Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 26, 2008 from 5pm until 8pm at Allison Funeral Service, Liberty, Texas. Graveside services will be Thursday, March 27, 2008, at 2pm at the Wiggins Family Plot in Fairlawn cemetery, Liberty, Texas.

He was born January 14, 1932 to parents Chester and Hettie Brown Wiggins, in Overton, Rusk County, Texas.

After first settling in Hardin, Chester was employed with Humble Oil and Refining Company so the family followed the oil boom of the 1930s across East Texas but finally returned to Liberty in 1939. Hillary attended Liberty Schools graduating in 1950 from Liberty High.

In 1951 he decided to join the US Navy and his training began in San Diego, CA. Shortly after boot camp he was assigned to the USS Rowan, DD782, and did two tours to Korea. While in Wonsan Harbor the Rowan received fire from shore batteries and much damage was done to the ship. He received wounds that could have earned him a Purple Heart but he brushed aside any thought of applying for it, considering them not significant when compared to many of his ship mates.

Hillary served on two other ships, USS Kermit Roosevelt and USS Delta before he was discharged in October of 1954 in Long Beach, CA, and returned home to Liberty. His parents were in the grocery business. He decided to join them in this effort after his brother promised to join him in the family business after graduating from college. Hillary and brother Charles bought the business from their parents in 1961. Wiggins Grocery continued to grow and in 1977 they opened Thrif-tee Foods in Dayton. In 1980 they opened Thrif-tee Foods in Liberty. In 1983 Wiggins Grocery on Beaumont Avenue was sold but they continued to operate Thrif-tee Food Stores in Dayton and Liberty. Eventually the two stores were sold, Liberty Thrif-tee in 1985, and Dayton Thrif-tee in 1991. Later the brothers bought an interest in First Liberty National Bank. Hillary served on the board of the bank several years.

He operated his ranch, at Ames, Texas, which he named “Hardtimes” where he raised Longhorns and he enjoyed his grandchildren. Hillary was an avid duck and goose hunter with family and friends and his beloved Labrador “Jack” by his side.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #48 of Liberty and achieved a fifty year pin for his service. A proud moment in his life.

Hillary is preceded in death by his parents, Chester and Hettie Wiggins, first wife Betty Jewel Switzer Wiggins, and daughter Irish Lea Wiggins. He is survived by his daughter, Tacy and husband James Dubose, sister Margie Wiggins Lawrence and husband Doyle, and brother Charles R. Wiggins and wife Jo Ann. Grandchildren Camron and wife Sherry Dubose, Fletcher, Morgin, Jorden, and Dru Dubose, one great grandson Pepper Edon Dubose. Nephews Hillary and David Lawrence, Kevin and Karl Wiggins, nieces Tami Wiggins and Lisa Lawrence Merritt. Surviving is his second wife Vera Merle of Hardin, Texas.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
