Martin

William Carlos “W.C.” Martin, 65, of Dayton, died Wednesday, November 29, 2007, at his residence.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, December 1, 2007, at the Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel with burial following at a later date in Selma, AL. Services are under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.

W.C. was born October 21, 1942 in Lamison, AL, to parents; Carl R. Martin and Irene Dyson, and has resided in the Dayton area for the past 25 years. He was a former millwright, and a retired carpenter, veteran of the US Army, and enjoyed woodworking and collecting knives.

Mr. Martin was preceded in death by his father: Carl R. Martin, mother: Irene Dyson Mosley, and brother: Richard G. Martin. He is survived by his daughter: Michelle Folse and husband Dwayne of Des Allemands, LA, son: Brian Martin, five grandchildren: Dakota, Cierra, and Kanyon Folse, and Austin and Tyler Martin, and numerous other relatives, and friends.

Nugent

Columbus Dennison Nugent, age 92, of Liberty, TX, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

Funeral service for Dennison will be held on Friday, November 30, 2007, at 10:00 A.M., at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel 1101 North Travis Street, Liberty, TX, with the Rev. Lamar Shane officiating with burial in the Monroe Fregia cemetery, Liberty, TX. A visitation will be held on Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Allison Funeral Service from 5:00 P. M., until 8:00 P. M.

Dennison was born on July 28, 1915, in Liberty, TX, to Octave Nugent and Fannie Nugent. He attended the United Pentecostal Church and worked for the Hardin ISD as a building custodian. He was a master gardener and took pride in the vegetables he grew and shared with family and friends.

Dennison is preceded in death by his parents, a wife: Kate Nugent, a son: Dennison James Nugent, three brothers: Hanson, Francis, and Cecil Nugent, and a sister: Margarine Nugent. The survivors are the children: Darvin Nugent and wife, Shirley, Jack Nugent and wife, Carol, and Howard Nugent and wife, Ruth, and a daughter Helen Roach and husband Robert H. ‘Robbie’ Roach, 19 grand children and 28 great grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

Clark

Mary Emmaline Clark, 91, of Kountze, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007 after an extended illness. She was born February 4, 1916 in Joplin, Missouri to parents: Otto Jefferson and Ida Mae Richardson McCollum.

She had lived most of her life in Liberty where she was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God Church. She was most proud that her children, her grandchildren and son-in-law had given to their country a combined 116 years of service to the United States Military.

Services for Mrs. Clark will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 29, 2007 at the Bethel Assembly of God Church under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Wednesday evening at the Bethel Assembly of God Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband: Leonard Earl Clark, sons: Frank LeRoy Clark and Lawrence Edward Clark; and sister: Gertrude Elaine Norris. She is survived by her daughter: Janet E. Mangham of Sour Lake; her sons: Ronald Earl Clark and wife Joyce of Kountze and Richard Carl Clark and wife Iwanda of Aztec, New Mexico; fourteen grandchildren; forty-two great-grandchildren; eight great great-grandchildren; also numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Day

Travis L. Day, age 77, of Cleveland, Texas, died Thursday, November 29, 2007 at Cleveland Regional Medical Center. He was born in Evadale, Texas, on September 25, 1930 to Homer and Alma Day who preceded him in death along with his precious loving wife, Virginia Day who he adored and his son, Travis Dwain Day. Survivors include his daughters, Doris Jones and husband, Burley, Debbie Cunningham and husband, Monte; grandchildren, Natashia Jones, Brooke Day, Brandi Robertson, Crystal Porter, Tracy Day; great-grandchildren, Courtney, Sarah, Shayne, Chance, Dustin, Jayde, Seth, Riley, Cooper, Jacob, Lillian, Grace, William; brothers and sisters, Willie E. “Bud” Day, Homer Day, Jr., Faye Lawrence, Tommy Kelly, and Pearl Smith and many other loving family members and cherished friends.

The family wishes you to join them in visitation 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., Friday, November 30, 2007 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home, Cleveland, Texas. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 1, 2007, 1:00 p.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel, Cleveland, Texas. Interment will follow at Pace-Stancil Memorial Rest Gardens where Travis will make his final resting place beside his wife.

Trainer

Peggy Sue Trainer, age 45, of Cleveland, Texas, died Wednesday, November 21, 2007. She was born in Cleveland, Texas, on October 10, 1962.

She is preceded in death by her twin daughters, Samantha and Savanah; brothers, Donald Winters and Glenn Winters; and her mother, Tommie Winters.

She leaves behind her father, Bill Winters; sons, B.J. Williamson, Tristan Williamson; sister, Tana Puckett and husband, Ronnie, brother, Sandy Winters; sister-in-law, Donna Winters; niece, Lisa Dennard; nephew, Jaybo Turner; and many other loving family members and caring friends.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, December 1, 2007, 10:00 a.m. at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel, Cleveland, Texas.

Clark

Childress

John Van Childress, Sr. 79, of Cleveland, Texas, died November 16, 2007. He was born in Conroe, Texas, to John V. Childress and Ida S. Dean on June 20, 1928. He is preceded in death by his son, John Van Childress, III; grandsons, John Van Childress, IV and Jon Wayne Childress.

He is survived by his loving wife, Edna Marie Childress; son, Gary Childress and wife, Gigi, Kenneth Childress and wife, Lisa; daughter, Guin Ainsworth; sister, Idell Madeley; brother, Jesse Childress; grandchildren, Kenneth Childress, Marie Davis, John Robert Childress, Justin Childress, B.J. Ainsworth, Michael Ainsworth, Jeffery Ainsworth, Danielle Ainsworth, Daniel Ainsworth, numerous great-grandchildren and many other cherished family members and caring friends.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held December 1, 2007, 2:00 p.m. at Copeland cemetery, Conroe, Texas.

Dinsmore

Billy Joe Dinsmore, 13, of Dayton, died Saturday, November 24, 2007.

He was born December 14, 1993 in Baytown, Texas, to parents, Delbert A. and Robin Raley Dinsmore and had been a lifetime resident of Dayton. He attended Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School where he was a seventh grade student, played football and played the tuba in the Pony Band. Billy Joe attended the First Baptist Church, was a member of the Liberty County Sheriff's Posse, enjoyed hunting, fishing, dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. He was interested in magic, drawing, music and guitars.

Services for Billy Joe will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, November 29, 2007 at the First Baptist Church, Dayton, with Rev. Randy Piatt officiating. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park cemetery under the direction of Pace-Stancil Funeral Home. The family will receive friends 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.

Billy Joe was preceded in death by his father: Delbert A. Dinsmore and is survived by his mother: Robin Raley Dinsmore and DuWayne Odermann of Dayton; brothers: Aron Dinsmore of Dayton and Daniel Dinsmore of Dayton; sister: Leann Dinsmore of Dayton; grandparents: Karen and Jerry Raley of Dayton; aunt: Laura Raley of Houston; extended family: Jeff Odermann, Jana Odermann, Tim Odermann, and Ted Odermann; also numerous other family members and friends.

Smith

Homer C. Smith, 82, died in Liberty, Texas, at his home. He had been ill for an extended period.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 27, 2007, from 5pm until 8pm at Allison Funeral Service in Liberty, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at the First United Methodist Church, Liberty, Texas, at 11:00am. Dr. Faulk Landrum, Dr. Jerry House and Reverend Ron Page will officiate. Pallbearers will be Dick Busby, Robert Gilmore, John Hebert, Joe Leonard, Gerald Simpson, Mike Little and J.C. Burnham. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Men’s Bible Class, VFW, Liberty Elks Lodge #2019 and the Liberty Masonic Lodge. Burial will follow in Cooke cemetery.

He was born in Florence, Alabama to his parents, Homer and Ora Hutto Smith, who preceded him in death. He also had one brother Jim who is also deceased.

Homer graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baytown, Texas, in 1944. He and all the boys in his class traveled to Houston to enlist in some branch of the military service. He joined the U.S. Navy, serving in the South Pacific, receiving the unit citation for action at Iwo Jima. After his discharge from the Navy he served as post commander of the American Legion at TCU in Ft. Worth. He was also a lifetime member of the VFW.

He received a Bachelor’s Degree from TCU in 1950 and Master’s Degree from Sul Ross in 1954, continuing his education toward a Doctoral Degree from University of Houston. While at TCU he was elected to be a cheerleader.

He was a Methodist for 57 years, serving in all Lay positions. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for 55 years, and was a charter member of the Liberty Elks Lodge, past member of Liberty Lions Club, Rotary Club, and the Valley Players where he participated in three productions. He was Past President of Liberty Retired Teachers Association, conducted a workshop on TV for Texas teachers for Texas Education Agency, and belonged to several educational organizations.

Homer was a coach, teacher, and principal in Texas for thirty years, and served as Associate Director of Admissions at Texas A&M.

Following retirement Homer became manager of the Liberty-Dayton Chamber of Commerce in 1977. During that tenure he originated the first bosses and secretaries’ luncheon, initiated the teacher’s reception each August, and held the first joint banquet for the Liberty and Dayton area Chamber of Commerce. He established the annual “Parade with Santa” in both Liberty and Dayton. He also worked with the road committees to widen FM 1409, FM 1960, while work was begun on the railroad underpass in Dayton, and set in motion the project of beautification between Liberty and Dayton including lining the median with Oleanders. Several new industries were established in this area at that time.

He later became Grand Jury Bailiff for Liberty County, and served for a time as Region IV co-coordinator of adult education.

Homer wrote a column for the Liberty Vindicator for several years resulting in his book “Informally Speaking”. His writings continue to be read in the “Liberty County Outlook” magazine. He won first place for humorous columns at the 1995 Gulf Coast Press Association meeting in Galveston.

He also wrote for “Stars and Stripes” military newspaper, and the educator’s “Texas Outlook” magazine. He received the Citizen of the Year award in Dayton in 1975.

Homer is survived by his wife Doris of 57 years, four children; Candace and Brad Hull of Longview; Loren and Jane Smith of Houston; Sherri and Ronnie Holder of Bryan; and Ed and Dr. Marsha Blount of Nacogdoches. He also leaves eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to Odyssey Hospice.

Snell

Robert “Bob” S. Snell, 58, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Saturday, November 24, 2007 in Dayton, Texas, after a long battle with lung cancer.

Robert was born May 21, 1949 in Forrest City, Arkansas to Johnnie C. Snell and Betty Joe Snell. Robert’s parents and younger brother moved to Chicago in 1952 where he lived until 1971 when he moved to Texas with his family. He had lived in Dayton, for the past 8 years. Robert served in the Marine Corps from 1967 to 1970. He served two tours in Viet Nam. He was a proud Veteran and most recently was a member of the VFW Post #5621 in Liberty, Texas, where he was an Honor Guard member. Robert was an avid history and nature lover. He loved to fish, travel and visit historical sites. He will be missed by his family and friends.

Graveside services for Robert will be 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, November 28, 2007 at Houston National cemetery, 10410 Veteran’s Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas. Visitation will be 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday evening at Pace Stancil Funeral Home, Dayton, Texas.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents and he is survived by his wife of 13 years, Katharine Snell of Dayton (originally from the Chicago area), brothers: Walter Snell and wife Linda of Meadow Place, Texas, and Gordon Snell of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by his children of a previous marriage, son: Robert S. Snell, II and wife Michelle of Beecher, Illinois; daughters: Lisa E. Reichel and husband Bill of Grant Park, Illinois, and Heidi Lynn Nell of Lansing, Illinois; seven grandchildren and five stepson’s from Katharine’s previous marriage.

Fitzgerald

Jewel Caroline Spillers Fitzgerald, 85, of Anahuac, Texas, died Friday, November 23, 2007.

She was born on March 22, 1922 to James Jackson and Minnie Iola (Elmer) Spillers in Pelly, Texas. Jewel was a member of First Baptist Church of Anahuac. She was a “Prayer Warrior”. She loved to cook, meet new friends, and help anyone that was in need. Jewel was a member of “WMU” and the Women’s Civic Group.

Jewel is preceded in death by her parents; loving husband of thirty-two years, Carl J. Fitzgerald; and a brother, James Spillers. She is survived by her daughters, Carlene Egloff of Double Bayou and Debbie Nelson and husband Don of Ingram; sons, Jimmy Fitzgerald of Double Bayou and Steve Fitzgerald and wife Patti of Winnie; grandchildren, Sonja Virden and husband Mike of San Angelo, Travis and Kristen Nelson of Ingram, Kyle Egloff of Double Bayou, Katie Fitzgerald of College Station, and Tyler Fitzgerald and wife Nikki of Double Bayou; great-grandchildren, Caitlin and Hailey Virden of San Angelo; sister, Marty Ball and husband Curt of Baytown; niece and nephew, Lori and Joel; and numerous friends and neighbors.

A visitation for family and friends will be from 5:00 until 8:00 PM Sunday, November 25 at Sterling Funeral Home in Anahuac. A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, November 26 at First Baptist Church of Anahuac.

Trahan

A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph Jerry Trahan, 52, of Liberty, Texas, will be held Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, Ames, Texas, with the Reverend Father Ikeokwu Nduh, M.S.P. as Celebrant, with burial in Ames Catholic cemetery.

A native of Liberty, he was a graduate of Liberty High School Class of 1975 and a domestic work. He died Monday, November 19, 2007 at his residence in Ames, Texas, after an illness.

Visitation will be held 8 A.M. until time of service at the church.

He is survived by his mother: Josephine Trahan of Ames; three brothers: Roy Trahan of Raywood, Charles Ray Trahan of Hitchcock and Gabriel Trahan of Las Vegas, Nevada; four sisters: Mary Lois Allison of Mamou, Louisiana, Angelina Brown, Nacogdoches, Texas, Delialah David of Ames, Texas; Frances Ann Deblanc of Houston, Texas, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Clark

Mary Mazie Clark, age 84, of Liberty, TX, died Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at her home in Liberty.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 24 at 10 A.M., in the Fairlawn cemetery, Liberty, Texas, with Mr. Doug Williams officiating.

A visitation will be held on Friday, November 23, 2007 at the Allison Funeral Service Chapel from 5 pm until 8 pm.

Helen was born on February 19, 1923 in Daisetta, TX, to Thomas Oran Beasley and Mamie Louise Reinhardt Beasley. She graduated from the Hull-Daisetta High School, and made Liberty her home. She was a member of the Baptist church and she enjoyed collecting things.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and both husbands: David Schaffer II, and Jesse C. Clark. Survivors are her children: David Dennis Scheffer III, of Baytown, TX, Mary Helen Jones and husband Larry, of Baytown, TX, Gene Paul Scheffer and his wife, Christina of Mount Belvieu, TX, and Randy Lee Scheffer and his wife, Paula, and ten grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.

Johnson

Funeral Service for Rose Mary Johnson, 58, of Liberty, Texas, will be held Saturday, November 24, 2007 at 11:00 A.M. in Wells Memorial Chapel, Liberty, with burial in Wells Memorial cemetery.

A native of Lakeland, Louisiana, she died November 16, 2007 at her residence after an illness.

Visitation will be held Saturday in the chapel from 9:00 A.M. until time of service.

She is survived by one daughter: Alvenia Chambers of Dayton, Texas; one sister: Elva Robertson of Ames, Texas, and a host of other relatives and friends.
