Alice Pearl Kuykendall Murphy
Services for Alice Pearl “Blondie” Kuykendall Murphy, 73, of Grapeland, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church of Grapeland with the Revs. J.E. Murphy and Dean Reeves officiating. Burial will follow with a 3 p.m. graveside service at Camp Ruby Cemetery in Livingston under the direction of Bailey & Foster, Grapeland.
Mrs. Murphy died Monday at East Texas Medical Center in Crockett.
She was born March 18, 1928, in Carisso Springs to Aylor Author Kuykendall and Pearl Alice Walker Kuykendall.
Mrs. Murphy was a bus driver for Liberty School District for many years. She was a life member of the PTA in Liberty. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Grapeland. She was a direct descendant of the Old 300, the first 300 settlers who came to Texas with Stephen F. Austin.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Glenda Pearl Murphy; sister, Jo Ann Bullard; and brother, John Bailey.
Mrs. Murphy is survived by her husband, M.B. Murphy of Grapeland; daughters, Laura Moore of Liberty and Shanna Bonvillian of Grapeland; son, “Lucky” Melton Murphy of Raywood; brothers, Art Thomas Kuykendall, Author Aylor Kuykendall, June Woods Bailey and Earnest Kuykendall; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be David Bryan Murphy, Alan Jett Murphy, William Travis Murphy, Timothy Allen Whittaker, Eric Ryan Gould and Ernest Aylor.
Honorary pallbearers will be June Woods Bailey, Charles Duayne Whittaker, Jett Tyler Murphy and Dakota Bryan Whittaker.
Condolence calls will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
John J. “Shine” DeFoor Jr.
Services for John J. “Shine” DeFoor Jr., 76, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Bailey & Foster Chapel with the Rev. Barney Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Strong Memorial Park Cemetery.
Mr. DeFoor died Saturday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
He was born Sept. 27, 1925, in Prescott, Ark. to John J. DeFoor Sr. and Lillie Pierce DeFoor.
Mr. DeFoor retired from Dow Chemical Co. in Freeport after 30 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Palestine Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.
Mr. DeFoor is survived by his wife of 53 years, Joyce Johnston DeFoor of Palestine; sisters, Zelda Quimby of Rusk, Mary Lois Woodard of Lufkin and Bobbie Patterson of Freeport; and brother, Albert DeFoor of Abilene.
Pallbearers will be Palestine DAV members.

Glen O. Mortenson
Services for Glen O. Mortenson, 64, of Palestine, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Herrington/Land of Memory Chapel with Dr. Barry Roberts officiating.
Mr. Mortenson died Saturday at his residence.
He was born Feb. 25, 1938, in Bisbee, Ariz. to Oral R. and Leatha O. Edge Mortenson.
Mr. Mortenson was reared in Arizona and lived in Tennessee before moving to Palestine two years ago. He was retired from the Federal Railroad Administration and Union Pacific Railroad. He also had worked with a prison ministry in Tennessee.
He was a member of Evangelistic Temple in Palestine. He served in the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Mortenson is survived by his mother, Leatha Mortenson of Palestine; wife, Linda Mortenson of Palestine; son, Charles Mortenson of Tennessee; daughters, Glenda Pitre of Louisiana and Doris Cannon of Red Oak; brothers, Duane Mortenson and Leslie Mortenson, both of Arizona; sisters, Audrey Rohwer of Austin and Marilyn Allaire of Oregon; and seven grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be Duane Mortenson, Leslie Mortenson, Ivan Folley, Stafford McCracken, Leland Harris, Robert Clark and Robert McNamara.
Visitation will be Thursday evening at the residence.

Warren Dean Fox
Services for Warren Dean Fox, 52, of Poynor, will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Myrtle Springs Cemetery in Larue. Thompson Funeral Home in Jacksonville is handling arrangements.
Mr. Fox died May 11 in Poynor.
He was born Jan. 19, 1950 in Canadian.
Mr. Fox is survived by sons, Jody Fox of McKinney and Shannen Fox of Dallas; his mother, Mary Fox of Dallas; brothers, Don Weaver of Muskogee, Okla., Ed Fox of Germany and Sammy Fox of Oklahoma City, Okla.; sisters, Mary Belle Wootton of Amarillo, Alice Johnson of Terrell, Donna Chandler, Sue Meshell and Rila Fox, all of Dallas, and Diane Smith of Moore, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.
Honorary pallbearers will be Derrell Norman, Chris Ethrich, Steven Johnson, Tommy Sharp, Tommy Johnson and Bobby Ivey.
Eleanor Word Nance Curtis
Services for Eleanor Word Nance Curtis, 84, of Palm Beach, Fla., and formerly of Palestine, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Palestine with her grandson, the Rev. James H. Booker officiating. Interment will be at East Hill Cemetery in Palestine.
Mrs. Curtis died May 3 at her residence.
She was a fifth-generation Texan, having lived in Palm Beach for the past 32 years. Her great-great-great-great-grandfather served under George Washington in the French and Indian Wars. Her great-great-grandfather Thomas Jefferson Word was among the early settlers of Palestine and was one of the founders of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Palestine. He and his brother James represented their states, Texas and Georgia, in the recession from the Union.
Mrs. Curtis was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Daughters of the Confederacy, Daughters of the Texas Revolution and the Sailfish Club of Florida.
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Edward William Curtis of Palm Beach; son, Edward William Curtis Jr. of New Orleans; daughter, Eleanor Nance Curtis Booker of Houston; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Scott Griffin

Katherine Moffett
Services for Katherine Moffett, 51, of Palestine, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Southside Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Holcombe officiating. Burial will follow in Porter Springs Cemetery near Crockett under the direction of Herrington/Land of Memory Funeral Home.
Mrs. Moffett died Wednesday at Palestine Regional Medical Center.
She was born Jan. 23, 1951 in Houston to Edward and Evedean Vaughn Moffett.
Mrs. Moffett was reared in Baker and had lived in Palestine for 12 years coming here from the Houston area. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church in Palestine.
Mrs. Moffett graduated from Katy High School and Wharton County Junior College with a degree in nursing. She had worked in the Palestine Dialysis Center.
She is survived by her parents of Porter Springs; grandfather, Donald Salter of Dallas; daughters, Leah Fort and Vicki Calk, both of Palestine; brother, Robert Moffett of Crockett; sister, Pam Yahnke of Katy; and two grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Larry Mayberry, Bobby Yahnke, Robert Moffett, Glenn Mayberry, Nathan Moffett, Trey DeVillier and Jarrett DeVillier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Caroline “Carlene” Moore
Services for Caroline “Carlene” Moore, 71, of Mesquite, and formerly of Palestine, will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Broyles Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. R.L. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Broyles Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Bailey & Foster.
Mrs. Moore died Wednesday at her home.
She was born June 20, 1931 in Palestine to Carl Barnett and Tressie Gammon Barnett.
Mrs. Moore was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sunnyvale. She belonged to the Order of the Eastern Star. Before retiring, Mrs. Moore worked in customer service for Ben E. Keith Company.
She is survived by daughters, Sidnee Bertucci and Amy Moore, both of Mesquite; son, Royce Moore of Austin; brother, Billy Ray Barnett of Tyler; and five grandchildren.

Vernon “Pig” Leroy Morgan
Services for Vernon “Pig” Leroy Morgan, 63, of Palestine, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Herrington/Land of Memory Chapel.
Mr. Morgan died Tuesday at Palestine Healthcare Center.
He was born Sept. 3, 1938 in Dallas to Vernon Walter and Lillie Bernice Ball Giles.
Mr. Morgan was raised in Kilgore before moving to Palestine six years ago. He was an antique furniture refinisher.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma Morgan, in 1991.
Mr. Morgan is survived by daughter, Jennifer Parker of Palestine; brothers, Timmy Morgan and Donnie Reid, both of Kilgore; sister, Becky Dillard of Kilgore; and three grandsons.

Jim Dick Blocker
Services for Jim Dick Blocker, 66, of Oakwood, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at 6268 CR 298 in Oakwood.
Mr. Blocker died July 1. He was cremated. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Blocker was a former U.S. Marine. After an honorable discharge from the service he worked as a cabinet maker and carpenter.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Lee Blocker of Oakwood; children, Robert Lee Blocker of Oakwood, Mollie Marie Harmon of Palestine, Jimmy Lee Blocker and Kimberly Marie Kinsman, both of Michigan, and Christopher Lee Blocker of Oakwood; sisters, Pauline Hammons of Fort Worth, and Mary Gearheart and Joyceann Garbitt, both of Indiana; 19 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Billy Gene Servance
Services for Billy Gene Servance, 65, of Houston, and formerly of Oakwood, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Brown Chapel AME Church in Oakwood. Burial will follow in Brown Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Emanuel Funeral Home in Teague.
Mr. Servance died July 5 in Houston.
He was born Jan. 23, 1937, to Prestell and Ivy Lee Tippens Servance.
Mr. Servance received his education at Butler High School in Oakwood and attended Prairie View A&M University where he majored in graphic arts design. After college, his career started at Savage Laboratories, a pharmaceutical company, as head of graphic design. He also worked at Armstrong Printers and Yates Printers of Houston. He started Sir Vance Advertising & Printing Co.
Mr. Servance also became a commercial builder and house painter, and later operated an antique shop. He attended Brown Chapel AME Church as a child and later united with The Doctrine of Christ Christian Center.
Mr. Servance is survived by his wife of 42 years, Shirley Servance of Houston; children, Parrish C. Servance, Van Eric Servance, Pierre A. Servance, Modero V. Servance, Shawn M. Servance and Devonae Servance, all of Houston; brothers, Morris Servance of Chicago, and Chester Servance and Preston Servance, both of Baytown; sisters, Bernie Brooks of Houston and Tamera Servance of Baytown; and seven grandchildren.
Ruth Pipes
Services for Ruth Pipes, 68, of Concord, will be at 2 p.m. today at Walters Funeral Home Chapel in Centerville with the Rev. Cliff Lamb officiating. Burial will be in Concord Cemetery.
Mrs. Pipes died Friday in Weatherford.
She was born May 9, 1934 in Dallas to Vernon Livingston Word and Ruth Ross Word.
Mrs. Pipes grew up in Lovelady and attended Sam Houston University. She was a school teacher who taught in Palestine and Tennessee Colony. She retired in 1989.
Mrs. Pipes was a Methodist and was an accomplished pianist.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Mrs. Pipes is survived by her husband, Billie Cale Pipes of Concord; daughters, Peri Pipes Pool of Plano and Kelly Pipes Bruner of Milsap.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home chapel
