He graduated from Ball High School in Galveston and attended Texas A & M, receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1944. He also served in the United States Air Force with the rank of Captain, returning in Galveston to practice veterinary medicine in 1954. He practiced for 41 years and also undertook a variety of business ventures, including airline interests, real estate development and ranching. He was Chairman of the Board of Metro Airlines, a publicly traded company which operated American Eagle and other regional airline carriers, and was a pioneer of the “hub and spoke” route network and airline codesharing in the wake of airline deregulation.

His real estate interests over the years include high-rise condominium developments on Galveston’s east beach- the Galvestonian and Islander East. He led family businesses which operate ranches in Medina, San Patricio and Liberty, Texas and northwest Kansas. His ranching activities were his passion, especially later in life, and he was active in cattle ranch management until his last days from his home on Spindletop Ranch, which is one of the top-producing cow-calf operations in the nation.

Dr. Henderson leaves a legacy of community and civic service, particularly in Galveston, where he served on the Galveston City Council. During his tenure, the Council created the Galveston Historical District, which he knew would be important to preserving the city’s heritage and enhancing tourism. He served on numerous civic and business boards, including many years on the board of Galveston’s Hutchings Sealy Bank (now Bank America).

Dr. Henderson was an active member and supporter of the Texas A & M Former Student Association. In 1991, he was honored by Texas A & M University as a Distinguished Alumni. He was a lifelong Aggie and appreciated every aspect of A & M’s spirit and excellence.

Cherishing his memory is hi wife Cathy – his love, partner and friend for 55 years – and his children and seven grandchildren: Tina Blake, her husband Bruce Blake and children Jessica and Alex Blake (of Liberty, Texas), son Edmond, Jr. (of Devers, Texas), son James C. Henderson and his wife Anne Henderson and children Claire and Holly (of Galveston, Texas), daughter-in-law Maribel Henderson and granddaughter Mary Catherine (of Houston, Texas), and daughter Amy Hawkins and her husband Jay Hawkins and sons Daniel and George (of Arlington, Virginia).
