Latham

Edna Lorene Ferguson Latham, 88, of Dayton, died Monday, December 31, 2007 in Liberty.

She was born November 6, 1919 in Charlie, Texas, to parents, James and Nettie Mae Young Ferguson. She was a long time resident of Houston, where she volunteered in the nursery of the North Channel Baptist Church before she moved to Dayton 4 ½ years ago. A member of Grace Community Baptist Church in Dayton, she enjoyed church activities especially the Ladies Group. Mrs. Latham also loved to sew, quilt, cook for her family, sing and tend her garden. A celebration of life will be 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Hardin officiating. Graveside service will be 2:00 p.m., Friday, January 4, 2008 at Folson Chapel cemetery in Center, Texas. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. Mrs. Latham was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 36 years, Joe Olen Latham, son: Jesse Latham, daughter: Glenda parson, four grandchildren, sister: Mary Ozell Bullman, brother: James Wesley Ferguson and cherished friend, Helen Sirman. She is survived by her daughters: Lois Stone of Odessa, Ruby Radford of Hydro, Oklahoma, Virginia Estep of Dayton, Myrtie Austin of Canyon Lake, Barbara Huggins of Conroe, Kathy Avery of Livingston, Dorothy Sowell of Center, Shirley Platt of Houston, Brenda Walters of Huffman; her sons: Joe Latham of Hankamer, Hugh Latham of Amarillo, Jerry Latham of Denver, Colorado, and John Latham of Channelview; also numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, other relatives and friends.

Wurz

Margie Jane Potter Wurz, 83, of Dayton, died Saturday, December 29, 2007, in Liberty, Texas.

She was born July 6, 1924 in Del Rio, Texas, to parents John and Sofia Johnson Potter and attended Del Rio High School. Mrs. Wurz and her husband, Robert R. Wurz, Sr. raised their family, while working in the oil industry, in Australia, France, and Scotland, moving to Dayton in 1976. A homemaker, she remained very active until a few months ago. She enjoyed working in her yard, was a member of the VFW, and attended Senior Citizen activities. She had also been a member of a bowling league.

Graveside services for Mrs. Wurz will be 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at Palms Memorial Park cemetery with Judge Phil Fitzgerald officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 12:00 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home prior to the service.

She is preceded in death by her parents and husband, Robert R. Wurz, Sr. She is survived her son: Robert R. Wurz, Jr. and wife Benita; her daughter: Margie J. Powell; grandchildren Robert G., Rodney and Katie Wurz and Brookelyn Powell.

Weber

Gussie Carolyn Johnson Weber, 66, of Dayton, died Friday, December 28, 2007, in Houston Texas, after a lengthy illness.

She was born December 1, 1941 in Apalachicola, Florida, to parents Joseph and Irene Hagan Johnson. She was a manager for Randalls’ grocery in Galveston. Gussie was a member of Cornerstone Church, Liberty, Texas.

Services for Mrs. Weber are as follows, visitation Sunday, December 30, 2007 from 5:00 til 9:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. Graveside service 10:00 a.m. Monday December 31, 2007 at Magnolia cemetery, Dayton, Texas.

She is predeceased by her parents and a sister, Betty Jo Lowe.

She is survived by her husband: Melvin Weber; her son: Doug Weber; her daughters: Melissa Johnson and Regina Sensing and husband Chris; brothers: Willie Johnson, Franklin Johnson and Donnie Johnson: Grandchildren: Brent Louviere, Alan Louviere, Matt Johnson, Micah Weber, McRay Weber; one great-grandchild Kylie Louviere, Numerous nieces and nephews.

McMillan

Lawrence Neal McMillan, Sr., 87, of Cleveland, died Friday, December 28, 2007 after a lengthy illness. He was born July 23, 1920 in Houston, Texas, to parents, Neal O. and Earline Blaylack McMillan. He served in the United States Coast Guard as a Merchant Marine. He worked as an insurance agent before retiring and was a member of the New Life Baptist Church. Services will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 31, 2007 at the New Life Baptist Church with interment to follow at Plum Grove cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday evening at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel in Dayton. Mr. McMillan was preceded in death by his parents and his son: Mark McMillan. Survivors include his wife: Virginia McMillan; his sons: Larry McMillan and wife Helen; Denis McMillan and wife Kay; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and numerous relatives and friends.

Brown

Betty Jo Brown, 76, formerly of Hardin, died Monday, December 24, 2007 at the Scott and White Hospital in Temple.

She was born on August 1, 1931 in Conroe, TX, to parents, Walter Faulkner and Fannie E. Devers Faulkner. She was attended Conroe High School. Betty was a “people person”. She was a member of the Liberty Church of Christ. She enjoyed cooking, traveling and game night at the Hardin Senior Citizen Center.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Lawrence T. Brown; daughter, Lori Denise Brown, and sisters; Hazel Towns, Faye Bolton, and Virgie Ainsworth.

She is survived by her children, Lawrence R. Brown and his wife Debbie of Ft. Collins, CO and Jim Brown and wife, Debra of Georgetown, TX. Grandchildren: Jeff Brown, Lance Brown, Cami Murphy and Amanda May and great-grandchildren: Emma, Jared, Kylie, Hannah, Carter and Ellie as well as many other relatives and friends also survive.

Services will be held on Friday, December 28, 2007 at 11 A.M. at the Liberty Church of Christ and a visitation will be held at Allison Funeral Service on Thursday, December 27th from 5 to 8 P.M. Interment will be at the Hardin Chapel cemetery in Hardin, TX.

Sopchak

Martin Sopchak, 77, of Huffman, died Saturday, December 22, 2007, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 p.m., Thursday, December 27, 2007, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at 2:30 p.m., at the Houston National cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the funeral home.

Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil funeral Home in Dayton.

Martin was born January 12, 1930 in Fairchilds, to parents; John and Sarah Applelonius Sopchak, was a former resident of Houston, and has resided in the Huffman area for the past 40 years.

He was a retired rig welder in the oil field industry, former employee of Brown and Root after 25 years, veteran of the US Army with service during the Korean War, and enjoyed making BBQ pits and jewelry, and shrimping. Mr. Sopchak was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Frank and Jim Sopchak, and son-in-law: George Ramfos. He is survived by his wife of 40 years: Margie J. Hughes Sopchak of Huffman, daughters: Terry Lee Corozis and husband Stavros of Humble, Peggy Ann Ramfos of Houston, and Tracey Jo Sopchak of Huffman, sons: Stephen Sopchak of Huffman and Martin Sopchak and wife Sendy of Splendora, sister: Mary Ruth Buechman of Sealy, brothers: Lawrence Sopchak of Sealy and Raymond Sopchak of Huffman, 12 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Robinson

James E. Robinson, 79, of Hardin, died Monday, December 24, 2007, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 29, 2007, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home with burial following at Hardin Chapel cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, at the funeral home.

Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton. James was born October 15, 1928 in Kickapoo, to parents; Manson and Audrey Sorrel Robinson, and has resided in the Hardin area throughout his life. He was a graduate of the Hardin High School, retired brick layer, 50 year member of the Brick Layer’s Local #1, former owner and operator of Robinson’s Grocery, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, mowing, gardening, reading, and watching westerns. Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Pearlie Lee Patterson, and brother: Ray Robinson.

He is survived by his wife if 23 years: Helen Ellis Robinson of Hardin, daughters: Cindy Cole and husband Sambo of Hardin, and Janelle Murray and husband Randy of LaPorte, son: James “Larry” Robinson and wife Grace of Baytown, brother: Lenard Robinson and wife Merl of Batson, eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Moses

Brenda T. Moses, 47, of Hardin, Texas died Friday, December 21, 2007.

She was born April 24, 1960 to Harold Treadway and Mary (Weishuhn) Stewart in Borger, Texas.Brenda was a Registered Nurse that worked in the emergency room at Cleveland Regional Hospital. She loved to go to rodeos, fish, and horseback ride.

She is preceded in death by her father, Harold Treadway; step-father, James Stewart; brother, Gary Lynn Treadway; and her grandparents. She is survived by her husband, E.M. Davis; daughter, Courtney Moses; son, Davin Moses; step-son, Richard Davis; mother, Mary Stewart; grandchildren, Tyler Webb, Harley Davis, Kayd Davis, and Colton Davis; special friends, Lexi Schliskie, Me’shelle Corbin, and many more family and friends.

A visitation to celebrate Brenda’s life will be from 4:00 until 6:00 PM Sunday, December 23, 2007 at Sterling Funeral Home.

Wirick

Gladys M. “Lynn” Stephens Wirick, 75, of Dayton, died Friday, December 21, 2007, at the Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 24, 2007, at the First United Methodist Church of Dayton with burial following at Magnolia Park cemetery in Dayton. Visitation will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., Monday, at the First United Methodist Church. Lynn was born May 13, 1932 in Dayton, to parents; Harold and Odell Mosley Stephens, and resided in the Dayton area throughout most of her life. She and her husband Hal owned and operated Dayton Auto Parts; she was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Dayton, and enjoyed sailing with her husband and spending time with her family. Mrs. Wirick was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 53 years: Harold S. Wirick, Jr., grandchildren: Bailey and Samuel Wirick, and daughter-in-law: Debbie Wirick. She is survived by her sons: Sam Wirick and wife Marcie of Dayton and Gary Wirick and wife Lillian of Dayton, grandson: Douglas Wirick of Dayton, brothers: Steve Stephens and wife Sandra of Dayton, Lloyd Stephens and wife Billie of Dayton, and Vernon Stephens, Sr. of Dayton, brother-in-law: Jim Wirick and wife Betty of Indiana, and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Copeland

Selman “Earl” Copeland, 83, of Liberty, Texas, died Thursday, December 20, 2007. He was born on March 3, 1924 to Elmer B. and Ellie Mae (Bailey) Copeland in Marquez, Texas. Earl was handyman. He loved to work with his hands. He liked to do woodwork and tend to his garden. He worked for the Texas Highway Department for 32 years. He was a member of the Liberty VFW. He also liked to hunt and fish.

Earl was preceded in death by his parents; loving wife Felma (Carlton) Copeland; brother, Robert Moses Copeland; and sister, Ruby Lee Dennison. He is survived by his two sons, Ron Copeland and wife Karen of Pasadena and Jerry Copeland and wife Carol of Hardin; grandchildren, Laura Mills, Steven Copeland, and Melissa Shirley; great-grandchildren, William Kyle Shirley, Nathan Mills, and Mattie Melissa Shirley; and numerous more nieces, nephews and friends.

A visitation for family and friends will be Saturday, December 22, from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. at Allison Funeral Service. A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, December 23 with internment to follow in Liberty Catholic cemetery.

Gee

A Mass of Christian Burial for Carolyn St. Julian Gee, 47, of Liberty, Texas, will be held Saturday, December 22, 2007 at 12:00 Noon. at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, Ames, Texas, with the Reverend Father Ikeokwu Nduh, M.S.P. as Celebrant, with burial in Ames Catholic cemetery under the direction of Wells Funeral Service, Liberty, Texas.

A native of Houston, Texas she was an accountant. A member of Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, she died Thursday, December 20, 2007, in Houston after an illness.

Visitation will be held Saturday from 10:00 A.M. until time of service. She is survived by her husband, Steven Gee of Liberty, her mother Ivory D. St. Julian of Houston, one daughter, Joscelyn G. Garrett of San Marcos, Texas, two sons, Joshua Garrett and Steven Gee II, of Liberty, Texas; four sisters: Judy Horton and Alice St. Julian of Humble, Texas, Gwendolyn Zenon of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Frances Baldwin of Houston, Texas; four brothers: Michael St. Julian of Houston, Kenneth St. Julian of Humble, Alan St. Julian of Dayton, Elliot St. Julian of Richmond, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Shipman

Our beloved Angela Marie Johnson Shipman went to be with her Savior on December 13, 2007 at San Jacinto Methodist in Baytown.

A memorial will be held Saturday, December 15, 2007 at 10 a.m. at the Old River Baptist Church, Hwy 1409, Dayton, TX. Services by Danny Biddy & Ronnie Webb.

Angie was a former lifetime resident of Dayton, Texas, and recently moved to Highlands, Texas. She was a homemaker and a loving wife and mother. She enjoyed taking care of the children in the church nursery where she was also a member.

Angie was preceded in death by her father, Charles Johnson. She is survived by her mother, Maria Rivera; sister, Cynthia Aschenbach; brother, Rafael Rodriguez; nephew, Daniel Larry Floch; and niece, Stacie Lee Garza.

Her loving husband, Brandon; son, Brent; and daughter, Breanna. Numerous family members and friends. Special regards to her Guardian Angel, Shanna Hodges.

Haberle

Martha Bailey Haberle, age 92, of Liberty, TX, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007 in a Houston Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, December 21, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, 539 Main Street, Liberty, TX, at 1:00 P.M., with Dr. Jerry F. House and Rev. Ron Page officiating, with burial following in the Fairlawn cemetery, Liberty, TX. A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 20, 2007 at the Allison Funeral Service 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, TX., from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.

Martha was born on June 15, 1915 in Tulia, Swisher County, TX, to Frank Morris Bailey and Mattie Effie Grimes Bailey. She graduated from the Claude High School in 1932 and later married Thomas Julius Haberle. They made Liberty their home, joining the First United Methodist Church where she was a member of the United Methodist Women, and taught Sunday school of many years. She was a charter member of the Coterie Club and a member of the Liberty Garden Club. She never passed up a good ‘bridge’ game and was a big sports fan, the Astros, Texans, and UT Longhorns, an avid reader, and piano player.

Martha is preceded in death by her parents and husband, and five brothers.

The survivors are a son: Thomas J. Haberle, Jr, and wife Suzanne, of Liberty, two daughters: Patti Norwood and husband Ed, of Liberty, TX, and Julie Moss and husband David, of Kingwood, TX, and a step daughter: Dorothy Bullard of Duncanville, TX, 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and a host of other family members and friends.

Bingham

Barbara Ann Bingham, age 69, of Dayton, TX, died in a Houston Hospital, on Friday, December 14, 2007.

Services will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at the Sterling Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, Dayton, TX 77535, at 10:00 A.M. with the Rev. Mike Blackburn officiating. Burial will be in the Palms Memorial cemetery, Dayton, TX. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 17, 2007, from 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at the Sterling Funeral Home. Barbara Ann was a native of Breckenridge, TX. She was born on August 25, 1938 to Victor Jones and Georgia Mae Amason Jones. Barbara Ann married James Monroe Bingham on June 2, 1956 in Lovington, NM, They made their home in Spring, TX, before moving to Dayton 21 years ago. Barbara Ann and James owned and operated the Bingham Feed and Seed Store. She enjoyed cooking and seeing after her family.

Barbara Ann is preceded in death by her parents, a sister: Christine Malaski, and a brother: Vic Jones.

Survivors are her husband of 52 years, James Monroe Bingham of Dayton, TX, a son: Jimmy Ray Bingham and wife Lisa of Kingwood, TX, two daughters: Cindy Walker and husband Kenny, of Houston, and Becky Bingham of Dayton, TX, a brother: Andy Jones and wife Betty of Wichita Falls, TX, four sisters: Betty Petty of Fairfield, TX., Shirley Jones, Peggy Turner and husband James, and Rhonda Elliott and husband Bob all of Seymore, TX, two grandchildren: Greg Green and wife Leslie of Sacramento, CA, and Kelsi Bingham, three great grandchildren: Brook, Cooper, and Palmer Green, of Sacramento, CA, and a host of nieces and nephews and other family members.

Tanner

Evelyn Penny Tanner, 88, of Hardin, died Tuesday, December 18, 2007, at her grandson’s residence in Sour Lake, Texas.

Funeral services will be Friday, December 21, 2007, 10:00am at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty, Texas, with Reverend Bill Fabriguze and Reverend Tony Hines officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00pm until 8:00pm, December 20, 2007, at Allison Funeral Service. Burial will follow in the Moss Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Tanner was born December 29, 1918, in Beaumont, Texas. She was a lifetime resident of the Tanner Settlement in Hardin and a member of Hardin Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Penny, her husband of 59 years, Harold Tanner, and her son, Sidney Harold Tanner. She is survived by her daughter, Nobie Jo LeBert and husband Bobby of Brookeland, son Brian Kent Tanner and wife Aileen, of Sour Lake, daughter-in-law Jeanette Tanner of League City, one sister Lenora Caffey of Beaumont, eight grandchildren, Debbie Watson and husband Johnny, Clifford Tanner and wife Michelle, Tiffany Biggars and husband Justin, Ashley Smith and husband Gregg, four great-grandchildren, Kari Leon, Bryce Smith, Whitney and Truett Tanner.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the memory of Evelyn Tanner to the Hardin Baptist Church.

We wish to extend a special thanks to Odyssey Hospice and her other caregivers.

Cantrell

Roy Dennis Cantrell, 69, of Dayton, died Saturday, December 15, 2007 in Liberty after an extended illness.

He was born July 24, 1938 in Corpus Christi, Texas to parents, John S. and Gertrude L. Johnson Cantrell. He played baseball prior to his service in the United States Army at the end of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Cantrell had lived in the Dayton area since 1985 and was previously of Houston. Before retiring he worked as a heavy equipment operator for the East End Courier. He enjoyed telling stories and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a gardener, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and shooting.

Services for Mr. Cantrell will be 11:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2007 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jeff Day officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery. Visitation for Mr. Cantrell will be 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers: David Cantrell, Johnny Cantrell, and Dickie Cantrell; and his sister: Marie Brooks. He is survived by his wife of 47 years: Pat Payne Cantrell of Dayton; his son: Troy Cantrell and wife Stacy of Dayton; and his daughter: Brenda L. Marsh and husband Bubba of Conroe; his sister: Opal L. Weeks of Cleveland; Grandchildren: Joshua L. Marsh, Lisa L. Smart, Vickie A. Marsh, Jordan B. Cantrell, Katelynn N. Cantrell, and Kayla E. Cantrell; Great-Grandchildren: Hayden C. Marsh, Briana N. Marsh, and Dylan A. Smart. Also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Fondon

Henry Woodroe Fondon Sr., age 87, of Liberty, TX, died Sunday, December 16, 2007 in a Baytown Hospital.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, December 18, 2007 at 11:00 A. M., at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel, 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, TX., with the Reverend Dick Lintleman officiating. Burial will follow in the Worthy cemetery. A visitation will be held on Monday, December 17, 2007 at the Allison Funeral Service from 6:00 P. M. until 8:00 P.M.

Henry was born on March 10, 1920 in Midfield, TX., to Jessie James and Ida Lewis Fondon. He married Maudie Simpson and they attended the Middleton United Methodist Church in Wallisville, TX. Henry was a carpenter for the Texas Gulf Sulphur Company for 30 years before retiring. He enjoyed fishing, square dancing, and cooking on the grill.

Henry is preceded in death by his parents, wife, a sister: Lily Neuman, 2 brothers: James and Claude Fondon, a daughter: Nancy Worthy, a step son: Neal Blanchard, a granddaughter: Heather McConnell, and grandson: Michael Miller.

He is survived by daughters: Faye McConnell of Liberty, and Louise Miller of Liberty, sons: John Wayne Fondon and wife Debbie, and Henry W.
