Barbara Ann Donatto Wright
December 5, 1936 – June 10, 2015

Barbara Wright wife, mother, sister and friend — passed from this life to join her heavenly Father on June 10, 2015 at the age of 78.

Through her life she accomplished many wonderful things. She valued and loved her family taking great care to build a warm and nurturing home environment. She was an educator and entrepreneur. She loved the Lord and was a faithful member of St. Stephens Episcopal church in Liberty, Texas. Her warmth and creativity will be missed and her legacy will live on through her family and those that she touched: her beloved husband of fifty-five years John O. Wright, two daughters—Jocelyn Wright and Allison Wright, two grandsons—Landon and Logan Darjean, sister Bonnie Gordon, cousins Donna Young and Raymond and Louise Donatto, sisters-in-law Ethel Lucille Wright Daniels and Thelma Wright Barnes, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and the St. Stephen’s Church Family.

Barbara Wright was born in Raywood, Texas on December 5, 1936, the first of two daughters of Benoit (Bennie) Donatto and Camille Briscoe Donatto. The family settled in Ames, Texas where she attended Our Mother of Mercy Catholic School graduating the eighth grade in 1951. She continued high school at Liberty Training School where she was a majorette and member of the band, playing the French horn and trumpet. Barbara graduated from high school in 1955, receiving a scholarship which allowed her to continue her education at Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU). She studied education and library science and in 1957 graduated with a Bachelor of Science, realizing her dream of getting an education and becoming a teacher.

Barbara’s teaching career started in Austin, TX where she taught at one of the state schools. She was a middle and high school history teacher and librarian in Port Arthur public schools, and a middle school teacher in Houston Independent School District and Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in New Orleans. She also taught basic education for young adults with the Clearfield Job Corps in Clearfield, UT. She was a dedicated teacher spending countless hours planning lessons and grading the work of her students. She impacted many lives through her teaching and when her path crossed that of her students she was always excited to see who they had become.

During her time at PVAMU, she met John O. Wright, an upper classman from Liberty. They developed a relationship and eventually married on July 2, 1960.

Their lives took them from Port Arthur to San Antonio to Orange to Salt Lake City, Utah, to Houston, New Orleans, Huntsville and Ames, Texas. Barbara and John have two daughters—Jocelyn Renee’ Wright and Allison Wright and two grandsons, Allison’s sons Landon Kennedy Darjean (9 years old) and Logan Harper Darjean (6 years old).

Barbara had not only a creative, but an entrepreneurial spirit. She founded Barbara’s Formal Fashions & Designs in New Orleans through which she designed and created wedding dresses, prom and evening gowns and debutante gowns for carnival.

Additionally, she and John founded Chateau East Ballroom in 1990, a banquet and events venue in New Orleans. After retiring to Liberty County, they founded and currently own Cedar Grove RV Park and Travel Center in Ames, Texas.

Barbara enjoyed reading biographies, solving crossword puzzles, assembling board puzzles, embroidering, gardening and decorating her home for holidays, especially Christmas. She and John renovated his grandfather’s Victorian-era house, which she loved and was so proud of. She collected dolls, ceramic angels and tea cups. She enjoyed making others feel good sending cards for birthdays and special occasions or just to say that she was thinking about them. She kept the family history collecting and cataloguing photos of people and events.

Barbara loved the Lord and commented that she could not remember a time when she did not know Him. Her parents were Roman Catholic and the family belonged to Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church in Ames. After she and John married , they joined the Episcopal Church attending St. Paul’s Church in Orange. They were faithful members of St. James’ Episcopal Church in Houston and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in New Orleans. She and John have been members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Liberty for almost 20 years where she was active with the Episcopal Women and Friends-in-Deed ministries.

After John and Barbara retired to the Liberty area, Barbara became an active member of the Liberty Training/West Liberty Schools Alumni and Ex-Students Association. She was instrumental in the writing and publication of “From Whence We Came, ” a history of these historically African American Liberty schools, serving as Education Research Analyst and Editor of the book.

Barbara loved her family and was devoted to taking care of her husband of fifty five years, John, raising her two daughters and spoiling her grandsons. She was always involved in Jocelyn and Allison’s activities as they grew up. She was Girl Scout Troup leader and participated in the parent-teacher association. She made sure that they had every opportunity. “She was a great example of how to be the perfect wife and mother” and did so “effortlessly”. She cared for her oldest grandson, Landon during the first years of his life and is known as “Tia” to her great nieces and nephews.

Barbara became critically ill in the spring of 2010, but miraculously survived. Through God’s grace, prayer and her sheer will and determination, she recovered and danced with her husband at their fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration that same July. She did this in spite of the doctors’ prognosis that she would be walker, brace, and wheelchair-bound.

The family was blessed to have Barbara, their little miracle for five additional years. On Wednesday, June 10, 2015, after a valiant and long fight with illness, Barbara passed on to the place that Jesus prepared for her and is now with her heavenly Father. Her warmth and creativity will be missed and her legacy will live on through her family and those that she touched: her husband of fifty-five years John O. Wright, two daughters—Jocelyn Wright and Allison Wright, two grandsons—Landon and Logan Darjean, sister Bonnie Gordon, sister-like cousins Donna Young and Louise Donatto and brother-like cousin Raymond Donatto, sisters-in-law Ethel Lucille Wright Daniels and Thelma Wright Barnes, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and the St. Stephen’s church family.
