Lewis

Karen Lynn Holt Lewis, 55, of Dayton, died Sunday, October 23, 2011.

She was born April 28, 1956 in Houston to parents Elmer “Lloyd” Holt and Rose Frances Dunn Holt. Karen graduated in Houston from Robert E. Lee High School in 1974 and had previously worked for Haliburton. She enjoyed reading, movies, computer spades and most of all she loved being a mother to her daughters. Karen attended Trinity Baptist Church in Dayton.

Graveside services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 29, 2011 at Linney cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Dayton. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday, October 28, 2011 at the funeral home and 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday before the service.

Karen was preceded in death by her father Elmer “Lloyd” Holt and is survived by her daughters: Brieanna Massey of Dayton and Ashlee Abernathy of Apopka, FL; her mother: Rose Dunn Holt of Dayton; her sisters: Leslie Castillo and husband Carl of Waco and Diane Driver of Houston; her grandchildren: Kaitlyn DeBoard, Chase DeBoard, Davin Scott, and Rylee Scott; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Gaines

Robert Hobaugh Gaines, 90, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, October 25, 2011, in Liberty, Texas.

Bob was born in Ely, Nevada, on July 31, 1921, to Benjamin Burgess and Ruth Elizabeth Hobaugh Gaines. The family moved to Colorado where Bob finished school. He attended college at the University of Missouri. Bob later joined the United States Army and proudly served during World War II in England, France and Austria.

Upon his return from the war, Bob moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, where he worked for Pontiac Refinery. Several years later, he joined the convenience store business in Houston where he worked for Utotem and Handi Plus in the real estate office securing sites for new stores.

Bob was a lifetime member of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Commercial Exhibits Committee. He spent many years working the shows and helping exhibitors from all over the world enjoy their Houston rodeo experience. Additionally, Bob was a football referee and baseball umpire for little league through high school. His hobbies included woodworking, reading and a love of all Houston sports teams, especially the Houston Astros.

Bob is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and David Smith of Liberty; grandsons Cody of San Antonio and Kyle Smith of Liberty; sister, Barbara Barnes of The Woodlands; and four special nephews, Robert of Simi Valley, California; Bill and Dan of The Woodlands; and Rick Barnes of Tomball, and their families.

At Bob’s request, no service will be held. His cremated remains will be interred at the Houston National cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the "The Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo Educational Fund in memory of Robert Hobaugh Gaines by contacting them at: Educational Fund Contribution, please contact the Show's Educational Programs Department at scholarship@rodeohouston.com to further the education of the youth of Liberty County. Services are under the direction of Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis, Liberty, Texas.

Carlton

Juanita Ann Carlton, 55, of New Caney, Texas, died on Monday, October 24, 2011 in Memorial Northeast Hospital in Houston.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister and friend.

A memorial service will be at a later date under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

Juanita is survived by her daughter, Christina Wilpers; son, David Rivas; grandchildren, Samantha Midkiff and Sabrina Wilpers; brother, C.J. Smith; sister, Brenda Carlton; and a host of other family and friends.

Mendez

Alejandro Mendez, 29, of Dayton, died on Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Dayton due to an automobile accident.

He was a loving son, brother, father and uncle.

He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Liberty and worked in the construction field. Some of his joys life included spending time with family and friends and playing basketball.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 29, 2011 in the chapel of Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park in Dayton. A gathering of Alejandro’s family and friends will be from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 P.M. on Friday, October 28, 2011 at the funeral home.

Alejandro is survived by his daughter, Makayla Mendez; mother, Antonia Gonzalez; brothers, Rolando Mendez, Andres Mendez, Jesus Mendez; sisters, Elizabeth Mendez and her husband, Julio Torres, Liliana Mendez and her husband, Rocky Buras; nephews: Jonathon Torres, Anthony Buras, Carlos Mendez; nieces: Angela Mendez, Alayah Mendez, Aleesia Torres, Kristina Buras; loved one, Ashley Jones and a host of other family and friends in both Mexico and the United States.

McCauley

Robert Wayne McCauley, age 71, died Monday, October 24, 2011 at Conroe Regional Medical Center after a long battle with lung cancer.

He was born January 16, 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana to Robert Lee McCauley and Sarah Arlene Gilmore and was Baptist in faith. In the early years he raised his family in Cleveland, Texas, then in later years, he and his family left Port Arthur to settle in Shepherd, Texas where he worked at Concrete Ready Mix for many years. Robert loved animals and his passion was heartfelt. He raised and farmed chickens for 20+ years. His family was the light of his life, he will be remembered lovingly and may the brightness of his soul find its place in Heaven and shine down on his family and many friends forever more.

Survivors include his loving wife, Gay McCauley; daughters, Glenda Sherman, Kristy Jones and husband, Tom, Veronica Trimble; sisters, Patricia Holmquist and husband, Don, Barbara Dellinger and husband, Jerry, Linda Griffin; brother, Jimmy D. Simmons and wife, Ruth; grandchildren, Robbie Sherman and wife, Lane, Brian Sherman and Connor Ouzts; great-grandchildren, Taylor Sherman, Colton Sherman, and Beau Sherman; numerous other cherished family members and treasured friends throughout the years.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 26, 2011, 5:00-9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Coldspring, Texas. Bro. Carl Williamson will preside over graveside services being held 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Farley Chapel cemetery, Shepherd, Texas. Pallbearers include Kevin Godejohn, Vernon Jones, Robbie Sherman, Thomas Leonard, Tom Jones, and Richard Scoggins; honorary pallbearers include Jimmy Simmons, Conner Ouzts, Stanley Penny, Bubba Yawn, and Jerry Dellinger.

Patton

Tristen Javier Patton, infant son of Mary Bailey and Darrel Patton died Wednesday, October 19, 2011 in Houston, Texas.

Graveside services for Tristen will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 26, 2011 at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens, FM 2025, Cleveland, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

He is survived by his parents, his brother: Christian Bailey of Dayton; grandmother: Lillian Bailey; grandfather: Henry Anderson; aunts: Mitzy and Vanita Kendrick, Shamek Bailey, and Danell Kendrick; Uncle Rhykeen Bailey, and Daniel and Shaleah Kendrick; also a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.

Dark

Funeral Service for Frank Dark, 84, of Liberty, will be held at, 11:00 AM, on Friday, October 28, 2011 at Liberty Church of Christ, 3201 N Main Street, Liberty.

The second of eleven children born to Miles and Grace Robinson Dark, he passed away on Friday, October 21, 2011 at Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center. He attended school in Liberty completing the eighth grade before beginning work in the pipeline industry including Entex Gas Company. The pipeline industry became a lifetime career, traveling all across the country. Always one to enjoy a party, Frank owned and operated “The House of Blue Lights” a local bar and club that was known as a central spot for drinks, good music and entertainment. This establishment was known for weekly highlights called “Blue Monday” and “Blue Tuesday”.

Frank retired in the late eighties, but continued to enjoy life by playing dominoes and fishing, seeming to always have a fisherman tale to go with it. Later in life, he met and loved the joy of his life, Jo Ann Brooks Spears, and the two remained a cohesive union until her passing. In his final years, Frank made his confession of salvation in Jesus Christ, calling it the “best decision of his life.” and was baptized by and united with Church of Christ in Liberty, Texas. He attended there faithfully until his health declined. Following extended illness, he became a resident at the Liberty Health Care Center, Liberty, Texas and continued to be as fiery there as he always had been in life.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents, brother: Larry Dark and sisters: Mary Dark, Lizzie Dark, Esther B. Ward, Jessie-Dark Board, and Grace Brown.

Frank leaves to cherish his memory one brother: Wilbert Dark, four sisters: Rosie Codwell, and Lois Randolph, both of Vallejo, CA., Jenny V. Hawkins, of San Francisco, CA. and Zaney Stroughter, of Dayton; one step son: Darren Spears, Sr., of Liberty and one step-daughter: Winifree Spears of Houston, a caring caregiver and devoted niece: Dr. Sheri Dark, numerous nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.

McAllister

Giannina McAllister, 83, died Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Baytown.

Giannina was born February 1, 1928 in Piazzola Sul Brenta in the Padova Province of Italy, the daughter of the late Mario Meneghello and Chiara Rondon Meneghello. She met her husband, Marvin Eric McCallister while he was in the service and married January 1, 1958 in Livorno, Italy. They later moved to Alabama, where she became a naturalized citizen in 1975. She was proud to learn English and to receive her driver’s license. She enjoyed painting, sewing and all art and crafts. She believed in the “old ways” following her Italian heritage when cooking and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents as well as her sisters, Maria Meneghello, Norma Meneghello Chiarotto, and Emma Meneghello Ronchi, and a brother Achille Meneghello.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory her husband Marvin Eric McCallister of Liberty, daughter Alice Fay McCallister Carroll and her husband Paul Franklin Carroll of Hardin, sisters Milena Meneghello Rondon and Santina Meneghello Gambirasi both of Italy, grandchildren Joshua Eric Carroll and Jessica Hope Carroll both of Hardin, step-grandson Jeremiah Franklin Carroll of LaMarque. In addition she leaves numerous nieces and nephews in the United States as well as Italy and France. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

A funeral service will be held 11AM Wednesday October 26, 2011 at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas with a visitation to be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will immediately follow the service in Liberty Catholic cemetery. .

Williams

Karen Fern Williams, 52, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2011 in Oklahoma.

Karen was born September 19, 1959 in Pine Bluff, AK the daughter of Russell Amaden and Evelyn Camden Easterling Hamilton. Karen loved to read, watch movies, and be with her dogs. She was an avid collector of everything elephant. She enjoyed experiencing new cultures through their food and languages. A world traveler she spent time throughout Europe and the Middle East. Karen also spent time teaching special needs children.

She was preceded in death by her father Russell Charles Amaden, brother Jimmy Randolp, sister and brother-in-law Rita Cynthia Armstrong and her husband Gary Lee Armstrong, and a mother-in-law Evelyn Williams.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband of thirty-three years Claude Williams of Liberty, daughter Brandi Ainsworth and her husband Charles of Liberty, son Eric Williams of Fayetteville, North Carolina, daughter Kelsie Williams of Decatur, AK, mother Evelyn Easterling Hamilton of Decatur, AK., sisters Sandy Hamilton of Albuquerque, NM and Sharon Lackey of Decatur, AK., father-in-law J.P. Williams of Liberty, as well as numerous nephews and a niece.

Visitation will be held Thursday October 27, 2011 from 5PM to 7:30PM with a memorial service to be held at 7:30PM at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas. A graveside service will be held 11AM Friday October 28, 2011 in Sweeny cemetery in Sweeny, Texas.

Damek

John Damek, Jr., 87, of Tucson, Arizona, died on Friday, October 21, 2011. Born in Dayton, he was a lifelong resident of the Dayton community. John served his country during World War II and after the war, began working for Rose Truck Line as a mechanic. Once retired, John enjoyed spending time with his family, working on vehicles, raising cattle, and gardening. John and his wife Joy moved to Tucson four years ago to live with Keith and Martha.

Services for Mr. Damek will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, October 27, 2011 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, 1304 N. Cleveland (Hwy 321) in Dayton, Texas. Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Magnolia Park cemetery.

Mr. Damek was preceded in death by parents, John Damek, Sr., and Mary Graeff Damek, brothers: Buster, Charlie, and Robert Damek, along with sister Margie Damek-Tucker. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Joy Damek, their two children Cindy Damek-Fernandez and husband Philip of Tampa, Florida and Keith Damek and wife Martha of Tucson, Arizona along with grandchildren Lauren Fernandez, Philip Fernandez, Jr., and Ryan Damek, five siblings, Doris Damek-Alston, Ollie Damek-Davis, Sonny Damek, Herman Damek, and Shorty Damek, also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Austin

Robert “Bob” Dale Austin, Sr., 65, of Thicket, died at home Wednesday, October 19, 2011.

He was born July 11, 1946 in Angelina County to parents Isiah “Ike” Austin and Ruth Franklin Austin. A longtime resident of Thicket he had worked for Basil Oilfield Service. He loved fishing, camping, and most of all being with his family and friends.

Services for Mr. Austin will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 2011 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will be 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Saturday evening at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Moss Hill cemetery.

Mr. Austin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 40 years: Betty Alean Ferguson Austin and brother: Byford Harvey Austin. He is survived by his daugthers: Lisa Nugent and husband Jerry of Hardin and Cynthia Cook and husband Danny of Moss Hill; sons: Robert Austin, Jr. and wife Amanda of Thicket, William Austin and Donna Frazier of Dayton, and Dickie Austin and wife Tina of Thicket; grandchildren: Nicole, Katelyn, Kelly, Aaron, Danny Jr., Magen, Nick, James, Amelia, and Darren; great-grandchildren: Anthony, Harley, Leeanna, Nathan, Cesar Jr.; sisters: Vernell Tilton & Jerry, Sundra Gilliam and John, Mary McRae and Dave, Joann Puck, Flora Windham and Jamie, and Lynn Sasser.

The family request in lieu of flowers memorials be made in Mr. Austin’s name to the American Cancer Society.

Hartzell

Evelyn Hartzell, 82, of Liberty, Texas, died at her home on October 20, 2011 in Liberty, Texas.

She was cared for by her husband Robert and her faithful canine companion Jo-Jo until she succumbed.

Evelyn M. Galbraith Hartzell was born November 28, 1928 in Lincoln County Colorado, near Haswell to Clyde E. Galbraith and Mildred White Galbraith. She was the third born of seven children. Evelyn attended both elementary and high school in Hugo, Colorado where she graduated from high school. She pursued further education at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado.

Evelyn moved to Dallas, Texas with her daughter Victoria and worked there for several years finally moving to Beaumont, Texas. When in Beaumont she became employed with the Szafirs Office Supply as a sales person calling on customers, doing design work and selling systems and supplies to the industries there. She developed a solid base of customers and serviced their accounts for 40 plus years as she enjoyed working at Szafirs, with her customers, and was rewarded with steady business from her clientele.

Evelyn married Robert F. Hartzell in Jefferson County in 1968. In 1970 her grandson, Marc Reed came to live with Evelyn and Robert. Many happy times were experienced watching a young lad growing into adulthood.

In 1995 Evelyn decided to join the Catholic Church. She and Robert attended RCIA together at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and on April 2, 1994, she was baptized, made her first communion, was confirmed and she and Robert were remarried in the Immaculate Conception Church by father August Pucar. Evelyn loved her church.

Evelyn is survived by her husband: Robert Hartzell of Liberty; her daughter: Victoria and Thomas Freudiger of Plano; her granddaughter: Jovanna Smith of Frisco, and her grandson: Marc Reed and wife Crystal of Beaumont; her great grandchildren: Taylor and Kendal Reed of Beaumont; sisters: Marge and Keith Coates, Linda and Melvin Beede, and Jackie Galbraith all of Loveland, Colorado; her brother Melvin and Verlee Galbraith of Arnolds Park, Iowa; numerous other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Clyde & Mildred Galbraith, her sister: Helen Matthews and brother Jerry Galbraith.

A graveside service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, October 24, 2011 at the Catholic cemetery in Liberty, Texas with Rev. Sebastain Myladiyil officiating on October 24, 2011. Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

DeLoach

Shaun Edward DeLoach, age 46, died suddenly Thursday October 20, 2011.

Shaun was born March 28, 1965 in Odessa, Texas the son of John DeLoach and Carol Ann Banister DeLoach. Shaun was a graduate of Hardin High School and worked as a truck driver for numerous years.

He was preceded in death by his mother Carol Ann DeLoach.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his father John DeLoach and his wife Betsy of Daisetta, daughters Katherine DeLoach of Baytown and Ashley DeLoach of Anahuac, sisters Margaret Lynn Sharp of Daisetta, Teresa Hunt and husband Rusty of Daisetta, Connie Fain and husband John of Spring, Regina Carraway of Magnolia, and Dawn Helms of Batson. In addition Shaun leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A Funeral Service will be held 2PM Monday October 24, 2011 at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas.

Fitzhugh

Hazel Fitzhugh, 86, formerly of Dayton, died on Thursday, October 20, 2011 in Baytown. She was a loving mother grandmother and great grandmother.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton under the direction Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton.

A gathering of Hazel’s family and friends will be from 9:00 to 9:45 A.M. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the funeral home.

Mrs. Fitzhugh was preceded in death by her husband, Ovie Fitzhugh, granddaughter, Melissa Fitzhugh Lopez and great-grandson, Landan Fitzhugh Lopez. Hazel loved, sewing, cooking and being with her children and grandchildren.

Hazel is survived by her sons, Richard Fitzhugh and wife Susan, Jerry Fitzhugh and Tim Fitzhugh; 8 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
