Jennie Lee Clem

Services for Jennie Lee Clem, 84, of Houston, and formerly of Grapeland, will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Oakgrove Baptist Church in Grapeland with the Rev. Richard Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Parker Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mrs. Clem died Saturday at Park Manor Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born Oct. 7, 1917 in Troy to Joe P. Blackburn and Marylou Ozell Thornton Blackburn. She was a homemaker and member of Oakgrove Baptist Church.
Mrs. Clem was preceded in death her husband, Melvin Calvin Clem, in 1987; a sister, Eva Wilcox; brothers, T.H. Blackburn and H.D. Blackburn.
She is survived by sons, Darrell Clem of Grapeland, Larry Clem and Gary Clem, both of Houston; sisters, Mae  Johnson and Sarina Phillips, both of Houston; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Pallbearers will be  Taylor Clem, Justin Clem, Brandon Clem, Darrell Ray Hammon, Chris Morgan and Jim Wiley.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Elizabeth “Bettie” Tippitt Rogers

Services for Elizabeth “Bettie” Tippitt Rogers, of Sherman, and formerly of Palestine, were held July 11 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Sherman with the Rev. James Sproat officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Cemetery in Corsicana under the direction of Dannel Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rogers died July 8 in Sherman.
She was born in Emhouse in Navarro County to James and Mai Tippitt.
Mrs. Rogers graduated from the University of  Texas in Austin and was a Bluebonnet Belle and a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church and was active in numerous civic organizations in Sherman and Dallas.
She lived in Palestine for more than 25 years before moving to Sherman. During this time she was a member of First United Methodist Church of Palestine. She was a charter member of the Harvey Woman’s Club and served on the permanent board of that organization for many years. She also was a member of Dogwood Garden Club and the William Findley chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Mrs. Rogers is survived by her husband, Neilson Rogers of Sherman; son, Hunter Kay of Franklin, Tenn.; daughter, Elizabeth Kay Stites of Longview; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
If desired, memorials may be made to Harvey’s Woman’s Club in Palestine.

Ola Bell Bass Rodgers

Funeral arrangements for Ola Bell Bass Rodgers, 82, of Houston, and formerly of Palestine, are pending at McCoy Funeral Home.
Mrs. Rodgers died Monday in Houston.

Bobbie Lee Hudson

Services for Bobbie Lee Hudson, of Emerald Bay, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Herrington/Land of Memory Chapel with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating. Burial will follow at Land of Memory Cemetery.
Mrs. Hudson died Tuesday at a hospital in Metairie, La.
She was born in Palestine to Robert and Bessie Lee Giles Harp.
Mrs. Hudson was reared in Palestine. She was valedictorian and school favorite at Woodhouse High School in 1950. She also was a graduate of the University of Houston with a major in English. She received a master’s degree in British Literature from Tulane University.
Mrs. Hudson was a Christian.
She taught English in  Texas and  Louisiana schools for many years and was retired from  Jefferson Parish Public School System.
Mrs. Hudson was preceded in death by her father; and her husband, William R. Hudson, in 1981.
She is survived by her mother, Bessie Arrendell of Palestine; daughter, Donna Lee Morris of Loranger, La.; sons, Michael Hudson of Palestine and Robert D. Franks of Greers Ferry, Ark.; sister, Dorothy Ingram of Bullard; eight grandchildren; and longtime companion, Vincent Rodriguez.
Pallbearers will be James Ivey, Ronnie Hartman, Larry Ingram, Buddy Baker, Vince Rodriguez and John Keeling.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

F.M. “Merl” Butler

Services for F.M. “Merl” Butler, 76, of Palestine, will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Lyle Huntress officiating. Burial will follow in Roselawn Park under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mr. Butler died Thursday afternoon at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
He was born June 4, 1926, in Cleveland to Thomas Benjamin and Lillie Myrtis McDaniel Butler.
Mr. Butler was a machinist and worked for Knox Glass and Glass Containers. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3907 and the Disabled American Veterans.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Melvin Butler, J.B. Butler and Curtis Butler.
Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, Katheryn Ives Butler of Palestine; daughters, Cynthia McLendon, Debbie Swinson, Pam Walding, Teresa Douthit and Sandra Quick, all of Palestine; sisters, Dorothy Spivey of Houston and Margaret Bradshaw of Missouri; brother, Dennis Butler of Palestine; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Larry Walding, Paul McClendon, Jimmy Douthit, Rodney Huddleston, Steve Quick and Alan Walter.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Margarette A. Blakeley Swartzfager

Services for Margarette Astrolene Blakeley Swartzfager, 88, of Fairfield, will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses with Don Williams officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Capps Memorial Chapel in Fairfield.
Mrs. Swartzfager died Wednesday at a Teague Nursing Home.
She was born in Freestone County to John and Margaret Red Blakeley.
Mrs. Swartzfager worked in retail sales and was a member of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Fairfield.
She is survived by sister, Wilma Lambert Morris of Fairfield; brothers, Paul Blakeley of Westpoint, Miss. and Clyde Blakeley of Lubbock.

Opal L. Akin Luoma

Services for Opal L. Akin Luoma, 81, of Sachse, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Charles W. Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Sachse with the Rev. Denny Smith officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Land of Memory Cemetery in Palestine.
She is survived by a daughter, Delilah Vaughan; son, Jack McDearmon; sisters, Mary Lois Payne and Lucy Payne; brothers, Joey Akin, Tommy Akin, Pete Akin, Jerry Akin and Bill Akin; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Cleo Ruth “Pate” Massey Tilley

Services for Cleo Ruth “Pate” Massey Tilley, 85, of Jacksonville, will be 1 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church in Jacksonville with the Revs. Quin Pugh and Grady Higgs officiating. Burial will be in Jacksonville City Cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville.
Mrs. Tilley died Wednesday at her home.
She was born Dec. 6, 1916 in Tennessee Colony.
Mrs. Tilley was a 34-year employee with Newburn Hospital as a medical lab technologist. Upon retirement she became a Pink Lady for Nan Travis Hospital (East  Texas Medical Center) for 15 years.
She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Jacksonville. She was a Bible class instructor for 20 years, church organist for 10, and was a pianist for the Mary Martha Bible Study Class.
Mrs. Tilley graduated from Tennessee Colony High School and Jacksonville Business College and attended the Chicago College of Laboratory Technique and received her certificate as a medical laboratory technologist. She then earned her certification for cardiologist technologist from the American College of Cardiologists as well as attended courses in Christian education, physics and law at both Jacksonville and Lon Morris colleges. She was a pianist and member of Order of the Eastern Star for 25 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Park “Pat” Tilley; and stepson, F. Gordon Tilley.
Mrs. Tilley is survived by son, Pat Tilley of Jacksonville; stepdaughter, Helen Jane Tilley Austin of Dallas; sisters, Jewell Massey Newburn Walls and Mary Emma “Gem” Calcote, both of Jacksonville; brother, John Massey of Puerto Rico; a granddaughter; and five stepgrandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Doyce Bearden, Dr. Philip Bryan, Floyd Carter, Dr. Edwin Crank, Donald Lewis, Rayburn McCown, Oscar Smith and Jimmy Tankersley.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Marguerite Barnett

Services for Marguerite Barnett, 80, of Houston and formerly of Jacksonville, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Renfro Memorial Chapel at Boren-Conner Funeral Home in Jacksonville. The Rev. Lester Foreman will officiate. Burial will follow at Pierce Chapel Cemetery.
Mrs. Barnett died Wednesday at a Houston hospital.
She was born June 6, 1922, in Happy.
Mrs. Barnett was a Baptist and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Donlley Barnett; and sister, Dorothy Veach.
Mrs. Barnett is survived by daughters, Carol Gray and Dianne Haves, both of Houston; sister, Mary Pullin of Palestine; three grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be family members.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

K.J. Brown

Services for K.J. Brown, 73, of Dallas and formerly of Elkhart, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community First Baptist Church, 3535 S. Westmoreland St., in Dallas. Burial will follow at Laurel Land Park under the direction of Lott’s Mortuary.
Mr. Brown died Sunday at Doctors’ Hospital in Dallas.
A wake will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Lott’s Mortuary at 2434 M.L. King Jr. Blvd. in Dallas.

Herman Croft

Services for Herman Croft, 85, of Elkhart, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Fields Chapel Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Bowman officiating. Burial will be in the Fields Chapel Methodist Church Cemetery under the direction of Boren-Conner Funeral Home of Jacksonville.
Mr. Croft died Thursday morning in Palestine.
He was born Aug. 24, 1917, in Anderson County.
Mr. Croft was a lifelong resident of Elkhart, a Baptist and a farmer.
He was preceded in death by brothers, T.L. Croft and Lyndel Croft.
Mr. Croft is survived by his wife, Alice Croft of Elkhart; daughters, Florence Van Orden of Gallatin, Carol Cummings of Bullard and Gay Nell Croft of Elkhart; sister, Ozzie Mac Broom of Rusk; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Kathy James Cubstead

Services for Kathy “Kitty” James Cubstead, 55, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday graveside at Parker Cemetery with the Rev. Dub Davis officiating. Burial will be in Parker Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Palestine.
Mrs. Cubstead died Thursday evening at Hospice Home Place in Tyler.
She was born Aug. 28, 1947, in Palestine to Loyd James and Edna James.
Mrs. Cubstead was preceded in death by her mother.
She is survived by her father; daughters, Dee Dee Mock of Slocum and Laura Ann Cubstead of Lovelady; and two grandchildren.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Rebecca Louise Tutt

Services for Rebecca Louise Tutt, 70, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Smith Chapel Church of God in Christ with the Revs. Milton Algood, Freddie Henry, Billy McClelland and Myron Waddle officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mrs. Tutt died Nov. 15 at her residence.
She was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Palestine to Authur and Minnie Ola Henry.
Mrs. Tutt attended Lincoln High School.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Allen Tutt; siblings, Bennie Lee Henry, Arthur Lee Henry, Catherine Henry Oggs and Callie Mae Henry.
Mrs. Tutt is survived by daughters, Carolyn Louise Turner and Marilyn Yvonne Tutt, both of Palestine; sister, Leola  Jackson of Palestine; brothers, the Rev. Freddie Henry of Dallas, John A. Henry of Houston and Willie James Henry o Palestine; eight grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Robert Allen, Greg Ester, Jimmy Henry, Malcolm Lampkin, Ronnie Sweet and Terrance Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe Cummings, Vernon Howard and David Woodard.

Alberta Ford

Funeral arrangements for Alberta Ford, 96, formerly of Oakwood, are pending at Emanuel Funeral Home.
Mrs. Ford died Wednesday in Hobbs, N.M.

Margaret Sutton Read

Services for Margaret Sutton Read, 82, of Palestine will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Palestine City Cemetery with the Rev. Jay Abernathy officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Read died Tuesday at Cartmell Home for the Aged.
She was born Aug. 20, 1920, in Palestine to Huey James and Sarah Lucile  Johnson Sutton.
Mrs. Read was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ray Weldon Read; son, Ray W. Read Jr.; sister, Rachel Saxton; and brother, Miles C. Sutton.
Mrs. Read is survived by grandson, Shawn Read of Arlington; sister, Lucile Boyd of Palestine; and sister-in-law, Joye Sutton of Palestine; and locally by nieces, Martha Davis, Ann Royall Maffitt and Lecil Peery, all of Palestine.
Pallbearers will be Tucker Boyd Royall, Charles C. Davis Jr., Rhodes Baker III, Stephen Sutton, James E. Saxton, Mike Peery and Ted Maffitt.

Ludie (Dutch) Stovall Marshman

Services for Ludie (Dutch) Stovall Marshman, 92, of Pensacola, Fla., and formerly of Palestine, were held March 8 at Eastern Gate Memorial Gardens in Pensacola with the Rev. Philip McVay officiating.
Mrs. Marshman, a native of Rusk, died at Azalea Trace Nursing Home from complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.
