Paxton

Etta V. Paxton, 79, of Hardin, died late on Tuesday, April 27, 2010. She was born on July 22, 1930 to Bonnie Dee (Singleton) and A. J. Hopson in Onalaska, Texas.

At age 16, Etta married Billy, who was 18, and lived together as husband and wife for the next 54 years until his death.

She worked as a cook and ‘deck hand’ on his shrimp boat for 13 years, becoming quite proficient with a culling rake. Etta would always refer to her Billy as “Mr. Boatman”.

She was a talker, certainly never met a stranger, and loved people so much that she made friends quite easily. One time, she, and husband, Billy, stood in line at Luby’s talking to another couple, and after dinner they went to their new friends’ home for dessert! After a cruise to Alaska she met some folks in Michigan and they became lifelong friends and visited each other in their perspective home states.

Etta had a servant’s heart, wanting to help people, and was quite the prayer warrior ~ always having a burdened heart for others in need. Her great love for sewing and quilting caused her to have a quilting ministry, as she made numerous quilts over the years for various friends and family members.

Making everything from scratch, some of Etta’s specialties included shrimp gumbo, fried chicken and chicken ‘n dumplings.

She also cooked vegetables from her garden. Everyone else’s cooking got measured by her standard of cooking.

Etta had the inability to bake only one pie, it would be more like six or seven at a time. The same went for yeast rolls ~ never only two dozen, but many dozen. One year Etta just had to have a veggi-matic for Christmas she’d seen advertised and thought she just couldn’t live without. Well, after Billy got it for her she didn’t much care for it, used it only twice and put it back in the box. Billy was bound and determined that money was not going to waste; she was going to use it. So for the next five or six Christmases he got creative with re-gifting it to her under the tree. He may have even been the one to invent re-gifting! In addition to their fun-loving relationship, Etta and Billy used to sing beautiful duets at church. She was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Daisetta.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and husband, Billy Harlow Paxton.

Left behind to cherish her memory are daughters, Janice Shipman and husband, Melvin, of Hardin, and Linda Boone and husband, Carter of Sugar Land; brother, Clifford Hopson and wife, Sandra; grandchildren, Kelvin Shipman, Kasey Shipman and wife, Justina, Jenny Heidrick and husband, Travis, Ashley Boone and Heather Venable; many nieces and nephews; and a loving church family.

Visitation with family and friends will be 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, April 30, 2010. Services will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 1, 2010 with the Rev. Lonnie Jordan officiating and burial following at Moss Hill cemetery. Both visitation and service will be at United Pentecostal Church, 505 Utah St., Daisetta, Texas.

Pallbearers are Bruce Alberson, Chad Ferguson, Jeff Frautschi, Aaron Henson, Jacob Nash and Joe Roach.
