Edmonds

Never one to give up easily, Barbara Burford Edmonds (80), a long-time resident of Anahuac, Texas, fought long and hard before ultimately succumbing to cancer and a stroke.

She fell peacefully into the welcoming embrace of her Lord and Savior on January 21, 2016. Barbara was born to Floriene and Dan Burford on July 17, 1935 in Fordyce, Arkansas.

After graduating from high school, she moved to Anahuac, where she met W.M. (Butsy) Edmonds, marrying him the following year.

By the time she turned 24, she was the mother of four children – boy-girl-boy-girl, exactly the order she wanted. Barbara worked for the Anahuac school district at three different times and in three different capacities, but she applied her incredible organizational skills first and foremost to her family.

She tackled the job of a rice farmer’s wife, preparing hearty plate lunches for more than a dozen workers everyday during harvest, and tirelessly supported her children’s many interests and activities. She also found satisfaction working with her ESA service sorority. Barbara’s competitive, fun-loving nature and love of games led her to take up sports actively when she was young; her interest as a spectator lasted a lifetime. Adopting the motto “If you can’t beat the old dogs, join ‘em, ” she and Christine vowed to outwit Ralph and Butsy at dominoes. Card-playing provided her many hours of amusement. She challenged her grandchildren to games of Uno, showing no mercy. She played bridge when she was younger, and in her later years hand-and-foot sessions with Ebbie, Audrey and Marlene (and fresh recruits Rita, Joyce, Tami and Cindy) were the highlight of her week.

But her greatest passion – and skill, she might add – was blackjack. The compulsive, nail-biting worrier transformed into an optimist as soon as she sat down at the blackjack table. Walking (or even being rolled in a wheelchair) into a casino gave her a rush of adrenaline. Trips with friends and family were something she always looked forward to.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents and by Butsy, her husband of 42 years. Family members left to cherish her memory include her four children: Steve Edmonds; Patti McCormick and husband Tom; Bill Edmonds; and Diane Tunze and husband Rex; as well as her five grandchildren, Keely Edmonds, Chase Edmonds, Maggie McCormick, James McCormick and Savannah Hollis. Barbara is also survived by her sister, Danna Boswell and husband Tom, and by her brother, Randy Burford and his partner, Tina Bordelon. She had many beloved nieces and nephews on both the Burford and Edmonds sides of the family, as well as scores of cousins that she enjoyed visiting with at family reunions. Her special loved ones also include her cousin, JoAnn McClung, her former daughter-in-law, Christi Edmonds, and her former sister-in-law, Becky Burford.

Friends are invited to visit with the family beginning at 6:00 P.M., Saturday, January 23, 2016 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, located at 1201 South Main Street in Anahuac. Funeral service will be Sunday, January 24, 2016 at 2:00 P.M. at First United Methodist Church, located at 204 Trinity Street in Anahuac, with interment to follow in Anahuac cemetery. Those wishing to honor Barbara’s life with a memorial donation may to contribute to the First United Methodist Church (PO Box 609, Anahuac, TX 77514), where she found spiritual nourishment and a supportive community for decades, or to Harbor Hospice (2450 N. Major Drive, Beaumont, TX 77713), where she received loving and professional care during her final days.
