Sullivan

Modena Ella Kruger Sullivan was born on June 18, 1921 to Fannie Bell Haynes Kruger and John Henry Fredrick Kruger at the LaFour/Rayner House in Pine Island, Texas.

She was a lifelong resident of Chambers County, and Charter Member of: Oak Island Baptist Church (OIBC), The American Legion Auxiliary, and the James Taylor White I Chapter of the Daughters of The Republic of Texas. Mrs. Sullivan taught Sunday School, VBS, and sang in the choir at First Baptist Church (FBC) in Anahuac and later when Oak Island Baptist Church became a mission of FBS, she was a dedicated worker there teaching and leading singing for many years. She was instrumental in assisting in early 4-H and Horse Show and Youth Project work in Chambers County and the building of the American Legion Hall at Ft Anahuac Park. As a Registered nurse she worked for Doctor G.H. Fahring, the Anahuac Clinic, the Chambers County Hospital and occasionally for AISD as a school nurse.

Cedar Grove School on the East Fork of the Double Bayou was the first school Modena attended, later transferring to Anahuac High School where she graduated in 1939. After high school she attended UTMB Medical School graduating as a Registered Nurse. She married William Clyde Sullivan in 1942. Modena was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years and their infant daughter, Clydena.

Her passions and interest were in archaeology, anthropology and religion. She loved reading, sewing, needle work, gardening, cooking, canning and preserving foods. She was an historian and meticulous genealogist and also collected stamps, coins, old bottles and antique treasures. Modena enjoyed her cattle, horses, dogs and her home. Mrs. Sullivan enjoyed birdwatching, planting for butterfly gardens, and sitting on her front porch to watch and hear the actions and sounds of nature. She was very involved as a voting judge and a volunteer for the commodities distribution of Chambers County. Mrs. Sullivan was a horticulturist, conservationist and environmentalist at heart and was ahead of her time in preventative and home remedy medicine.

Memaw or Aunt Dena as she was lovingly known by her closest family members leaves to cherish her memory: one daughter, Andrea and husband Bobby McClelland, of Anahuac, one son Warren Sullivan, and wife Melonie of Lawrence, KS. Her grandchildren: Rob McClelland of Anchorage, AK, Cody McClelland of Williamstown, KY. Lindsey Sullivan Kimball and husband Micah of Denver, CO, Alex Sullivan and wife Jenny of Colorado Springs, CO. and Abby Sullivan of Newport Beach, CA. and two great grandchildren; Kenner McClelland and Benjamin McClelland of Williamstown, KY. She also leaves a host of family and friends who will miss her presence and contributions to our community.

A visitation with the family will be on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main St., in Anahuac, Texas.

Funeral services will be on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at 10:30 AM at the First Baptist Church, Anahuac, with Bobby Scherer officiating.

Interment will follow in Anahuac cemetery.

Murad

Marianne Rapp Murad, 60, of Hull, died on Friday July 25, 2014. at her residence.

A native of Houston, she had lived in Hull, for fifteen years and was an homemaker.

She was preceded in death by her mother Esther Estes Gittins.

Survivors are her father; Bill Willette of LaPorte, son; Corey Rapp of Hull, daughter; Susannah Brown of Dayton, brothers; Michael Ray Willette of Porter, William Roy Willette of Deer Park, and grandchildren; Jason Brill and Nikki Brown. Cremation service under the care of Faith & Family Funeral Services.

Ainsworth

Garry Donald Ainsworth, 68, of Sour Lake, died July 23, 2014.

He joined his parents, Barney Lee Ainsworth and Verda Eldora Collins Ainsworth; sister, Ethel Loretta Westmoreland and brother, Bobby Joe Clark, who preceded him in death.

Those left to treasure his memory include his daughter, Molly Galloway and husband Marc of Spring; brother Barney Lee Ainsworth, Jr. and wife Mary of Sour Lake; sister, Shirley Ann Garrard of CA and many nieces and nephews and cousins along with a host of extended family and friends.

A gathering of family and friends will be on July 31 at Thicket Church of God at 5 pm with a graveside service to follow at 7 pm at Felps cemetery.

Renfro

Almeda Rose “Rosie” Ericson Renfro, 73, of Trinity, Texas and formerly of Dayton died Thursday, July 24, 2014 at her home.

Rosie was born July 17, 1941 in Baytown, Texas. She graduated from High School in May 1959. She was a longtime resident of Dayton, where in the early years she worked as a reporter at the Dayton News while earning a Bachelor’s Degree from Lamar University. Rosie was employed as a teacher for 25 years at Dayton Independent School District. She was a member of the Chapel in the Pines Church, in Trinity, Texas.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents Arthur and Lela Mae Ericson and Brother David Ericson.

Rosie is survived by her loving husband of 28 years Ross Renfro; daughters: Deborah Collins, Paula Campbell, Becky Smith, Shelly Dailey and Tracie Bice; son Eddie Renfro and wife Mandy; 14 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

A visitation with the family will be on Monday, July 28, 2014 from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St.

Funeral services will be on Tuesday, July 29, 2014 at 10:00 AM in the Chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, with Rev. Mike Savage officiating.

Interment will follow in Sterling White cemetery in Highlands.

Funeral services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Meredith

Alice D. Meredith, 85, died, Thursday, July 24, 2014 in Baytown, Texas.

She was born August 21, 1928 in Horatio, Arkansas to Henry and Arvey Dean. She was a member of the Kenefick Southern Baptist.

She is survived by her daughters: Janet Maybin and Terri Carter and her husband Ronald; sons: Gary Meredith and his wife Millie and Randy Meredith; sisters: Neoma Landriault and her husband Jack and Bettye Daigle and her husband Richard; brother: Gerald Dean and his wife Cynthia; nine grandchildren, ninie great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Meredith will be on Sunday, July 27, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Chapel of Sterling Funeral, 602 N. Main St., with Rev. Jeff Day officiating.

Interment will follow in Magnolia cemetery in Dayton, Texas.

Funeral services are under the directions of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Lewis

Elmer Carl Lewis, age 81 of Huffman, died July 23, 2014 in Huffman, TX.

Elmer was born July 18, 1933 in Houston, TX, son of the late Elmer and Florine Ashford Lewis. He graduate from Sam Houston High School and then entered into the U.S. Air Force in April of 1953 and served four years until April of 1957. Elmer was the owner and operator of the Lumberjack Shack. He was a member of the Lions Club and enjoyed fishing and crabbing in his early years. Elmer always had a yearly garden and was proud of his homemade jelly. Elmer and his late wife, Joyce, loved to travel and loved taking cruises. But mostly, Elmer loved his children and family. He will be missed by all.
Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, and wife; Joyce Lewis. He leaves behind to cherish his memory, son; Phillip Lewis and wife Natalie of Crosby, daughters; Carla Wolf and husband Fred of Huffman, Karen Newby and husband Mike of Huffman, brother; Robert Lewis and wife Margaret of Huffman, grandchildren; Lindsey Sanne, Maci Lewis, Nolan Lewis, Kaitlyn Lewis, Famen Wolf, great-grandchildren; Kiley Collier and Kalen Pizzano.

Services for Elmer Carl Lewis will be Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 10am at Sterling Funeral Home, 602 North Main, Dayton, TX with burial to follow at Huffman cemetery in Huffman.

Visitation will be Friday, July 25, 2014 from 5pm to 7pm in the chapel of the funeral home.

Shelton

Mark Allen Shelton, 51, of Highlands, died July 19, 2014, at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, July 28, 2014, at the Praise Tabernacle of Dayton with graveside services following at Evergreen cemetery in Crosby. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Sunday, at the Praise Tabernacle. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Mark was born April 30, 1963 in Baytown, to parents; Billy David Shelton, Sr. and Judith Ann Brown Shelton, and has resided in the Baytown/Highlands area throughout his life. He was a graduate of the Sterling High School class of 1981, attended the Colorado Technical Institute, was a veteran of the US Army, member and sound technician for the Praise Tabernacle of Dayton, and a foreman for B and S Trucking of Crosby. He also enjoyed church activities and motorcycles.

Mr. Shelton was preceded in death by his father: Billy David Shelton, Sr., and grandparents: W.D. and Alma Shelton and Roy and Syble Brown. He is survived by his mother: Judy Shelton of Arkansas, stepfather: Roy Allen of Arkansas, sisters: Cathie Harris of Old River and Lisa Shelton of Highlands, brothers: Billy David Shelton, Jr. and wife Lori of Baytown and Brian Keith Shelton and wife Silvana of Houston, great aunts: Mary Ann Lucas of Arkansas and Margie Lucas of Arkansas, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Merrick

Nelda Marie Campbell Merrick, 71, of Willis, died Friday, July 25, 2014, at the St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in The Woodlands.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 31, 2014, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Evergreen cemetery in Cleveland. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Nelda was born January 3, 1943 in Evergreen, to parents; Charles L. and Ella M. Hoot Campbell, a former resident of Houston, and has resided in Willis for the past five years. She was a graduate of the Cleveland High School class of 1961, attended Sam Houston State University, and was a retired project manager from the Shell and Honeywell Corporations. She also enjoyed playing Yahtzee, dominoes, bingo, and especially spending time with her grandchildren.

Ms. Merrick was preceded in death by her parents and sister: Floda D. Webb. She is survived by her son: Steven Merrick and wife Denise of Willis, brother: William S. “Bill” Campbell and wife Debbie of Humble, sister: Gloria G. Lilley of Cleveland, grandchildren: Kyle Steven Merrick, Caitlyn Elisabeth Merrick, and Jace Byron Howard, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Shelton

Driskell

Roy Evan Driskell, age 84, died peacefully Saturday, July 19, 2014.

Roy was born on January 29, 1930 in Crockett, Texas to Evan and Myrtle Driskill.

He spent many happy years attending school at Campbell High School where he met many friends in whom he continued to keep in touch with and even at the age of 84 attended his school reunion with his classmates.

Roy joined the United States Army and after the Army entered into a career that would continue with him throughout his life.

He loved driving a truck, first with his brother team driving, and then on to many years of air freight deliver, hauling oilfield pipe, and retiring as a truck driver with his last loads being that of lumber around Southeast Texas. Driving was his life and the hardest obstacle to overcome when he could no longer be on the road. He retired for the last time in January 2013 after retiring from full time employment at the age of 83. On March 29, 1958 he married Odell Richards. Roy and Odell lived in Houston and were active in many activities. They were married for 51 years upon Odell’s death in 2009. Roy had only one request when they were married and that was to have a “White Sports Coat and a Pink Carnation” this request was honored by Odell for their wedding. They had two children-Debbie and Sharon, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Roy was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and Legion of Honor for the Arabia Shrine Temple. He also had a strong faith and attended a Church of God which had a small congregation but one in which he enjoyed and made many friends. Roy was a person who met friends for life. He cared about each and everyone he met-many, many of his friends were those that were friendships begun from childhood. He looked forward to the times when he could visit with old friends. In the past year he had become a member of the “What-A-Burger” breakfast club where some his age and retired met every morning for breakfast and conversation-both of which were wonderful for him, giving him something to look forward to everyday.

Roy was preceded in death by his parents-Evan and Myrtle Driskill, Wife-Odell Driskell, Son-In-Law – Robert Dyer, Brother and Sister-in-Law –Lee W. and Edna Driskill, Sister and Brother-in-Law June and Truman Thibodeaux, Sister – Lorraine Driskill.

Survivors include his children Deborah Driskell Dyer and Sharon Driskell Hersley and Tom McDowall. Grandchildren: Jennifer Dyer Godbout and Daniel Godbout, Kimberly Dyer Sparks and Jonathon Sparks, Bubba Dyer and Megan Stanley, Lisa Hersley, Megan Hersley Kinney and Kyle Kinney, and Courtney Hersley. Great-Grandchildren: Daniella Godbout, William Dyer-Sparks, Genesis Hersley, and Jeremiah Hersley. He leaves numerous family members who he visited with every day through phone calls and visits.

The family would also like to thank those special friends who visited with him every day also, as well as those special friends who were there for many, many years and could always “just pick up where they left off” as if there were never any miles between them.

Smart

Erma Jean Smart, age 84, of Liberty died July 22, 2014 in Houston, TX.

Erma Jean was delivered into this world by Dr. H. Caplovitz near Cow Island, south of Raywood, TX on November 29, 1929 at 6 P.M.. She graduated from Liberty High School in May, 1947 and went to Durham’s Business College in Houston from June 1, 1947 to August 25, 1947.

Erma Jean married Elbert Ray Smart on March 19, 1949 and began her distinguished career in Government Services on September 7, 1947 under County Clerk, Mrs. L.V. Hightower, at a beginning salary of $110 per month. She transferred to the Liberty County Tax Collectors Office in 1971 under the guidance of G.B. Jordon and Laverne Zbranek from April 1, 1975 to December 31, 1980 and was hired by Phillip King, Chief Appraiser of the Liberty County Central Appraisal District, in January 1981; and also has worked under Chief Appraiser Bo Robertson, L.E. Robinson and Alan Conner. During her 57 years of service to Liberty County she stabled a standard of excellence in Government service through her friendly nature, integrity, attention to detail and her genuine desire to help people and retired October 31, 2004. She was selected Secretary of the Year in 1990 by the Liberty Dayton Chamber of Commerce. She always said tax payers paid her salary and she owed them everything.

Erma Jean was preceded in death by her parents; Archie and Vera Hicks Davis, husband; Elbert Ray Smart and great-grandson; Calgary Faircloth. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, sons; Nathan Smart of Liberty, Mike Smart and wife Pam of Liberty, daughter; Darlene Smart of Liberty, sister; Joyce Seay of Liberty, grandchildren; David & Buddie Smart, Kevin and Angel Smart, Alan Smart, Stephen and Kelly Smart, Cassondra Smart, Rebecca and Rick Sackett, Rachael and Lee Rives, Frances and Alex Marks, Nathan Smart Jr, Stacie and Ernie Pickett, Mark Blackburn, great-grandchildren; Dylon, Makinnley, Logan, Alexis, Emma, Alicia, Ethan, Madalyn, Caiden, Madison, Mason, Zoe, Victoria, Kassadie, Hallie, step-great-grandchildren; Macey, Nikki, Jaci, Kaya, Connor, Alyssa, step-great-great-grandson; Bryce.

Services for Erma Jean Smart will be Saturday, July 26, 2014 at 10am at the Bethel Assembly of God Church, FM 563 in Liberty with burial to follow at Fairlawn cemetery in Liberty. Visitation will be Friday, July 25, 2014 from 5pm to 8pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 North Travis, Liberty, TX.
