Watson

James David Watson, known to friends and family as Jimbo, was born in New Bern, North Carolina on November 20, 1949 to Teresa and James O. Watson.

He was raised in Wilmington, N.C., where he was active in the Methodist Church, Boy Scouts, and the Methodist Youth Fellowship. He grew up playing basketball, fishing and hunting with his dad, digging in the sand of Wrightsville Beach and playing the drums in a band. And he would rather wash the dishes than mow the yard any day of the week.

Jimbo found his way to Anahuac, Texas in 1973 and went to work as a welder. He still loved to fish and he still loved living near the water. He later became the owner and operator of the Channel Marker 17 in Oak Island, Texas. The restaurant is known far and wide for more than just good food. It was his smile and handshake that greeted you, the conversation, the laughter, the jokes, and the friendship he offered so freely that will be most remembered. He loved his family, his customers, his business, sharing a cold one with friends, and fishing off of his dock. He married his wife Ernestine on June 17, 2006, and together they have run a successful business and loved and supported each other through rain and shine and hurricanes and floods.

Jimbo was tough as nails on the outside, but it never took long to learn that a heart the size of Texas lived beneath the surface. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend who supported his community, loved his family with his whole heart, and never met a stranger. He left this world peacefully on December 17th, at the age of 65, and was preceded in death by his father, James Otis Watson. He is survived by his loving wife, Ernestine, sons Chris Watson and wife Cortney and Robert Rogers and wife Shelia, daughters Amber Watson and husband Patrick Gilbert and Jamie Rast and husband Jeremy, grandsons Travis Watson, Shawn Rogers and Junior Grande, granddaughters Baylee and Brooke Watson and Kalee Gilbert mother Teresa Limerick, brother Chuck Watson and wife Missy, sisters Anne Martin and husband David, Barbara Hainley and husband Mark, and a host of nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

Jimbo found joy in the simple things and taught us all to live life, give back, welcome new faces and never forget the old ones. If there is fishing in heaven, you can bet he is on the pier with his dad and smiling down on those of us who shared his wonderful life.
