Beddoe

Melvin Thomas “Tom” Beddoe was born 7/11/1928, in Pharr, Texas. Eighty-six years later, he was peacefully welcomed and escorted into Heaven on 12/12/2014 by His Lord Jesus Christ, along with his parents Jesse and Eva Mottesheard Beddoe, his brother Leonard Beddoe, his sister Naoma Klein, and infant daughter Darlene Beddoe.

Tom waged a valiant war against time and relentless surgeries and illness to remain a while longer on Earth with his beloved family, his church family, his cherished dogs, and his dream home.
Tom’s entire life was lived valiantly. An Army veteran, who served in the military police during 1950-52 in the Marshall Islands – Operation Ivy Atomic Tests, he went on to earn a long desired agriculture degree from Texas A&I. However, after Mother Nature destroyed three consecutive years of crops with freakish weather, Tom listened to God’s directives, returning to college and earning another full degree, this time from the class of 1964, University of Houston’s College of Pharmacy. Within a few short years, he was co-owner, with his friend Joe Stevens, of two popular, full service drug stores near the east side of Houston: Federal Road Pharmacy and Jacinto Pharmacy. While he found success as a pharmacist, he never lost that calling to agriculture.

Tom was a dedicated and devoted father to his three children: Lynne, Karin, and Marc. Tom met Mary Ada, a widow with three children of her own: Lynn, Marsha, and Alan. After a whirlwind courtship, the two love birds married on 3/20/1971 and successfully blended their two families into one large, loving family. Tom and Mary resided in Greens Bayou 20 years, while enjoying the hobbies of woodworking and periodically testing soil samples throughout Texas for their future dream farm. Tom eventually discovered and purchased three acres of perfect soil in Hardin, Texas. The two spent five years planting pecan and fruit orchards, working the soil, and building (mostly with their own hands) a magnificent home designed to accommodate family gatherings that required 32 place settings should all be able to attend. They also included accommodations to care for both of their elderly mothers, Eva and Jessie, for the last two remaining years of their lives. Tom and Mary built their own home and gardens while designing it, unselfishly, for others. They enjoyed their farm for 22 years out of their 43 years of blessed and blissful marriage together. Tom and Mary moved into Brookdale Senior Living Apartments in April, 2014, in Kingwood, Texas, to be closer to family and to be able to receive excellent care.

Tom was an active leader at Clark Memorial United Methodist Church while they lived in Greens Bayou of Houston. Later he became an active leader at Hardin United Methodist Church, serving in the choir, the building committee, as lay leader, and as Chairman of the Board for over 10 years.
“Dad, Grandpa, Greatpa, Tom” lived to welcome 11 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Mary Beddoe, his daughter Lynne Beddoe Bates and husband Neal, his daughter Karin Goodfellow and husband Phillip, his son Marc Beddoe and wife Kristin, his stepdaughter Lynn Lindsey and husband Greg, his stepdaughter Marsha Miller and husband John, and his stepson Alan Stivers and wife Rose.

Melvin Thomas Beddoe was blessed with a wonderful life and he never failed to thank God for it. His family will never forget those wonderful gatherings at the farm. At the close of each, Tom would always walk everyone to their car, loading them down with good wishes and bags of his precious produce to take with them. Then he would stand at the top of the long driveway, waving broadly as the cars filed out to go home. No one was ever able to out-wave Tom.

Services for Melvin Thomas “Tom” Beddoe will be Thursday, December 18, 2014 at 10am at Hardin United Methodist Church in Hardin with burial to follow at Hardin Chapel cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, December 17, 2014 from 5pm to 8pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis, Liberty, TX.
