Denton

Baxter “Sonny” Denton, age 55, of Porter, Texas, died Saturday, January 19, 2008.

He was born in Houston, Texas on March 17, 1952.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 23, 2008, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January 24, 2008, 3:30 p.m. at the Pace-Stancil Chapel, Cleveland, Texas.

Maharrey

Chloe Annie “Mama Bill” Maharrey, age 104, died Friday at her home in Dayton.

She was born October 1, 1903 in Poplar Creek, Mississippi the daughter of the late Charles Owen Brown and Julia Ann Greene Brown. She moved from Mississippi to Dayton in 1938. She enjoyed reading her bible and her time with family. Her husband of twenty-three years, Udell Maharrey passed away in 1950.

Beside her husband and parents she was also predeceased by her son Earley Lee Tucker, brothers Jay, Sam, Sims, and Rev Atley Brown. Her sisters Jesse Palmertree, Ollie Braswell, Sally Crowder, Minerva Crockett, and a grandson Douglas Cox.

She leaves behind her daughter Evelyn Cox of Dayton, grandchildren, Jo Ann Shipman, Wayne Tucker and Leonard Tucker, great grandchildren, Rob Flurry, Tobyn Cox, Tina Tucker, Phillip Tucker, Henry Shipman, and Leila Shipman. Great-Great Grandchildren T.J. Flurry, J.C. Martin, Jesse Martin, Kayleigh Jenkins and Arron Jenkins, as well as her Great-Great-Great Grandchildren, Ashton Jenkins and Preston Jenkins.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5-8pm at the Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St. Dayton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday 2pm at the funeral home with Rev. L.D. Scott officiating, internment to follow at Magnolia cemetery, Dayton.

Johnson

Jerry Benjamin Johnson, 60, of Liberty, Texas died Thursday, January 17, 2008 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

He was born on July 24, 1947 to Willie Earl and Lena Reye (McKinley) Johnson in Liberty, Texas. Jerry was an outdoorsman and enjoyed camping. He also enjoyed music and war movies.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; and son, Benjamin Grady Johnson. He is survived by his daughter, Sarah Ernst of Butler, PA; step-sons, Christopher Murdoch and wife Stephanie of Cypress and Timothy Murdoch of Houston; brother, Willie Ray Johnson and wife Mary Ann of Hardin; sisters, Bobbie Jean Johnson of Liberty and Janette Carrell of Houston; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 12:00 until 2:00 PM Wednesday, January 23 with funeral services beginning at 2:00 PM at Allison Funeral Service. Interment will be in Houston National cemetery.

Kalenda

John Kalenda, 88 of Dayton, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 in Dayton after an extended illness. He was born January 20, 1919 in Dayton to parents; Frank and Veronika Kalenda.

A lifelong resident of Dayton he graduated from Dayton High school class of 1939 and worked as a welder for Exxon before retiring. Mr. Kalenda loved his family and listening to Czech music. He was an outdoorsman that enjoyed Farming, Gardening, and beekeeping. Graveside services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 22, 2008 at Eastgate cemetery with Rev. Larry Koslovsky officiating. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday evening at the funeral home. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. Mr. Kalenda was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Frances Skopal Kalenda, his son: John L. Kalenda, son-in-law: Palmer Anton Thonsgaard, one sister and one brother. He is survived by his daughter: Frances Thonsgaard of Dayton; his grandchildren: Karen Gruenzner and husband Mark of Atascocita and Pete Thonsgaard and wife Tish of Dayton; great-grandchildren: Ryan, Kyle, and Dylan Gruenzner and Jake, Paul and Jules, Thonsgaard; and sister-in-law: Doris Skopal of Hondo.

Sakowicz

Carolyn Kay Sakowicz, age 67, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 in Baytown. She was born May 3, 1941 In Danville, IL.

She wed May 3, 1958 to her beloved husband of 50 years David Sakowicz. Together they enjoyed traveling, fishing and what ever adventures came their way. They owned and operated Lucky S Farms for many years in the Channel View Area. Carolyn was predeceased by her daughter Dianna Bertothy and her sister Marsha Starr. Beside her husband she leaves her son David K. Sakowicz II and a daughter Linda Berquist. In addition she leaves her two grandchildren Andrew and Brian Berquist.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 1-4pm at the Sterling Funeral Home, 1201 S. Main, Anahuac, Funeral service to be held Monday 10am at the funeral home with Rev. Albert Billingsly officiating, burial to follow in Anahuac cemetery.

Roy

Francis Roy, Sr., 76, of Anahuac, Texas, died Monday, January 14, 2008.

He was born on July 31, 1931 to Leo and Izama (Leger) Roy in Abbeville, Louisiana. Francis had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed working, fishing and the occasional trip to the casino.

He is preceded in death by his parents; son, Francis Roy, Jr.; daughter, Barbara Boozer; step-daughter, Cindy Strode; and former wife, Hazel Mae Corner. He is survived by his loving wife Margaret Roy; daughter, Sarah Talley; son, Raymond Duhon; step-children, Leslie Willey, Jr., Scott Willey, John Willey, and Stacey Medders; grandchildren, Thomas Roy, Doris Matlock, Frances Bratton, Everett Boozer, Richard Weaver, Rachel Weaver, Cody Arnold, Mandy Arnold, Jennifer Pommier, and Kayler Roy; fifteen step-grandchildren; great-grandchildren, Daniel Bratton, Tessa Peterson, Tyra Braxton, Kiylee Weaver, Kamyren Weaver, Sampson Boozer, Madelyn Boozer, Christian Arnold, and Emma Pommier; three step-great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 until 8:00 o’clock in the evening Wednesday, January 16th at Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. A service of remembrance will be at 10:00 o’clock in the morning, Thursday, January 17th at Anahuac Assembly of God with Rev. David Watts officiating.

Green

Sarah Mae Green 90, was born to Mr. John and Mrs. Ora Martin of Evergreen Texas. She was a very polite and gentle woman who died on January 11, 2008.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband, Mr. Frank Green, her grandson, Earrick Green and granddaughter, Tabatha Edmond.

She leaves to cherish her loving memories; a son, Claudis Rathel Edmond; her daughter, Ora Marie Green both of Shepherd TX; also, a best friend, Ethel Rea Bass of Shepherd TX; her loving granddaughters, Yolanda Langston and husband, Tommie and Latoya Edmond of Houston TX; a step-grandson, Harold Eastland also of Houston, TX and a numerous amount of great-grandkids, Kristi Edmond, Sade Brown, Ray Shepherd III, Josephine Edmond, Demetris Edmond, Georgette Edmond and her little special ones, Bryana Wicks and Joseph A. Edmond both of Houston TX, and a host of great-great-grandkids, cousins, and other family members and countless friends.

Rev. M.L. Williams conducted funeral services held at the Lake Pool Baptist Church, Shepherd, Texas on Saturday, January 19, 2008, 10:00 a.m. with interment at Mt. Moriah cemetery, Evergreen, Texas.

Le Normand

Lenora Cordelia Gunter Le Normand “Nana”, 81, of Liberty, Texas, died Monday, January 14, 2008.

She was born on March 24, 1926 to Adolphus and Daisy Dean (Long) Castleberry in De Valls Bluff, Arkansas. Cordelia enjoyed knitting, crocheting, gardening, and sewing.

Cordelia is preceded in death by her parents; loving husbands, Howard Woodrow Gunter and Felton Le Normand; grandchildren, Valerie Jeannette Fisher and Howard Woodrow Gunter, III; two brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by her children, Ivonne Bittick and husband Maurice of Cleveland, Jeannette Fisher and husband Dan of Pasadena, and Woody Gunter and wife Betty of Carrollton; sister, Dorothy Robohm of West Plains, Missouri; grandchildren, Kristine Bittick, Mistie Walker, Howard Fisher, Monica Tillery, and Leslie Bittick; step-grandchild, Gary Le Normand, Jr.; great-grandchildren, William, Toby, Evan, Ryan, Kaytlynn, Kody, Bentley, Hagen, Matt, and Hannah; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 until 8:00 in the evening, Thursday, January 17 at Allison Funeral Service. A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 in the afternoon, Friday, January 18 at Allison Funeral Service with interment to follow in Moss Hill cemetery.

Harper

Patricia Gail Harper, 55, of Cleveland, Texas, died, Sunday, January 13, 2008. She was born in Minden, Louisiana on November 3, 1952 to Bill and Sarah Brown. Memorial services were held Saturday, January 19, 2008, 4:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel, Cleveland, Texas.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Wayne Harper; sons, Chris Pate, Robert Wolfe and wife, Angelica; sister, Melinda Belz and husband, Clifton; brothers, Scott Brown, and wife, Donna, Sam Brown and wife, Sharon; grandchildren, Ethan Pate, Allison Wolfe, Andrew Wolfe; numerous nieces, nephews, and other cherished family members and caring friends.

Chapman

Ira Jean Chapman, 80, of Cleveland, Texas, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008. She was born in Houston, Texas on May 15, 1927 to Ira W. and Ella Chapman.

She is survived by her mother, Ella Chapman; cousin, Robert Dotch and wife, Anie, George Dortch, Donald Dortch and wife, Violet; uncle, Roland Hill and wife, Jenny; niece, Rachel Dortch and many other nieces, nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 19, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel, Cleveland, Texas with interment at Montague cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.

Crawford

Reuel B. Crawford, age 102, died Wednesday, January 16, 2008, in a Baytown Hospital. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 10:00 A. M., in the Allison Funeral Service Chapel 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, TX, 77575 with the Reverend Carlton O. Bailey officiating, with burial in the Moss Hill Community cemetery, Moss Hill, TX. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 18, 2008 from 5 pm until 8 pm, at Allison Funeral Service. Reuel was born July 7, 1905 in Livingston, TX, to Thomas Benjiman Crawford and Sallie Taylor Crawford. He grew up on the family farm and he became one of the best farmer in the area. He enjoyed growing all kinds of crops and working with the animals on the farm. He was a Baptist by faith.

Reuel is preceded in death by his parents, first wife of 67 years: Mary Nell Crawford, a son: Nolan Crawford, two sisters: Ruth Smith and Louada Parrish, and three brothers: Horace, Rayford, and T. B. Crawford.

He is survived by his wife: Louise Canada Crawford. They were married on September 20, 1997 in Moss Hill, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews, and cousins.

Jordan

Kenneth Wayne Jordan, 72, of Cleveland, Texas, died Friday, January 12, 2008. He was born in Montgomery County, Texas, on September 1, 1935 to Albert and Adeel Jordan.

Survivors include his daughters, Rhonda Jordan Markham and husband, Jack; Terrie Eaton, Shirley Sparrow; son, Rodney Jordan and wife, Wendy; brother, James Ott; seven grandchildren, Aron Jordan, Caleb Jordan, and Rachel Jordan, Thomas Eaton, Amy Self, Crystal Self, Lindsey Goodliffe; great-grandchildren, Alex Self, Ryan Ordonez, Asara Ordonez, and Aden Self; numerous nieces, nephews and other cherished family members and caring friends.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, January 15, 2008, 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 10:00 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Security cemetery, Security, Texas.

Prater

Vivian B. Brooks Prater, 85, of Dayton, died Monday, January 14, 2008 in Liberty, after an extended illness.

She was born August 27, 1922 in Vivian, Louisiana to parents, Edgar Eugene and Ruth Trammel Brooks. She moved to Dayton from Alvin in 1940, graduated from Dayton High School in 1941, and married her loving husband, Glenn Prater in 1950. A member of the First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for over 27 years, participated in many church activities and was a member of United Methodist Women. She taught private kindergarten, was a wonderful cook and loved her cats. Services for Mrs. Prater will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 17, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church with interment to follow at Magnolia Park cemetery. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. Mrs. Prater was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Cecile Hall. She is survived by her husband of 57 years: Glenn Prater of Dayton and her son: Dr. Carey Glenn Prater and wife Tammy of Tyler; one niece; one nephews; other relatives and a host of friends.

Berry Russell W. Berry Jr., age 13, died Tuesday, January 1, 2008, in Creston, IL.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2008, at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel 1101 North Travis Street Liberty, TX., with the Rev. Cecil Hudson, officiating. Russell was born on March 8, 1994, in Little Rock, Arkansas, to Russell W. Berry Sr., and Katherine Sills.

Russell was a former student of the Liberty Middle School and a member of the band, playing the trumpet. He was a member of National Junior Honor Roll Society.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters: Deja Brewer and Cheyenne Berry, a brother: Jeremy Tinsley, grandparents: James and Lorraine Carter of Liberty, TX., Virginia Massey of Kingsland, TX, Dennis and Norma Berry of Austin, TX, William and Joann Sills of Coolemee, N.C., and a great grandmother: Zaidee Cass of Coolemee, N.C., and several aunts and uncles and cousins.

Delane

Rebecca Lynn Hunnel Delane, age 52, died Friday at East Houston Regional.

She was born August 5, 1955 in Little Falls, Minnesota, the daughter of Art and Elsie Hunnel. She will be remembered for putting all others before her, her loving heart, and her passion for her family and friends.

Besides her parents she leaves her husband William Delane, Sons Chris Cheney, Clifton Cheney and his wife Kellie, James Delane and his wife Amy, and a daughter Donna Hornberger and her husband Jay. In addition she leaves her grandchildren, Cynthia, Skyler, Trenton, Jason Camille, Noah, Andrew, Desmond, Aujua, Amelia, Nicole, Dylan, and a number of other relatives and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be held from 11-1pm Tuesday at the Sterling Funeral Home, 602 N. Main St. Dayton with a service of remembrance to be held at 1pm. Burial will follow in Magnolia cemetery, Dayton.

Lusty

Mary Jo Smith Lusty, 67, of Dayton, died Thursday, January 10, 2008 in Baytown, after an extended illness. She was born April 2, 1940 in Greensburg, Indiana to parents: Henry and Evelyn Mae Hampton Smith. A homemaker and LVN she had lived in Dayton since 1975 after moving from the Houston and Pasadena area. Mrs. Lusty enjoyed television and reading.

Graveside services for Mrs. Lusty will be 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 19, 2008 at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. Visitation will be 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her sons: Richard A. “Rick” Varney, II of Dayton; Steven R. Varney of Dayton; and Darren G. Varney of Dayton; four grandchildren; brothers: Jerry Smith of Centerville, and Ronnie Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Meekins

Robert Earl Meekins, born, March 20, 1918, died at home in Cleveland, Texas.

He graduated from Cleveland High School in 1936, worked as carpenter before going to Hawaii in 1941. He joined the US Navy See Bee’s 1942 and was shipped to Scotland; spent 4 years operating cranes unloading ships and shore patrol. He came home in 1946, attended University of Houston, worked as contractor on homes, pipelines, compressor stations. In 1952 he joined home building as Construction Engineer building homes, schools, and banks; 1960 he joined Brown & Root, Houston as shop foreman. He and Dave Rice started Hub Lumber and Construction in 1965. He marred Donnice Long in 1969; retired in 1976 to building, remodeling homes and helping others sometime in the 1950’s he became a 32° Mason.

Departed January 12, 2008.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday, January 16, 2008, 2:00 p.m. at Cleveland Memorial Park cemetery, Cleveland, Texas.

Luckey

Jesse Earnest Luckey, 77, 0f Hardin, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 at his residence. Born to Stafford Luckey and Irene Luckey in Devils Garden Florida, he had lived in Hardin most of his life and was a self-employed roofer for 50 years. Jesse is survived by his loving wife; Gerry Luckey who faithfully took care of him many years up until the end.

Daughters; Carrie Raggio of Antascocita and Lisa Barker of Moss Hill. Brothers: Russell Luckey and Owen Luckey, Nephew; Franklin Luckey. Grandchildren: James and Evan Barker. Cremation service handled under the direction of Faith & Family Funeral Services.

Scott

Sylvia Scott, 60, of Dayton, died Saturday, January 12, 2008 in Liberty. She was born February 15, 1947 in Baytown, Texas, to J. R. and Nelda Rae Norris McCauley. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown and had lived in the Dayton area for the past 12 years.

Services for Mrs. Scott will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 16, 2008 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. V. R. Hylton officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Scott will be 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her son: Timothy Dewayne Scott. She is survived by her husband: Terry Raymond Scott of Dayton; her daughters: Lisa Smith and husband Richard of Dayton; Christine High and husband Steven of Dayton, Cynthia Scott and Trey Shockley of Dayton; Grandchildren: Rebecca Smith, Tyler Smith, McKenna Patty, and Faith Shockley.
