William Eugene “Jug” Sutton, Jr., 52, of Saratoga, died Friday February 13, 2009 at St. Elizabeth hospital in Beaumont.

Funeral service will be held today Sunday February 15, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. At West End Baptist Church of Saratoga, with Reverend Nathan Hendrix, Tolbert Hudspeth, Don Hinklin officiating interment will follow at the Felps cemetery in Thicket.

Born in Liberty TX, to William Eugene Sutton, Sr. and Marian Hendrix Sutton, Jug was a self employed welder and also worked for Diamond B. Services of Liberty. Jug was a 1974 West Hardin Graduate also a graduate from Lamar University in Welding Technology.

He was preceded in death by his Father; William Eugene Sutton, Sr., Sister; Lisa Gail Sutton. Survivors are Mother; Marian Sutton of Saratoga, Uncle; Hub Sutton and wife Lin of Thicket, Aunt; Billie Sutton of Saratoga, Special cousins; Billie M. Williams of Liberty, Peggy Sellers of Kountze. Slankard

Ewell Wayne Slankard 63, of Batson, was born December 14, 1945 in Beaumont, TX, died February 19, 2009 and joined loved ones who preceded him in death; Son; Chuck Slankard, Father; Ewell Lloyd Slankard and Step father; Roland Jones.

Wayne is survived by his Mother; Sylvia Jones of Beaumont, Sisters; Rolane Hardy of New Braunfels, Beverly Walker and husband Bill of Pearland, Granddaughter; Charlotte Slankard of Baytown and numerous loving aunts, uncles, nephews, and friends.

Graveside service will be today Saturday February 21, 2009 at 2:00 P.M. at Guedry cemetery of Batson.

Barnhart

Diana Lynn Barnhart, 64, of Batson, was born February 29, 1944 in Austin, Texas, and died Tuesday February 3, 2009.

She was preceded in death by Son; Eddie Lannom.

Survivors: are Husband Larry Barnhart of Batson, Sons: Trey Lawless of Tomball, Shane Lannom of Batson, Richard Lannom of Dayton, Daughters: Shelly Main of Katy, RuDonna Coates of Virginia and Misty Lannom of Saratoga, Brother: Mike Smith of Leander, Texas. Sisters: Judy Savoie of Florida, Pat York of Mutagora, Texas and Susan of Huffman, Texas. Grandchildren: 10.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday February 7, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at Batson Prairie Baptist Church in Batson.

Dodson

Kayley Nichole Dodson (Infant), born February 12, 2009. Parents Stephanie Findley and Heath Dodson were saddened when they lost their little one at Cleveland Regional Medical Center, February 12, 2009. They laid their baby to rest Tuesday, February 17, 2009, 2:00 p.m. at Freddie James Nugent Memorial cemetery, Hardin, Texas.

Survivors include her parents; brother, Tyler Dodson; grandmothers, Katherine Scott and Tanya Dodson; grandfather, Kenneth Fregia; aunts and uncles, Hollie Kay, Dylan Kubeczka, Tracie Litton, Justin Litton, and Tabitha Davenport; nieces & nephews, Roy Murphy Litton, Destiny Litton, Paige Nugent, Laurel Litton; great-grandmother, Judith Mason; great-great-grandmother, Doris Geisenberg with many other loving family members.

The family wishes to offer a special thanks to Barbara and Frank Nugent and all the Nugent Family for all their help and support. Also a very special thanks to Tracie and Justin Litton. Words can’t express our love and gratitude for all your love and support. We Love You.

Kaderli

Juanita LaVerne Wolford Kaderli, 86, of Mont Belvieu, died February 18, 2009 at San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, Baytown, Texas.

She was born on January 10, 1923, in Mexia, Texas to parents Walter Slathial Wolford and Annie Iway Wolford. She moved to Mont Belvieu in 1928. She graduated from Barbers Hill High School and played on the Gushers Softball team.

LaVerne was married to Herman Harvey Kaderli for over fifty years. She worked for Exxon for 30 years. LaVerne was an angel to all who knew and loved her. Her grandchildren called her “perfection”. She was the caregiver, always taking care of whoever needed it. She had a nickname for everyone. LaVerne loved to shop, travel and spend time with her family and friends.

Mrs. Kaderli was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herman Harvey Kaderli, a grandson, Corey Blake Kaderli and sisters Merna Leftwich and Lois Elliott.

LaVerne is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Lee Ray and Linda Sue Kaderli, grandsons, Kyle Ray Kaderli and Brent Ross Kaderli, great-grandchildren Kadence and Kamerin Seth Kaderli, brother-in-law Warner Elliott, niece, Clydene Leftwich, other relatives and friends. A special thanks to the wonderful ladies that made her last days easier., Pat O’Bannon, Susie Cox, Jen Shick, Faith Ballew.

Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Sterling Funeral Home, Dayton, Texas, at Two o’clock in the afternoon, Saturday February 21st. Burial will follow in Palms Memorial Park in Dayton, Texas. A visitation will be held Friday February 20th from 6pm until 8pm at Sterling Funeral Home in Dayton, Texas. Pall bearers will be Kyle Ray Kaderli, Dwayne Elliott, Terry Elliott, Wayman Campbell, Keith Elliott, Gary Stacy, Honorary Pallbearer will be Brent Ross Kaderli. Knight

Joe Audway Knight, Sr., 87, of Dayton, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in Liberty after an extended illness.

He was born November 9, 1921 on a farm in Madison County, Texas to parents, George M. and Myrtle S. Knight. His family moved to Liberty County in 1930 and he attended the Dayton Schools until graduating in 1940 as Valedictorian. He was president of his class and co-captain of the football team his senior year at Dayton. He was a third semester student at Sam Houston State University when WWII was declared. Upon finishing the semester he left school and joined the U.S. Navy as an apprentice seaman. He served with the Fleet Radio Unit Pacific as a Radioman 2nd Class and during such period of service was selected as an officer trainee. After completing Naval officer training he served as a Supply Officer on a troop transport in the Pacific until being released from active duty in June of 1946. He held the rank of Lt. when discharged from the Navy and also was a member of the Naval Cryptologic Society. While in the Navy, Knight attended Tulane University and the Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration.
At the end of the conflict, he returned to Tulane University graduating in 1947 with a BBA degree. For a year he worked as Plant Manager for Sinclair Refining Company in Shreveport, La. He returned to Dayton in March 1948 and assumed duties as Assistant Cashier at Dayton State Bank. While working at the bank, Knight helped in the organizing of American Rice Growers Cooperative Association, Dayton Division and assumed duties as General Manger of the Association in March 1949 until his retirement in 1985.

Knight served throughout his life on many committees, demonstrating his love for Dayton and Liberty County. He was a sports fan, liked hunting and being with his family and friends on their ranch in Northeast Uvalde County. He was a former member of the Dayton City Council, the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department, the Liberty County Appraisal Review Board, a director with the Texas Bank of Cooperatives Stockholders’ Advisory Committee and Southeastern Savings Association. He also had served as a director of Cordovan Corporation Publishers, American Rice Growers Exchange, Texas Rice, Inc., American Rice, Inc., Texas Federation of Cooperatives, Ag. Supply, Inc., Texas Soybean Association, Mississippi Chemical Corporation, American Grain Association, Texas Rice Improvement Association, Texas A & M Research and Extension Center, and Rice Council for Market Development. While serving on the above boards and committees, Mr. Knight received many commendations for his dedicated service.

Services for Mr. Knight will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 20, 2009 at the First United Methodist Church in Dayton with the Rev. Jon Stouffer officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Thursday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Boyd Arnold, Bill Johnson, Bob Jamison, Bill Sjolander, Lester Ray Wisegerber, and Ford Flurry will be serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers are Bubba Richter, John Simmons, Howard Lorch and Carl Pickett.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Georgia Mae Knight, Hazel K. Carney and Linda K. Starnes. Mr. Knight is survived by his wife of 58 years, Mary Lea Moore Knight of Dayton; his sons, Joe A. Knight, Jr. of Houston and Jay Knight and wife Jan of Dayton; his grandchildren Jesse Knight and Jenna Knight and one great-grandson, Tyler H. Gilley; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Hoover

Ronald Adam Hoover, 64, died December 16, 2008 at his brothers home in Dayton, Texas.

He was born October 4, 1944 in Liberty, Texas, to parents Rufus Joseph and Dora Mae Watterson Hoover. He grew up in Dayton, attending Dayton Schools where he was a member of the 1963 class. He graduated from Lee College in 1970, University of Houston in 1975and received his Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma in 1977. Ron was a world renowned artist. His work went all over the world. One painting hangs in Washington, D.C. at the Gutenheimer Museum and his works are owned by many prominent people such as Harold Forbes. Ron also had a passion for photography and other art forms. He will be missed dearly by his family and many friends.

A private family burial will be 10:00 a.m., Sunday, February 22, 2008 at Linney cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: Robert Jerome Hoover and Richard Nolan Hoover; his sister: Vivian Bernice Sheffield. He is survived by his brothers: William Ray Hoover and wife Rose of Houston and Charles Franklin Hoover of Dayton; his sisters: Joyce Marie Woods of San Antonio and Charlotte “Kitty” Rogers and husband Paul of Dayton; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dean

Lawrence Orlando Dean, Jr. (affectionately known as Papa Smurf), 63, of Hardin, Texas, died Friday, February 13, 2009.

He was born on February 2, 1946 in Potsdam, New York, to Lawrence Orlando and Eva (Strait) Dean.

Lawrence served in the United States Army for eight years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and raising game chickens.

Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Robert Dean and Maurice “Corky” Dean.

He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 42 years, Linda Dean (Rusty) of Friendswood; daughter, Stacia Wikert and husband Ivan of Montrose, Colorado; sons, Lawrence Orlando Dean, III (D.J.) and wife Lola of Alvin and Jeffrey Dean of Friendswood; brother, Warren Dean and wife Shirley of Norwood, New York; sisters, Janice Rice and husband Robert of upstate New York, Patricia Rouke and husband Patrick of Norwood, New York, and Penelope Fredel of Syracuse, New York; grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Colton, Sterling, and Andrew; and numerous more relatives and close friends.

A memorial service will be held in the Chapel of Sterling Funeral Home at Eleven o’clock in the morning, Saturday February 21st.

Fontenot

Lou Jean “Jeanie” Fontenot, 53, of Dayton, Texas, died Sunday, February 15, 2009.

She was born July 26, 1955 to Elroy Stokes and Lorraine Christine Bjerke in St. Paul, Minnesota. She loved watching football and Nascar. She enjoyed going to garage sales and resale shops to find small treasures. Jeanie had a great smile that could warm your heart. She especially loved the Christmas season, and you could tell this by the amount of decorations she had around the house.

Jeanie was preceded in death by her father, Elroy Stokes and sister, Nancy Schmidt. She is survived by her loving husband, Jimmy Fontenot; son, Tony Black of Denver, Colorado; daughter, Leena Elmore and husband Jerry of Baytown; step-children, Brandon Fontenot and wife Megan of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Andrea Fontenot of Dayton, and Cory Fontenot and wife Leia of Alvin; brother, Jim Stokes and wife Judi of Chetek Wisconsin; four grandchildren, Madison, Kylie, Payton, and Casey; and numerous more relatives and close friends.

A memorial service will be held at Sterling Funeral Home on Thursday, February 19th at Two o’clock in the afternoon. Funeral arrangements for Jeanie have been entrusted to Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N Main, Dayton, Texas 77535. 936.258.2678.

Cumbie

Ruth Arnold Cumbie, 74, of Dayton, died Friday, February 13, 2009, at the Kingwood Hospital in Kingwood.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., Tuesday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Ruth was born September 10, 1934 in Austinville, VA, to parents; William Lawrence and Golde Ella Delp Arnold, a former resident of Richmond, VA, Crosby, and has resided in Dayton/Liberty area for the past 23 years. She was a homemaker, graduate of the Jackson Memorial High School, member of the First Assembly of God and Liberty County Grief Relief. Mrs. Cumbie also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, cooking, gardening, decorating, and church activities.

Mrs. Cumbie was preceded in death by her parents, husband: Berkley Albion Cumbie, Jr., sister: Jean Delp Arnold Cabiness, and brothers: Billy and James J. Arnold, and an infant brother. She is survived by her daughter: Pamela Peska and husband Jimmy Ray of Dayton, son: Berkley Albion Cumbie, III and wife Abigail Gonsalez of Liberty, grandchildren: Sean Camron, Victoria Elizabeth, and Connor Ian Cumbie all of Liberty, sisters: Wanda Lee Abner of GA and Mary Agnes Mullins of VA, brother: Joseph Crockett Arnold of Houston, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Anderson

Paul Donald Anderson, 64, of Dayton, died Saturday, February 14, 2009 in Liberty.

He was born August 24, 1944 in DeRidder, Louisiana, to parents Walter Lee and Lillian Brown Anderson. He graduated in 1963 from Istrouma High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and had lived in Zachary, Louisiana, before moving to Dayton 28 years ago. He worked for Exxon for over 31 years before retiring and cooked with their B-B-Q Cookers. Donald was a member of the Young Farmers, volunteered for the local 4-H Chapter, enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing golf, working with horses, and gardening.

Services for Mr. Anderson will be 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with interment to follow at Magnolia Park cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson: Devin K. Anderson and brother: Jimmie Anderson. He is survived by his wife of 46 years: Betty Brue Anderson of Dayton; his daughters: Donna Petters and husband Vincent of Dayton Jessica Lynn Stanley and husband Shane of Dayton; his sons: Paul Donald Anderson and wife Michelle of LaPorte, and Brian Anderson and wife Lisa of Kenefick; ten grandchildren one great-grandchild; brothers: Steve Anderson of LA, Robbie Anderson and wife Norvella of TX, Walter Lee Anderson, Jr. and wife Gleta of LA, Fred Anderson and wife Sammie of LA, Richard Anderson and wife Katy of LA, and Hershell Anderson of LA; sisters: JoDell Welborn and husband Robert of LA, and Beverly Cable and husband Larry

Jones

George L. Jones, Sr., 70, of Dayton, died Thursday, February 12, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton with burial following at the Palms Memorial Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m., Saturday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

George was born March 31, 1938 in San Augustine, to parents; Albert A. and Leonia O’Quinn Jones and has resided in the Dayton area throughout his life. He was a retired tanker truck driver for Groendyke Transportation after 20 years of employment, member of the Teamsters Local #988, and received numerous driving awards including a two time million mile club certification for safe driving. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and dog Missy, fishing, gardening, and watching wrestling.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law: J.C. and Rachel Douglas, and brothers: Willie D., Larry W. and Jesse B. Jones. He is survived by his wife of 43 years: Linda Douglas Jones of Dayton, sons: Jason Jones of Dayton and George Jones, Jr. and wife Dawn Shipman Jones of Dayton, grandson: George Henry Jones of Dayton, sisters: Mini Lee Worley of Broadus, Sue Knight of Crockett, and Valley Dee Cannon of Montgomery, brother: Gene Jones of Cuero, Special friends: Juanita and Gene Nelson, Wanda and Larry Carouthers, Lynn and Lloyd Leger, Dalton Douglas, and Jaycee Osborn, his dog: Missy, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Stubbs

George Leroy “Bo” Stubbs, 81, of Dayton, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2009, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at the Heirlawn cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

Bo was born June 18, 1927 in Dayton, to parents; Lester L. “Roy” and Vera Robinson Stubbs and has resided in the Dayton area throughout his life. He was a retired supervisor for the Taylor Pipeline Company of Dayton with 13 years of employment, deacon of the South Dayton Baptist Church, and enjoyed gardening, fishing, flowers, and his Christmas lights.

Mr. Stubbs was preceded in death by his parents: Roy and Vera Robinson Stubbs, an infant son, sister: Esther Gates, and brothers-in-law: Henry Vyoral, Sonny Dillard, and Albert Gates. He is survived by his wife of 53 years: Ethel McCoy Stubbs of Dayton, daughter: Fay Brown and husband Sid of Dayton, sons: Benny Stubbs of Dayton and Roy Stubbs and wife Sarah of Dayton, sisters: Louise Vyoral of Dayton and Lavinia Dillard of Dayton, grandchildren: Tiffany and husband Tim, Aaron, Megan, Bryan, Nathan, and Ashley, great-grandchildren: Shaylee, Katie, and Bryce, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Haley

Funeral services for Larry Donell Haley, 58, of Dayton, Texas, will be held Thursday, February 12, 2009, at 6:30 P.M. at Trinity Valley Baptist Church, Liberty and Saturday February 14, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at Henderson Chapel, Magnolia, Arkansas, with the Reverend Marvin Etheridge, officiating, with burial in Old St. Matthew cemetery, McNeal, Arkansas.

A native of McNeal, Arkansas, he was a member of Trinity Valley Baptist Church in Liberty and a graduate of West Liberty High School. He passed away in Dayton, Sunday, February 8, 2009.

Visitation will be held at Trinity Valley from 5:00 P.M. until time of service.

He is survived by two sons: Larry D. Douglas of Dayton and Scottie Haley of Magnolia; five brothers: Arthur Haley, Jr., Bobby Haley, Michael Haley, and Terry Haley, all of Liberty and Charles Haley of Dayton: four sisters: Ruthie Haley and Opal Jordan, both of Liberty and Tina Haley Semien and Jewel Haley, both of Raywood, and a host of other relatives and friends.
