Duke

Johnny Don “Papa” Duke, 67, of Splendora, died Saturday, October 24, 2015, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 30, 2015, at the Splendora Countryside UMC, in Splendora with services concluding thereafter. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Johnny was born May 3, 1948 in Cleveland, to parents; John Duke and Mattie Thornton Yarbrough Duke, and has been a lifelong resident of Splendora. He was a graduate of the Splendora High School class of 1966, and received his Bachelors Degree in Industrial Arts from Sam Houston State in 1970. He worked as a program analyst, drove for Freight Services as a Teamster for 25 years, and completed his career as a teacher in Splendora ISD after 12 years of employment. Johnny loved and protected his family unconditionally; he could fix anything he attempted. He also enjoyed farming, fishing, carpentry, and especially his tractor time.

Mr. Duke was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife: Nelda Denton Duke, daughter: Elizabeth “Beth” Duke, brother: Glen Yarbrough, and sister: Ethel Jeffcoat. He is survived by his wife of nine years: Judy L. Campbell Duke of Splendora, son: Daryl J. Duke and wife Kelley of Splendora, stepson: Justin White of Arizona, stepdaughters: Rebecca White Lee and husband Philip of Midland, and Sandra Aborn of Memphis, brother: Earl Yarbrough and wife Zettie of Huffman, sister: Jean Chappell and husband Dick of California, sister-in-law: Barbara Yarbrough of Huffman, mother’s-in-law: Wanda Springer and Dorothy Simmons, grandchildren: John D. Duke, James Duke, Morgan Duke, Clay Aborn, Spencer Aborn, Emmalyn Lee, and Benjamin Lee, special friends: Carl and Lynda Coleman, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Laine

Sharon K. Tillman Laine, 62, died Monday, October 26, 2015, at her home in Houston.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 29, 2015, at the Eastgate Catholic cemetery in the Eastgate community. Father Richard Zawadzki will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., with rosary services at 7 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Sharon was born September 22, 1953, a daughter of the late Robert Lee and Florence Matelski Tillman. She grew up in Eastgate Community. She graduated from Liberty High School class of 1971, in Liberty, Texas. After high school Sharon attended the University of Texas, Austin and received a degree through Southwest Texas University in elementary education. She then began teaching in Galena Park ISD and continued post graduate work at Stephen F. Austin State University, where she received a Master’s degree in mid-management. During Sharon’s 30 year career, she was awarded Teacher of the Year three times and touched many lives and made lifelong friends.

Sharon married John Laine in 1979 in Liberty. They were happily married for 36 years. Sharon had a kind heart, loved animals, and rescued many dogs and cats.

Mrs. Laine was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents. She is survived by her husband of 36 years: John D. Laine of Houston, sister: Laurie Tillman Smesny and husband Frank of Seabrook, and numerous other relatives, and friends.

To those who desire, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society at P.O. Box 22718 Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718, in Sharon’s name.

Sampson

Katherine Chapman Sampson, a thirteen year resident of Dayton, died at home after her battle with cancer on Wednesday, October 21, 2015.

Katherine was born in Warden, Louisiana on November 12, 1935, the daughter of the late Glen Chapman and Mary Jones Chapman. Katherine worked at United Airlines for 25 years, and retired in 2014. She was also known locally as the owner of Country Live Bar. Katherine graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and was a long time resident of Pasadena prior to moving to Dayton. She was a member of a Bridge Club in Humble, enjoyed riding in race cars, dancing the jitterbug, loved to crochet/knit, any sort of puzzle, and loved her travels all over the world. Most of all, she loved her friends and family.

Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jerry Sampson; brothers, John W. Chapman, Charles Chapman, and Joseph Wayne Chapman; and sisters, Jennifer Lee Chapman, and Dorothy Glen Avant.

She is survived by her son, Keith Crawford and wife Laura of Cincinnati; daughters, Kathy Thompson of Dayton, Dee Ann Norman and husband Mark of Palestine, Kay Lambert and husband Mike of Shang Hai; sister, Florence Sue Cameron of Liberty; and granddaughters Kimberly Crawford, and Valerie Crawford. Katherine will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 25, 2015 from 5-8 P.M. at Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main in Dayton, Texas. Funeral services to be held 10AM, Monday, October 26, 2015 at the funeral home with burial to follow in Cedarcrest cemetery in Baytown.

Morgan

Darlene Morgan, 71, of Dayton, died Wednesday, October 21, 2015 in Baytown, Texas surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on February 13, 1944 in Odessa, Texas to parents, William Larry Henson and Velva Marie Mealer Henson.

Darlene is survived by her daughter, Cathy Echols; sisters, Barbara Tyler, Evelyn Lamb and husband Robert, Jaynie Short and Sharon Ballard and husband Chuck; numerous nieces, nephews and other family members and a host of friends. Darlene will also be missed by her church family.

Her family will receive friends on Friday, October 23, 2015 at Grace Community Baptist Church in Dayton from 5 o’clock in the evening until 9 o’clock. Funeral services will be held at 11 o’clock in the morning on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at the church with the Rev. Wayne Hardin officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia cemetery in Dayton. Services are under the direction of Hardin Family Funeral Home in Houston.

Lyons

Charles Beverly Lyons, a thirty-two year resident of Liberty, died at home after his battle with cancer, with his loving family by his side on Sunday, October 18, 2015.

Charles was born in Whiteface, Texas, on August 13, 1940, the son of the late Berry Lyons and Imogene Lyons Thompson. He had the honor of serving his country as a member of the U.S. Army. Charles spent his career as an Operator in the oil & gas industry and retired from Dynegy, approximately fifteen years ago. He was a member of the Lions Club in Whiteface, prior to moving to Liberty. Charles loved to ride motorcycles and was a member of the GWRRA Chapter C, of Baytown. He spent a lot of time working on his home away from home on Lake Murvaul, and was known to be a “Jack of all trades, ” offering a helping hand wherever it was needed.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, and two sisters.

He is survived by his loving wife of thirty-two years, Margie Dodson Lyons; sister, Linda Canon of Sundown; son, Jeff Lyons of Huffman; daughter, Beverly Jernigan of Longview; step-son, Greg Wakefield of Houston; grandchildren Chelse Lyons, Aaron Lyons, K.T. Anderson, Kody Jernigan, Kirby Wakefield; great-grandchild Chase Anderson; numerous extended family and friends. Charles will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in honor of Charles Lyons to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or to the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, October 28, 2015 at 11:00 in the morning at Sterling Funeral Home, 602 North Main; Dayton, Texas; inurnment service to follow in Palms Memorial Park, 2421 Highway 146 South, Dayton, Texas.

Jetton

Hugh Nelson Jetton, 83, of Dayton died Monday, October 5, 2015 at Dayton-Tarkington Care Center.

Mr. Jetton was born September 2, 1932 in Edna, Texas to parents, Lathy Wells Jetton and Evelyn Anna Rodgers Jetton. He was a graduate of Edna High School and attended the University of Texas. He received his degree in mechanical engineering. Hugh served in the United States Air Force. He was a resident of the Dayton area for the past few years and was previously of Houston. Hugh enjoyed fishing, being outdoors and was always working on his own inventions.

A graveside memorial service will be held 1:00 p.m., Sunday, November 1, 2015 at Memory Gardens of Edna. Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Mr. Jetton was preceded in death by his parents; son, Wesley Jetton; daughter, Janis Jetton; and brothers, Lathy W. Jetton, Jr. and Alfred Jetton. He is survived by sister, Betty Canon; grandchildren, Jason Jetton, Hunter Jetton, and Jamie Jetton; great-grandchild, Charlotte Jetton; also numerous other relatives and friends.

Mathews

Sandra Sue Starrett Mathews 64, of Hull, died Friday October 16, 2015 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Sandra was born August 7, 1951 to parents, James Starrett and Bernice (Luman) Starrett in Corpus Christi. She worked as a Rural Mail Carrier for USPS and was a born again Christian where she attended church at the United Methodist Church of Hardin.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 24, 2015 at 11:00 A.M at Mount Calvary Baptist Church - Marysee with Reverend Gideon Watson officiating.

She loved to work in her flower beds, fish, sew and loved her hummingbirds and also enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is preceded in death by her father, James Starrett and a her loving nephew, who is pictured above with her, Michael Evan Charnock born October 11, 1975 and died February 12, 2012.

Sandra is survived by her mother, Bernice Starrett of Pasadena., husband, David Mathews of Hull., son, James Hard of Hardin., daughters, Carol Ann Rives and husband Larry of Moss Hill, Dana Fuller and husband Wade of Mineola and Tynia Colbert of Houston., brother, James Starrett of Shiro., sister, Carol Percer of Deer park., grandchildren, Kaylyne, Hailey, James, Brooklyn, Cordrey, Brian, Josh, Jared, Logan, Annette, Jennifer, Jace, Kourtney, Victoria and 8 great grandchildren.

Finley

Nora Lockhart Finley age 85 of Liberty died October 19, 2015.

Nora was born March 28, 1930 in Beaumont, Texas the daughter of the late Harvey William Lockhart and Nora Opal Whitehead Lockhart. Nora enjoyed her church family, cooking, fishing, and spending time with her family. She worked over the years first as a bookkeeper for Finley Oil, a legal secretary for Josey Oil, and later as a cook in the Cafeteria for Hardin ISD. Nora was the caretaker of the family, caring for numerous relatives throughout the years.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her brother Richard Lockhart and two nieces Kim Lockhart and Susan Thornton.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her children: Sandra Finley of Clear Lake, Harvey Finley and his wife Beverly of Hardin, Marsha Finley DeDear and her husband Vernon of Liberty, and Andra Finley of Austin. Brother: Billie Lockhart of Moss Hill. Grandchildren: Harvey Finley Jr, Christi Bautsch, Michael Pantalion, Chad Finley, and Amy Hunt. In addition she leaves her ten great-grandchildren: Savannah, Alayna; Riley, Mikey, Maecy, Matthew, Zachary, Bradley, Madison, and Austin. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A visitation for Nora will be held Thursday October 22, 2015 from 5-8 P.M. at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas. A funeral service will be held 10am Friday October 23, 2015 at the funeral home with burial to follow in Finley cemetery, Hardin, Texas. Serving as pallbearers will be, Bruce Lockhart, Chad Finley, Michael Pantalion, Steve Bautsch, Riley Bautsch, and Matt Thornton.

Hill

Beverly Jean Bowen Hill, 71, of Cleveland, died Saturday, October 17, 2015, at the Feels Just Like Home care center in Cleveland.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 20, 2015, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints with burial following at Pace Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens in Cleveland. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace- Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Beverly was born January 16, 1944 in Houston, to parents; Albert Gus and Mabel King Bowen, a former resident of Galena Park, and has resided in Cleveland for the past 38 years. She was a veteran of the US Navy, homemaker, and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She also enjoyed painting, ceramics, crocheting, and reading. Beverly was very active in her children’s school years by volunteering as a room mother and president of the band booster club.

Mrs. Hill was preceded in death by her parents and son: Lance Howard Hill. She is survived by her husband of 48 years: Boyce Glenn Hill of Cleveland, daughters: Hayley R. Pequeno and husband Jose of Porter and Margaret A. Wedgeworth and husband Dana of Arlington, sister: Sylvia Ann Price of Brenham, daughter-in-law: Susan Hill of Utah, brother-in-law: Pete Hill of Porter, grandchildren: T. J. Murry, Justin Murry, Gracey Kaylyn Pequeno, Kimberly Hill, and Nathan Hill, great-grandchildren: Tripp Murry, Rhody Murry, and London Marie Hill, extended family members: Barbara Ann Smith, Cindy Easterling, Lisa Pearcy, Charles Parker, numerous other relatives, and friends.

For those who desire, donations may be made to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Missionary Fund at 1100 Southline Street, Cleveland, Texas, 77327-4647, in Beverly’s name.

McClusky

Peggy Ione (Tinsley) McClusky age 69 of Daisetta died Monday, October 19, 2015 at home with family and friends by her side.

Peggy was born November 5, 1945 in Liberty, Texas the daughter of the late Wilbur Tinsley and Vieva Canter Tinsley. Peggy was an active member of Central Baptist Church of Daisetta. Peggy was very creative and enjoyed sewing, crafting, and spending time with her family. As a homemaker, she was willing to contribute her skills and time to any project, whether for her kids’ school programs, her church or her community. Additionally, she was an active member of the Oakdale cemetery Association.

She leaves behind her husband of fifty-one years J. E. McClusky of Devers, son David McClusky and wife Cathy of Hull, daughter Tressa Moore and husband Kirk of Devers, sisters Patricia Gartner of Daisetta and GayeNell Harrison and husband Tommy of Daisetta, as well as four grandsons; Andrew McClusky, Bryce McClusky, Caleb Moore, and Joshua Moore, brothers in law and sisters in law, numerous nieces and nephews, friends, and classmates.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, October 20, 2015 from 5-8 P.M. at Central Baptist Church in Daisetta, Texas. A funeral service will be held 1 P.M. Wednesday October 21, 2015 also at the church with burial to follow in Oakdale cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations can be made in Peggy’s memory to Central Baptist Church of Daisetta, PO BOX 489 Daisetta, Texas 77533 or to the HD Golden Oldies Scholarship Fund c\o Hull-Daisetta High School PO BOX 477 Daisetta, Texas 77533.

Castleberry

Carolyn Jewelanda Miller Castleberry, 52, of Cleveland, died Saturday, October 17, 2015, at the Cornerstone Hospital in Conroe.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, October 22, 2015, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Splendora City cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Carolyn was born September 25, 1963 in Dallas, to parents; Guy Miller and Ruby Lehnis, and has been a lifelong resident of the Cleveland area. She was a homemaker and enjoyed spending time with her family and going to the beach.

Ms. Castleberry was preceded in death by her parents, son: Jeremy Castleberry, and brother: Gary Miller. She is survived by her daughter: Christina Smith and husband Justin of Cleveland, son: Steven Castleberry and wife Samantha of Splendora, brothers: Ronnie Miller of Cleveland and Michael Miller of Grapevine, grandchildren: Isaiah Nisbet, Kaden Castleberry, Christopher Bass, Kyle Buras, and one on the way, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Cotten

Betty Jo Trahan Cotten, 85, died Tuesday October 13, 2015 at her residence in Alvin, Texas.

Betty was born August 4, 1930 in Kountze, Tx. to parents Grady T. Trahan and Mamie Langston Trahan. Betty was preceded in death by husband Brack Cotten, son Richard Cotten and granddaughter Lori Kirk.

Betty is survived by daughters, Sandra Harris of Nederland, Tx, Carla Jannise and husband Joe of Raywood, Tx. and daughter in-law Janice Cotten of Alvin, Tx. Brother, Herbert Trahan and wife June of Sour Lake, Tx. and sister Ella Rollings of Livingston, Tx, 6 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild, along with numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. A special thank you to Harbor Hospice of Friendswood, Tx. and Bright Star Care Givers of Alvin, for their kind and professional service to Betty in her time of need.

Service for Betty Cotten will be Friday, October 16, 2015, visitation from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at Faith and Family Funeral Home, with funeral at 1:00 p.m. Interment will be at Guedry cemetery in Batson.
