Tinnerman

William Newton “Bill” Tinnerman II, 68, of Anahuac, Texas, died Monday, April 27, 2015.

He was born June 10, 1946 in Aransas Pass, Texas, to Helen Isabel Evans and Dr. W. N. Tinnerman, by whom he is preceded in death.

Bill attended Southern Methodist University and graduated with his bachelors and masters degrees in chemistry. While at SMU, he met Linda Fahring, the love of his life, whom he married in Anahuac, Texas on June 13, 1970. He served in the US Army Artillery from 1969 to 1972 at Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma. After finishing his service, he entered the doctorate program at the University of Houston and received his Ph. D in polymer chemistry. He remained at UH for 4 years teaching organic chemistry before going to the University of St. Thomas, where he taught organic chemistry for 36 years. Bill was a generous man and civic service was a big part of his life. He was a devout member of the First United Methodist Church of Anahuac, a member of the Anahuac Lions Club and he served on numerous committees at UST.

His most precious moments were spent grading lab books and exams while driving to Dallas to watch SMU Mustang football (they won a few!) and visit his granddaughter. He hosted an annual picnic for UST faculty and every student who took organic chemistry at UST. The picnic was always held the first weekend in May before the slaughter of final exams. Everyone enjoyed boiled crawfish, BBQ and all the trimmings, Frisbee golf, softball games, flying kites and swimming. He was a “simple organic chemist” who loved his students and his family. (…and pecans, and mowing grass, and old movies…)

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Linda, his daughter and son-in-law, Mary Helen and Andrew Hall, sister, Helen Tinnerman, aunt, Doris Cheshier, granddaughter, Mary Isabel Hall, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends and former students.

Tinnerman II Endowed Scholarship Fund. Your support will benefit future students studying the subject he passionately taught for many years. Please give now to support his legacy fund. Once on the Give Now page (https://tinyurl.com/USTGiveNow), you will have the opportunity to indicate where you would like to direct your gift. Please select “Other, ” add the amount, and type “Tinnerman Scholarship” in the memo box. You may also send a check to the university with Dr. William N. Tinnerman II Endowed Scholarship Fund in the memo line to 3800 Montrose Blvd, Houston, TX 77006-4626.
