Leibham

Eleanor Mary Smesny Leibham, 81, of Crosby, Texas, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, passed away peacefully at home on February 22, 2015.

She was born in Dayton, Texas on February 1, 1934 to Joseph V. Smesny and Mary Rachunek Smesny.

One of seven children, she grew up on a farm in the community of Eastgate in Liberty County.

She graduated from Dayton High School in 1952, and remained close to her classmates her entire life.

For almost 30 years, she worked as a legal secretary for Liberty County Attorney A.J. “Jack” Hartel, who affectionately referred to her as “E.” Eleanor loved her Czech heritage.

She was fluent in the Czech language, and traveled several times to the Czech Republic with her husband Thomas.

She taught herself to play the accordion, and for many years was active in the Czech Heritage Singers.

Eleanor was extremely generous with her time, talents and treasures.

A woman of deep faith, she was a founding member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby, where she was an active member for over 50 years, including many years participating in the choir. She enjoyed cooking and baking, and always took orders for favorite dishes from her children and grandchildren every time they came home to visit. Her coconut rolls were famous in Crosby, where people lined up every year at the annual Czech Festival to purchase one. Eleanor was one of a kind, with a sharp wit and a great sense of humor. After all, funny was in her blood because her maiden name “Smesny” translates to “funny” in English! She had a generous spirit, touching the lives of everyone she met.

Although she didn’t like people making a fuss over her, she went through great lengths to do so for others. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary, even though she had a very large extended family, including many nieces, nephews and Godchildren, and too many friends to count. She always made the holidays a wonderful time for her family, especially her grandchildren, whom she adored. She also had a deep love for animals, which she passed on to all three of her children. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her. The family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Gregory Terry and Dr. Sarma Challa, and their incredible staffs, and the staff at CVS Pharmacy in Crosby, all of whom took excellent care of Eleanor over the years. She loved her doctors, nurses and pharmacy staff like they were family.

Eleanor is survived by her husband of 56 years, Thomas, her daughter Donna, her son Thomas Jr. and his wife Vikki, her daughter Shelly and her husband Mark, her beloved grandchildren Jessica Oldag and Lance Corporal Jared Oldag, U.S.M.C., her brother Emil Smesny and wife Nancy, and her sister and best friend Lillian Kulak and husband Albin.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Joe F. Smesny, Louis Smesny, and Jerry Smesny, and her sister Molly Smesny Hanel.

A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2015 from 5pm to 8pm, with a rosary starting at 7pm, at Sterling White Funeral Home, 11011 Crosby Lynchburg Road, Highlands, Texas 77562. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, February 27, 2015, at 11am at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Crosby, Texas, with a luncheon reception following in the parish hall. Burial will be at St. Anne’s cemetery in Eastgate at 2:30pm.

Given that Eleanor was a generous soul who donated to numerous charities, the family suggests donations to the Sacred Heart St. Vincent de Paul Society or Sacred Heart Catholic School in Crosby. Arrangements entrusted to Sterling-White Funeral Home 11011 Crosby-Lynchburg Rd. Highlands, Texas 77562. To offer condolences to the family, please visit www.sterlingwhite.com.
