Phipps

Patricia Ann Phipps, 59, of Liberty, died on Saturday January 29, 2011. She was a life-long resident of Liberty and a member of the Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents Raymond and Lorene Coughlin and brother, Francis Coughlin.

She is survived by her husband Jimmy Phipps; sisters, Nancy Vaughn and husband Everett, Lorene Tywater and husband Kenneth; brothers, Raymond Coughlin and wife Gloria, Joe Coughlin and wife Marylin, George Coughlin and wife Rena; numerous nieces and nephews.

A Graveside service was scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Wednesday February 2, 2010 at Hardin Chapel cemetery, officiated by Kelly McCain.

Honorary pallbearers are Dewitt Thompson, Russell Thompson, William Bankhead, Chad Vaughn, Travis Mckeand, Troy Vaughn and Everett Vaughn.

Cottrell

Tom E. Cottrell, 61, of Dayton, died Friday, February 11, 2011, at the Harris Methodist Hospital in Ft. Worth.

Memorial services will be held at a later date. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Tom was born February 15, 1949 in Bastrop, LA, to parents; Henry Cottrell and Georgia Sheffield, a former resident of Baytown, and has resided in the Dayton area for the past 15 years. He was a veteran of the US Marine Corps, a retired crane operator for Bay LTD of Friendswood, and a member of the Local Union #450. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, and horses.

Mr. Cottrell was preceded in death by his wife: Carolyn Fletcher Cottrell, father: Henry Cottrell, mother: Georgia Sheffield Peterson, and sister: Helen May. He is survived by his daughters: Michelle Cottrell Wagner and husband Tim of Boyd and Lisa Cottrell of Houston, grandchildren: Blake Roland, Timothy Wagner, and Jacob Wagner, sisters: Linda Andrews of Mt. Belvieu and Carolyn Driskill of West Monroe, LA, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Morris

Hazel Kelso Morris, 96, of Baytown, died on Thursday, February 10, 2011.

She was born October 12, 1914 in Gatesville, Texas. She enjoyed gardening. She lived her life as a devout Christian. She married the love of her life, Patton Newton Morris, in Turnerville, Texas September 6, 1936. She later moved to Baytown where she was active in the First Baptist Church. She later moved to Highlands then Kenefick where she was active in the Friendship Church and later the Kenefick Southern Baptist Church. She was also active in the Kenefick Activity Center.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Patton Newton Morris; son, Mike Dale Morris; daughter, Judith Arlene Morris; parents, Walter and Adeline Kelso, sister, Nell Leggett, brothers, Melvin Kelso and Gordon Kelso.

She is survived by her son, Walter Pat Morris and wife George Anna; daughter-in-law, Ramona Morris; grandchildren, Randal Pat Morris, Steven Ray Morris and wife Lee Ann, Andrew Morris and Miranda Morris; great grandchildren, Patrick Morris, Corrine Morris and Rae Ann Morris, numerous nieces and nephews.

Her family will receive friends at Sterling Funeral Home of Dayton on Monday February 14, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 P.M. Tuesday February 15, 2011 at Sterling Funeral Home of Dayton, officiated by Pastor Jeff Day. Burial will follow at Palms cemetery in Dayton.

Arrangements are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home 602 N. Main, Dayton, Texas, 77535 (936) 258 2215.

Whitley

Betty Joyce Breaux Whitley, 82, of Liberty, died Thursday, February 10, 2011 at Liberty Health Care Center. She was born April 17, 1928 in Orange, Texas to parents: M.J. and Nola Broussard Breaux.

Mrs. Whitley had lived in Dayton for over 50 after moving from Vinton, Louisiana. She was a member of the Order of Easter Star for 50 years, enjoyed her family, cooking, reading & the home shopping networks.

Services for Mrs. Whitley will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 13, 2011 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Day officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Saturday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.

Mrs. Whitley was preceded in death by her parents; her husband: Neil Whitley; infant sons: Darrell and Jerrell Whitley; son: Dean Whitley; brother: M.J. Breaux and sister: Nell Martin.

She is survived by granddaughters: Amy Scott and Mendy Johnson of Liberty; grandson: Justin Linton of Moss Hill; special friend: Jane Platt of Baytown; great-grandchildren: Emiley, Samantha and Joshua Scott, Erynne and Tyler Johnson, and Laurel Litton; nieces: Kathy, Cheryl, & Karen all of Louisiana; also numerous other relatives and friends.

Whitten

Viola Marie Whitten, age 92, died Wednesday, February 9, 2011 in Kingwood.

She was born in Houston, February 4, 1919 the daughter of the late Otto Puls and Katherine Balcerowich Puls. A homemaker, Viola also was a devoted member to her church, First Baptist Church of Liberty.

She was preceded in death by her husband Hebert Reed Whitten Sr. and a son Hebert Reed Whitten Jr.

She leaves behind a daughter Patricia Ann Lyle of Lebanon, TN, sister Dorothy Hatton of Houston, grandchildren, Clinton Lyle, Clayton Lyle, Adam Murphy, and Phillip Murphy, as well as her great grandchildren, Ashley, Tyler and Adam Murphy Jr. In addition she leaves many lifelong friends and relatives to cherish her memory.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, February 12, 2011 at ten o’clock in the morning at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Street Houston, TX 77023.

Carmichael

Dora Ada “Hickie” Neuman Carmichael, 87, of Dayton, died Tuesday, February 8, 2011 in Baytown after a lengthy illness.

She was born December 14, 1923 in Romayor, Texas to parents, Eric Brighteyes “Lett” Neuman, Sr. and Ada Gertrude Hooper Neuman. Mrs. Carmichael was a member of the Dayton High School Class of 1940. She returned to Dayton in 1994 after living in Kountze. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and enjoyed knitting, African violets, walking, the outdoors, playing forty-two and watching the Houston Rockets and Astros.

Services for Mrs. Carmichael will be 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 12, 2011 at First Baptist Church of Dayton with Rev. Randy Piatt officiating. Interment will follow at Linney cemetery in Dayton. The family will receive friends on Friday evening, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Mrs. Carmichael was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, James P. Carmichael; daughter, Cynthia A. “Cindy” Carmichael; son, Hugh P. “Lukey” Carmichael; brothers, Jesse Eric Neuman and Gene Bert Neuman, and sister, Louise Neuman. She is survived by her brothers: E.B. Neuman, Jr. and wife Shirley of Dayton, Franky Neuman and wife Margaret of Morgan, Larry Neuman and wife Ilene of Dayton, Mutt Neuman and wife Judy of Dayton, and special friends, David T. “Boo” Watson and wife Jana and family of Nacogdoches, also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. & Mrs. George Childress

Funeral Services for Mrs. Lena Mae Childress, 81, and her husband Mr. George P. Childress, 89, of Raywood will be held on Friday, February 11, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at St Miles Missionary Baptist Church, Ames, TX, with the Reverend Dr. Michael Landry, officiating, with burial in Johnson cemetery, Liberty under the direction of Wells Funeral Services, Liberty.

On September 13, 1944 George and Lena exchanged vows, and begin their life together in Raywood, TX. George worked with the railroad and did construction work while Lena took care of husband and home. George later worked at the Rice Dryer in Devers. After the birth of their nine children George became self-employed and Lena attended Lee College earning her nursing license. She started her career as a home health nurse/provider with the community and went on to build a lifelong career as a nurse at the Yettie Kersting Hospital in Liberty, TX.

Mrs. Childress died at her residence on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 and her husband, George, passed away two days later on Friday, February, 4, 2011 at Methodist Hospital Houston.

Visitation will be held at the church from 11:00 am until time of service.

They were preceded in death by two sons: Stanley Al and Arthur Jay Childress; one grandson: Quincy Dorsett Childress and one granddaughter; Natalie Cole Childress.

The couple leaves to cherish their memory three sons: Donald Ray Childress of Ames, Texas, Jesse Carl Childress, also of Ames and George Larry Childress of Raywood, TX.; four daughters: Holly Amanda Brooks of Ames, Arletha Mae Childress of Baytown, Dana Evett Childress of Houston, and Tanya Moniek Childress of Ames. Mr. Childress also leaves one brother: Alvin P. Childress of Orange and one sister Birtha Durio, of Dayton; twenty five grandchildren and thirty three great-grandchildren

Robinson

Funeral Service for Kenneth Robinson, 58, of Liberty, will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Miles Missionary Baptist Church, Ames, TX with the Reverend L. C. Speights, officiating with burial in Wells Memorial cemetery, Liberty under the direction of Wells Funeral Service, Liberty.

He died on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at Baptist Hospital in Beaumont.

Kenneth was born February 7, 1952 to Mrs. Etta (Hill) Fontenot. He graduated Liberty High School and attended Lee College. Kenneth then joined the Marine Corp.

Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 am until time of service. He leaves to cherish his memory two sons: Erick Roy and Shawn Robinson; four daughters: Monique Bush of Liberty, Tracy Williams of Houston, Kenneta Williams also of Houston, and Cherish Robinson of Liberty; two brothers; Isaac Fontenot, of Dallas, TX, and Delvert Fontenot of Garland, TX.; two sisters: Georgia Gonzales, Ida Lee Fontenot. He also leaves six grandchildren.

Starling

Marianne Ursula Starling, 71, of Liberty, died at her home on Tuesday, February 8, 2011, surrounded by her family.

A visitation will be held on Friday, February 11, 2011 from 10AM until 11AM at Allison Funeral Service Chapel. Funeral services will follow at 11:00am at the funeral home with burial to be private.

Marianne was born December 1, 1939 in Danzig, Poland to parents Hans Siegismund Musall and Ilse Damm Nabitz. She came to the United States in 1972 and has lived in Liberty for the last seven years. Marianne was a registered nurse. She had worked in Germany with the Red Cross and later was employed by San Jacinto Hospital in Baytown. She was a talker, she loved to knit and loved the Opera. Mrs. Starling spoke four languages.

Mrs. Starling was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Calvin Starling Jr.

She is survived by two daughters, Angela Parks and Arvell Starling, two sons, J. Jerard Starling and Richard Damm, one sister, Ursula Tubbs, one brother, Manfred Werner, five grandchildren, Brandon Rumsey, Ryan Rumsey, Taylor Starling, Jaime Starling and Jay Starling and numerous other extended family members and friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis St., Liberty, Texas.

Kersh

Jesse Leo Kersh, 79, born August 1931 in Manning, Texas, died on Monday, February 7, 2011.

After retiring from JSC, Jesse and his wife, Iva Mae, spent time Traveling the US in their travel trailer with frequent stops in Mountain View, Arkansas and South Padre Island, Texas. He recently completed the Master Gardner Program of Galveston County and was an avid Mall Walker. Jesse graduated in 1949 from Liberty TX High School, served aboard the USS Rowan (early 1950’s) and received a Masters from Sam Houston State University.

He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Iva Mae Kersh; children, Regina Kay Minton and spouse, Jessie “Dean” Kersh and spouse; grandchildren, Christopher Blake Bennett, Caitlin Brittany Bennett, John Thomas Minton IV; and great grandson, Caleb Blake Bennett.

His family will receive friends at Sterling Funeral Home of Dayton on Wednesday February 9, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday February 10, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. at Sterling Funeral Home of Dayton. Burial will follow at Palms cemetery.

Schwabe

Jewell Iris Norris Schwabe, 91, of Dayton, died Saturday, February 5, 2011 at home after a lengthy illness.

She was born September 18, 1919 in Liberty, Texas to parents, Thomas Hugh Norris and Lucy Hard Norris. She was a lifelong resident of Liberty County where she worked at Walkers, Rainbow Cafe and in Dayton as a switcher for Union Pacific Railroad. Mrs. Schwabe enjoyed reading the bible, crocheting, knitting, gardening and most of all being with her family.

Services for Mrs. Schwabe will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Herman Moor officiating. Interment will follow at Palms Memorial Park cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Dayton. Visitation will be Monday evening 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Pace-Stancil.

Mrs. Schwabe was preceded in death by her parents and her husband of twenty-five years, Edward Emile Schwabe. She is survived by her daughter: Evelyn George and husband Don of Dayton; her son: Charles Leon Graham of Dayton; grandchildren: Robert Croft and wife Jennifer of Huntsville, Iris Wedgeworth and husband Jamie of Hallsville, Joy Anderson and husband Lonnie of Dayton; great grandchildren: Lindsey Croft, Norah and Ethan Wedgeworth, Andrew and Kelsey Anders; sister: Alice Leggett of San Antonio; sister-in-law: Opal Norris of Liberty; also numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

GEORGE AND LENA CHILDRESS

Funeral Services are still pending for Mrs. Lena Childress, 81, of Raywood, who died at her residence on Wednesday, Feb 2, 2011. Her husband, George Childress, 89 died at Memorial Hospital on Friday, Feb 4, 2011. The couple had been married 67 years.

ROBINSON

Services are pending for Kenneth Robinson, 58, of Liberty.

He died at Baptist Hospital Beaumont on Friday, February 5, 2011.

Freeman

Preston Keith Freeman, 55, of Devers, died Wednesday February 2, 2011 at Fairy’s Landing Nursing Center of Hull.

Born in Beaumont Texas to Otis Theodore Freeman and Betty Idell Andress he had lived in Devers most of his life and had worked as a maintenance worker for Dransco of Devers. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Devers.

Preston is survived by his brothers Alan Freeman and wife Charlene of Sour Lake, Daryl Freeman of Devers, Kevin Freeman of Ft. Lauderdale Florida. Sisters Barbara Carter and husband David of Devers, and Joy Rayon and husband William of Devers, and numerous nieces nephews and friends.

A service of remembrance will be held Sunday February 6, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church of Devers with Reverend Harry McDaniel officiating.

The family will be receiving friends on Saturday February 5, 2011 from 5:00 P.M. until 9:00 P.M. also at the First Baptist Church of Devers. Interment will follow at the Stacy cemetery in Devers.
