Roy

Our sweet mama, Margaret Emily Roy, 79, affectionately known as "Baby" died August 8, 2016. She was born on September 24, 1936.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Marguerite and Scotty Ulch; her brother Scotty Ulch; husband Francis Roy; and daughter Cindy Strode. She leaves behind four children who will miss her like crazy...

She is survived by her children, Leslie Willey Jr., of Port Aransas, Texas, Scotty Willey, John Willey and wife Yolanda and Stacey Medders and husband Stacey all of Anahuac Texas; her sister, Betty Messina of Austin; her brother, Bill Ulch of Aransas Pass; fifteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

We will have fond memories of our mother sitting at the kitchen counter laughing at the jokes being told, making her fantastic coconut pies and sitting at her sewing machine.

She will definitely be missed.

A graveside service and committal will be held at 10am on Friday, August 12, 2016 in Anahuac cemetery.

Higginbotham

Presten Cash Higginbotham, infant son of Robert M. “Bobby” Higginbotham and Mazie M. Pafford, passed away Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at the Kingwood Regional Hospital in Kingwood.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, August 15, 2016, at the Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Presten is survived by his parents: Robert M. “Bobby” Higginbotham and Mazie M. Pafford of Dayton, brother: Westen Higginbotham of Dayton, grandparents: Michael and Renee’ Pafford of Dayton, Alicia and Albert Valerio of Dayton, and Anita and Wesley Norsworthy of Dayton, great-grandparents: Charles Ray and Rita Pafford of Dayton, Debra and Andrew Strang of Daisetta, Linda Andress of Waco, and Kurt and Patty Gassett of Dayton, numerous aunts, uncles, other relatives, and friends.

Nunes

Rodney George Nunes, 50, of Huffman, Texas, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 at his home in Huffman.

He was born on May 26, 1966 in San Jose, California to Rachaele Carrillo. Rodney’s family relocated to Texas and he graduated from Anahuac High School in 1985. In February 1986, Rodney joined the United States Army proudly serving his country as an Army medic. Following active duty, he entered the National Reserve Guard from 1989 to 1993. He attended Lee College and Lone Star College, where he received his degree in Nursing. Rodney was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society, the oldest honor society for liberal arts and sciences in college for his high academic honors. He was also a captain for the Anahuac Volunteer Fire Department.

Rodney worked in the environmental fields for approximately twenty years doing water well testing for gas products as well as mold, asbestos and lead paint abatement. After suffering a major back injury, he decided to return to school for his nursing degree. Rodney has worked as a nurse for the past five years on the Med Surg floor with Memorial Hermann Northeast Hospital. He loved helping others and would often volunteer to work for other nurses with children during the holidays so they could be with their families. He was considered by most as a “work horse”. Rodney was a caring giver and doer with a gentle soul and a devoted uncle to his three young nephews.

When Rodney was four years old, his family lived near a golf course. He would often wake up early on the weekends to collect balls from the course and sell the balls he collected. He also cared for and shared a passion of animals, always rescuing little kittens. Rodney was a perfectionist, clean freak, germaphobe and a MOMMA’S boy. Some of his hobbies included hiking, rock climbing, anything outdoors, carpentry and electrical work. As a young boy, Rodney was an avid reader who later in life loved scientific readings. Rodney also liked to go fishing, cook barbeque and collect rocks (geology).

Rodney was preceded in death by his uncles Leonard Lawrence Carrillo, James “Jimmy” Richard Carrillo and Joseph John “Johnny” Carrillo. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his fiancé Lanette Doyen of Huffman; his parents Rachaele “Rae” and Herman Dunn of Huffman; his sisters Sonya and husband Glenn Camp of Marble Hill, Georgia and Leilani and husband James Wilson of Austin; his nephews Kai, Jake and Kian Wilson, Bryan and Chip Camp; his step-children Larry Desormeaux and Stephen Desormeaux and wife Stephanie; his step-grandchildren Sara and Stephen, Jr.; and numerous other loving relatives and friends. Rodney will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 4pm until 6pm on Saturday, August 13, 2016 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home located at 602 North Main Street in Dayton. A celebration of Rodney’s life will begin immediately following the visitation at 6pm.

Varnon

Coy Glenn Varnon, 57, of Simmons Bottom, died Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at his residence.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, August 12, 2016, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, August 13, 2016, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with services concluding thereafter. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Coy was born November 21, 1958 in Liberty to parents: John Spruce Varnon, Sr. and Anna Marie Varnon, and was a lifelong resident of the Liberty-Dayton area. He was a graduate of the Dayton High School class of 1977, received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Lamar University, and was co-owner of Liberty Furniture for nearly 30 years. He also enjoyed working on the family farm "Dreamwinds," telling stories, reading, and cooking. Coy will be remembered as an accomplished and beloved husband, dad, and business owner.

Coy was preceded in death by his father: John Spruce Varnon, Sr.; and sisters: Fran Krull and Dodie May. He is survived by his wife of 30 years: Tina Hall Varnon of Simmons Bottom; son: Seth Varnon and wife Kimberly of Humble; daughter: Bana Varnon Jobe and husband Cade of Dripping Springs; mother: Anna Marie Varnon of Dayton; brothers: James Varnon and wife Diana of Kingwood, and John Varnon, Jr. and wife Claudette of Bandera; sister: Myrt Krull and husband Bob of Austin; brother-in-law: Bill Krull of Cleveland; Coy and Tina's fur babies: Amos, Miss Priss, Lil AJ, Sox, Shiner, and Pixie Girl; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Willcox

Alice Lee Willcox, 97, of Anahuac died August 8, 2016.

She was born in Beaumont, Texas on February 26, 1919 to George Allen Kight and Effie Mae Kight. Alice spent her childhood in Proctor, Texas before moving back to Beaumont with her parents during her teen years. She graduated from Beaumont High School in 1935.

In high school, Alice met J.C. “Goonie” Willcox of Anahuac and they were married on October 24, 1936. They moved back to Anahuac where she spent the rest of her life. She retired from Anahuac High School where she worked as Secretary to the High School Principal. During her long tenure there, Alice worked for five different Principals, all of which she highly respected.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents; her husband “Goonie”; her sister Yetta; and just recently, her youngest son Ben T. Willcox. She leaves behind her sons, Jesse C. Willcox, III and wife Shirley of Beaumont, George A. “Pudge” Willcox and wife Kay of Anahuac; her daughter-in-law Marsha Willcox of Wallisville; a nephew Earnest Frank of California and a niece Denise White of Orange. Alice has thirteen grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren and three great great-grandchildren.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5pm until 7pm on Wednesday, August 10, 2016 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. A funeral service will be held at 10am on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at the First United Methodist Church in Anahuac. A graveside service and committal will immediately follow in the Anahuac cemetery.

Honoring the family by serving as pallbearers will be Allen Willcox, Collin Willcox, Ben Willcox, Hayden Barbeaud, Kari Totzer and Robert Vaughn.

Gatewood

Mary Eleanor Gatewood, of Liberty, Texas, died Saturday, August 6, 2016 in Beaumont, Texas.

She was born on December 16, 1926 in Summerville, PA to Clarence Markle and Rita Dunham. Mary graduated from Gladewater (TX) High School in 1943. She attended Lamar University, graduating in 1967 with her Bachelor’s degree in Education.

Mary and Herman made their home in Liberty for over 60 years. They raised their children, Gail and Guy, and welcomed many friends and loved ones into their home. Mary was a dedicated teacher for 25 years in the Hardin ISD as a teacher of 4th and 5th grade science and math. She also specialized in special education and art. Mary retired from the school district in 1991. During her time as a teacher, she impacted many students and their families with her dedication.

Mary was an active member of the TSTA, and was an avid reader. Mary was devoted to her children and grandchildren. Her favorite moments were with her grandchildren and great grandchildren, reading their favorite books and playing their favorite games. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband of 62 years, Herman L. Gatewood; her brother Carl Crossland; and daughter-in-law Colleen Gatewood. She is survived by her son Guy Gatewood and wife Gail; her daughter Gail Gatewood Wilson and husband Curtis; her grandchildren Christie Ramirez and husband JR, Lisa Shaw and husband Jason and Michael Benson; her great-grandchildren Brooke Ramirez, Deana Shaw and Elizabeth Shaw; her sisters-in-law Mary Ann Crossland and Wanda Gatewood; and other loving family members and friends.

Serving the family as honorary pallbearers will be Michael Benson, JR Ramirez, Jason Shaw, Glenn Raney, Brent Crossland, Curtis Wilson, John Smithey, Terry Radley, Paul Stewart and Bill Scadden.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5pm until 7pm on Monday, August 8, 2016 at Allison Funeral Service located at 1101 N. Travis Street, Liberty, Texas 77575. A graveside service and committal will be held at 10am on Tuesday, August 9, 2016 in Rosedale cemetery in Sour Lake, TX with Rev. David Cross officiating.

Wilson

Peter Gary Wilson age 70 died Saturday August 6, 2016 in Huntsville, Texas.

Peter was born in Houston, Texas July 1, 1946 the son of the late Arthur and Donna Wilson. Peter worked for the majority of his life as a long shore men and member of the I.L.A. Local #24. Peter enjoyed fishing, golfing in his early years, and singing karaoke. He collected old fishing reels and antique tools. He built cabinets, tables, and remodeled his own home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Chris Wilson and Michael Wilson, as well as a son Peter Ross Wilson.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughter Allison M. Wilson, sisters Cecelia Sauvage and husband Norbert, Sally Amyett and husband Danny, and a brother Robert Wilson, five grandchildren Charlie Wilson, Alex Wilson, Joseph Wilson, Kayla Wilson, and Lacy Foster. In addition he leaves three great-grandchildren and other extended family and friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A funeral Service for Peter will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Internment will be at Liberty Catholic cemetery.

Hughes

J. Barrie Hughes, 89, of Liberty, died Friday, August 5, 2016, at the Kindred Hospital in Baytown.

Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Graveside are 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 12, 2016, at the Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Barrie was born December 15, 1926 in Sand Springs, Oklahoma, to parents William A. and Josephine Thompson Hughes. He was a former resident of Crosby, Texas, and has resided in Liberty since 1970.

He was a graduate of Sand Springs High School, received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tulsa, was a veteran of the US Navy during WWII, a retired accountant for Exxon, and attended First Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years: Naomi R. Kinard Hughes, and his parents. He is survived by his son: Paul Hughes of Liberty, daughter: Theresa Hughes Williamson of Cleburne, grandchildren: Rachael, Benjamin, and Lydia Williamson, and numerous other relatives, and friends.

Davis

James Leslie Davis 88, of Hardin, TX passed Aug. 06, 2016.

Services will be Saturday, Aug. 13, 2016 at Olive Bethel Missionary Baptist Church 5830 FM 1011 (Hardin, TX.) Liberty, TX. Visitation will begin at 9AM until funeral at 11AM. Interment will be Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016 with a 12 Noon Gate Time in Houston National cemetery, Houston, TX.

James was born in Hardin (Lakeland), Liberty County, Texas on January 5, 1928 to Oscar Davis, Sr. and Hannah Freeman Davis. James was united with Christ at an early age at Green Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, Romayor, Texas. He united with Olive Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, Hardin, Texas and was a member until his death. James held many positions at Olive Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, including Deacon, Brotherhood President, Sunday School teacher, Bible Study teacher, and Food Committee chairman.

James was an active participant in the Trinity Valley District Association for many years. He served as the President of the Laymen’s Auxiliary for several decades.

James graduated from Hardin High School. He served in the Anti-Aircraft Division in the U.S. Army during the Korean War attaining the rank of Sergeant. He attended Prairie View A&M University where he studied education and kinesiology. James graduated from the Houston Police Academy, discovering his passion for law enforcement. He retired from the Houston Police Department after thirty-one years of service. James worked for the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department as a patrolman and as a longtime Bailiff in the 75th District Court, retiring in December, 2001. He received his Master Peace Officer Certification in 1998.

James was an active member and past President of the Hardin Lions Club, board member and past President of the Board of Commissioners for the Liberty County Emergency Services District No. 7 for the Hardin/Moss Hill area. Liberty County Judge Jay Knight declared April 26, 2015 as “James Leslie Davis Day” in Liberty County in honor of his work in the church and community.

James was preceded in death by his father and mother; wife, Ruth Louise Davis; sons, Gary Bernard Davis and James Leslie Davis, Jr.; brother, Oscar Davis, Jr.; and sister, Susie Lee Davis Vaughn.

James leaves behind to cherish his memories: daughters, Jacqueline Davis, Venus Booker (Earnest), Donneshea Cook (Earl), Bonita Davis (Richard), and Morika Davis (Mark); brother, Franklin D. Davis; sisters, Addie Mae Irvin, Hazel Poole, Lola Belle Roberts, and Lois Flim (Dennis); grandchildren, Rasheeda Davis, Erica Davis Guerrero (Anthony), Leslie Davis, Fallon Adams (Jeremy), Terence Booker, Patrick Cook, Hunter Davis, Chance Ardoin, Devin Cook, and Savannah Ardoin; great-grandchildren, Anthony Guerrero, Jr., Nicolas Guerrero, Maya Porter, Kayleigh Fregia, Kierra Davis, Tillman Hawkins, Raniyah Hawkins, Tristen Davis, Nasir Kitchen, and Brayden Cook.

Mr. Davis' services have been entrusted to Proctor's Mortuary (Locations in Anahuac, Beaumont, Silsbee and Woodville, TX.) .

Melonson

Lomas J. “L.J.” Melonson died Tuesday August 2, 2016 in Dayton, Texas.

The Sun Rose in New Iberia, Louisiana on August 11, 1920 for Willie Melonson and Rebecca Mallet Melonson. Into this union the child, Lomas J. Melonson was born. He attended Hull-Daisetta ISD. L.J. was founder, owner, and entrepreneur of L.J.’s Garage for forty years. Cars were his life, “if it was broken he could fix it.” Husband, Dad, Grandpa, and friend to family and friends all wanted to be in his presence to hear one of his good old days stories.

L.J. is preceded in death by his parents, wife Gladys Melonson, son Jerry Arline, sister Bertha Melonson Deville, brothers; Lester Melonson, Wilfred Melonson, Lance Melonson, Norris Melonson, Harry Melonson, and Lloyd Melonson.

He leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Constance B. Adams of Dayton, son L.J. Melonson Jr. (Paula) of Atascocita, daughter-in-law Shirley Arline of Riverside, CA. In addition he leaves twenty-nine grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral mass will be celebrated 11AM Wednesday August 10, 2016 at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, 101 Donatto St. Ames, Texas with Rosary service to be held at 10AM.
