Rives

Ernest Taylor “Fuzz” Rives, 78, died Friday April 3, 2009 at Liberty Dayton Hospital.

He was born in Hardin, Texas November 4, 1930 the son of the late Samuel P. Rives and Mary Lou Bush Rives. Ernest worked in the oilfields for many years, last working as a consultant. He enjoyed farming, fishing, and loved to cook, he was best known for his cakes, pies, and barbecue.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Gary Rives, a grandson Bobby Joe Rives, a great grandson Ryan Rives, brothers, Tommy, Samuel, J.P., and George Rives as well as a sister Lou Ellen Hinklin.

He leaves behind his wife of fifty-seven years, his beloved Mollie Rives, his children, Joyce Deajon and husband Lee of Crosby, Larry Rives and his wife Vicky of Hardin, Dollie Williams of Albuquerque, NM, Jerry Rives and his wife Janita of Hardin, and Ernest Rives and his wife Jana of Hardin. His brothers Benjamin Rives of Oregon, Reginald Rives of Florida, and Albert “Bo” Rives of Orange, sisters, Erma Koch and Mittie Acklin both of Kerbyville. In addition he leaves sixteen grandchildren, twenty-four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Visitation will be held Monday April 6, 2009 from 5-8pm at Allison Funeral Service 1101 N. Travis, Liberty, Texas.

A Celebration of Life service will be held 11AM Tuesday, April 7, 2009 at the funeral home.

Elliott

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held for Alice “Dot” Elliott, 70, of Raywood, Texas, on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at 12:00 noon, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Raywood with the Reverend Father George Okeahialam, M.S.P. as celebrant with burial at Sacred Heart Catholic cemetery.

A native of Morganza, Louisiana she died April 2, 2009 at her residence.

She was a graduate of Woodson High School in Raywood; she went on to become a nurse. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish Council, Ladies Auxiliary of St. Peter Claver Court #83, and School Board Trustee of Hull-Daisetta Independent School District.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, 9:00 A.M. until time of service.

She is survived by her husband; Richard Elliott of Raywood, one son: Richard Troy Elliott of Raywood; two daughters: Mona Lisa Simon also of Raywood, and Tony K Lewis of Baytown; three brothers: Leroy Ruffin, Will Ruffin, Jr., and William Ruffin all of Houston; two sisters: Elizabeth “Sadie” Freeman Vinson of Liberty, and Jo Ann Trahan of Raywood; five grandchildren and two great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Munger

Theresa Emma Strobel Munger, 93, died peacefully at her home on April 1, 2009 after an extended illness.

Ms. Munger was born in Albany, LA, on May 8, 1915 to Rudolph and Emma Maklary Strobel.

The eldest of eight children, Theresa and her family moved to Texas in the mid-1920s, eventually residing in Highlands, Texas.

An excellent student-athlete, Ms. Munger graduated as valedictorian of Crosby High School Class of 1934 and also won the school tennis championship.

Dedicated to her family throughout her life, Theresa turned down a scholarship offer to Southern Methodist University in order to work and help finance her younger siblings though school. She remained in the Houston area, graduated from Draughn’s Business School in 1935 and worked in Houston as a secretary for several years. In 1940, she married George N. Munger and together they shared 61 years until his death in 2002. She would often accompany George as they sold fruits and vegetables from their farm throughout the Liberty and Chambers County areas. Ms. Munger was the original secretary for the Chambers County Heath Department when founded in 1965. Theresa was a loyal and tireless worker in her community. She taught Sunday school for more than 20 years, as well as volunteering to assist at all of her children's schools.

She will also be remembered for serving her community as Election Judge for Wallisville, Texas for numerous years as well as serving as a census taker, her service as program director of AARP, as secretary-treasurer of the Wallisville Music Association and many other community functions. Ms. Munger was an excellent cook whose fried chicken, peanut rolls, chicken and dumplings, and popovers will never be forgotten. In addition, Theresa was a creative seamstress, crocheter, and gardener and always gave of herself to others. Her lifelong passion for dancing and games was well known to many, and she regularly hosted domino parties that were always memorable.

She was predeceased by her parents, her husband George of 61 years, her son Bill Munger Turner, her daughter Patsy Ruth Hogg, her sisters Priscilla Anderson and Jean McCoy, and her brothers Rudy Strobel and Alex Strobel. She is survived by her bothers Louis Strobel and wife, Jane; Robert Strobel and wife, Helen, as well as her sister Mary Ann Dale, and her close cousin Bill Nagy, and his wife Jo, her brother-in-law E.H. Munger, and her sister-in-law Ina Welch. Her children Charlotte and husband, Rick McCalla; and son Bob and wife, Rosemary Munger also survive her.

Theresa had nine grandchildren who were the joy of her life: Jayson, Suzanne, Allen, Tony, David, James, Bryan, Robert and Christie. Additionally, she was blessed with 14 great grandchildren; one great, great, granddaughter; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Theresa is also survived by her longtime caretaker and special friend, Cheryl Rogers and caretakers, Celina Armstrong, Barbara Simon and Marilyn Bilyer who all made it possible for her to continue living at home throughout her illness.

Funeral Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on April 7, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Anahuac, Texas, with interment to follow at the Sherman cemetery on Lake Charlotte Road.

Visitation is scheduled for Monday, April 6, 2009 from 4:00-8:00 at Sterling Funeral Home, Anahuac, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to First United Methodist Church, Anahuac, Texas, or a charity of your choice.

Services are under the direction of Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main St., Anahuac, Texas.

Joseph

There is a new star in Heaven. It’s name is Lee Joseph, Jr.

God looked down and knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw the road was too rough, the hills were too hard to climb so He closed your weary eyes and whispered “Peace Be Thine”.

Lee passed away at home on April 3, 2009, with his parents by his side, under Lighthouse Hospice care. He is free to run and jump and sing and dance with all the limitations of his head injury lifted away. Lee lived his life with great courage, great strength and lots of humor. He will be missed and loved by his family forever.

Lee was born on March 2, 1962, in Bloomington, Indiana, but would be quick to tell you he was a Texan. He is survived by his parents, Lee Neil and Carolyn Harmon Joseph of Spring, Texas; his brother David Joseph, and son Tyler, of Houston, Texas; his brother Terry Joseph and wife Lura and their children, Blaine, Lura and Charlie of Spring, Texas. He is also survived by his grandmother Bertie Harmon of Mont Belvieu, Texas and his Aunt Sunnie Harmon, Uncle Charles Harmon, and wife Shirley, of Mont Belvieu; and Uncle Butch Joseph and wife, Ellen, of Cove, Texas. Numerous other relatives survive.

The service will be held on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, at 1:30PM at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas with Rev. Dave Muntsinger, of Spring Cypress Presbyterian Church in Spring, Texas presiding.

A visitation will be on Monday, April 6, 2009 from 5pm until 8 pm. at Sterling Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Palms Memorial Park cemetery in Dayton, Texas.

Hill

David Allen Hill, 53, of Liberty, died Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at home after an extended illness.

He was born May 16, 1955 in Biloxi, Mississippi, to parents William M. and Doris Jean Ables Hill. He had lived in Liberty for the past year, previously of Dayton and had been employed by Vertek Energy in Baytown. Mr. Hill enjoyed hunting, motorcycles, and golf.

Services for Mr. Hill will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 4, 2009 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Magnolia Park cemetery.

He was preceded in death by his father: William M. Hill and his mother: Doris Jean Ables Trawick. He is survived by his wife Melinda Gay Hill of Liberty; his daughters: Sandra G. Moore of Liberty, Sumer R. Hill of Liberty, and Tamra N. Birdwell of Sugarland; grandchild: Riley A. Hill; his sons: Troy E. Birdwell of Liberty, and Thomas J. Birdwell of Liberty; brothers: William “Bill” Hill of Virginia and William “Chuck” Hill of Dayton; sisters: Janis Hill of Liberty and Cindy Guerrero of Alvin; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Wheeler

Steven Michael Wheeler, Beloved Husband, Father, Son and Brother died Monday March 30, 2009. Born in Louisiana and raised in Cleveland, Texas known to everyone that loved him as a very sharing and caring person. Through his life he always set his first priority to care for the needs of others and his family. “Steve” or “Chief” or “Dad” it made no difference what you called him he was always there. With his grin and an arm around you or a handshake he loved everyone.

In the early 70’s he joined the Cleveland Fire Department as a Volunteer Firefighter and continued to dedicated his time and service till this date. Rising from Volunteer Firefighter to Chief of the Cleveland Fire Dept. Steve also served as Director of Emergency Management representing Liberty County for the Cleveland area. In his many years of service Steve served the community of Cleveland in many different areas of responsibilities. These many roles included Fire Chief, EMS Director, Fire Marshall, Arson Investigator, Director of Emergency Services and any other job the Mayor or City Manager needed filled that week. Steve had a great love for the Cleveland Community and Liberty County and shown this through his many acts of courage and commitment he gave. Especially during the devastation of Hurricane Rita and Katrina he spent countless hours without sleep seeing that everyone had shelter and food to eat. It is hard to express the sadness that we all feel at this time with his lost.

Steve is survived by his wife of 26 years Angie and three loving daughters, Tiffany, Camille and Nicole wife of Michael Dickerson and their son Brett of Tarkington Prairie; Parents: Ed and Bernice Wheeler of Cleveland, Father and Mother-in-Law: Dewey Thomas Peluso And Evelyn Mary Peluso; Sisters, Mary and husband Glen Morris of Crosby, Texas, Dorothy and husband Don Thomas of Houston; Brothers: Thom Wheeler of Taos, New Mexico, Jack Wheeler Sr. and wife Laryssa of Kingfisher Oklahoma, Robert Wheeler and Bunny of Houston, TX, Ron Wheeler and wife Jeanne of Flower Mound, TX; Nieces and Nephews, Monty Wheeler, Jack Wheeler Jr., Kris Wheeler, Donald Thomas, Scott Morris, Lori Sennebogen, Danielle Hurnt, Janet Morris, Aaren Wheeler, Bailey Wheeler.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 2, 2009, 11:00 a.m., Cornerstone Church, 27453 Hwy. 105 W, Cleveland, Texas with interment at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens, Cleveland, Texas.

In lieu of Flowers the Family asks that donations be made to Cleveland Fire-Rescue In care of the Cleveland Fire Department.

Fregia

E. B. Fregia 86, of Hull, died Tuesday March 31, 2009 at his residence. Born in Village Mills, E.B had lived in Hull most of his life and was a retired Tool Pusher for Oil Well Production and also a U.S. Army Veteran.

Survivors are his wife; of 65 years Nellie Fregia of Hull, Sons; Reverend Paul Fregia and wife Rita of Vidor, Kenneth Fregia Sr and wife Marsha of Daisetta, Raymond Fregia and wife Myrtle of Hull. Grandchildren; seven, Great grandchildren; sixteen.

A service of remembrance was held Friday April 3, 2009 at 10:00A.M. At Central Baptist Church of Daisetta, with Reverend Jimmy VanDorn and Reverend Paul Fregia officiating interment followed at Guedry cemetery in Batson. The family received friends Thursday April 2, 2009 from 6:00 P.M. Until 9:00 P.M. also at the church.

Overton

Eunice “Granny” Faye Overton – age 81 of Liberty died Tuesday March 31, 2009 in Liberty.

She was born in Tomball, TX, June 10, 1927 the daughter of the late James Allen Oliver and Annie Snooks Oliver. Granny was a homemaker, and a member of the Liberty Church of Christ. She enjoyed crocheting, her country magazine, and cooking. She loved her 3pm coffee group and was devoted to her church and her family. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Besides her parents she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Neil Overton, and her brothers George, Ray and James E. Oliver. She leaves behind her three children, Sandra Werchan and her husband Larry of Navasota, Larry Overton and his wife Geri of Humble, and Cathy Stifflemire and her husband Joe Edd of Liberty. Her sister, Billie Creel of Hardin and a brother Grank Oliver of Lumberton. In addition she left behind her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5-8pm at Allison Funeral Service, 1101 N. Travis Liberty, Texas, A graveside service will be held 2pm Thursday at Cooke Memorial cemetery, Liberty, Texas.

Jones

Elaine C. Carter Jones, 79, of Dayton, died Tuesday, March 31, 2009 in Baytown, after an extended illness.

Mrs. Jones was born March 17, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois to parents: Dallas and Lorraine “Jane” Gentry Carter. She had lived in Dayton since 1970 after moving from Indiana and had worked at the Dollar Store before retiring. Elaine was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and enjoyed singing in church and at the nursing home, also playing the piano and the guitar.

Graveside Service for Mrs. Jones will be 3:00 p.m., Friday, April 3, 2009 at Palms Memorial Park cemetery with Rev. Mike Blackburn officiating. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Thursday, April 2, 2009 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband: Harold E. Jones, eight brothers and sisters and is survived by her sons: Brian Jones of Dayton and Dale Jones and wife Melisa of Dayton; her granddaughters: Candace Haufe and Kelsey Jones; her great-granddaughter: Destiny Haufe; her sister: Verta Mae Schroder of Indiana; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held 4:00 p.m., Sunday, April 19, 2009 at the Trinity Baptist Church.

Smoke

Betty Diane Peeples Smoke, 62, of Hardin, died Sunday, March 29, 2009, at the St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton

Betty was born June 11, 1946 in Lake Village, AR, to parents; T. U. Peeples and Mallie E. Smith, a former resident of Greenville, MS, and has resided in the Hardin area for the past 29 years. She was a former bus driver for Hardin I.S.D., member of the Red Hat Society, and enjoyed flowers, watching birds, and crafts.

Mrs. Smoke was preceded in death by her father: T. U. Peeples and mother: Mallie Evelyn Smith Shephard. She is survived by her husband of 40 years: Billy Smoke of Hardin, sons: Todd Smoke and wife Suzanna of Hardin and Greg Smoke of Hardin, grandchildren: Chet Smoke, Logan McDaniel, Caleb McDaniel, Dalton Smoke, Brianna McDaniel, and Kellin Smoke, sister: Susie Oliver and husband Gil of Greenville, MS, nephew: Tom Oliver, niece: Deb Russell, and numerous other relatives, and friends.

Lewis

Jack Lewis, age 93, of Montgomery, Texas, died Saturday, March 28, 2009. He was born in Old Union, Texas on March 5, 1916 to John W. and Bessie Lewis who preceded him in death.

Visitation will be held Monday, March 30, 2009, 5:00-9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, 2009, Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas with interment at Morgan cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.

Survivors include his loving wife, Florida Lewis; son, Gibson Lewis and wife, Sandra; step-daughter, Sandra Sokoloski; grandchildren, Cammie Morvan, Cathy Martiniez, Gregory Burton, and Rodney Burton Jr.; great-grandchildren, Mackenzie Morvan, Megan Pulido, Drue Baker, Hunter Morvan, Rodney Burton, Britany Burton, Lori Johnson, Chase Burton, Ashley Burton, and David Burton; five great-great-grandchildren, brother, Billy Lewis and wife, Odessa; sister, Hazel Stanford and many other cherished family members and faithful friends beyond measure.

Bolton

Funeral Service will be held for Elizabeth Ann Bolton, 60, of Dayton, Texas, on Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at Wells Memorial Chapel, at 10:00 A.M. with the Reverend Jerry Hovater, officiating, with burial in Evergreen cemetery, Percilla, Texas.

A native of Palestine, she was a homemaker. She died Monday, March 30, 2009, at her residence in Dayton.

She is survived by her husband, Danny Bolton of Dayton, two daughters; Tonya Jenkins and Frances Wilson, both of Dayton, two sons: William David Wilson of Dayton and Tomy A. Wilson of Goodrich, Texas; two sisters: Dorothy Bernard of Flynn, Texas and Jessie Nicholson of Dayton, Texas; two brothers: Wayne Hamilton of Dayton and Earl Hamilton of Liberty; eleven grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
