Smith

Funeral service for Gussiew Mae Smith, 74, of Liberty, Texas, will be held Monday, June 29, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Liberty with the Rev. Edwin Hardy officiating with burial in Wells Memorial cemetery.

A native of Liberty, she attended pubic school at Liberty Training High School and worked as a florist most of her life.

She died Thursday, June 25, 2009 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Baytown.

Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 A.M. until time of service.

She is survived by two children: Wanda Smith of Los Angeles, California and Eric Smith of St. Joseph, Missouri; one sister: Dorothy Alexander; two brothers: Samuel Smith and Arthur Smith, all of Liberty; three grandchildren; one great grandchild, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Riggs

N.J. “Jim” Riggs, of Liberty, Texas, died on June 26, 2009 at Liberty-Dayton Community Hospital with his wife Naomi, by his side.

Jim was born in Goliad, Texas on December 15, 1922. He graduated from Goliad High School and attended Victoria Junior College. Jim married Naomi Cofer of Ninnekah, Oklahoma, on June 8, 1946. He was employed by Stanliand Oil Company where he worked as a surveyor. He also worked for American Rice Growers in Dayton for more than 25 years, retiring in 1985.

He loved to work in his garden, even in his later years. He loved being outside and always desired to be active. The only time he preferred to be inside was when watching “The Price Is Right” or listening to the Saturday morning news on the radio.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents John Wesley Riggs and Anna Gertrude Goilminot Riggs, his brothers Calvin Riggs and C.L. Riggs and his sisters Jessie Lee Riggs Urban and Ella G. Riggs Finn.

Jim is survived by his wife Naomi Riggs of 63 years, son Ronald “Ronnie” Riggs and wife Lilia of Liberty, a brother June L. Rigggs and wife Aurora of Goliad, Texas, two grandchildren, Christopher Riggs and wife Kathy of Wylie, Texas and Dustin Riggs of Longview, Texas. He is also survived by three step-grandchildren Tony Vidal and wife Anna of Flint, Texas, Carlos Vidal and wife Heather of Kent, Washington, and Blanca L. Vidal and husband Reuben of Honduras, seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday June 28, 2009 from 5-8pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas. A graveside service will be held 10:30AM Monday at Cooke Memorial Park with Rev. Ron Davis officiating.

Parks

Sarah Jean Sheffield Parks, 28, of Moscow, ID, died June 24, 2009, at her residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Dayton. Interment will be held at a later date at the Rosewood cemetery in Humble. Family members will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Sarah was born July 8, 1980 in Houston to parents; Russell C. Sheffield and Laura Campbell Sheffield, a former resident of Dayton, and has resided in Moscow, ID for the past four years. She was a graduate of the Dayton High School class of 1998 and Stephen F. Austin University class of 2002, a teacher for the Moscow Charter Schools third grade, and former instructor for the Galena Park ISD and St. Cyprians Episcopal School in Lufkin. Through her faith, she took great pride in her campus ministries at Stephen F. Austin and the University of Idaho in Chi Alpha for the past 12 years. She also enjoyed reading, shopping, watching football games, and playing tennis.

Mrs. Parks was preceded in death by her father: Russell C. Sheffield and grandparents: Clyde and Jean Sheffield, Margaret Chance Graham and husband Gene, and Robert Campbell. She is survived by her husband: Silas Parks of Moscow, ID, mother: Laura Sheffield Allen and husband Michael of Mexia, AL, sister: Chrissy Sheffield Davidson and husband Bobby of Dayton, step-sister: Laura Allen Menard and husband C. J. of NE, step-brother: Josh Allen of Atascocita, and numerous aunts, uncles, other relatives, and friends.

In lieu of usual floral remembrances, the family requests that donations be made to the Sarah J. Sheffield Parks Scholarship Fund at the Prosperity Bank, 106 N. Main, Dayton, Texas 77535.

Pickett

Benjamin Lawrence Pickett, infant son of Russell and Kimberly (Joiner) Pickett, died June 25, 2009 in Houston.

Benjamin was born June 5, 2009 in Woodlands.

A funeral service will be held 2 P.M. Saturday, June 27, 2009 at the Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas.

Benjamin was preceded in death by his paternal great-grandparents, Ben Pickett and Richard Lawrence, his maternal great-grandparents, Alton Simmons and Harvey Joiner Sr. He leaves behind his parents, Russell and Kimberly Pickett; sister, Victoria Pickett; paternal grandparents, Ellis Pickett and his wife Deborah, and Martha Pickett, maternal grandparents, Harvey Joiner Jr. and his wife Donna, Paternal Great-Grandmothers, Ellen Pickett and Elane Lawrence, Maternal Great-Grandmothers, Doris Simmons Snyder and Joyce Joiner, Aunt Amy Lynn Hoffman and her husband Tom, Uncle Keith Joiner and his wife Brandy, as well as his five cousins.

Hasson

A celebration of the life of Lera B. Hasson, 93, of Liberty, will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2009 at 11:00 a.m.

Lera died and went to join her loved ones on Tuesday, June 23, 2009.

Lera entered this world on September 5, 1915 in Bronson, TX. She was the daughter of Horace and Addie Forse. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband of 45 years, Harold Hasson, brothers, O’Neal Forse and R. V. Forse.

She is survived by daughter, Patricia Hasson of Liberty, granddaughter, Susie Bradford Frazier and husband Clarence of Liberty, and grandson, Brack Cotten and wife Sheri of Lufkin. Great- Grandchildren include: Jennifer Regen Strawn and husband Tommy of Liberty, Seth, Haley and Ashley Cotten of Lufkin, Zachary and Nathan Frazier of Kentucky, great-great-granddaughters are Morgan and Brittany Webb of Liberty. Lera also leaves behind a host of family and close friends.

A visitation for family and friends will from five until eight o’clock in the evening Monday, June 29th at Allison Funeral Service. A service of remembrance will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning on Tuesday, June 30th at Allison Funeral Service with interment to follow in Fairlawn cemetery. Final arrangements for Lera have been entrusted to Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N Travis, Liberty, Texas 77575.

Hall

Mildred “Millie” Hall, 76, of Channelview, Texas, died Thursday, June 25, 2009.

She was born on September 26, 1932 to James Franklin and Annie Jane (Wells) Holmes in Daisetta, Texas. Millie was known for her dumplings and homemade coconut cake. She was a member of the Crosby Chapter #261 Eastern Star.

Millie is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bill and Raymond Holmes; sisters, Myrl Reese and Bobbie Reavis; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Willie and D.M. Tomerlin. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Arnold Hall; daughters, Laura Lowry and husband Steve of Baytown and Mary Martin and husband Brice of Kemah; brother, A.J. Holmes and wife Francis of Winnie; sister-in-law, Janice Holmes; brother-in-law, Elbert Reavis; granddaughters, Amy Payne and husband Michael, Janis Drake, and Sarah Drake; great-granddaughter, Zoe Payne; caregiver, Akira Williams; and numerous more nieces, nephews and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be from six until eight o’clock in the evening on Friday, June 26th at Allison Funeral Service. A service of remembrance will be held at ten o’clock in the morning on Saturday, June 27th at Allison Funeral Service with interment to follow in Guedry cemetery.

Final arrangements for Millie have been entrusted to Allison Funeral Service 1101 N Travis St Liberty, Texas 77575.

DeSpain

Sarah K. Havard DeSpain, 90, of Gainesville, MO, died Monday, June 22, 2009, in Mountain Home, AR.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, at the Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Sarah was born January 8, 1919 in Cleveland, to parents; Willis S. and Mary M. Cole Havard, a former member of Rural Shade Baptist Church, and was a retired nurse.

Mrs. DeSpain was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Quanah DeSpain, and grandson: Michael David Aaron. She is survived by her sons: Joe Aaron and wife Barbara, Mike Aaron and wife Inez, Curtis DeSpain and wife Neva, and Ronnie DeSpain and wife Carol, grandchildren: Robert Aaron, Dwayne Aaron, Chuck Perry, Jesse DeSpain, Cody DeSpain, and Dewayne Walley, great-grandchildren: Brandy Aaron, Amber Aaron, Ashley Aaron, Emily Aaron, Connor Aaron, Chandler Hansen, Brittney Walley, Stephen Walley, Tyler Walley, Lane Walley, Corbin Brock Chandler, Dayton Wayne DeSpain, and Weston Marshall DeSpain, great great-grandchild: Madison Marie Hall, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Moulder

Nora Ann Moulder, 51, of Romayor, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at her residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the First Baptist Church of Romayor with burial following at the Romayor cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Cleveland.

Nora was born November 17, 1957 in Cleveland, to parents; Jacquline Allen-Moulder and Lawrence Kenneth Sr.

She is preceded in death by her grandparents, Claude and Ruby Allen, Emmett and Roxie Moulder; uncles, Bill, James, and McClelland; and her aunts, Donna, Jean, and Ellen. Survivors include both parents, Kenneth and Jackie Moulder; brothers, L. Kenneth Moulder Jr. and Braidy Allen Moulder; nephews, Garrett Moulder, Kevin Moulder; nieces, Hannah Elizabet Moulder; numerous other loving and caring family members and treasured friends.

Pierce

Russell Eugene Pierce, 54, died on Monday, June 22, 2009.

He was born to Russell and Myrtle Pierce on Aug. 7, 1954, in Cleveland, TX. He was a graduate of the University of Houston Police Academy, had more than 22 years of law enforcement experience and on Nov. 4, 2008, the people of Liberty County presented him with one of the greatest honors and dreams of his life by electing him to serve as Constable over Liberty County, Precinct Two. He also served his community as a member of the Baytown Shrine Club and he was also a Master Mason in good standing of Anahuac Lodge No. 995.

Russell is preceded in death by his loving parents, Russell and Myrtle Pierce, precious daughter, Krystle Marie Pierce and brother and friend, Billy Pierce.

He is survived by his wife, Donna Tillman; daughter, Leslie Favors and husband Justin and grandson Jackson; son, Jake and mother-in-law, Joy Tillman; sister, Shirley Peterson and husband E.J.; sister, Joann Slate and husband Harry; sister, Brenda Allen and husband Larry and numerous nephews, nieces and extended family and friends. He will be greatly missed by all, however, comfort can be found in knowing that he is united with the Lord our God and his many loved ones and friends that have gone home before him.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, June 24, 2009, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Earthman Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at 10 a.m., at Second Baptist Church, 500 East James Street; Baytown, TX., with Pastor Tommy Clements officiating. Burial will follow at Brookside Memorial Park, 13401 Eastex Fwy.; Houston, TX.

Serving as pallbearers will be Harry Slate, Howard Bruton, Andy Allen, Jay Dee Allen, Melvin Pierce and George Gonzales. Honorary pallbearers will be EJ Peterson and Larry Allen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Baptist Church of Baytown.

Kellum-Lee

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Alenia Kellum-Lee, 81, of Houston, Texas, on Saturday, June 27, 2009, at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, Ames, Texas at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend Father Ikeokwu Nduh, M.S.P, celebrant, with burial in Wells Memorial cemetery.

A native of Liberty, she attended public school at Liberty Training High School. A member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, Ames, she was a member of the Ladies of Auxiliary Court #33 of St. Peter Claver.

She died Monday, June 22, 2009 at her residence in Houston, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 A.M. until time of service at the church.

She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Godfrey

Funeral Services will be held for Katie Mayes Godfrey, 72, of Wallisville, Texas, on Thursday, June 25, 2009, at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Wallisville, Texas at 11:00 A.M. with the Reverend Dairs Thomas, officiating, with burial in Toran cemetery, Wallisville.

A native of Double Bayou, she was a housewife and a graduate of George Washington Carver High School in Anahuac.

She died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont after an illness.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence Godfrey, one son: Lawrence Godfrey of Wallisville; three daughters: Barbara Rivon of Baytown, Sharon Godfrey and Bridgette Godfrey, both of Wallisville; one brother: Gordon Cooper of Houston; three sisters; Shirley Taylor of Columbus, Georgia, Jo Ann Cooper of Anahuac and Johnnie McCollough of Wallisville and a host of other relatives and friends.

Brock

Frances C. Spraker Brock, 71, of Dayton, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 25, 2009, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Ryan cemetery in Tarkington Prairie. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Frances was born November 19, 1937 in Simmons Bottom, Texas to parents; John Ray and Elmira E. Gillen Spraker, and has resided in the Dayton area throughout her life. She was a retired nurse’s aide for the Dayton Hospital, member of the Simmons Bottom Assembly of God, former member of the Kenefick Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, fishing, cooking, camping & spending time with her family & friends

Mrs. Brock was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Lenard Brock, Jr., daughter: Melinda Kay Brock, and granddaughter: Machelle Rayburn. She is survived by her daughters: Marla Burch and husband Shelton of Liberty and Melissa Brock of Dayton, sons: Jason Brock and companion Dana of Dayton, Tryson Brock and wife Angie of Kenefick, and Ladd Brock and wife Carrie of Dayton, sisters: Earline Hudgins of Crockett and Loretta Votaw and husband Clyde of Katy, 15 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one great great-grandchild on the way, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Griffin

Mary T. Griffin, age 81, died Sunday June 21, 2009 in Silsbee, Texas.

She was born in Cedar Bayou, Texas, December 24, 1927 the daughter of the late Frank Otto Teten and Bessie Jane Ayhart Teten. Mary enjoyed to hunt, fish and ride four wheelers.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Bert Teten, Earl Teten, Harry Teten, and Lee Teten.

She leaves behind her beloved husband of 61 years George Clifford Griffin, sons Bert Griffin and his wife Linda of Kountze, Calvin Griffin and his wife Darla of Sour Lake, daughter Connie McMillan and her husband Rocky of Tyler, sisters Gladys Glass of Anahuac, Grace Schick of Baytown and Florence Cummings and her husband John of Highlands. Mary also leaves her four devoted grandchildren, Kevin Griffin, Brent Griffin, Amanda Griffin and Rene McMillan.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-8pm at Allison Funeral Service 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas. A graveside service will be held 10AM Wednesday at Guedry cemetery, Batson.
