reverend John French officiating. The family will be receiving friends also on Friday, January 13, 2017 from 10:00 A.M. until time of service at the church.

Honorary pallbearers are the Mount Calvary Baptist Church-Marysee Youth Department who she loved and cherished very much.

Sherry was preceded in death by her father Bruce Stebbins, grandparents, Guy and Helen Stebbins, and Carmen and Gloria Scadden. Foster son, Harvey Douglas, whom Sherry met on Dec. 13, 2013 when he came into her shop with his grandfather, whom she got to know and came to love him very much. Little did she know that he would become her and Daron's foster son by Sept. 2015, nephews Jared Wheeler and Codie Mettlen, and her father-in-law John Mettlen.

Sherry is survived by her husband Daron Mettlen of Moss Hill; mother Glenna Scadden of Moss Hill; sisters, Rhonda Johnson and husband Ricky of Hull, Julie Dutton and husband Glenn of Old River; and brother Roger Johnson and wife Tammy of San Antonio. Mother-in-law, Linda Mettlen of Moss Hill; special aunt Joanna Dahlbeck of Lakeview, NY. Nieces, Katrina Powell and husband Tommy of Dayton, Erika Whitworth and husband Daniel of Moss Hill, Brandi Gilfillan and husband Henke of Raywood, and Erynne Johnson of Daisetta. Nephews, Brandin Johnson of Daisetta, Tyler Johnson of Hardin, Kurtis Johnson of Floresville, TX, Caleb Mettlen of Seabrook, and Cory Mettlen of Jasper. Great-nieces and nephews Sadie Gilfillan and Dana Whitworth, Zackery Powell, Jared Wheeler Whitworth, James and Marcus Whitworth and her extended family Brent Wolfe and Beaux Langston.

Bennett

Patricia Ann Bennett, of Wallisville died Saturday, January 7, 2017 in Baytown, Texas.

She was born on May 12, 1933 in Silsbee, Texas to Buck and Aby Burks Spiller. Patricia was a resident of the Anahuac area for approximately forty-five years. She retired after 27 years from Walmart in Liberty, Texas where she worked as a sales associate. Patricia loved working at Walmart and after retirement would spend countless hours talking with her former coworkers on her trips back to the store.

Patricia enjoyed gardening and could grow just anything. In her younger years, she would always cook for the neighborhood kids. Patricia was also an avid reader, always with a book in her hands. She was an animal lover who had all types of animals throughout her life and loved to care for them.

Patricia is preceded in death by her parents; her first husband Murphy Pinder; her late husband of 45 years, Steve Jefferson Bennett; her son Allen “Dale” Pinder; and her sisters Lily “Sis” Tullos and Dolly Perry. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her brother John J. Spiller of Port Neches, Texas; her daughters, Theresa Broussard and husband Raymond of Woodville, Texas and Roxanne Shumate & husband Shawn of Wallisville; her son Gregory Bennett & wife Shannon; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and friends.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6pm until 8pm on Thursday, January 12, 2017 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, located at 1201 South Main Street in Anahuac. Funeral service will be held at 2pm in the Sterling Funeral Home Chapel. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in Anahuac cemetery.
