Le Vrier

Mary Frances doesn’t live here anymore. She has gone to spend eternity with Mr. Jim. In Saratoga, Texas, at midnight, December 10, 1916, a baby girl was born to “Miss Kate” and R.A. Hudgins. They named her Mary Frances.

In Saratoga, Texas, at midnight, December 10, 1916, a baby girl was born to “Miss Kate” and R.A. Hudgins. They named her Mary Frances. When she was eight years old, Santa left her a brand new pair of ball-bearing roller skates. Skating became her life-time hobby. It didn’t matter whether it was in a skating rink that played waltz-time music or on a city sidewalk. She would strap on a pair of skates and skate with the wind, sometimes alone, sometimes with a partner.

Her father followed the oil booms, so they lived in many places in Texas. She attended schools in Italy, Marlin, Mexia, Victoria and Beeville. After graduating from Beeville High School in 1935, she entered Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College in San Marcos where she majored in Elementary Education. While skating in the college park, she met, and later fell in love with Jim Le Vrier from Daisetta. After a two-year campus romance, they married in Pettus, Texas on September 8, 1937. Jim taught school in Rye, Honey Island and Daisetta. During this time they had three children…Bobby, Beverly and Gary. On vacations the family traveled extensively. After World War II, Jim was employed by Texaco Oil Company with whom he worked until his sudden death in 1976.

Attaching a title to Mary Frances is difficult. She was a lifetime member of the Methodist Church.

In Daisetta, she ran the gamut from pulpit to janitorial duties, when needed.

Through the years she taught Sunday School classes for adults, youth and children.

She served on the Administrative Board, was Church Lay Leader, Recording Secretary, Communion Steward, Educational Director, Membership Chairman, and for years served on the Bereavement and Memorial Committees. She served many years as President of the Women’s Society of Christian Service, where she received an Honorary Life-time Membership Pin and later held office in the United Methodist Womens Union.

In 1953, the membership of the Daisetta Church outgrew their little building. There was a contest and Mrs. Le Vrier’s floor plan was accepted for the new brick church we worship in today. She wrote, directed and produced some comical, sometimes serious entertainment for monthly church fellowship suppers. Hull-Daisetta Administrators and Faculty looked forward, as guests, each September to the Methodist supper and Mrs. Le Vrier’s entertainment. In April each year the graduating classes eagerly anticipated her hilarious programs at, as they called it “Mrs. Le Vriers” church. Next to her church and family, she loved and mothered all children.

She was a substitute teacher for all classes in the Hull-Daisetta School System for 25 years.

Her tree-shaded lawn was the “unofficial city playground” where young boys came to play games of all kinds, summer and winter.

Through their school years, she was room mother for each of her three children. She held offices in Hull and Daisetta PTA’s and was the first recipient of an Honorary Lifetime Membership given by the Daisetta Parent-Teacher Association. She taught Parliamentary Law courses and installed officers in several area organizations. Mrs. Le Vrier directed weddings for friends and former students of various denominations. She helped organize the Hull-Daisetta Community Center, serving as its first Treasurer. She was selected General Chairperson for the first Hull-Daisetta Mardi Gras in the late 1950’s Mary Frances was very active in the Hull-Daisetta Study Club, holding local and Magnolia district offices and several capacities in the Federation of Women’s Club. During one of her terms of office as President of the study club, she with Coach Thompson and Coach Evans, named the streets of Daisetta.

The Lions Club became interested and bought the metal street signs and had them installed at every street intersection. Jim and Mary were active in the local Cub Scouting program. For 52 years she worked in the Local, County, State and General elections, starting as a clerk, but retired in 1998 as the Presiding Judge. In 1999, the First United Methodist Church of Daisetta honored Mary Frances with a reception recognizing her for many years of service and exceptional contributions to her church. Some church men called her “Saint Mary” while other friends called her a grand lady. At her wedding ceremony to Jim in 1937, she quoted the pledge of Ruth to Naomi from the Old Testament (Ruth 1: 16-17) and she faithfully kept that promise. As the years passed and the steps began to falter, God’s Guardian Angel gently took her hand and led her to Jim. She will be missed.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Jim, her parents Kate and R.A. Hudgins, three sisters, Iva Watts, Montez Hudgins, and Bethel Ediger. She is survived by her children; Bobby and Billie Le Vrier of Kissimmee, Fl., Beverly and Gary Nelms of Garland, TX., Belva and Gary Le Vrier of Irving, TX., eight Grandchildren, fourteen Great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

All friends, family and former students of Mary Frances are kindly invited to visit with the family from 5pm until 8pm on Sunday, January 15, 2012, at Allison Funeral Service Chapel, 1101 N. Travis St., Liberty, Texas 77575, and to “Celebrate the Life of Mary Frances Le Vrier” at 2pm, Monday, January 16, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church of Daisetta, Texas .
