Cox

Dorothy Dixon Cox, 70, of Dayton, died Thursday, June 19, 2008 in Liberty.

She was born May 5, 1938 in Diboll to her parents, C.F. Dixon and Verna Walker Dixon, had lived in Dayton for the last 23 years and was a homemaker.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Junior Cox, son, Ronald Lynn Cox, Sr., brothers, Hubert, Cecil and Ray Dixon and her parents.

She is survived by a son, Ricky Cox, Sr.; Grandchildren, Ricky Cox, Jr., Ronald Lynn Cox, Jr., Lance Cox and his wife Felicia, Chasity McElhaney and her husband Jesse and Eric Cox; 7 great-grandchildren and 1 on the way; brothers, Joe Dixon and his wife Audene of Louisiana and Harold Dixon and his wife Martha of Crosby; sisters, Doris Gwin and her husband Bob and Fay Smith and her husband David all of Baytown, in-laws, Rod and Lou Cox, Linda Cox, Peggy and Richard Knight and Aranna Cox and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, June 23, 2008 at Memory Gardens cemetery with Rev. David Pryor officiating.

The family will receive friends 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Navarre Funeral Home.

Wells

Lafayette A. Wells Jr., age 65, died Friday at MD Anderson Cancer Center.

A lifelong resident of Batson he was born in Liberty August 27, 1942 the son of the late Lafayette A. Wells Sr. and Bessie Mae McCreight Wells. A graduate of Hull-Daisetta High School, class of 1961, he last worked for X-Chem, as an Oilfield Chemical Salesman. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, movies and reading. L.A. also played guitar and sang and was a member of the Professional National Music Association.

He leaves his beloved wife of forty-four years Rita Fern Taylor Wells. His children Lesa Denise Taylor and husband Ronnie Kyle, Rebecca Lynn Harlan and husband Henry Jay, and Robert Keith Wells and wife Christine. Adopted by choice his sons and daughters, Jeffrey Ray Davis, Robert Dale Taylor, Peggy Kindle, and Candice Havard. His grandchildren, Patrick Dewayne Kelley, Garret O’Neil Harlan, Trent Wells Harlan, Tyler Brent Wells, Jake Gray Wells, Heather La Deane Dawn Kelley, Kyleigh Jeanine Cecilia Taylor, as well as an adopted by choice granddaughter Jana Jones. In addition he leaves his two god son’s Jeffrey Hill Smart and Shane Bryan Smart as well as a host of other family and friends.

L.A. will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. Visitation will be held Sunday from 5-9pm at the New Life Assembly of God Church, 42493 Highway 105, Batson, Funeral Service to be held 2pm Monday at New Life Assembly of God with burial to follow in Guedry cemetery. Allison Funeral Service 1101 N. Travis has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Cartwright

John Kerry Cartwright 56, of Humble died Tuesday June 17, 2008 at Memorial Hermann Northeast hospital in Houston.

A native of Houston he had lived in Humble and was a self employed Air condition Technician.

He is survived by his Mother; Jane Cartwright of Dayton, Father; Lynn Cartwright of Houston, Sisters; Donna Todd and husband James of Humble, Pam Hardin and husband Jimmy of Dayton, Granddaughter; Raina, Nieces; Tracy, Deanna, Jennifer, Laura. Nephews; Jason and James.

Funeral service was held Friday June 20, 2008 at 11:00A.M. At Grace Community Baptist Church of Dayton with Pastor Wayne Hardin officiating. Graveside followed also Friday at 2:00p.m. AT Brooke side Memorial Park cemetery in Humble.

Arrangements are under the direction of Faith & Family Funeral Services Inc of Batson, TX.

Mitchell

Elizabeth Ann Mitchell, 40, of Dayton, died Friday, June 13, 2008 in Houston, Texas.

She was born September 18, 1967 in Cleveland, Texas to parents Cecil R. and Marianna Howery Mitchell. She was a life time resident of Dayton where she was Drum Major of the DHS Band before graduating in 1986. Beth was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ.

Memorial Services for Ms. Mitchell will be 3:00 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Liberty Church of Christ. There will be no visitation.

She was preceded in death by her father: Cecil R. Mitchell and is survived by her son: David Hammel of Dayton; her daughters: Marianna E. Hammel and Shelby E. Hammel of Baytown; her mother: Marianna Mitchell of Dayton; her brothers: Cecil R. Mitchell, Jr. of Dayton; and Craig D. Mitchell of Houston; her nieces: Sadonnie Fults, Amanda Mitchell, Brian Mitchell, and Cameron Mitchell.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton.

Guillory

A Mass of Christian Burial for Frank Guillory, 80 of Ames, Texas will be held Thursday. June 19, 2008 at 11 A. M. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Liberty Texas, with The Reverend Father David Edwards, Celebrant with burial in Ames Catholic cemetery.

A native of Mallet, Louisiana, he was a cement finisher, a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #3271 in Liberty.

He died June 16, 2008 at Liberty-Dayton Hospital after an illness. He will lie in state at Wells Funeral Home, Wednesday, June 18, 2008 from Noon until 7 P.M.

Visitation will be held Thursday, June 19, from 9 A.M. until time of service.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Donatto Guillory of Ames, Texas; one daughter: Trusetta Easley of Humble, Texas; one brother Leroy Guillory, Sr. of Raywood, Texas; several grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Benton

Lois M. Benton, age 94, died Sunday, June 15th, 2008 at her home with her family by her side.

Although she lived in Dayton most of her life, she was born in Maud, OK, March 20, 1914, the daughter of the late John I. McBroom and Iona Hewitt McBroom. In addition to being a homemaker and farmer, she enjoyed gardening, sewing, multiple handicrafts and needlework. After retiring from Stanley Home Products, where she accomplished high honors, she indulged her passion for raising exotic birds, cockatiels, cockatoos, canaries, and peacocks.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond A. Brown and Roger Wayne Benton Sr., daughter Nona Rose Brown, son Roger Wayne Benton Jr., son-in-law Patrick Patek, grandson Gregory Dwayne Patek and a great grandson Michael Durkin as well as several brothers and sister.

She leaves behind her loving children, Bonnie Mae Vowell and husband Clifford of Onalaska, TX; Patty Jean Ellison and husband Tommy of Nacogdoches, TX; John Howard Brown of Saudi; Thomas Henry Brown and wife Bonnie of Felton, PA; Rose Mae Jean Patek of Seguin. In addition she leaves behind sixteen grandchildren and twenty-five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Friday June 20th at 10AM in Linney cemetery. Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St. Dayton, TX 77535

Roberts

Lynn Sherman Roberts died on June 15, 2008 following his battle with cancer. Sherman was born in Baytown on September 11, 1933, to Lynn Harlan and Marjorie Roberts.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years: Helen Ruth (Boyett) Roberts of Dayton; daughter: Lynn Helen Brown and husband James of Mont Belvieu; son: Alan Wayne Roberts and wife Stephanie of Bossier City, LA, four grandchildren: Susan Roshell and David Alan Roberts, Melissa Lynn and Randy Aaron Brown and great granddaughters Brooklyn Roshell Roberts and Makenzie Grace Roberts, and Uncle Billy Roberts of Kentucky.

Proceeded in death by parents: Lynn Hardin and Marjorie Roberts, father and mother-in-law: J.B. and Mollie Boyett, infant son: Gary Lynn Roberts, several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and continued his education at the University of Houston and Lamar where he earned his masters degree in education. He spent 37 years teaching in public school. He loved being in the classroom and touching the lives of young people. Sherman taught school and drivers education, in Dayton for 23 years; Stephen F. Austin (5th grade) 1968-1970, Colbert (6th grade) 1970-1976, High School Physical Science (1976-1991). He retired from Dayton in 1991. Following retirement, he taught Adult Basic Education classes in Crosby and LaPorte, 1991-1993, then substituted for half a year at Dayton Junior High, 1993-1994.

Sherman and Helen were active members of First Baptist Church, Dayton for many years before moving to the Old River area where they moved their membership to Old River Baptist Church. He enjoyed serving his savior, his wife, family, friends, co-workers and students. He never met a stranger and had a contagious smile.

The family will receive friends, Tuesday, at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. For those desiring, memorials may be made to Old River Baptist Church or First Baptist Church, Dayton.

A celebration of life service will be held 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at First Baptist Church, Dayton with Pastors Danny Biddy and Randy Piatt officiating. Interment will follow at Memory Gardens cemetery in Baytown after the church service.

Seals

Karen Beth Seals, 23, of Saratoga, was born March 20, 1985 in Galveston TX.

She died Friday June 13, 2008 in Kountze TX due to an automobile accident.

Karen graduated from West Hardin in 2004; she is survived by her Mother; Patricia Seals of Saratoga, Brother; Justin Seals of Saratoga, Grandparents; C.H. and Ada Lawrence of Saratoga. Great uncle N.C. Lawrence of Saratoga, Uncle; James Lawrence and children of Baytown, Aunt; Lori Lawrence of Conroe, Cousins; Curtis Lawrence of Saratoga, Christine Jones and husband Max and son of Baytown. Numerous family members from Mississippi and many special friends.

Funeral service was held Tuesday June 17, 2008 at 10:00A.M. At First Baptist Church of Saratoga with Pastor Frank Aragon officiating.

Visitation was held today Monday June 16, 2008 from 6:00 P.M. Until 9:00 P.M. Also at the church. Interment followed at City cemetery of Saratoga.

Arrangements have been entrsted to Faith & Family Funeral Services of Batson, TX.

Burch

Helen Violet (LaFrance) Burch, 82, of Dayton, Texas, died on Friday, June 13, 2008.

She was born in Iowa, Louisiana on February 6, 1926 to the late Louie and Helen LaFrance. She has been a resident of Dayton nearly her whole life, a dedicated and loving mother and friend to all.

She was preceded in death by her husband Bay Burch, children, Barbara Burch, Aaron Burch, and James Burch; two granddaughters, one great-granddaughter and her parents, and multiple brothers and sisters.

Helen is survived by her children, Shelton Burch and wife Marla, Jimmy Burch and wife Debbie, Dennis Burch and wife Diana, Lester Burch and wife Etta, Loryie Burch, Oscar Burch, John Burch and wife Martha, Edna Anderson and husband Bobby, Brenda Williams and husband William; thirty-six grandchildren, seventy-nine great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Helen is also survived by her sister Lillian Touchet.

Visitation will be held Sunday, June 15, 2008 from 3-8 PM at Sterling Funeral Home 602 N. Main St. Dayton, TX 77535. Funeral Services will be Monday, June 16, 2008 at 2PM at Sterling Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Palms cemetery of Dayton.

Moore

Raymond Gale Moore 58, Of Sour, Lake died Sunday June 8, 2008 at The Kountze Nursing Center.

A native of Rochester Pennsylvania, Raymond was a retired school teacher with thirty - three years of service teaching at Legacy Christian Academy, Sylvan Learning Center of Beaumont, West Hardin I.S.D. of Saratoga and Hardin Jefferson of Sour, Lake. Raymond was devoted to his family and church and enjoyed life to the fullest.

He was preceded in death by his parents; Gale and Betty Moore.

Survivors include his wife of twelve years JoCarroll Moore of Sour, Lake, Stepsons; Shad Priddy and wife Jodi of Sour, Lake, Tadd Priddy and wife Miranda of Sour, Lake. Stepdaughter; Deana Dear and husband Patrick of Sour, Lake. Brother; Robert Moore of Detroit Michigan Sister; Carol Cooke of Mentor Ohio. Grandchildren; Sharadan, Jessallyn, Somerlin, Trevin, Cole, Riley, Justin, Janson, Joshua, also longtime friend Wanda Alexander and canine daughter Sundi.

A service of remembrance was held Wednesday June 11, 2008 at 10:00A.M. At New Covenant Worship Center of Saratoga with Pastor Wade McKinney, Clarence Russell, and Gerald Ratcliff officiating.

The family received friends Tuesday June 10, 2008 at the church. Interment followed at the Pine Ridge cemetery in Sour, Lake. Memorial contributions may be made to; New Covenant Worship Center Building Fund Po Box 300 Saratoga TX, 77585. Arrangements have been entrusted to Faith & Family Funeral Service of Batson, TX.

Garza

Audrey Garza, 60, of Dayton, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away Wednesday, June 11, 2008 in Baytown.

She was born February 10, 1948 in Chicago Illinois to her late parents, Charles Kornita and Gertrude Eleanor Siegel, resided in Baytown for most of her life and had lived in Dayton for the last 10 years.

Audrey was preceded in death by a sister, LaVerne Bassett, brother, Steve Kornita and her parents.

Survivors include: husband, Roberto Garza of Dayton; sons, Robbie Garza and his wife Dina of Baytown, Tony Garza and his wife Christie of Dayton, Carlos Garza and his wife Sarah of Deer Park and Nicholas Garza and his wife Leah of Crosby; sisters, Shirley Macabee of Escanaba, Michigan, Roberta Nipp of Marinette, Wisconsin and Nancy Kornita of Wisconsin; brother, Fred Tessmer of Wisconsin; grandchildren, River, Marissa, Robbie, Nicholas, Brooke, Kaylee, Joshua, Peyton, Kaleb and Chasidy and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Navarre Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Memory Gardens cemetery in Baytown under the direction of Navarre Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends Friday, June 13, 2008 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Serving as pallbearers will be Roberto Garza, Robbie Garza, Tony Garza, Carlos Garza, Nicholas Garza and Raul Garza.

Smith

James C. Smith, Jr. age 76, died Thursday at his home in Hardin, TX. Funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at the Hardin Baptist Church at 4:00 P. M., with the Rev. Tony Hines and Rev. William Fabriquze officiating. Burial will follow in the Hardin Chapel cemetery. A visitation will be held on Saturday, June 14, at the Allison Funeral Service 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, TX.

‘Jimmy’ was born on May 26, 1932 in Jasper, TX, to James C. Smith Sr. and Rebecca Brummett Smith. He was a graduate of the Hardin high school in 1950 and the Sam Houston State University in 1954. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, and married Janice Mae Curtis on May 27, 1961 in Houston, TX. He was a chemical operator for the OXY Chemical Corp. and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and making walking canes. He was a active member of the Hardin Baptist church and the Friendship Sunday School Class

Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents: James C. Smith and Robbie Smith, a brother: James Clyde Smith, a uncle: Clyde Smith, and aunt: Ima Jane Smith, grandparents: John Wesley and Stella Smith. The survivors are his wife: Janice Curtis Smith of Hardin, TX a son: James C. ‘Jim’ Smith, III., a daughter and son-in-law: Jana Koen and Don Koen, a brother and sister-in-law: Buford ‘Peanut’ Smith and Linda Smith, and two grandsons: Cameron and Carson Koen, and a host of other family members and friends.

Clay

Richard Dale Clay, age 49, died Thursday at his home in Hardin, TX.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 16, 2008 at the South Park cemetery, 1310 Main Street, Pearland, TX., at 1 P.M., with the Rev. Jeffrey Stracner officiating. A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 15, 2008 at the Sterling Funeral Home 602 Main Street, Dayton, TX from 3:00 P. M. until 7:00 P. M.

Richard was born on January 23, 1959 in Houston, Texas to Wilborn Richard Clay and Sally Ann Anderson, and he graduated from the South Houston High School, and was an Operator/Shut Down Specialist for the Petroleum Ind. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and working on his boat.

Richard is preceded in death by his father, and brother: Steven Clay, and both grandparents. The survivors are his mother: Sally Ann Clay, a niece: Ericka Brink, a sister: Leveda Parrish and Brother-In-Law: Roger Parrish.
